The flow around a spinning sphere moving in a rarefied gas is considered in the following situation: (i) the translational velocity of the sphere is small (i.e. the Mach number is small); (ii) the Knudsen number, the ratio of the molecular mean free path to the sphere radius, is of the order of unity (the case with small Knudsen numbers is also discussed); and (iii) the ratio between the equatorial surface velocity and the translational velocity of the sphere is of the order of unity. The behaviour of the gas, particularly the transverse force acting on the sphere, is investigated through an asymptotic analysis of the Boltzmann equation for small Mach numbers. It is shown that the transverse force is expressed as $\boldsymbol{F}_L = {\rm \pi}\rho a^3 (\boldsymbol{\varOmega} \times \boldsymbol{v}) \bar{h}_L$, where $\rho$ is the density of the surrounding gas, a is the radius of the sphere, $\boldsymbol {\varOmega }$ is its angular velocity, $\boldsymbol {v}$ is its velocity and $\bar {h}_L$ is a numerical factor that depends on the Knudsen number. Then, $\bar {h}_L$ is obtained numerically based on the Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook model of the Boltzmann equation for a wide range of Knudsen number. It is shown that $\bar {h}_L$ varies with the Knudsen number monotonically from 1 (the continuum limit) to $-\tfrac {2}{3}$ (the free molecular limit), vanishing at an intermediate Knudsen number. The present analysis is intended to clarify the transition of the transverse force, which is previously known to have different signs in the continuum and the free molecular limits.

Aiming to study the rough-wall turbulent boundary layer structure over differently arranged roughness elements, an experimental study was conducted on flows with regular and random roughness. Varying planform densities of truncated cone roughness elements in a square staggered pattern were investigated. The same planform densities were also investigated in random arrangements. Velocity statistics were measured via two-component laser Doppler velocimetry and stereoscopic particle image velocimetry. Friction velocity, thickness, roughness length and zero-plane displacement, determined from spatially averaged flow statistics, showed only minor differences between the regular and random arrangements at the same density. Recent a priori morphometric and statistical drag prediction methods were evaluated against experimentally determined roughness length. Observed differences between regular and random surface flow parameters were due to the presence of secondary flows which manifest as high-momentum pathways and low-momentum pathways in the streamwise velocity. Contrary to expectation, these secondary flows were present over the random surfaces and not discernible over the regular surfaces. Previously identified streamwise-coherent spanwise roughness heterogeneity does not seem to be present, suggesting that such roughness heterogeneity is not necessary to sustain secondary flows. Evidence suggests that the observed secondary flows were initiated at the front edge of the roughness and sustained over irregular roughness. Due to the secondary flows, local turbulent boundary layer profiles do not scale with local wall shear stress but appear to scale with local turbulent shear stress above the roughness canopy. Additionally, quadrant analysis shows distinct changes in the populations of ejection and sweep events.

This study topologically describes near-wall flows around a surface-mounted cylinder at a high Reynolds number ($Re$) of $5\times 10^4$ and in a very thick boundary layer, which were partially measured or technically approximated from the literature. For complete and rational flow construction, we use high-resolution simulations and critical-point theory. The large-scale near-wake vortex is composed of two connected segments rolled up from the sides of the cylinder and from the free end. Another large-scale side vortex clearly roots on two notable foci on the lower side wall. In the junction region, the side vortex moves upwards with a curved trajectory, which induces the formation of nodes on the ground surface. In the free-end region, the side vortex is compressed, which results in a smaller trailing-edge vortex and its downstream movement. Only tip vortices are observed in the far wake. The origin of the tip vortices and their distinction from the near-wake vortex are discussed. Further analyses suggest that $Re$ independence should be treated with high caution when $Re$ increases from 500 to ${O}(10^4)$. The occurrence of upwash flow behind the cylinder strongly depends on the increase in $Re$, the mechanism of which is also provided. The separation–reattachment process in the junction region and the trailing-edge vortices are discovered only at a high $Re$. The former should significantly affect the strength of the side vortex in the junction region and the latter should cause a sharp drop in pressure near the trailing edge.

