Surface properties of reduced charge montmorillonites (RCM) whose exchange capacities were saturated with tetra-alkylammonium cations, were studied with X-ray diffraction, nitrogen, and water adsorption. Methods were utilized for preparing montmorillonite of varying charge and of swelling reduced-charge clay with ethanol. As charge reduction proceeds, all layers retain some exchangeable cations until about half the original charge is reached at which point collapsed layers begin to appear and increase to about 60 per cent at maximum charge reduction. Charge reduction thus appears to proceed in a non-homogeneous fashion. When saturating exchange sites with tetra-alkylammonium ions in ethanol solvent, intercalation of salt in uncharged layers was noted if the samples were not completely washed. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms at liquid nitrogen temperatures showed considerable interlamellar penetration of tetramethylammonium (TMA+) clays, resulting in high calculated surface areas. Much less adsorption on the tetra-n-propylammonium (TPA+) clays was observed. Surface areas were increased upon reduction of charge up to the point where collapsed layers began to be appreciable, whereupon measured areas decreased. Water adsorption isotherms reflected the hydration properties of the exchangeable cation as well as the surface available for adsorption.

For a series of mixed-layer illite-smectite (I-S) minerals from a drillhole near the Kakkonda geothermal field, one-dimensional structure analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed using Casaturated specimens in both air-dried and ethylene glycol-solvated states. The expandability characteristics of component layers were also examined by means of alkylammonium exchange and Li saturation. The K content in the illite layers was 1.5–1.7/O20(OH)4 in the I-S series from 3 to 85% of I-layer content (% I). The layer charge of the smectite layer varied slightly within the range of 0.3–0.5/O10(OH)2 by alkylammonium exchange experiments and the expandability was independent of the beidellite content within a range of 0–0.5 by the Li-saturation test. The degree of long-range ordering represented by Reichweite (R) parameters varied from R0 to R3 via R1 and R2 with increase in % I. The I-S samples contained <10% vermiculite as the third component and the vermiculite content tended to decrease with progressive illitization.

In contrast to the smectitic R0 samples (<10% I), more illitic R0 (e.g. 35% I) and >R1 I-S samples showed complicated expandability with alkylammonium exchange. The XRD patterns of dodecylammonium-exchanged I-S samples can be interpreted by random interstratification of several types of sub-units such as layer-doublets, layer-triplets and layer-quartets present in the crystallites. This interpretation is consistent with the variation in the occurrence probabilities of layer-multiplets calculated from the junction probabilities and the proportions of layers. Because the interpretation indicates that I-S is a stack of various types of the sub-units, the smectite illitization can be described by a systematic change in the type and proportion of the sub-units constituting crystallites.

Soil formation usually results in an increase in magnetic susceptibility. The magnetic properties of the products of transformation of ferrihydrite, a typical precursor of other soil Fe oxides, were examined in the present work. Synthetic 2-line ferrihydrite was aged at two temperatures (25 and 50°C) and two different relative humidities (80 and 100%) in the presence of silicate, phosphate, citrate, and tartrate as adsorbed ligands (molar anion/Fe ratio = 1–3%). The ligands delayed or prevented the transformation of ferrihydrite to hematite. The magnetic susceptibility of the ferrihydrite transformation products increased with aging, the rate of increase depending on the type of ligand added and its concentration. The largest increase in magnetic susceptibility, sixfold, was obtained with ferrihydrite in a citrate/Fe ratio of 1%, after 1500 days. The resulting magnetic products exihibited superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature and high coercivity at 5 K. The formation of an intermediate ferrimagnetic phase in the ferrihydrite-to-hematite transformation might explain the magnetic enhancement observed in many aerobic soils lacking other sources of magnetic minerals.

Lithium-bearing tosudite was found from a brittle clayey part of the Tooho “roseki” deposit, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The chemical composition of the Li bearing tosudite was estimated as SiO2 41·60%, A12O3 36·40%, Fe2O3 1·82%, MgO 0·29%, CaO 0·38%, Li2O 1·04%, Na2O 0·14%, K2O 0·38%, H2O+ 11·12% and H2O− 6·87% from the chemical composition of a specimen with associated impurities. The Li-bearing tosudite has the regularly interstratified structure of montmorillonite and dioctahedral chlorite in which Li is present in a gibbsite sheet as shown in the structural formula of interlayer cations K0·16, Na0·09, Ca0.13 + 9·60 H2O; gibbsite sheet Li1·36, Mg0·14, Fe0·45, Al3·59 (OH)12·00; silicate layer Al8·00 (Si13·60, Al2·40) O40·00 (OH)8·00. The 29·48 Å reflection series of the Li-bearing tosudite moves to 31·3 Å after ethylene glycol treatment and to 23·3 Å on heating to 500°C for 1 hr.

