We prove that the asymptotics of ergodic integrals along an invariant foliation of a toral Anosov diffeomorphism, or of a pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphism on a compact orientable surface of higher genus, is determined (up to a logarithmic error) by the action of the diffeomorphism on the cohomology of the surface. As a consequence of our argument and of the results of Giulietti and Liverani [Parabolic dynamics and anisotropic Banach spaces. J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS)21(9) (2019), 2793–2858] on horospherical averages, toral Anosov diffeomorphisms have no Ruelle resonances in the open interval $(1, e^{h_{\mathrm {top}}})$ .

Let $\phi :X\to X$ be a homeomorphism of a compact metric space X. For any continuous function $F:X\to \mathbb {R}$ there is a one-parameter group $\alpha ^{F}$ of automorphisms (or a flow) on the crossed product $C^*$ -algebra $C(X)\rtimes _{\phi }\mathbb {Z}$ defined such that $\alpha ^{F}_{t}(fU)=fUe^{-itF}$ when $f \in C(X)$ and U is the canonical unitary in the construction of the crossed product. In this paper we study the Kubo--Martin--Schwinger (KMS) states for these flows by developing an intimate relation to the ergodic theory of non-singular transformations and show that the structure of KMS states can be very rich and complicated. Our results are complete concerning the set of possible inverse temperatures; in particular, we show that when $C(X) \rtimes _{\phi } \mathbb Z$ is simple this set is either $\{0\}$ or the whole line $\mathbb R$ .

We develop a forcing theory of topological entropy for Reeb flows in dimension three. A transverse link L in a closed contact $3$ -manifold $(Y,\xi )$ is said to force topological entropy if $(Y,\xi )$ admits a Reeb flow with vanishing topological entropy, and every Reeb flow on $(Y,\xi )$ realizing L as a set of periodic Reeb orbits has positive topological entropy. Our main results establish topological conditions on a transverse link L, which imply that L forces topological entropy. These conditions are formulated in terms of two Floer theoretical invariants: the cylindrical contact homology on the complement of transverse links introduced by Momin [A. Momin. J. Mod. Dyn.5 (2011), 409–472], and the strip Legendrian contact homology on the complement of transverse links, introduced by Alves [M. R. R. Alves. PhD Thesis, Université Libre de Bruxelles, 2014] and further developed here. We then use these results to show that on every closed contact $3$ -manifold that admits a Reeb flow with vanishing topological entropy, there exist transverse knots that force topological entropy.

We establish several new characterizations of amenable $W^*$ - and $C^*$ -dynamical systems over arbitrary locally compact groups. In the $W^*$ -setting we show that amenability is equivalent to (1) a Reiter property and (2) the existence of a certain net of completely positive Herz–Schur multipliers of $(M,G,\alpha )$ converging point weak* to the identity of $G\bar {\ltimes }M$ . In the $C^*$ -setting, we prove that amenability of $(A,G,\alpha )$ is equivalent to an analogous Herz–Schur multiplier approximation of the identity of the reduced crossed product $G\ltimes A$ , as well as a particular case of the positive weak approximation property of Bédos and Conti [On discrete twisted $C^*$ -dynamical systems, Hilbert $C^*$ -modules and regularity. Münster J. Math.5 (2012), 183–208] (generalized to the locally compact setting). When $Z(A^{**})=Z(A)^{**}$ , it follows that amenability is equivalent to the 1-positive approximation property of Exel and Ng [Approximation property of $C^*$ -algebraic bundles. Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc.132(3) (2002), 509–522]. In particular, when $A=C_0(X)$ is commutative, amenability of $(C_0(X),G,\alpha )$ coincides with topological amenability of the G-space $(G,X)$ .

It is shown that for a dense $G_\delta $ -subset of the subgroup of non-singular transformations (of a standard infinite $\sigma $ -finite measure space) whose Poisson suspensions are non-singular, the corresponding Poisson suspensions are ergodic and of Krieger’s type III1.