The hydrodynamic interactions (HIs) of two colloidal spheres characterized by the translation–translation (T–T) couplings have been studied under various confinements, but little is known regarding the HIs of anisotropic particles and rotational motions, which are common in nature and industry. Here, we study the T–T, rotation–rotation (R–R) and translation–rotation (T–R) hydrodynamic couplings of two colloidal ellipsoids sediment on the bottoms of channels in experiment, theory and simulation. We find that the degree of confinement and the particle shape anisotropy are critical tuning factors resulting in anomalous hydrodynamic and diffusive behaviours. The negative R–R coupling reflects the tendency of opposite rotations of two neighbouring ellipsoids. The positive T–R coupling reflects that an ellipsoid rotates away from the channel axis as another ellipsoid approaches. As the channel width increases, the positive T–T coupling changes to an abnormal negative coupling, indicating that the single-file diffusion can exist even in wide channels. By contrast, only positive T–T couplings were observed for spheres in channels. The T–T coupling increases with the aspect ratio p. The R–R coupling is the maximum at a moderate p ~ 2.8. The T–R coupling is the maximum at a moderate degree of confinement. The spatial range of HIs is longer than that of spheres and increases with p. We propose a simple model which reproduces some coupling phenomena between two ellipsoids, and it is further confirmed by low-Reynolds-number hydrodynamic simulation. These findings shed new light on anisotropic particle diffusion in porous media, transport through membranes, microfluidics and microrheology.

The capture of neutrally buoyant, sub-Kolmogorov particles at the interface of deformable drops in turbulent flow and the subsequent evolution of particle surface distribution are investigated. Direct numerical simulation of turbulence, phase-field modelling of the drop interface dynamics and Lagrangian particle tracking are used. Particle distribution is obtained considering excluded-volume interactions, i.e. by enforcing particle collisions. Particles are initially dispersed in the carrier flow and are driven in time towards the surface of the drops by jet-like turbulent fluid motions. Once captured by the interfacial forces, particles disperse on the surface. Excluded-volume interactions bring particles into long-term trapping regions where the average surface velocity divergence sampled by the particles is zero. These regions correlate well with portions of the interface characterized by higher-than-mean curvature, indicating that modifications of the surface tension induced by the presence of very small particles will be stronger in the highly convex regions of the interface.

This study presents the findings of a wind tunnel experiment investigating the behaviour of micrometric inertial particles with Stokes numbers around unity in the turbulent wake of a stationary porous disk. Various concentrations $\varPhi _{v}\in ([6-19] \times 10^{-6})$ of poly-disperse water droplets (average diameter 40–50 $\mathrm {\mu }$m) are compared with sub-inertial tracer particles. Hot-wire anemometry, phase Doppler interferometry and particle image velocimetry were implemented in the near- and far-wake regions to study the complex dynamics of such particles. Quadrant analysis is used to explore the shear effects of the particle wake interaction. Turbulence statistics and particle size distributions reveal distinct differences in the structure of the wake when inertial particles are present in the flow. Additionally, there are different structures in the near and far wake regions and structures change with particle volume fraction.

The properties and structure of electrically stressed ionic liquid menisci experiencing ion evaporation are simulated using an electrohydrodynamic model with field-enhanced thermionic emission in steady state for an axially symmetric geometry. Solutions are explored as a function of the external background field, meniscus dimension, hydraulic impedance and liquid temperature. Statically stable solutions for emitting menisci are found to be constrained to a set of conditions: a minimum hydraulic impedance, a maximum current output and a narrow range of background fields that maximizes at menisci sizes of 0.5–3 ${\rm \mu}{\rm m}$ in radius. Static stability is lost when the electric field adjacent to the electrode that holds the meniscus corresponds to an electric pressure that exceeds twice the surface tension stress of a sphere of the same size as the meniscus. Preliminary investigations suggest this limit to be universal, therefore, independent of most ionic liquid properties, reservoir pressure, hydraulic impedance or temperature and could explain the experimentally observed bifurcation of a steady ion source into two or more emission sites. Ohmic heating near the emission region increases the liquid temperature, which is found to be important to accurately describe stability boundaries. Temperature increase does not affect the current output when the hydraulic impedance is constant. This phenomenon is thought to be due to an improved interface charge relaxation enhanced by the higher electrical conductivity. Dissipated ohmic energy is mostly conducted to the electrode wall. The higher thermal diffusivity of the wall versus the liquid, allows the ion source to run in steady state without heating.