The resistance to acidic and sulfate attack of Portland-pozzolan cement containing 35 wt.% of zeolite was compared with that of unamended Portland cement. Mortar specimens kept in 0.5% and 1.0% HCl solution, 5% Na2SO4 solution, and in reference water for 365 and 720 days were tested using a set of physical-mechanical and chemical techniques. The ability of mortars containing zeolitic cements with 15 to 50 wt.% of zeolite to protect steel against corrosion was verified by a potentiodynamic method. Mortar with zeolitic cement performs better when exposed to 1% HCl solution due to the presence of a finer pore matrix, a hydrate phase poorer in CaO-containing hydration products with lower leachability, and the high resistance of zeolite material itself to acidic attack, compared with Portland cement and siliceous sand. The improved sulfate resistance of the mortar with zeolitic cement is caused by the decreased C3A in the cement blend in comparison with that in Portland cement, a reduction in SO3 binding into the cement paste and decreased amount of CaO-containing hydration products capable of reacting with a sulfate solution forming voluminous reaction products, and consequent crack propagation, large expansion and structural disintegration. Passivation of steel in mortars with blends of Portland cement to zeolite percentage ratios of 85/15, 75/25 and 65/35 by weight is comparable to that of Portland cement mortar. This is particularly important because the mortar with zeolitic cement exhibits late strengths similar to that of Portland cement mortar. This confirms that zeolitic cement can replace Portland cement in many applications with the advantage of higher resistance to acidic and sulfate attack.

The 16-8-, 8-5-, 5-2-, 2-1-, 1-0.5-, 0.5-0.3-, 0.3-0.1-, and <0.1-μm size fractions were centrifuged from a Georgia (U.S.A.) sedimentary kaolin and a hydrothermal kaolin from the Sasso mine (Italy) and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry (TGA) together with the corresponding whole rocks. All size fractions of the Georgia sample consisted dominantly of well-crystallized, fine-grained kaolinite, associated with minor quantities of smectite. Some halloysite-like elongate particles were noted by SEM in the intermediate size fractions, minor amounts of quartz were identified in the coarsest size fractions, and < 1% noncrystalline material and traces of organic material were suspected in the finest size fraction. The crystallinity of the kaolinite as measured by XRD and IR varied moderately with size. IR suggested that nacrite-like stacking disorder increased with decreasing size for particles < 5 μm in size.

In the Sasso sample kaolinite dominated all size fractions and was accompanied by dickite in the coarse and by halloysite in the fine size fractions. Regular mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S) was present in all size fractions and dominated in the finest. Abundant quartz and traces of alunite were identified in the whole rock and coarsest size fractions. The kaolinite in this sample showed marked variation in stacking order and crystallinity, as shown by changes in XRD, IR, and DTA patterns.

The observed compositional and structural variations in the size fractions of the Georgia sedimentary kaolin are small, as expected from formational environment, which was characterized by low temperatures and relative stable genetic conditions. The much more marked differences in composition within the size fractions of the Sasso hydrothermal kaolin are likely a result of the broad range of temperatures and fluid chemistry of its formational environment. The sequence dickite-well-crystallized kaolinite-kaolinite-halloysite is probably temperature-dependent.

A procedure based on loss of weight after selective dissolution analysis (SDA) and washing with (NH4)2CO3 was developed for estimating the noncrystalline material content of soils derived from widely different parent materials. After extracting with 0.2 N ammonium-oxalate or boiling 0.5 N NaOH solutions, samples were washed with 1 N (NH4)2CO3 to remove excess dissolution agents and to prevent sample dispersion. The amount of noncrystalline material removed from the sample by the extracting solution was estimated by weighing the leached products dried to constant weight at 110°C. The results match closely with those obtained by chemical analyses of the dissolution product and assignment of the appropriate water. The proposed weight-loss method is less time-consuming than the chemical method, and no assumptions need be made concerning sample homogeneity or water content of the noncrystalline material.

Extractions of whole soil and dispersed clay fractions indicated that noncrystalline material determinations on the clay fractions underestimated the noncrystalline material content for whole soils from 0 to 34%. Acid ammonium oxalate was found to be a much more selective extractant for noncrystalline materials than NaOH.

