Let n ≥ 2 be a fixed positive integer, q ≥ 3 and c, ℓ be integers with (nc, q)=1 and ℓ|n. Suppose and consist of consecutive integers which are coprime to q. We define the cardinality of a set: The main purpose of this paper is to use the estimates of Gauss sums and Kloosterman sums to study the asymptotic properties of N(, , c, n, ℓ; q), and to give an interesting asymptotic formula for it.

We provide a new computation of the K-theory of the group C*-algebra of the solvable Baumslag–Solitar group BS(1, n) (n ≠ 1); our computation is based on the Pimsner–Voiculescu 6-terms exact sequence, by viewing BS(1, n) as a semi-direct product ℤ[1/n] ⋊ ℤ. We deduce from it a new proof of the Baum–Connes conjecture with trivial coefficients for BS(1, n).

During the last few years several articles on asymptotic martingales (amarts) have appeared. The first unified treatment was given by Edgar and Sucheston in [7], where further references can be found. The purpose of this paper is to add some further results to the theory of amarts.

The purpose of this paper is to establish some basic properties of the Wielandt subgroup of a polycyclic group. The Wielandt subgroup of a group G is defined to be the intersection of the normalisers of all the subnormal subgroups of G and is denoted by ω(G). In 1958 Wielandt [9] showed that any minimal normal subgroup with the minimum condition on subnormal subgroups is contained in the Wielandt subgroup: it follows that the Wielandt subgroup of an artinian group is nontrivial. In contrast, the Wielandt subgroup of a polycyclic group can be trivial; an easy example is given by the infinite dihedral group. We will show that the Wielandt subgroup of a polycyclic group is close to being central.

Let G be a finite group. The real genus p(G) [8] is the minimum algebraic genus of any compact bordered Klein surface on which G acts. There are now several results about the real genus parameter. The groups with real genus p ≤ 5 have been classified [8,9,12], and genus formulas have been obtained for several classes of groups [8,9,10,11,12]. Most notably, McCullough calculated the real genus of each finite abelian group [13]. In addition, there is a good general lower bound for the real genus of a finite group [11].

Let k be an algebraically closed field. By an algebra is meant an associative finite dimensional k-algebra A with an identity. We are interested in studying the representation theory of Λ, that is, in describing the category mod Λ of finitely generated right Λ-modules. Thus we may, without loss of generality, assume that Λ is basic and connected. For our purpose, one strategy consists in using covering techniques to reduce the problem to the case where the algebra is simply connected, then in solving the problem in this latter case. This strategy was proved efficient for representation-finite algebras (that is, algebras having only finitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable modules) and representation-finite simply connected algebras are by now well-understood: see, for instance [5], [7],[8]. While little is known about covering techniques in the representation-infinite case, it is clearly an interesting problem to describe the representation-infinite simply connected algebras. The objective of this paper is to give a criterion for the simple connectedness of a class of (mostly representationinfinite) algebras.

All groups considered are finite. In recent years a number of generalizations of the classic Jordan-Hölder Theorem have been obtained (see [7], Theorem A.9.13): in a finite group G a one-to-one correspondence as in the Jordan-Holder Theorem can be defined preserving not only G-isomorphic chief factors but even their property of being Frattini or non-Frattini chief factors. In [2] and [13] a new direction of generalization is presented: the above correspondence can be defined in such a way that the corresponding non-Frattini chief factors have the same complement (supplement).

It is an open question whether every strongly locally $\varphi$-symmetric contact metric space is a $(\kappa,\mu)$-space. We show that the answer is positive for locally homogeneous contact metric manifolds.

The Wielandt subgroup ω(G) of a group G is defined to be the intersection of all normalizers of subnormal subgroups of G; the terms of the Wielandt series of G are defined, inductively, by putting ω0(G) = 1 and (ωn+1(G)/ωn(G) = ω(G/ωn(G)). If, for some integer n, ωn(G) = G, then G is said to have finite Wielandt length; the Wielandt length of G being the minimal n such that ωn(G) = G.

