Cryosols from Maritime Antarctica have been less studied than soils from continental areas of Antarctica. In this work X-ray diffraction, difference X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetry, transmission electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy and selective chemical dissolution were used to characterize the clay fraction of basaltic, acid sulfate and ornithogenic Cryosols from ice-free areas of Admiralty Bay, King George Island. Non-crystalline phases are important soil components and reach >75% of the clay fraction for some ornithogenic soils. Randomly interstratified smectite-hydroxy-Al-interlayered smectite is the main clay mineral of basaltic soils. Kaolinite, chlorite and regularly interstratified illite-smectite predominate in acid sulfate soils. Jarosite is also an important component of the clay fraction in these soils. Crystalline Al and Fe phosphates occur in the clay at sites directly affected by penguin activity and the chemical characteristics of these ornithogenic sites are controlled by highly reactive, non-crystalline Al, Si, Fe and P phases. Chemical weathering is an active process in Cryosols in Maritime Antarctica and is enhanced by the presence of sulfides for some parent materials, and faunal activity.

The aim of this study was to compare the redox properties of oxides and smectite structural Fe (FeStr). Structural Fe in smectite often accounts for about half of the Fe pool in soils and sediments, and is naturally reduced by indigenous bacteria. This reaction is, however, seldom taken into account in environmental studies. The equation for the oxidation-reduction of FeStr and its application to the calculation of the standard electrode potential of FeStr, E0, are discussed on the basis of literature review. The resulting redox properties were used in a new analysis of previously reported field monitoring data. This agreed well with experimental observations that remained unexplained, and showed that if equilibrium conditions prevail, the FeStr pool in soils will reduce prior to the Fe in oxides. The FeStr pool is, therefore, likely to play a major role in controlling the bio-geochemistry of temporarily water-logged soils, and this reaction should be taken into account in further studies.

The Hançılı bentonite from Turkey shows significant changes in surface area, micro- and mesoporosity, surface acidity and acid strength with heating from 100 to 900°C for 2 h. The specific surface area (S) and specific micro-mesopore volume (V) of the original and heated samples were evaluated from N2 adsorption and desorption data, respectively, by standard methods. The adsorption of n-butylamine from the solution in cyclohexane on the samples was used to determine the total surface acidity (nm) and the adsorption equilibrium constant (K) was taken as a measure of the acid strength. S, V and nm having initial values of 98 m2g−1, 0.080 cm3g−1 and 4.8 × 10−4 mol g−1, respectively, stayed approximately constant as the temperature increased to 450°C and then decreased almost in parallel with each other, reaching their minimum or zero at 900°C. The total surface acidity, in general, declines with increasing temperature. The most acidic sites, however, increase with heating, and especially at dehydration and dehydroxylation. Acid strength reaches its maximum during the dehydroxylation phase at ∼600°C. It was concluded that the total surface acidity does not necessarily parallel the strength of the most acid sites.

Two reference halloysites from New Zealand (Te Puke and Opotiki) were studied by X-ray diffraction under (1) various levels of relative humidity (RH) from 95 to 0% (dehydration), and (2) various temperatures increasing from 25 to 120°C (dehydration). They were also studied by differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses at 40 and 0.2% RH. The impact of freeze drying along with the influence of cation saturation (Ca and K) on halloysite hydration were studied. The dehydration of the two halloysite samples upon decrease in RH started below 70% RH. However, the dehydration of Opotiki was still incomplete at ∼0% RH regardless of the saturation cation whereas Te Puke was completely dehydrated at ∼10% RH. For each sample, the decrease in RH and the increase in temperature induce similar dehydration behavior, but the dehydration processes of the Opotiki and Te Puke samples are different. The dehydration of Te Puke proceeds with one intermediate hydration state reacting as a separate phase due to the presence of ‘hole’ water molecules. The dehydration of the fully hydrated Opotiki halloysite gives a dehydrated phase and no 8.6 Å phase. The results suggest the presence of different types of water molecule, the ‘associated’ and the ‘hole’ water, controlling the dehydration behavior of halloysites. Freeze-dried halloysite samples are essentially dehydrated and the size of their coherent scattering domains is strongly reduced. Rehydration experiments performed after dehydration either at 95% RH or by immersing the sample in water for 3 months result in their partial rehydration. Calcium saturation promotes the rehydration process. The results suggest the presence of interlayer cations in the Opotiki sample, Ca ions being associated with the strongly held ‘hole’ water. As a result of this study, we assert that the (de)hydration behavior of halloysite is highly heterogeneous and cannot be generalized a priori.

