In soil environments, the surfaces of clay minerals are often coated with hydrolytic products of Al. However, limited information is available on the effect of hydroxyaluminum coatings on the interlayering of enzymes for montmorillonite. The objective of this study was to compare the adsorption of tyrosinase onto montmorillonite as influenced by levels of hydroxyaluminum coatings. Tyrosinase is one of the strongest catalysts in the transformation of phenolic compounds. Adsorption of tyrosinase onto Ca-montmorillonite (Ca-Mte) and different hydroxyaluminum-montmorillomte complexes (Al(OH)x-Mte), containing 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0 mmol coated Al/g clay, was studied both in the absence and in the presence of a phosphate buffer at pH 6.5 and 25°C. Except for Ca-Mte in the absence of phosphate where the adsorption isotherm was of C type (linear), the adsorption isotherms were of L type (Langmuir). More tyrosinase molecules were adsorbed onto Ca-Mte than onto the Al(OH)x-Mte complexes, both in the absence and in the presence of phosphate. This indicated the easy accessibility of the enzyme to the uncoated Ca-Mte surfaces. The presence of phosphate did not significantly affect the amount of tyrosinase adsorbed onto Ca-Mte, but substantially reduced the adsorption of tyrosinase onto Al(OH)x-Mte complexes. The higher the level of hydroxyaluminum coatings, the lower the amount of tyrosinase was adsorbed. Because of their affinity to the aluminous surfaces, phosphate ions evidently competed strongly with tyrosinase for Al(OH)x-Mte complexes adsorption sites. The intercalation of tyrosinase by Ca-Mte was indicated by the increased d-spacing of the complex as the amount of the enzyme adsorbed increased. The infrared spectra of tyrosinase-Ca-Mte complex showed that the amide II band of tyrosinase at 1540 cm-1 was practically unaffected by adsorption. The amide I band at 1654 cm-1 was shifted toward a higher frequency, indicating a slight perturbation in the protein conformation. This perturbation became more noticeable in the presence of Al(OH)x-Mte complexes. The data indicated that hydroxyaluminum coatings play an important role in retarding the adsorption of tyrosinase by montmorillonite, and phosphate effectively competes with tyrosinase for the adsorption sites on Al(OH)x-Mte complexes.

In order to provide a theoretical foundation for the utilization of tailings as supplementary cementitious materials, the pozzolanic activity of muscovite—a typical mineral phase in tailings—before and after mechanical activation was investigated. In this study, significant pozzolanic activity of muscovite was obtained as a result of the structural and morphological changes that were induced by mechanical activation. The activated muscovite that was obtained after mechanical activation for 160 min satisfies the requirements for use as an active supplementary cementitious material, and the main characteristics of the pozzolana were as follows: median particle size (D50) of 11.7 μm, BET specific surface area of 28.82 m2 g−1, relative crystallinity of 14.99%, and pozzolanic activity index of 94.36%. Continuous grinding led to a gradual reduction in the relative crystallinity and an increase in the pozzolanic activity index due to the dehydroxylation reaction induced by mechanical activation, which occurred despite the fact that the specific surface area showed a decreasing trend when the grinding time was prolonged. Mechanically activated muscovite exhibited the capacity to react with calcium hydroxide to form calcium silicate hydrate, which is a typical characteristic of pozzolana. This experimental study provided a theoretical basis for evaluating the pozzolanic activity of muscovite using mechanical activation.

The adsorption of hydroxy-Al by the 2–0·2 μ size fractions of muscovite, biotite, K-depleted micas, vermiculite and montmorillonite was studied. The differences in the amounts of hydroxy-Al adsorbed were apparently related to the expansibility and layer charge of minerals, the ionic saturation and degree of K-depletion, the basicity (OH/Al ratio) of the equilibrating hydroxy-Al solution, and the solution-clay ratio. The CEC reduction was not necessarily proportional to the amount of Al adsorbed because CEC reduction may occur through occupation of cation exchange sites by hydroxy-Al, or through hindrance to the entry of the replacing cation to these sites. Aluminum interlayering generally increases the K/Ca cation exchange selectivity (CES) of Na-vermiculite and K-depleted biotite, whereas the K/Ca CES of Na-montmorillonite was little affected. The basicity of the initial hydroxy-Al solution appeared to affect the K/Ca CES of Na-vermiculite and K-depleted biotite by controlling the amount of hydroxyl-Al adsorbed. The data indicate that in addition to the “propping effect”, hydroxy-Al interlayers may affect the K/Ca CES through the following mechanisms; (1) the “preferential occupation” of Ca adsorbing sites, and/or (2) the “retarding effect” on the entry of the more hydrated Ca ions.