In the flow past elongated rectangular cylinders at moderate Reynolds numbers, vortices shedding from the leading- and trailing-edge corners are frequency locked by the impinging leading-edge vortex instability. The present work investigates how the chord-based Strouhal number varies with the aspect ratio of the cylinder at a Reynolds number (based on the cylinder thickness and the free-stream velocity) of $Re=400$, i.e. when locking is strong. Several two-dimensional, nonlinear simulations are run for rectangular and D-shaped cylinders, with the aspect ratio ranging from $1$ to $11$, and a global linear stability analysis of the flow is performed. The shedding frequency observed in the nonlinear simulations is predicted fairly well by the eigenfrequency of the leading eigenmode. The inspection of the structural sensitivity confirms the central role of the trailing-edge vortex shedding in the frequency locking, as already assumed by other authors. Surprisingly, however, the stepwise increase of the Strouhal number with the aspect ratio reported by several previous works is not fully reproduced. Indeed, with increasing aspect ratio, two distinct flow behaviours are observed, associated with two flow configurations where the interaction between the leading- and trailing-edge vortices is different. These two configurations are fully characterised, and the mechanism of selection of the flow configuration is discussed. Lastly, for aspect ratios close to the jump between two consecutive shedding modes, the Strouhal number is found to present hysteresis, implying the existence of multiple stable configurations. Continuing the lower shedding-mode branch by increasing the aspect ratio, we found that the periodic configuration loses stability via a Neimark–Sacker bifurcation leading to different Arnold tongues. This hysteresis can explain, at least partially, the significant scatter of existing experimental and numerical data.

New light is shed on morphological features of water–propylene glycol sessile droplets evaporating into ambient air at not too high relative humidity. Such droplets adopt a Marangoni-contracted shape even on perfectly wetting substrates, an effect well known since Cira et al. (Nature, 519, 2015). We here highlight a strong separation of scales normally occurring for such droplets. Namely, there is a narrow high-curvature zone localized at the foot of the droplet, where the apparent contact angle is formed, while the core of the droplet merely adheres to the classical (capillary–gravity) static shape. Experimentally, we rely upon interferometry to discern such fine key details. We detect a maximum of the droplet slope profile in the foot region, which amounts to the apparent contact angle. Theoretically, a local description of the foot region is devised. We indicate a crucial role of convective mixing by the solutal Marangoni flow, here accounted for by the Taylor dispersion, which proves to underlie the separation of scales and ensure self-consistency of the local model. Migration of such droplets in a humidity gradient is also approached within the same experimental and theoretical framework. It is considered that the resulting back–front asymmetry of the apparent contact angles drives the motion similarly to a wettability gradient, although the drag (‘Cox–Voinov’) factor is here found to be different. The predictions, comparing well with the measurements (our own and from the literature), are based on rigorous models, isothermal and as reduced as possible, without any fitting parameters or microphysics effects.

We present an experimental study of gravity currents in a cylindrical geometry, in the presence of vegetation. Forty tests were performed with a brine advancing in a fresh water ambient fluid, in lock release, and with a constant and time-varying flow rate. The tank is a circular sector of angle $30^\circ$ with radius equal to 180 cm. Two different densities of the vegetation were simulated by vertical plastic rods with diameter $D=1.6\ \textrm{cm}$. We marked the height of the current as a function of radius and time and the position of the front as a function of time. The results indicate a self-similar structure, with lateral profiles that after an initial adjustment collapse to a single curve in scaled variables. The propagation of the front is well described by a power law function of time. The existence of self-similarity on an experimental basis corroborates a simple theoretical model with the following assumptions: (i) the dominant balance is between buoyancy and drag, parameterized by a power law of the current velocity $\sim |u|^{\lambda-1}u$; (ii) the current advances in shallow-water conditions; and (iii) ambient-fluid dynamics is negligible. In order to evaluate the value of ${\lambda}$ (the only tuning parameter of the theoretical model), we performed two additional series of measurements. We found that $\lambda$ increased from 1 to 2 while the Reynolds number increased from 100 to approximately $6\times10^3$, and the drag coefficient and the transition from $\lambda=1$ to $\lambda=2$ are quantitatively affected by D, but the structure of the model is not.