This review is concerned with the synthesis and physical-chemical characteristics of a specific type of modified clay material: Ti-PILCs. The two general synthetic procedures and the main problems associated with the scale-up synthesis of these pillared materials are discussed in detail. The general characteristics of Ti-PILCs in terms of basal spacing, pillar homogeneity, surface area, microporosity, mesoporosity, pore size and distribution, thermal resistance and acidity are discussed in depth. Likewise, the most important synthesis parameters that have a clear and marked influence on the final characteristics of the materials are summarized.

This paper presents a novel concept in the thermodynamic derivation of phase diagrams for clay minerals that incorporates fuzzy transition zones. This new technique yields phase diagrams that have graded (fuzzy) zones of mineral occurrences and includes compositional variability within mineral groups. For the construction of these diagrams, 170 minerals belonging to nine different subgroups were used, based on a fuzzy mathematical description of their ‘grades’ or ‘belonging-ness’. Standard free energies of formation of all the minerals were derived and all possible pairs of mineral equilibria were evaluated. Relative intensities of mineral occurrences were determined and membership values of each type of mineral at various zones in a 2D or 3D space were graphically represented. Computations and graphical representations were carried out using programs developed in Mathematica. Diagrams were derived for 25°C, 1 bar with a solution phase containing Si(OH)4, K+, Na+, H+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ under conditions of gibbsite, goethite and ferrous oxide saturation. The resulting diagrams, unlike conventional phase diagrams, show multimineral assemblages, with varying occurrences of different minerals and provide a realistic representation of clay mineral occurrences formed by surface geochemical processes. They show that on the Earth’s surface, only montmorillonite can almost completely predominate the inorganic phase followed by kaolinite, illite and beidellite. Nontronite, glauconite, celadonite and vermiculite would not be neoformed in substantial amounts. A general conformity of derived phase equilibria with experimentally observed equilibria is also observed.

Specific surface area measurements of The Clay Minerals Society source clays were made by the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) method of adsorption of nitrogen gas. Two replicate measurements of specific surface area were performed for each source clay. All pair values were within 3%, which is very good agreement for this type of measurement.

Well ordered kaolinite was isostatically and uniaxially pressurized up to 13,200 kg/cm2 for 10 min in dry conditions and the effects of pressure on kaolinite order were determined by analyzing the shapes of two-dimensional diffraction bands on X-ray powder diffraction patterns. Increased pressure decreased the percentage of low-defect kaolinite phase, and isostatic pressure proved to be more effective than uniaxial pressure in increasing disorder, e.g. the degree of disorder resulting from 2000 kg/cm2 isostatic pressure was equivalent to that caused by a 3200 kg/cm2 uniaxial pressure. Also, the effect of high pressure was similar to that obtained with lower pressures applied several times (e.g. the effect of applying 8500 kg/cm2 pressure for 10 min was comparable to using 3200 kg/cm2 pressure five times).

In addition, six kaolinites of different structural order were isostatically pressurized up to 4000 kg/cm2 for 10 min, both in dry and wet (water) conditions. Under dry conditions, changes in structurally ordered kaolinite were comparable to those cited above whereas kaolinite pressurized in wet conditions showed a moderate improvement in structural order.

These results may contribute to our understanding of kaolinite behavior during burial diagenesis and low-grade metamorphism. In addition, these results can also be used in industry to improve kaolin technological properties that depend on kaolinite structural order by application of appropriate industrial pressure processes.