Entropy dimension is an entropy-type quantity which takes values in $[0,1]$ and classifies different levels of intermediate growth rate of complexity for dynamical systems. In this paper, we consider the complexity of skew products of irrational rotations with Bernoulli systems, which can be viewed as deterministic walks in random sceneries, and show that this class of models can have any given entropy dimension by choosing suitable rotations for the base system.

A gap mapping is a discontinuous interval mapping with two strictly increasing branches that have a gap between their ranges. They are one-dimensional dynamical systems, which arise in the study of certain higher dimensional flows, for example the Lorenz flow and the Cherry flow. In this paper, we prove hyperbolicity of renormalization acting on $C^3$ dissipative gap mappings, and show that the topological conjugacy classes of infinitely renormalizable gap mappings are $C^1$ manifolds.

A probability measure is a characteristic measure of a topological dynamical system if it is invariant to the automorphism group of the system. We show that zero entropy shifts always admit characteristic measures. We use similar techniques to show that automorphism groups of minimal zero entropy shifts are sofic.

We prove by methods of harmonic analysis a result on the existence of solutions for twisted cohomological equations on translation surfaces with loss of derivatives at most $3+$ in Sobolev spaces. As a consequence we prove that product translation flows on (three-dimensional) translation manifolds which are products of a (higher-genus) translation surface with a (flat) circle are stable in the sense of A. Katok. In turn, our result on product flows implies a stability result of time- $\tau $ maps of translation flows on translation surfaces.

We introduce the notion of balanced strong shift equivalence between square non-negative integer matrices, and show that two finite graphs with no sinks are one-sided eventually conjugate if and only if their adjacency matrices are conjugate to balanced strong shift equivalent matrices. Moreover, we show that such graphs are eventually conjugate if and only if one can be reached by the other via a sequence of out-splits and balanced in-splits, the latter move being a variation of the classical in-split move introduced by Williams in his study of shifts of finite type. We also relate one-sided eventual conjugacies to certain block maps on the finite paths of the graphs. These characterizations emphasize that eventual conjugacy is the one-sided analog of two-sided conjugacy.

We investigate the local dynamics of antiholomorphic diffeomorphisms around a parabolic fixed point. We first give a normal form. Then we give a complete classification including a modulus space for antiholomorphic germs with a parabolic fixed point under analytic conjugacy. We then study some geometric applications: existence of real analytic invariant curves, existence of holomorphic and antiholomorphic roots of holomorphic and antiholomorphic parabolic germs, and commuting holomorphic and antiholomorphic parabolic germs.

We consider random walks on the group of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the real line ${\mathbb R}$ . In particular, the fundamental question of uniqueness of an invariant measure of the generated process is raised. This problem was studied by Choquet and Deny [Sur l’équation de convolution $\mu = \mu * \sigma $ . C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris250 (1960), 799–801] in the context of random walks generated by translations of the line. Nowadays the answer is quite well understood in general settings of strongly contractive systems. Here we focus on a broader class of systems satisfying the conditions of recurrence, contraction and unbounded action. We prove that under these conditions the random process possesses a unique invariant Radon measure on ${\mathbb R}$ . Our work can be viewed as following on from Babillot et al [The random difference equation $X_n=A_n X_{n-1}+B_n$ in the critical case. Ann. Probab.25(1) (1997), 478–493] and Deroin et al [Symmetric random walk on $\mathrm {HOMEO}^{+}(\mathbb {R})$ . Ann. Probab.41(3B) (2013), 2066–2089].

We prove that a hyperbolic group admits a strongly aperiodic subshift of finite type if and only if it has at most one end.

