For an infinity of number rings we express stable motivic invariants in terms of topological data determined by the complex numbers, the real numbers and finite fields. We use this to extend Morel’s identification of the endomorphism ring of the motivic sphere with the Grothendieck–Witt ring of quadratic forms to deeper base schemes.

Our main result establishes Andrews’ conjecture for the asymptotic of the generating function for the number of integer partitions of $n$ without $k$ consecutive parts. The methods we develop are applicable in obtaining asymptotics for stochastic processes that avoid patterns; as a result they yield asymptotics for the number of partitions that avoid patterns.

Holroyd, Liggett, and Romik, in connection with certain bootstrap percolation models, introduced the study of partitions without $k$ consecutive parts. Andrews showed that when $k=2$, the generating function for these partitions is a mixed-mock modular form and, thus, has modularity properties which can be utilized in the study of this generating function. For $k>2$, the asymptotic properties of the generating functions have proved more difficult to obtain. Using $q$-series identities and the $k=2$ case as evidence, Andrews stated a conjecture for the asymptotic behavior. Extensive computational evidence for the conjecture in the case $k=3$ was given by Zagier.

This paper improved upon early approaches to this problem by identifying and overcoming two sources of error. Since the writing of this paper, a more precise asymptotic result was established by Bringmann, Kane, Parry, and Rhoades. That approach uses very different methods.

We study the distribution of the length of longest increasing subsequences in random permutations of n integers as n grows large and establish an asymptotic expansion in powers of $n^{-1/3}$. Whilst the limit law was already shown by Baik, Deift and Johansson to be the GUE Tracy–Widom distribution F, we find explicit analytic expressions of the first few finite-size correction terms as linear combinations of higher order derivatives of F with rational polynomial coefficients. Our proof replaces Johansson’s de-Poissonization, which is based on monotonicity as a Tauberian condition, by analytic de-Poissonization of Jacquet and Szpankowski, which is based on growth conditions in the complex plane; it is subject to a tameness hypothesis concerning complex zeros of the analytically continued Poissonized length distribution. In a preparatory step an expansion of the hard-to-soft edge transition law of LUE is studied, which is lifted to an expansion of the Poissonized length distribution for large intensities. Finally, expansions of Stirling-type approximations and of the expected value and variance of the length distribution are given.

In 1964, Erdős proposed the problem of estimating the Turán number of the d-dimensional hypercube $Q_d$. Since $Q_d$ is a bipartite graph with maximum degree d, it follows from results of Füredi and Alon, Krivelevich, Sudakov that $\mathrm {ex}(n,Q_d)=O_d(n^{2-1/d})$. A recent general result of Sudakov and Tomon implies the slightly stronger bound $\mathrm {ex}(n,Q_d)=o(n^{2-1/d})$. We obtain the first power-improvement for this old problem by showing that $\mathrm {ex}(n,Q_d)=O_d\left (n^{2-\frac {1}{d-1}+\frac {1}{(d-1)2^{d-1}}}\right )$. This answers a question of Liu. Moreover, our techniques give a power improvement for a larger class of graphs than cubes.

We use a similar method to prove that any n-vertex, properly edge-coloured graph without a rainbow cycle has at most $O(n(\log n)^2)$ edges, improving the previous best bound of $n(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ by Tomon. Furthermore, we show that any properly edge-coloured n-vertex graph with $\omega (n\log n)$ edges contains a cycle which is almost rainbow: that is, almost all edges in it have a unique colour. This latter result is tight.

Given a negatively graded Calabi-Yau algebra, we regard it as a DG algebra with vanishing differentials and study its cluster category. We show that this DG algebra is sign-twisted Calabi-Yau and realise its cluster category as a triangulated hull of an orbit category of a derived category and as the singularity category of a finite-dimensional Iwanaga-Gorenstein algebra. Along the way, we give two results that stand on their own. First, we show that the derived category of coherent sheaves over a Calabi-Yau algebra has a natural cluster tilting subcategory whose dimension is determined by the Calabi-Yau dimension and the a-invariant of the algebra. Second, we prove that two DG orbit categories obtained from a DG endofunctor and its homotopy inverse are quasi-equivalent. As an application, we show that the higher cluster category of a higher representation infinite algebra is triangle equivalent to the singularity category of an Iwanaga-Gorenstein algebra, which is explicitly described. Also, we demonstrate that our results generalise the context of Keller–Murfet–Van den Bergh on the derived orbit category involving a square root of the AR translation.

We give a short new proof of a recent result of Hanlon-Hicks-Lazarev about toric varieties. As in their work, this leads to a proof of a conjecture of Berkesch-Erman-Smith on virtual resolutions and to a resolution of the diagonal in the simplicial case.