The clay mineral attapulgite derives its non-swelling needle-like morphology from its three-dimensional crystal structure. The shape and size of the needles result in unique colloidal properties, especially resistance to high concentrations of electrolytes, and give high surface area, high porosity particles when thermally activated. Examples of industrial applications of attapulgite are reviewed with emphasis on how these characteristic properties function in the various end-uses.

If anilinium ions are intercalated into Llano vermiculite, the stacking order of adjacent silicate layers is increased, resulting in a relatively sharp single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern. The packing of intercalated organic members forms a superstructure and produces bonding from layer to layer which favors the stacking order. Superlattice reflections occur which, although sharp in the a*b* plane, are streaked along c*. Apparently there is little coherence between adjacent layers of ordered organic units.

A three-dimensional set of XRD reflections for a triclinic sub-cell having the following lattice parameters was measured: a = 5.326(3), b = 9.264(4), c = 14.82(5) Å, α = 90.31(7), β = 96.70(6), and γ = 89.55(5)°. In this unit cell (symmetry Cl), ditrigonal cavities in adjacent silicate layers are approximately opposite. Differential Fourier analyses and least-squares refinements showed that the principal axes of the anilinium ions, i.e., N-C(1)-C(4), are nearly perpendicular to the silicate layers. The planes of the aromatic rings, however, are about ±30° to X, neither parallel nor perpendicular to that direction, as indicated by earlier studies.

Inorganic cations and water molecules are also present in the interlayer; the former and some of the latter occupy sites near the middle of the layer. Anilinium-rich and anilinium-poor domains coexist. In the latter, the cation-water system predominates and apparently conforms to the superstructure. Although the cation-water structure could not be uniquely established from the reflections produced by the sub-cell, possible positional coordinates were obtained. From structural data for the silicate layers, no evidence was found for long-range Si/Al ordering in the tetrahedral sites.

We performed Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the interlayer structure of a uranyl-substituted smectite clay. Our clay model is a dioctahedral montmorillonite with negative charge sites in the octahedral sheet only. We simulated a wide range of interlayer water content (0 mg H2O/g clay — 260 mg H2O/g clay), but we were particularly interested in the two-layer hydrate that has been the focus of recent X-ray absorption experiments. Our simulation results for the two-layer hydrate of uranyl-montmorillonite yield a water content of 160 mg H2O/g clay and a layer spacing of 14.66 Å. Except at extremely low water content, uranyl cations are oriented nearly parallel to the surface normal in an outer-sphere complex. The first coordination shell consists of five water molecules with an average U-O distance of 2.45 Å, in good agreement with experimental data. At low water content, the cations can assume a perpendicular orientation to include surface oxygen atoms in the first coordination shell. Our molecular dynamics results show that ${\text{UO}}_2{\left({\text{H}}_2\text{O}\right)}_5^{2+}$ complexes translate within the clay pore through a jump diffusion process, and that first-shell water molecules are exchangeable and interchangeable.

Earlier interpretations of the conversion of the virgin smectite of the Ordovician Kinnekulle K-bentonites into the present mixed-layer illite/smectite imply that it took place through charge increase of the smectite with subsequent uptake and fixation of potassium. Recent analyses show that the layer charge of the smectite component of the I/S is in fact low and they suggest that neoformation of a separate illite phase took place. Pytte's kinetic model gives good agreement with the actual conversion rate for an activation energy of about 25–27 kcal/mole, depending on the adopted rate parameters, temperature history and assumed potassium source. In the Kinnekulle case the rate-controlling factor appears to have been the supply of potassium, which is concluded to have required large-scale, heat-induced groundwater convection.