We consider groupoids constructed from a finite number of commuting local homeomorphisms acting on a compact metric space and study generalized Ruelle operators and $ C^{\ast } $ -algebras associated to these groupoids. We provide a new characterization of $ 1 $ -cocycles on these groupoids taking values in a locally compact abelian group, given in terms of $ k $ -tuples of continuous functions on the unit space satisfying certain canonical identities. Using this, we develop an extended Ruelle–Perron–Frobenius theory for dynamical systems of several commuting operators ( $ k $ -Ruelle triples and commuting Ruelle operators). Results on KMS states on $ C^{\ast } $ -algebras constructed from these groupoids are derived. When the groupoids being studied come from higher-rank graphs, our results recover existence and uniqueness results for KMS states associated to the graphs.

We use Lerman’s contact cut construction to find a sufficient condition for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of compact surfaces to embed into a closed $3$ -manifold as Poincaré return maps on a global surface of section for a Reeb flow. In particular, we show that the irrational pseudorotations of the $2$ -disc constructed by Fayad and Katok embed into the Reeb flow of a dynamically convex contact form on the $3$ -sphere.

We set out some general criteria to prove the K-property, refining the assumptions used in an earlier paper for the flow case, and introducing the analogous discrete-time result. We also introduce one-sided $\lambda $ -decompositions, as well as multiple techniques for checking the pressure gap required to show the K-property. We apply our results to the family of Mañé diffeomorphisms and the Katok map. Our argument builds on the orbit decomposition theory of Climenhaga and Thompson.

We prove that for $C^0$ -generic homeomorphisms, acting on a compact smooth boundaryless manifold with dimension greater than one, the upper metric mean dimension with respect to the smooth metric coincides with the dimension of the manifold. As an application, we show that the upper box dimension of the set of periodic points of a $C^0$ -generic homeomorphism is equal to the dimension of the manifold. In the case of continuous interval maps, we prove that each level set for the metric mean dimension with respect to the Euclidean distance is $C^0$ -dense in the space of continuous endomorphisms of $[0,1]$ with the uniform topology. Moreover, the maximum value is attained at a $C^0$ -generic subset of continuous interval maps and a dense subset of metrics topologically equivalent to the Euclidean distance.

We define a family $\mathcal {B}(t)$ of compact subsets of the unit interval which provides a filtration of the set of numbers whose continued fraction expansion has bounded digits. We study how the set $\mathcal {B}(t)$ changes as the parameter t ranges in $[0,1]$ , and see that the family undergoes period-doubling bifurcations and displays the same transition pattern from periodic to chaotic behaviour as the family of real quadratic polynomials. The set $\mathcal {E}$ of bifurcation parameters is a fractal set of measure zero and Hausdorff dimension $1$ . The Hausdorff dimension of $\mathcal {B}(t)$ varies continuously with the parameter, and we show that the dimension of each individual set equals the dimension of the corresponding section of the bifurcation set $\mathcal {E}$ .

We show that every countable group with infinite finite conjugacy (FC)-center has the Schmidt property, that is, admits a free, ergodic, measure-preserving action on a standard probability space such that the full group of the associated orbit equivalence relation contains a non-trivial central sequence. As a consequence, every countable, inner amenable group with property (T) has the Schmidt property.

We explore new connections between the dynamics of conservative partially hyperbolic systems and the geometric measure-theoretic properties of their invariant foliations. Our methods are applied to two main classes of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms: fibered partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms and center-fixing partially hyperbolic systems. When the center is one-dimensional, assuming the diffeomorphism is accessible, we prove that the disintegration of the volume measure along the center foliation is either atomic or Lebesgue. Moreover, the latter case is rigid in dimension three (this does not require accessibility): the center foliation is actually smooth and the diffeomorphism is smoothly conjugate to an explicit rigid model. A partial extension to fibered partially hyperbolic systems with compact fibers of any dimension is also obtained. A common feature of these classes of diffeomorphisms is that the center leaves either are compact or can be made compact by taking an appropriate dynamically defined quotient. For volume-preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms whose center foliation is absolutely continuous, if the generic center leaf is a circle, then every center leaf is compact.