We prove novel asymptotic freeness results in tracial ultraproduct von Neumann algebras. In particular, we show that whenever $M = M_1 \ast M_2$ is a tracial free product von Neumann algebra and $u_1 \in \mathscr U(M_1)$, $u_2 \in \mathscr U(M_2)$ are Haar unitaries, the relative commutants $\{u_1\}' \cap M^{\mathcal U}$ and $\{u_2\}' \cap M^{\mathcal U}$ are freely independent in the ultraproduct $M^{\mathcal U}$. Our proof relies on Mei–Ricard’s results [MR16] regarding $\operatorname {L}^p$-boundedness (for all $1 < p < +\infty $) of certain Fourier multipliers in tracial amalgamated free products von Neumann algebras. We derive two applications. Firstly, we obtain a general absorption result in tracial amalgamated free products that recovers several previous maximal amenability/Gamma absorption results. Secondly, we prove a new lifting theorem which we combine with our asymptotic freeness results and Chifan–Ioana–Kunnawalkam Elayavalli’s recent construction [CIKE22] to provide the first example of a $\mathrm {II_1}$ factor that does not have property Gamma and is not elementary equivalent to any free product of diffuse tracial von Neumann algebras.

A generating set for a finite group G is minimal if no proper subset generates G, and $m(G)$ denotes the maximal size of a minimal generating set for G. We prove a conjecture of Lucchini, Moscatiello and Spiga by showing that there exist $a,b> 0$ such that any finite group G satisfies $m(G) \leqslant a \cdot \delta (G)^b$, for $\delta (G) = \sum _{p \text { prime}} m(G_p)$, where $G_p$ is a Sylow p-subgroup of G. To do this, we first bound $m(G)$ for all almost simple groups of Lie type (until now, no nontrivial bounds were known except for groups of rank $1$ or $2$). In particular, we prove that there exist $a,b> 0$ such that any finite simple group G of Lie type of rank r over the field $\mathbb {F}_{p^f}$ satisfies $r + \omega (f) \leqslant m(G) \leqslant a(r + \omega (f))^b$, where $\omega (f)$ denotes the number of distinct prime divisors of f. In the process, we confirm a conjecture of Gill and Liebeck that there exist $a,b> 0$ such that a minimal base for a faithful primitive action of an almost simple group of Lie type of rank r over $\mathbb {F}_{p^f}$ has size at most $ar^b + \omega (f)$.

Given a sequence $\boldsymbol {k} := (k_1,\ldots ,k_s)$ of natural numbers and a graph G, let $F(G;\boldsymbol {k})$ denote the number of colourings of the edges of G with colours $1,\dots ,s$ , such that, for every $c \in \{1,\dots ,s\}$ , the edges of colour c contain no clique of order $k_c$ . Write $F(n;\boldsymbol {k})$ to denote the maximum of $F(G;\boldsymbol {k})$ over all graphs G on n vertices. This problem was first considered by Erdős and Rothschild in 1974, but it has been solved only for a very small number of nontrivial cases. In previous work with Pikhurko and Yilma, (Math. Proc. Cambridge Phil. Soc. 163 (2017), 341–356), we constructed a finite optimisation problem whose maximum is equal to the limit of $\log _2 F(n;\boldsymbol {k})/{n\choose 2}$ as n tends to infinity and proved a stability theorem for complete multipartite graphs G.

In this paper, we provide a sufficient condition on $\boldsymbol {k}$ which guarantees a general stability theorem for any graph G, describing the asymptotic structure of G on n vertices with $F(G;\boldsymbol {k}) = F(n;\boldsymbol {k}) \cdot 2^{o(n^2)}$ in terms of solutions to the optimisation problem. We apply our theorem to systematically recover existing stability results as well as all cases with $s=2$ . The proof uses a version of symmetrisation on edge-coloured weighted multigraphs.

For a category $\mathcal {E}$ with finite limits and well-behaved countable coproducts, we construct a model structure, called the effective model structure, on the category of simplicial objects in $\mathcal {E}$ , generalising the Kan–Quillen model structure on simplicial sets. We then prove that the effective model structure is left and right proper and satisfies descent in the sense of Rezk. As a consequence, we obtain that the associated $\infty $ -category has finite limits, colimits satisfying descent, and is locally Cartesian closed when $\mathcal {E}$ is but is not a higher topos in general. We also characterise the $\infty $ -category presented by the effective model structure, showing that it is the full sub-category of presheaves on $\mathcal {E}$ spanned by Kan complexes in $\mathcal {E}$ , a result that suggests a close analogy with the theory of exact completions.