The uniformity of clay films affects the transport of an anionic electroactive probe through the film. When cations other than Na+ are present in the initial swelling of the film (such as native K+ and Ca2+), or when the native clay is highly charged, internal dislocations of the film, caused by variable stacking domains, enhance the diffusive transport of Fe(CN)63− across the film. This effect is investigated using clay-modified electrodes in which the clays are of variable exchange forms (Na+, Ca2+, or K+) and variable charge. The charge on the clay is determined both by the native form of the clay and by reduction of structural Fe3+. The results suggest that swelling of clays increases in a linear fashion with CEC, at least for minimally charged clays.

The solubility of four different gibbsite preparations was measured, including two commercial hydrated aluminas produced by Alcoa, a Fisher ACS-grade Al(OH)3, and a laboratory preparation. The Alcoa samples and the laboratory-prepared sample had been studied previously by other investigators but without using a long-term acid treatment. Scanning electron microscopy showed globular surface material that was removed by a 14-day, 0.1 M HCl treatment. Solubility was determined at pH 4 from both over-and undersaturation with continuous agitation for 228 days. The acid treatment correlated with a decrease in log*Kso[*KSO = (Al3+)/(H+)3] of about 0.5 units. The mean solubility of the three acid-treated commercial gibbsite samples was log*Kso = 7.55 ± 0.055 (*Kso = 3.5 × 107). The solubility of the acid-treated laboratory preparation was log*Kso = 7.86 (*Kso = 7.2 × 107). The greater solubility of the laboratory-prepared gibbsite is attributed to a greater concentration of structural defects in the crystals.

During processing of Athabasca oil sands, the finely divided solids form an aqueous suspension, which ultimately stabilizes as a gel-like structure retaining up to 90% of the process water. This gelling phenomenon is believed to be caused by colloidal inorganic components. Kaolinite and mica are the main crystalline minerals in these colloidal solids; swelling clays are present in only trace amounts. Non-crystalline components are more concentrated in the finer fraction of the solids. Although the surfaces of the colloidal solids are virtually free of Fe, some contamination with polar organic matter is observed.

A diapiric intrusion of clays in the Carlentini Formation (Tortonian) was discovered in a quarry at S. Demetrio High (Hyblean Plateau, Sicily, Italy). Seven clay samples were analyzed by different analytical methods, including X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, to determine the composition and mechanism of formation (sedimentary vs. hydrothermal) of these clays. Ferric saponite, carbonates (calcite and traces of ankerite), quartz, pyrite, and zeolites (phillipsite and harmotome) were detected using XRD and FTIR. This mineral assemblage, dominated by Fe-rich saponite, and the abundance of light rare-earth elements (LREE), Eu, fluid-mobile elements (FME > 10 × primordial mantle: Li, Be, B, As, Sb, Pb, U, Ba, Sr, Cs), and other incompatible elements (Zr = 169 ppm, Nb = 46 ppm, Th = 11 ppm, on average) imply that S. Demetrio clays precipitated from a mixture of hot Si-rich hydrothermal fluids (350–400°C) and cold seawater. The evidence is in accord with the affinity of clays for hydrothermally modified mafic and ultramafic rocks, forming the Hyblean lower crust, based on multi-element comparisons, and on the occurrence of trace amounts of chrysotile 2Mc1 and sepiolite. The association of long-chain aliphatic-aromatic hydrocarbons (intensity ratios I2927/I2957 > 0.5) with hydrothermal clays, the lack of fossils, and the similarity of the IR absorption bands with those of organic compounds detected previously in some metasomatized Hyblean gabbroic xenoliths suggest a possible abiogenic origin of hydrocarbons via a Fischer-Tropsch-type reaction. The S. Demetrio clay diapir was emplaced at shallow crustal levels in the Late Miocene as a consequence of the interaction, at a greater depth, of an uprising basalt magma and the products of an early, serpentinite-hosted hydrothermal system.

The introduction of artificial ±b/3 stacking faults into well-crystallized kaolinite by intercalating and removing hydrazine had no observable effect on the solid-state 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum of kaolinite. Also, the introduction of such stacking faults did not alter the hydroxyl-stretching region of the infrared spectrum, implying no change in the hydrogen bonding between the displaced layers. Calculations of Si...H distances and Si-O...H angles from reported structures for kaolinite indicated that the resolution of the two Si chemical environments was due to differences in hydrogen-bonding at the surface of the silicate sheet.