Details of the quantitative techniques successfully applied to artificial rock mixtures distributed for the third Clay Minerals Society Reynolds Cup (RC) contest are presented. Participants each received three samples, two containing 17 minerals each and a third containing ten minerals. The true composition of the samples was unknown to all participants during the contest period. The results submitted were ranked by summing the deviations from the actual compositions (bias). The top three finishers used mainly X-ray diffraction (XRD) for identification and quantification. The winner obtained an average bias of 11.3% per sample by using an internal standard and modified single-line reference intensity ratio (RIR) method based on pure mineral standards. Full-pattern fitting by genetic algorithm was used to measure the integrated intensity of the diagnostic single-line reflections chosen for quantification. Elemental-composition optimization was used separately to constrain phase concentrations that were uncertain because the reference mineral standards were lacking or not ideal. Cation exchange capacity, oriented-sample XRD analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis were also used as supplementary techniques. The second-place finisher obtained an average bias of 13.9%, also by using an RIR method, but without an added internal standard and with intensity measured by whole-pattern fitting. The third-place finisher, who obtained an average bias of 15.3%, used the Rietveld method for quantification and identification of minor phases (using difference plots). This participant also used scanning electron microscopy (with X-ray microanalysis) to identify minor components and verify the composition of structures used in Rietveld analysis. As in the previous contests, successful quantification appears to be more dependent on analyst experience than on the analytical technique or software used.

Basic Al chloride, sulfate and nitrate were prepared by hydrolysis of Al chloride followed by precipitation with a Na sulfate solution, then re-dissolution in a Ba nitrate solution. The three laboratory-synthesized oligomers and solid, commercial chlorhydrol were characterized by X-ray diffraction, 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersion spectroscopy analysis. The results showed that basic Al chloride contained unknown crystalline Keggin species. In commercial chlorhydrol, Al13 species were present in small amounts aside from the monomeric species. Basic Al nitrate or sulfate contained exclusively Al13 species. Pillaring a raw montmorillonite with different Al complexes in very concentrated media using both the clay and the oligomer in the solid state led to different pillared structures. Characterization by transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption, and thermogravimetric analysis of the materials obtained shows that pillaring with sulfate or chloride oligomers gave very heterogeneous pillared clays. Although basic Al nitrate and commercial chlorhydrol give better ordered and well organized pillared clays, the stacking obtained with chlorhydrol is greater.

Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 reduces Fe(III) within two illites which have different properties: the Fithian bulk fraction and the <0.2 µm fraction of Muloorina. The Fithian illite contained 4.6% (w/w) total Fe, 81% of which was Fe(III). It was dominated by illite with some jarosite (∼32% of the total Fe(III)) and goethite (11% of the total Fe(III)). The Muloorina illite was pure and contained 9.2% Fe, 93% of which was Fe(III). Illite suspensions were buffered at pH 7 and were inoculated with CN32 cells with lactate as the electron donor. Select treatments included anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) as an electron shuttle. Bioproduction of Fe(II) was determined by ferrozine analysis. The unreduced and bioreduced solids were characterized by Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The extent of Fe(III) reduction in the bulk Fithian illite was enhanced by the presence of AQDS (73%) with complete reduction of jarosite and goethite and partial reduction of illite. Mössbauer spectroscopy and chemical extraction determined that 21–25% of illite-associated Fe(III) was bioreduced. The extent of bioreduction was less in the absence of AQDS (63%) and only jarosite was completely reduced with partial reduction of goethite and illite. The XRD and TEM data revealed no significant illite dissolution or biogenic minerals, suggesting that illite was reduced in the solid state and biogenic Fe(II) from jarosite and goethite was either released to aqueous solution or adsorbed onto residual solid surfaces. In contrast, only 1% of the structural Fe(III) in Muloorina illite was bioreduced. The difference in the extent and rate of bioreduction between the two illites was probably due to the difference in layer charge and the total structural Fe content between the Fithian illite (0.56 per formula) and Muloorina illite (0.87). There may be other factors contributing to the observed differences, such as expandability, surface area and the arrangements of Fe in the octahedral sheets. The results of this study have important implications for predicting microbe-induced physical and chemical changes of clay minerals in soils and sediments.