Recent findings on wall-bounded turbulence have prompted a new impetus for modelling development to capture and resolve the Reynolds-number-dependent influence of outer flow on near-wall turbulence in terms of the ‘foot-printing’ of the large-scale coherent structures and the scale-interaction associated ‘modulation’. We develop a two-scale method to couple a locally embedded near-wall fine-mesh direct numerical simulation (DNS) block with a global coarser mesh domain. The influence of the large-scale structures on the local fine-mesh block is captured by a scale-dependent coarse–fine domain interface treatment. The coarse-mesh resolved disturbances are directly exchanged across the interface, while only the fine-mesh resolved fluctuations around the coarse-mesh resolved variables are subject to periodic conditions in the streamwise and spanwise directions. The global near-wall coarse-mesh region outside the local fine-mesh block is governed by the augmented flow governing equations with forcing source terms generated by upscaling the space–time-averaged fine-mesh solution. The validity and effectiveness of the method are examined for canonical incompressible channel flows at several Reynolds numbers. The mean statistics and energy spectra are in good agreement with the corresponding full DNS data. The results clearly illustrate the ‘foot-printing’ and ‘modulation’ in the local fine-mesh block. Noteworthy also is that neither spectral-gap nor scale-separation is assumed, and a smooth overlap between the global-domain and the local-domain energy spectra is observed. It is shown that the mesh-count scaling with Reynolds number is potentially reduced from $O(R{e^2})$ for the conventional fully wall-resolved large-eddy simulation (LES) to $O(Re)$ for the present locally embedded two-scale LES.

Linear interaction analysis (LIA) is routinely used to study the shock–turbulence interaction in supersonic and hypersonic flows. It is based on the inviscid interaction of elementary Kovásznay modes with a shock discontinuity. LIA neglects nonlinear effects, and hence it is limited to small-amplitude disturbances. In this work, we extend the LIA framework to study the fundamental interaction of a two-dimensional vorticity wave with a normal shock. The predictions from a weakly nonlinear framework are compared with high-order accurate numerical simulations over a range of wave amplitudes ($\epsilon$), incidence angles ($\alpha$) and shock-upstream Mach numbers ($M_1$). It is found that the nonlinear generation of vorticity at the shock has a significant contribution from the intermodal interaction between vorticity and acoustic waves. Vorticity generation is also strongly influenced by the curvature of the normal shock wave, especially for high incidence angles. Further, the weakly nonlinear analysis is able to predict the correct scaling of the nonlinear effects observed in the numerical simulations. The analysis also predicts a Mach number dependent limit for the validity of LIA in terms of the maximum possible amplitude of the upstream vorticity wave.

We present direct numerical simulation results of turbulent open channel flow at bulk Reynolds numbers up to 12 000, coupled with (passive) scalar transport at Schmidt numbers up to 200. Care is taken to capture the very large-scale motions which appear already for relatively modest Reynolds numbers. The transfer velocity at the flat, free surface is found to scale with the Schmidt number to the power ‘$-1/2$’, in accordance with previous studies and theoretical predictions for uncontaminated surfaces. The scaling of the transfer velocity with Reynolds number is found to vary, depending on the Reynolds number definition used. To compare the present results with those obtained in other systems, we define a turbulent Reynolds number at the edge of the surface-influenced layer. This allows us to probe the two-regime model of Theofanous et al. (Intl J. Heat Mass Transfer, vol. 19, 1976, pp. 613–624), which is found to correctly predict that small-scale vortices significantly affect the mass transfer for turbulent Reynolds numbers larger than 500. It is further established that the root mean square of the surface divergence is, on average, proportional to the mean transfer velocity. However, the spatial correlation between instantaneous surface divergence and transfer velocity tends to decrease with increasing Schmidt number and increase with increasing Reynolds number. The latter is shown to be caused by an enhancement of the correlation in high-speed regions, which in turn is linked to the spatial distribution of surface-parallel vortices.