Three kaolinite reference samples identified as KGa-1, KGa-1b, and KGa-2 from the Source Clays Repository of The Clay Mineral Society (CMS) are used widely in diverse fields, but the defect structures have still not been determined with certainty. To solve this problem, powder diffraction patterns of the KGa-1, KGa-1b, and KGa-2 samples were modeled. In a kaolinite layer among three symmetrically independent octahedral sites named as A, B, and C and separated from each other by b/3 along the b parameter, the A and B sites are occupied by Al cations, whereas, the C sites located along the long diagonal of the oblique kaolinite unit cell are vacant. The layer displacement vectors t1 and t2 are related by a pseudo-mirror plane from defect-free 1Tc kaolinite enantiomorphs, whereas, the random interstratification within individual kaolinite crystallites creates right-hand and left-hand layer sub-sequences producing structural disorder. A third layer displacement vector, t0, located along the long diagonal of the oblique layer unit cell that contains the vacant octahedral site and coincides with the layer pseudo-mirror plane may exist. Thus, a structural model should be defined by the probability of t1, t2, and t0 layer displacement translations Wt1, Wt2, and Wt0, respectively, determined by simulated experimental X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. X-ray diffraction patterns were calculated for structures with a given content of randomly interstratified displacement vectors, and other XRD patterns were calculated for a physical mixture of crystallites having contrasting structural order with only C-vacant layers. The samples differ from each other by the content of high- and low-ordered phases referred to as HOK and LOK. The HOK phase has an almost defect-free structure in which 97% of the layer pairs are related by just the layer displacement vector t1 and only 3% of the layer pairs form the enantiomorphic fragments. In contrast, the LOK phases in the KGa-1, KGa-1b, and KGa-2 samples differ from HOK phases by the occurrence probabilities for the t1, t2, and t0 layer displacements. In addition, the LOK phases contain stacking faults that displace adjacent layers in arbitrary lengths and directions. Low XRD profile factors (Rp = 8-11%) support the defect structure models. Additional structural defects and previously published models are discussed.

The integral thermodynamic quantities of adsorbed water on Na- and Ca-montmorillonite have been calculated from water adsorption isotherms on Na- and Ca-montmorillonite at 298° and 313°K and from one adsorption isotherm and calorimetric measurements at 298°K. The integral entropy values decrease and then increase as the amount of adsorbed water approaches zero. In both systems, the curves approach the entropy value of free liquid water at the high content water. The thermodynamics of adsorbate on a non-inert adsorbent is discussed in some detail. The two-isotherm method gives the energy change of the water phase only, whereas the colorimetric method gives the energy change of the whole system (clay, exchangeable cations, and the adsorbed water). Only when the energy changes in the solid phase are negligible (=inert surface) should the two methods give similar results. An hypothesis was developed to explain the entropy-change data of water adsorbed on clay surfaces, in which the clay surface behaves as a non-inert adsorbent.

This review is concerned with the synthesis and physical-chemical characteristics of a specific type of modified clay material: Ti-PILCs. The two general synthetic procedures and the main problems associated with the scale-up synthesis of these pillared materials are discussed in detail. The general characteristics of Ti-PILCs in terms of basal spacing, pillar homogeneity, surface area, microporosity, mesoporosity, pore size and distribution, thermal resistance and acidity are discussed in depth. Likewise, the most important synthesis parameters that have a clear and marked influence on the final characteristics of the materials are summarized.

Bulk and size-fractionated kaolinites from seven localities in Australia as well as the Clay Minerals Society Source Clays Georgia KGa-1 and KGa-2 have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser scattering, and electron microscopy in order to understand the variation of particle characteristics across a range of environments and to correlate specific particle characteristics with intercalation behavior. All kaolinites have been intercalated with N-methyl (NMF) after pretreatment with hydrazine hydrate, and the relative efficiency of intercalation has been determined using XRD. Intercalate yields of kaolinite: NMF are consistently low for bulk samples that have a high proportion of small-sized particles (i.e., <0.5 µm) and for biphased kaolinites with a high percentage (>60%) of low-defect phase. In general, particle size appears to be a more significant controlling factor than defect distribution in determining the relative yield of kaolinite: NMF intercalate.