The box-ball system (BBS), which was introduced by Takahashi and Satsuma in 1990, is a soliton cellular automaton. Its dynamics can be linearized by a few methods, among which the best known is the Kerov–Kirillov–Reschetikhin (KKR) bijection using rigged partitions. Recently, a new linearization method in terms of ‘slot configurations’ was introduced by Ferrari–Nguyen–Rolla–Wang, but its relations to existing ones have not been clarified. In this paper, we investigate this issue and clarify the relation between the two linearizations. For this, we introduce a novel way of describing the BBS dynamics using a carrier with seat numbers. We show that the seat number configuration also linearizes the BBS and reveals explicit relations between the KKR bijection and the slot configuration. In addition, by using these explicit relations, we also show that even in case of finite carrier capacity the BBS can be linearized via the slot configuration.

We introduce a contact invariant in the bordered sutured Heegaard Floer homology of a three-manifold with boundary. The input for the invariant is a contact manifold $(M, \xi , \mathcal {F})$ whose convex boundary is equipped with a signed singular foliation $\mathcal {F}$ closely related to the characteristic foliation. Such a manifold admits a family of foliated open book decompositions classified by a Giroux correspondence, as described in [LV20]. We use a special class of foliated open books to construct admissible bordered sutured Heegaard diagrams and identify well-defined classes $c_D$ and $c_A$ in the corresponding bordered sutured modules.

Foliated open books exhibit user-friendly gluing behavior, and we show that the pairing on invariants induced by gluing compatible foliated open books recovers the Heegaard Floer contact invariant for closed contact manifolds. We also consider a natural map associated to forgetting the foliation $\mathcal {F}$ in favor of the dividing set and show that it maps the bordered sutured invariant to the contact invariant of a sutured manifold defined by Honda–Kazez–Matić.

We classify all mutation-finite quivers with real weights. We show that every finite mutation class not originating from an integer skew-symmetrisable matrix has a geometric realisation by reflections. We also explore the structure of acyclic representatives in finite mutation classes and their relations to acute-angled simplicial domains in the corresponding reflection groups.

We prove that any element in a sufficiently large transitive finite simple permutation group is a product of two derangements.

In the article [CEGS20b], we introduced various moduli stacks of two-dimensional tamely potentially Barsotti–Tate representations of the absolute Galois group of a p-adic local field, as well as related moduli stacks of Breuil–Kisin modules with descent data. We study the irreducible components of these stacks, establishing, in particular, that the components of the former are naturally indexed by certain Serre weights.

Let $(S,L)$ be a general polarised Enriques surface, with L not numerically 2-divisible. We prove the existence of regular components of all Severi varieties of irreducible nodal curves in the linear system $|L|$ , that is, for any number of nodes $\delta =0, \ldots , p_a(L)-1$ . This solves a classical open problem and gives a positive answer to a recent conjecture of Pandharipande–Schmitt, under the additional condition of non-2-divisibility.

We modify an argument of Hablicsek and Scherr to show that if a collection of points in $\mathbb{C}^{d}$ spans many $r$ -rich lines, then many of these lines must lie in a common $(d-1)$ -flat. This is closely related to a previous result of Dvir and Gopi.

We show that the massless particle spectrum in a four-dimensional conformal Haag–Kastler net is generated by a free field subnet. If the massless particle spectrum is scalar, then the free field subnet decouples as a tensor product component.

To any free group automorphism, we associate a real pretree with several nice properties. First, it has a rigid/non-nesting action of the free group with trivial arc stabilizers. Secondly, there is an expanding pretree-automorphism of the real pretree that represents the free group automorphism. Finally and crucially, the loxodromic elements are exactly those whose (conjugacy class) length grows exponentially under iteration of the automorphism; thus, the action on the real pretree is able to detect the growth type of an element.

This construction extends the theory of metric trees that has been used to study free group automorphisms. The new idea is that one can equivariantly blow up an isometric action on a real tree with respect to other real trees and get a rigid action on a treelike structure known as a real pretree. Topology plays no role in this construction as all the work is done in the language of pretrees (intervals).

We consider momentum push-forwards of measures arising as quantum limits (semiclassical measures) of eigenfunctions of a point scatterer on the standard flat torus ${\mathbb T}^2 = {\mathbb R}^2/{\mathbb Z}^{2}$ . Given any probability measure arising by placing delta masses, with equal weights, on ${\mathbb Z}^2$ -lattice points on circles and projecting to the unit circle, we show that the mass of certain subsequences of eigenfunctions, in momentum space, completely localizes on that measure and are completely delocalized in position (i.e., concentration on Lagrangian states). We also show that the mass, in momentum, can fully localize on more exotic measures, for example, singular continuous ones with support on Cantor sets. Further, we can give examples of quantum limits that are certain convex combinations of such measures, in particular showing that the set of quantum limits is richer than the ones arising only from weak limits of lattice points on circles. The proofs exploit features of the half-dimensional sieve and behavior of multiplicative functions in short intervals, enabling precise control of the location of perturbed eigenvalues.
