One of the most effective ways of winning an argument is to show that your opponent has begged the question. If you are sufficiently skilful in asking him leading questions and have a good sense of timing you can usually succeed in stripping him to his bare principles, with no ascertainable means for their support. That such a tactic of debate should be so effective suggests that it is more than just a ploy. Indeed some philosophers would say that it takes advantage of a characteristic which is inherent in the nature of argument itself, for all arguments must be question-begging. However, few would voice this conviction publicly—for fear of being accused of begging the question.

Ou bien imposerait-il un nouveau style, une mutation brusque qui secoue les vieilles habitudes et nous oblige à retrouver, par une conversion radicale, les forces neuves d'un premier orient? Je n'ai point à en décider. Remarquons, en passant, que la réminiscence ne s'oppose pas à l'invention; que la creation la plus merveilleuse n'est peut-être qu'une reprise de contact avec un présent déjà-là. Et que l'originalité du philosophe est moins dans la construction d'un monde que dans le retour, à effectuer sans cesse, vers une origine. Dans cette perspective, les questions que nous posons perdent de leur intérêt. Il s'agit moins de savoir si l'on fait du neuf ou de l'ancien que de savoir avec quelque netteté ce que l'on dit et ce que l'on fait.

John Locke is famous for, among other things, his attack on innate ideas. At one time it was felt that Locke had attacked a straw man. But John Yolton has shown that many of Locke's contemporaries held strange views about innate ideas. Appealing to innate ideas was apparently a popular method of establishing principles that might otherwise be difficult to defend. Locke's attack is in good measure directed at those who preferred not to provide arguments. However, when one tries to sort out Locke's own arguments and to reconstruct what the more articulate defenders of innate ideas were interpreted to hold, matters become complicated.

In order to explain the behavior of a human organism, it is necessary to take its environment into consideration. Except for very severe psychotic withdrawal, this has been recognized as a near triviality since Aristotle. But although consideration of the environment may be necessary, it is not sufficient, and it is now generally conceded that a man's behavior cannot be explained solely from a consideration of his present environment and a history of his responses to past environments.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the significance of Kant's claim that geometry is synthetic. I begin by outlining certain criticisms of the Kantian position, criticisms selected with an eye to their popularity, rather than their importance in the abstract. I am no expert on the textual exegesis of Kant, and serious Kantian scholars would not, perhaps, be much troubled by the criticisms I propose to discuss: indeed, they might properly maintain that some of these problems (for example, the significance of non-Euclidean systems) were, for them, resolved long ago. But within the prevailing tradition of English-speaking philosophy certain sorts of criticism of Kant do seem to have sunk deep into our attitudes. It is with these criticisms that I hope to settle accounts. This small aim leads to the more difficult one of trying to understand what Kant means when he says that geometry is synthetic: about this larger task I will make only some preliminary remarks.

In treating of our subject three notions stand out prominently: the noumenon, the thing-in-itself and the transcendental object = X. In his commentary on The Transcendental Analytic, Robert P. Wolff has studied very carefully the question of the relationship between the notion of a transcendental object and that of the thing-in-itself. He noted and explained the passages of The Critique in which Kant means by the transcendental object simply the thing-in-itself and the passages in which he means by it something different such as “the concept of the ground of the unity of a manifold of representations in one consciousness.” There is little to be added, at this time, to Wolff's thorough investigations of this aspect of the problem.

La tendance génerale de la spéculation occidentale à l'époque moderne s'est trouvée profondément affectée par le caractére particulicr de son point de départ dans la philosophic de Descartes. Non seulement le dualisme qui résultait de ses recherches, mais encoré les particularités de son approche et de sa méthode ont exercé une influence durable. Pour Descartes, le problème philosophique se présente surtout comme une recherche de la certitude. II doute de la vérité des diverses formes de la connaissance jusqu'au moment où il parvient à une affirmation dont il se découvre incapable de douter : sa propre existence comme sujet du doute; il ne peut douter qu'il doute; Cogito ergo sum. Notons bien que cette proposition est au point de départ des démarches philosophiques de Descartes; c'est un principe premier, dont dépend la démarche par laquelle il cherche à garantir la connaissance d'un monde objectif. Le progrès se fait au moyen de la théologie rationnelle; en définitive, c'est l'existence de Dieu qui sauve Descartes du solipsisme. Voyant que Dieu est absolument parfait et ne peut pas décevoir ses créatures, il conclut que nous avons le droit d'affirmer que les idées claires et distinctes de la nature, non moins que l'idee claire et distincte de Dieu, sont des représentations de l'existence objective; et par les idées claires et distinctes de la nature, il entend les concepts fondamentaux de la physique — l'etendue, la forme et le mouvement.

The notion of trying is vital to any theory of action. You could hardly analyse much of what people do without mentioning their efforts, successful and unsuccessful. A man's desires and decisions find expression in his attempts. What you are trying to do is also a prime example of what you know without benefit of evidence and observation. It might seem that little attention has been devoted to this central concept because it is philosophically trouble-free. Isn't trying simply exerting yourself—mentally or physically—as a means of bringing about some result you want? And just as you can think of anything under the sun, can't you try to do anything at all? These and similar natural views of trying call forth a swarm of minor, but challenging problems. To begin with, there are at least three relevant species of trying besides the pre-eminent cause-effect or meansends type. I won't take time to belabor the suggestion that trying is merely bracing yourself inwardly, while manifesting your subcutaneous capers through your behavior. But this quaint hypothesis does raise problems. Is trying just doing something? To what extent is it constituted by the agent's intentions and beliefs? As for what a person can try to do, a random survey indicates that there are unsuspected limits. It sounds absurd to describe a person as attempting to choke, to misplace something, to feel pain, to get annoyed or discouraged.