This paper presents an experimental study of the influence of heat losses on the onset of thermoacoustic instabilities in methane–air premixed flames propagating in a horizontal tube of diameter, $D = 10$ mm. Flames are ignited at the open end of the tube and propagate towards the closed end undergoing strong oscillations of different features owing to the interaction with acoustic waves. The frequency of oscillation and its axial location are controlled through the tube length $L$ and the intensity of heat losses. These parameters are respectively modified in the experiments by a moveable piston and a circulating thermal bath of water prescribing temperature conditions. Main experimental observations show that classical one-dimensional predictions of the oscillation frequency do not accurately describe the phenomena under non-adiabatic real scenarios. In addition to the experimental measurements, a quasi-one-dimensional analysis of the burnt gases is provided, which introduces the effect of heat losses at the wall of the tube on the interplay between the acoustic field and the reaction sheet. As a result, this analysis provides an improved description of the interaction and accurately predicts the excited flame-oscillation harmonics through the eigenvalues of the non-adiabatic acoustics model. Unlike the original one-dimensional analysis, the comparison between the flame oscillation frequency provided by the non-adiabatic extended theory and the frequencies measured in our experiments is in excellent agreement in the whole range of temperatures considered. This confirms the importance of heat losses in the modulation of the instabilities and the transition between different flame oscillation regimes.

We use linear stability analysis and direct numerical simulations to investigate the coupling between centrifugal instabilities, solute transport and osmotic pressure in a Taylor–Couette configuration that models rotating dynamic filtration devices. The geometry consists of a Taylor–Couette cell with a superimposed radial throughflow of solvent across two semi-permeable cylinders. Both cylinders totally reject the solute, inducing the build-up of a concentration boundary layer. The solute retroacts on the velocity field via the osmotic pressure associated with the concentration differences across the semi-permeable cylinders. Our results show that the presence of osmotic pressure strongly alters the dynamics of the centrifugal instabilities and substantially reduces the critical conditions above which Taylor vortices are observed. It is also found that this enhancement of the hydrodynamic instabilities eventually plateaus as the osmotic pressure is further increased. We propose a mechanism to explain how osmosis and instabilities cooperate and develop an analytical criterion to bound the parameter range for which osmosis fosters the hydrodynamic instabilities.

We investigate the impact of wettability distribution, pore size distribution and pore geometry on the statistical behaviour of trapping in pore-throat networks during capillary displacement. Through theoretical analyses and numerical simulations, we propose and prove that the trapping patterns, defined as the percentage and distribution of trapped elements, are determined by four dimensionless control parameters. The range of all possible trapping patterns and how the patterns are dependent on the four parameters are obtained. The results help us to understand the impact of wettability and structure on trapping behaviour in disordered media.

Recent studies on viscous streaming flows in two dimensions have elucidated the impact of body curvature variations on resulting flow topology and dynamics, with opportunities for microfluidic applications. Following that, we present here a three-dimensional characterization of streaming flows as functions of changes in body geometry and topology, starting from the well-known case of a sphere to progressively arrive at toroidal shapes. We leverage direct numerical simulations and dynamical systems theory to systematically analyse the reorganization of streaming flows into a dynamically rich set of regimes, the origins of which are explained using bifurcation theory.

The dynamics of the microlayer beneath a growing bubble in nucleate boiling significantly impacts the heat-transfer characteristics of the process. The minute thickness of the microlayer motivates the use of direct numerical simulation (DNS) to model its behaviour if empirical models are to be avoided. In this work, we develop a computational strategy for utilising DNS to model nucleate boiling by resolving explicitly the microlayer, directly coupling, in a stable manner, the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations with the conjugate heat transfer between the solid and fluid domains. To this end, closure models for the treatment of interfacial heat transfer and the dynamic contact angle are introduced and substantiated. The computational procedure is validated against relevant experimental data recently measured at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; it is shown that the main observed growth features and surface heat-transfer characteristics are well reproduced using our model. We go on to perform a sensitivity study of the dependence of the initial microlayer thickness distribution on the applied superheat and fluid properties. The results indicate that an equation derived from lubrication theory captures the observed trends well. Finally, a first demonstration of DNS of boiling with an explicitly resolved microlayer in three-dimensional Cartesian coordinates is presented in one of the appendices.