Freshwater ferromanganese nodules (FFN) from Green Bay, Lake Michigan have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), micro X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The samples can be divided into three types: Mn-rich nodules, Fe-Mn nodules, and Fe-rich nodules. The manganese-bearing phases are todorokite, birnessite, and buserite. The iron-bearing phases are feroxyhyte, goethite, 2-line ferrihydrite, and proto-goethite (intermediate phase between feroxyhyte and goethite). The XRD patterns from nodule cross sections suggest the transformation of birnessite to todorokite. The TEM-EDS spectra show that todorokite is associated with Ba, Co, Ni, and Zn; birnessite is associated with Ca and Na; and buserite is associated with Ca. The todorokite has an average chemical formula of Ba0.28p2+(Zn0.14p+2Co0.05p3+Ni0.02p2+) (Mn4.99p4+Mn0.82p3+Fe0.12p3+Co0.05p3+Ni0.02p2+) O12·nH2O. Barium is the main cation in the structural tunnels of the todorokite. The average chemical formula of birnessite and Ca-buserite are: Na0.14p+Ca0.19p2+(Mn1.48p4+Mn0.52p3+0.52) O4·nH2O and Ca0.27p2+(Mn1.46p4+Mn0.54p3+)O4·nH2O, respectively. Most nodules have a concretionary structure of alternating Fe/Mn layers, commonly with a core of reddish feldspar containing phyllosilicates and hematite micro-crystals. Other cores consist of goethite, cristobalite, tridymite, hercynite, hematite-bearing quartz, coal, and chlorite-bearing rock fragments. The hexagonal or hexagonal-like structures of hematite micro-crystals and clay minerals in the cores may serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites for the Mn-oxides and Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides. The alternating Fe/Mn layers in FFNs might be caused by oscillatory redox condition fluctuations at the sediment-water interface due to changes in water level.

An ambiguity in interpretation of electron micrographs of replicas of fracture surfaces of dry clay samples is illustrated, and a method of making ultra-thin sections described. Micrographs of ultra-thin sections of remoulded, consolidated, and sheared kaolin specimens are shown. In unconsolidated specimens random arrangements of particles, or of small groups of particles, were found. In failure zones, in sheared samples, the preferred orientation was parallel to the zone, with, in some cases, a subsidiary zone in which particles were inclined to the main zone. Interparticle contacts were mainly edge-to-edge or face-to-face.

The oxidation state of structural iron greatly influences the physical-chemical properties of clay minerals, a phenomenon that may have significant implications for pollutant fate in the environment, for agricultural productivity, and for industrial uses of clays. Knowledge of redox mechanisms is fundamental to understanding the underlying basis for iron's effects on clays. Past studies revealed that the extent of Fe reduction varied depending on the reducing agent used, but this variation may not have been a simple function of the reduction potential of the reducing agent. The objective of this study was to identify the relationship between the Fe reduction mechanism and free radical activity in the reducing agent. Several reducing agents and their mixtures with the Na-saturated, 0.5 to 2 μm size fraction of ferruginous smectite (SWa-1) were analyzed by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to determine the presence of unpaired electrons or free radicals. Only Na2S2O4 exhibited paramagnetic free-radical behavior with a signal at about g = 2.011, which was attributed to the sulphoxylate (S02− ·) free radical. The free radical was labile in aqueous solution, and the ability of Na2S2O4 solution to reduce structural Fe in the smectite decreased with age of the solution and paralleled the disappearance of the free radical signal in the ESR spectrum. The paramagnetic species was preserved and enhanced if Na2S2O4 was added to the clay suspension, indicating that either the clay surface stabilized the SO2− · radical or the additional unpaired electrons were produced in the clay structure.

Iron-pillared clays (Fe-PILCs) were synthesized from hydrolyzed FeCl3 solutions added to NaOH solutions using different synthesis conditions. X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, chemical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal analysis, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia and temperature-programmed reduction were used to characterize the resulting Fe-pillared clays (Fe-PILCs). A higher degree of pillaring was obtained when the Fe content was adjusted to 60 mmoles of Fe/g of clay. It was observed that higher values of this ratio led to worse acidity and textural characteristics, a consequence of the probable formation of Fe oxides that could not only deposit on the surface but also block the pores formed during the pillaring process. Likewise, it was found that the amount of Fe that can be introduced depended on the OH/Fe ratios. Total surface and micropore area decreased and Fe content increased with increasing pillaring solution concentrations. Finally, all pillared samples prepared here were thermally stable at temperatures up to 400°C.