The purpose of this paper is to raise several questions common to the philosophy of history and to discuss the work of Ibn Khaldūn in relation to them. The paper is accordingly divided into four parts. In the first, the questions are identified; in the second, the relevant aspect of Ibn Khaldūn's writing is introduced; in the third, the questions are discussed with reference to Ibn Khaldūn, and in the fourth an attempt is made to show how the questions might be answered.

L'essai de Piaget est de ceux qu'on ne peut négliger, car il pose en termes lucides et incisifs l'un des problèmes essentiels de la philosophie. Ses conclusions sont nettes, et il faudra bien que l'on prenne position à leur égard. Il nous semble pourtant que l'on pourrait discerner dans ses propos deux conclusions distinctes, et qu'il ne serait dès lors pas impossible d'en accepter l'une sans pour autant souscrire à l'autre. La séparation des deux thèmes devrait en tout cas clarifier le problème, et permettre une assimilation plus aisée du contenu complexe et tourmenté de cette œuvre profondément engagée.

Kant offered the following proof for the thesis that the world has a beginning in time:

If we assume that the world has no beginning in time, then up to every given moment an eternity has elapsed, and there has passed away in the world an infinite series of successive states of things. Now the infinity of a series consists in the fact that it can never be completed through successive synthesis. It thus follows that it is impossible for an infinite world-series to have passed away, and that a beginning of the world is therefore a necessary condition of the world's existence.

Dans une récente étude, Émile Gosselin a montré que près du quart des familles de Montréal, gagnant moins de 3,300 dollars par an, vivent dans la pauvreté. Il a indiqué ensuite que si l'on ajoutait à cette population celle qui ne dispose que de 4,000 dollars et qu'il qualifie de familles vivant dans la privation, on atteint le tiers des familles et personnes seules de Montréal. Enfin s'ajoutent à cette masse ceux dont il dit qu'ils vivent dans une situation précaire, sans réserve permettant d'affronter une perte d'emploi, une récession ou un accident personnel.

Current discussions of how words have meaning owe a great deal to the two ideas of family resemblances and paradigm cases. But the relations between these ideas have not been examined sufficiently. Some people regard the ideas as pretty much the same, or at least as complementary. Others regard them as distinct but compatible instruments for ordinary language analysis. I believe that both attitudes are probably wrong. Almost certainly, neither attitude is justified given the most common understandings of the two ideas.

In the first part of this paper I will outline a feature of Wittgenstein's later views which has not to my knowledge been much noticed. In the second part I will suggest some light that it casts on two main Wittgensteinian themes. In the third part I will offer some critical ruminations.

R. M. Messner écrivait encore en 1942 que l'homme moderne regarde le moyen age âge à peu près avec le même sentiment que l'adulte les jours de son enfance. Il entreprenait alors la tâche, qui semblait certes à beaucoup un anachronisme ou un contresens impardonnable, de comparer Duns Scot et Kant. Pour ne pas être suspect aux yeux des modernes il prenait garde de les avertir que son seul souci était de mettre les solutions du Doctor Subtilis en rapport avec les problèmes que les modernes se sont posés. Toutefois, il nous avertissait qu'il ne se laisserait pas guider par l'arrière-pensée de proposer les solutions de Duns Scot comme solutions aux problèmes que Kant avait posés mais auxquels il ne pouvait pas répondre.

A un colloque organisé par le Conseil du Bien-Étre du Québec, à l'automne 1965, M. Jacques Dofny déclarait: « la lutte contre la pauvrete» ne peut se gagner par l'argent » et, par suite, « déclarer la guerre à la pauvreteé, ce n'est pas distribuer de l'argent, même si c'est l'état qui le distribue » (Le Devoir, mercredi, 8 septembre 1965). Par contre, il y a quelques jours, M. John Fryer, du Congrés Canadien du Travail, affirmait que le pauvre « a besoin d'argent, non de sermons » (The Ottawa Citizen, mars 1966). Ces deux positions représentent sans doute, les extrêmes de l'éventail du présent débat sur la pauvrete». Mais pour s'y inscrire avec lumiére, il faut commencer par inventorier, même sommairement, les principales catégories de solutions proposécs. Je veux done premiérement examiner les disproportions entre les limites de ces solutions et l'ampleur du probléme. Je noterai les déficiences de la charité privée et organisée, de l'assistance publique, des assurances sociales et enfin de la redistribution du revenu pour faire ressortir, en deuxiéme lieu, ce qui m'apparaît être les conditions essentielles de la stratégic de la guerre à la pauvreté.

Il existe une différence fondamentale entre la science et la philosophic, différence que marque la frontière mobile entre la spéculation et la vérification (p. 2). Telle est la thèse dont tout l'ouvrage de M. Piaget veut se présenter comme la défense et l'illustration.