We revisit the somewhat classical problem of the linear stability of a rigidly rotating liquid column in this article. Although the literature pertaining to this problem dates back to 1959, the relation between inviscid and viscous stability criteria has not yet been clarified. While the viscous criterion for stability, given by $We < n^2 + k^2 -1$, is both necessary and sufficient, this relation has only been shown to be sufficient in the inviscid case. Here, $We = \rho \varOmega ^2 a^3 / \gamma$ is the Weber number and measures the relative magnitudes of the centrifugal and surface tension forces, with $\varOmega$ being the angular velocity of the rigidly rotating column, $a$ the column radius, $\rho$ the density of the fluid and $\gamma$ the surface tension coefficient; $k$ and $n$ denote the axial and azimuthal wavenumbers of the imposed perturbation. We show that the subtle difference between the inviscid and viscous criteria arises from the surprisingly complicated picture of inviscid stability in the $We$–$k$ plane. For all $n > 1$, the viscously unstable region, corresponding to $We > n^2 + k^2-1$, contains an infinite hierarchy of inviscidly stable islands ending in cusps, with a dominant leading island. Only the dominant island, now infinite in extent along the $We$ axis, persists for $n=1$. This picture may be understood, based on the underlying eigenspectrum, as arising from the cascade of coalescences between a retrograde mode, that is the continuation of the cograde surface-tension-driven mode across the zero Doppler frequency point, and successive retrograde Coriolis modes constituting an infinite hierarchy.

The unsteady force response of an accelerating flat plate, subjected to controlled spanwise bending, is investigated experimentally. The flat plate was held normal to the flow (at an angle of attack of $90^{\circ }$), and it was dynamically bent along the spanwise direction with the help of internal actuation. Two bending directions were tested. In one case, part of the plate (denoted by flexion ratio) was bent into the incoming flow (the bend-down configuration). In another case, the plate was bent away from the flow (the bend-up configuration). We used two different aspect ratio ($AR$) plates, namely $AR = 2$ and 3. Three acceleration numbers, namely $A_c = 0.57$, 1.6 and 3.2 (corresponding to dimensional acceleration of 0.036, 0.1 and 0.2 m s$^{-2}$, respectively) were tested with a fixed terminal Reynolds number (Re) of 18 000. For each acceleration number, three bending durations, namely 1.2, 2.4 and 3.6 s were implemented. The results indicate that the highest impulse was imparted by the highest bending rate (duration 1.2 s) during all three accelerations tested. We show that controlled spanwise bending can significantly change the unsteady force response by manipulating the inertial forces during a start-up manoeuvre. The unsteady forces depend on the vector sum of the forward acceleration and the bending acceleration of the plate. The unsteady drag was augmented when the plate was bent towards the incoming flow. The initial force peaks were significantly reduced when the bending direction was reversed. The development of the edge vortices from the flat plate was measured with the help of particle image velocimetry (PIV) at the 70 % and the 90 % span locations. The PIV measurements were also carried out at the midchord plane closer to the tip region to capture the growth of the tip vortex. The vorticity field calculated from these PIV measurements revealed that controlled bending contributed to a variation in the circulation growth of the edge vortices. During the bend-down case, the circulation growth was faster and the tip vortices stayed closer to the plate. This resulted in increased interaction with the edge vortex at the 90 % span. This interaction was more severe for $AR = 2$. During the bend-up case, the growth of the edge vortex was delayed, but the vortex grew for a longer time compared with the bend-down case. Finally, a mathematical model is presented which correctly captured the trend of the force histories measured experimentally during both the bend-up and bend-down cases.