Cobalt (II) and Al (III) layered double hydroxides were precipitated from homogeneous solutions using urea hydrolysis under hydrothermal conditions. The particle sizes were controlled successfully by changing the reaction temperature and period. It was found that larger particles formed by reactions at lower temperatures over longer reaction periods because the slow urea hydrolysis at lower temperatures suppresses the formation of nuclei in the solution. When the reaction was conducted at 60°C for 100 days, particles >40 µm wide were obtained.

Porous carbons rich in mesopores and with large pore volumes have been prepared by polymerization and carbonization of a carbon precursor, sucrose, within a matrix of the natural clay, halloysite. The carbon precursor was impregnated into the pores of halloysite and mostly deposited on the external surface of the halloysite rods during impregnation. The inorganic matrix was removed by washing the carbon-mineral composite with HF and HCl. The resultant carbons were characterized by nitrogen adsorption analysis and were found to possess a large specific surface area, a large total pore volume and significant mesoporosity, without an activation process being involved. The pore volume and mesoporosity were up to 1.86 cm3/g and 78%, respectively, even at low carbonization temperatures (500°C). The size of the mesopores of the resultant carbons is mainly between 3 and 30 nm and the dominant pore size is ∼3.7 nm. The carbonization temperature has significant effects on the pore-size distribution and structure of the resultant carbons and carbon-mineral composites, respectively. This process is relatively simple and expected to cost less than the high-temperature carbonization process in the preparation of mesoporous carbons with total pore volume and large specific surface areas.

Dacitic lava recovered from the immediate subsurface of the submarine PACMANUS hydrothermal vent field exhibits variable degrees of hydrothermal alteration resulting from the interaction of the glassy volcanic rocks with mineralizing hydrothermal fluids at relatively low temperatures. Transmission electron microscopic (TEM) investigations revealed that the felsic volcanic glass transformed to nm-thick smectitic flakes of the montmorillonite-beidellite series via a dissolution and reprecipitation mechanism. The process of smectite formation did not proceed through X-ray amorphous or poorly crystalline transitional phases. Alteration of the glass was found to be most pronounced adjacent to perlitic cracks and vesicles that form an interconnected network focusing fluid flow. Glass dissolution adjacent to these fluid pathways resulted in a characteristic alteration texture at the nm scale; the intensely altered groundmass contains round cavities that are partially coated or filled by smectitic flakes. The Mg content of the smectite broadly increases towards the fluid pathways. Smectitic flakes with compositions corresponding to saponite occur in the intensely altered groundmass adjacent to perlitic cracks. In addition, anatase, apatite and rare kaolinite were formed during the alteration of the volcanic glass. Primary minerals including plagioclase show only minor textural evidence of alteration. However, some primary plagioclase laths show X-ray amorphous rims depleted in Na, Ca and Al. The TEM investigations of the dacitic lava samples from the PACMANUS vent field demonstrate that volcanic glass has a higher susceptibility to hydrothermal alteration at low temperatures than most associated primary phases. The findings of the study suggest that the interaction between the volcanic rock and the hydrothermal fluids proceeded under open-system conditions leading to a mobilization of alkali elements and a redistribution of Ti at the nm scale. The Mg required for the formation of trioctahedral smectite was supplied by the hydrothermal fluids.

A reference sample of sepiolite and products of its comminution by vibrating dry-milling have been studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) line-broadening analysis, complementary field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images and surface area measurements. The apparent crystallite sizes determined via XRD are in agreement with observations on FESEM images. The sepiolite aggregates consist of lath-shaped agglutinations of prisms and pinacoids elongated along [001], each lath including several crystallites in that direction. The surface area magnitudes are in the range of previous experimental measurements of other sepiolites. The results obtained show the effectiveness of vibro-milling as the procedure to use for the comminution of sepiolite.

