I never thought that one of my sex and proclivities would be called upon to defend his virtue. Reading Mr. Henderson's article, ‘Mr. Wheatley's Virtue: A Philosophical Examination’ (Dialogue, March, 1967), convinces me otherwise.

Though Kant himself would undoubtedly have thought it a scandal that differing interpretations of his Critique of Pure Reason would continue to be given well into the twentieth century, the fact may be that it is less a scandal than a testament to the richness, depth and enduring vitality of his thought. In any case several major books on the first Critique have appeared within the last few years. D. P. Dryer's Kant's Solution for Verification in Metaphysics is one of the most substantial.

The view of linguistic philosophy presented in Waismann's book is one which has become stock in trade of some analytic philosophers. Philosophical problems are engendered by a superficial view of language. We are misled by linguistic analogies. Because a word is used in one context with one meaning, we think that it can be used in all contexts in this way (pp. 11, 60, 78, 179). Consequently, Waismann conceives philosophical activity as not answering ‘deep’ questions, but rather as clarifying the misconceptions which drive us to ask such questions.