R. A. Rankin [3] considered the problem of finding, for each integer n ≧ 3, a sequence of positive integers containing no n−term geometric progression. He constructed such sets Bn having asymptotic density

For example A3 ≑ 0·71975, A4 ≑ 0·8626, and An→1 as n → ∞.

We present a classification of the nilpotent primitive subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(n,q)$, up to conjugacy in $\mathrm{GL}(n,q)$. Groups in the classification are specified explicitly by generating sets of matrices, where each generating set has size at most 2. Additionally we give an algorithm designed to provide electronic access to the classification for any $n$ and $q$.

The Lindenstrauss formula

which states a strong relationship between the (Clarkson) modulus of uniform convexity δx of a Banach space X and the modulus of uniform smoothness px* of the conjugate space X*, is well known. Following the idea of the definitions of nearly uniform smooth space by S. Prus and modulus of uniform smoothness we define a modulus of nearly uniform smoothness and prove some Lindenstrauss type formulae concerning this modulus and the modulus of nearly uniform convexity for some measures of noncompactness.

We prove the CR version of the Obata's result for the first eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian in the setting of a compact strictly pseudoconvex pseudohermitian three-dimensional manifold with non-negative CR-Paneitz operator which satisfies a Lichnerowicz-type condition. We show that if the first positive eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian takes the smallest possible value, then, up to a homothety of the pseudohermitian structure, the manifold is the standard Sasakian three-dimensional unit sphere.

If G is the group of holomorphic automorphisms of a bounded symmetric domain, then G has a distinguished class of irreducible unitary representations called the holomorphic discrete series of G. These representations have been studied by Harish-Chandra in [7]. On the Lie algebra level, the Harish-Chandra modules corresponding to the holomorphic discrete series representations are highest weight modules. Even for G as above, it turns out that not all the unitary highest weight modules belong to the holomorphic discrete series but there exists a condition on the highest weight which characterizes the holomorphic discrete series among the unitary highest weight representations. They can be defined as those unitary highest weight representations with square integrable matrix coefficients.

R is called a right WV-ring if each simple right R-module is injective relative to proper cyclics. If R is a right WV-ring, then R is right uniform or a right V-ring. It is shown that a right WV-ring R is right noetherian if and only if each right cyclic module is a direct sum of a projective module and a CS (complements are summands, a.k.a. ‘extending modules’) or noetherian module. For a finitely generated module M with projective socle over a V-ring R such that every subfactor of M is a direct sum of a projective module and a CS or noetherian module, we show M = X ⊕ T, where X is semisimple and T is noetherian with zero socle. In the case where M = R, we get R = S ⊕ T, where S is a semisimple artinian ring and T is a direct sum of right noetherian simple rings with zero socle. In addition, if R is a von Neumann regular ring, then it is semisimple artinian.

This paper deals with the following degenerate and singular equation with non-local source and absorption. The existence of a unique classical non-negative solution is established and the sufficient conditions for the solution that exists globally or blows up in finite time are obtained.

Talagrand has shown [4, p. 76] that there exists a continuous linear operator from L1[0, 1] to c0 which is not a Dunford-Pettis operator. In contrast to this result, Gretsky and Ostroy [2] have recently proved that every positive operator from L[0, 1] to c0 is a Dunford-Pettis operator, hence that every regular operator between these spaces (i.e. a difference of positive operators) is Dunford-Pettis.

The object of this note is to obtain a relation between the Laplace transform of tμf(t) and the Hankel transform of f(t), when ℛ(μ) > − 1. The result is stated in the form of a theorem which is then illustrated by an example.

The covers of cyclic acts over monoids were investigated by Mahmoudi and Renshaw (M. Mahmoudi and J. Renshaw, On covers of cyclic acts over monoids, Semigroup Forum77 (2008), 325–338) and the authors posed some open problems. In the present paper, we give answers to their problems 1 and 5, and we also give a sufficient and necessary condition that a cyclic act has a weakly pullback flat cover.