Boiling glauconite from the El-Gideda area of Egypt in different concentrations of HCl and H2SO4 for different periods led to a modified structure. Treatment resulted in progressive destruction of the structure, leaving X-ray amorphous silica and only relics of the original mineral. The glauconitic material was modified structurally in order to increase its adsorption activity. The glauconite was evaluated in terms of mineralogy, chemistry, morphology, structural modification, octahedral cation leaching rate, surface area and cation exchange capacity using X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy and surface area analysis. The ratio of extracted octahedral cations to the total octahedral cations in the untreated glauconite was taken as a measure of octahedral sheet decomposition. A progressive decrease in crystallinity and the formation of X-ray amorphous silica Si-O vibration bands at 1100, 800 and 494 cm−1 accompanied octahedral cation depletion. Acid activation using 2 M and 4 M HCl for 6 h destroyed 30% and 61% of the octahedral sheet, respectively. In contrast, similar treatment using 2.9 and 5.5 M H2SO4 destroyed 48% and 93% of the octahedral sheet, respectively. Depending on the extent of cation depletion, the 4 M HCl product surface areas were as high as 259 m2/g, whereas the surface area of the 5.5 M H2SO4 product was only 63 m2/g. The progressive increase in surface area was due to glauconite morphology alteration. Acid-induced dissolution of Al, Fe, Mg cations from octahedral sheet edges led to a wedge-like splitting of the glauconite crystals, mesopore creation, and greater access to interlayer galleries.

The structures of one synthetic and two natural chlorites of the chlinochlore type were explored using X-ray diffraction, magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Rietveld refinements indicated that all structures are of the trioctahedral ordered IIb polytype. Mössbauer spectra provided the ratio IIFe/IIIFe but gave no evidence for the presence of IIIFe in the brucite-like sheet. We also report unit-cell parameters, Mössbauer isomeric shifts, Si NMR chemical shifts as well as 27Al isotropic shifts and quadrupolar coupling parameters. Very broad 29Si NMR peaks from the natural samples prevented us from obtaining accurate information on the Si-Al ordering in the tetrahedral sheets; the limitations of 29Si NMR as applied to natural chlorites are discussed. High-resolution 3QMAS NMR resolved the 27Al signal of the M4 octahedral site in the brucite-like sheet from the other three Al signals of crystallographically inequivalent octahedral positions.

Dioctahedral smectite was prepared hydrothermally from dickite [Al2Si2O5(OH)4] as a starting material by autoclaving in a closed stainless steel vessel with variable temperature, pressure, time and pH conditions. Highly crystalline smectite can be obtained at 290°C under a pressure of 69 bar for 48 h. The pH of the solution was an important factor and should be maintained at 10 to 11 for the successful formation of smectite. Characterization by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal analysis and the Greene-Kelly test showed that the smectite synthesized was Na-beidellite, mostly because of the heat treatment of the starting material and the stoichiometric batch composition.

The Bracarense ceramics are characterized by a fine, pale yellow paste covered with a brownish yellow slip. The name is derived from Bracara Augusta, the Roman town located in the north of Portugal, where this type of ceramic paste was first found and identified. Various forms with the same type of paste occur, such as imitations of sigillata, terra sigillata and thin walls from the Augustus-Tiberius period, and common ware. Later, similar ceramics were also found in other archeological sites, e.g. Aquis Querquennis (Galiza, Spain), which question the location of the production center of this type of ceramic paste.

Mineralogical and chemical analyses showed that the majority of the Bracarense shards studied differ from the common ware of the Braga region. Despite minor differences, the Bracarense shards collected in Aquis Querquennis have the same geochemical pattern as those found in Bracara Augusta, i.e. they appear to have been manufactured with the same clay type. The firing products found indicate a kaolin character of the source clay, and point to firing temperatures near 900°C. The Aquis Querquennis shards have greater Br contents, which can be explained by use-wear and/or post-depositional processes, as this site is located in a thermal-water region.