Weathering products formed on the surface of K-feldspar in Yakushima Island, Japan were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XRD confirmed that the weathering products were composed mainly of gibbsite and halloysite. SEM, TEM and EDX clearly showed formation of amorphous aluminum hydroxide exhibiting 2 distinct habits: 1) curled fibrous or circular forms less than 0.02 μm in diameter; and 2) a spherical habit less than 1.0 μm in diameter. The fibrous aluminum hydroxide exhibited curled fibrous forms or circular forms less than 0.02 μm in diameter and gave a diffuse electron diffraction halo. EDX indicated that the material consisted mainly of Al and very small amounts of Si and Fe. The spherical aluminum hydroxide also gave similar EDX and electron diffraction characteristics to the fibrous material. These fibrous and spherical aluminum hydroxides must be formed as a metastable phase in the earliest weathering stages, and transformed into a stable phase of gibbsite and halloysite as the reaction proceeded.

Pillared structures with an interlayer opening of ∼0.3 nm were obtained after successive heat treatments of the PILC precursor in reducing and oxidizing conditions. This precursor was prepared by reacting a Na+-montmorillonite with an intercalant containing Al and Fe oxo-hydroxides (Al/Fe = 1). Powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, catalytic activity measurements and surface area data were used to characterize the samples. On the basis of Mössbauer spectra taken at temperatures between 4.2 and 300 K, it is deduced that oxidizing steps produce Al substituted maghemite which converts into Al substituted magnetite upon reducing heat treatment. Firing the precursor in oxidizing atmosphere forms pillars of few nm in diameter. However, heating under reducing conditions yields pillars of smaller diameter. This later behaviour is maintained even after reheating the material in oxidizing atmosphere. From the temperature dependence of Mössbauer spectra it is deduced that the diameter of the Fe oxide particles in the pillars is smaller than 10 nm.

Interactions with bentonite are important in the chemical speciation and fate of heavy metals in soils and other ecosystems. The interactions of Zn with bentonite were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), dehydration, kinetic and sequential extraction procedures. The species and activity of Zn retained by bentonite were affected markedly by pH. The Zn(OH)+ was retained by bentonite prepared at pH ≥ 6.9. The extent of dehydration of Zn(OH)+-bentonite was higher than that for Zn-bentonite. At a relative humidity of 55.5%, the basal spacing of the Zn(OH)+-bentonite was from 1.21 to 1.26 nm with 1 water sheet and that of the Zn-bentonite was 1.51 nm with 2 water sheets. The greater affinity of Zn(OH)+ for bentonite than Zn was associated with a lower degree of hydration. When an aqueous suspension of Ca-bentonite was incubated with soluble Zn, the concentration of Zn retained by the Ca-bentonite was linearly related to the square root of time. The rate of the interaction was controlled probably by the interlayer diffusion and subsequently by the diffusion into the ditrigonal cavities in bentonite. The Zn retained by bentonite was dehydrated in situ so as to increase the bonding of Zn with surfaces of bentonite. With hydrothermal treatment the retained Zn could diffuse easily into the cavities and transform increasingly to the residual forms that are associated with the entrapped form.

Samples of cuttings from the Borchard A-2 well, Imperial Valley, California, were collected over a measured borehole temperature interval 135° to 275°C. The <0.5-µm (e.s.d.) fraction was separated using high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) to create a nonmagnetic fraction rich in illite and a magnetic fraction rich in chlorite. Chlorite was less easily separated from illite in lower temperature samples (<200°C), presumably due to the presence of polymineralic grains of chlorite and illite. Grains in higher temperature samples were more nearly monomineralic and more easily separated.

The chlorite is the IIb polytype. The thickness of coherent scattering domains of chlorite increased until 220°C and then remained constant. The amount of 7-Å interstratified material increased downhole until 195°C and then decreased. Over the same temperature interval, the illite polytypes varied systematically from 1Md (135° to 175°C) to 1M + 2M1 (230° to 275°C) and coherent scattering domains in the mineral became thicker to about 200°C and then remained constant in thickness. The percentage of illite in mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S) increased from 40% at 135°C to 100% at temperature >205°C; ordering in the I/S changes from R0 to R1 between 135° and 155°C, and from R1 to R ≥ 3 at temperatures >155°C.

The concurrent structural changes in chlorite and illite indicate a general improvement in the overall structural order of the clay minerals with increasing temperature. Differences between chlorite and illite suggest that the minerals may have reacted differently to changing conditions or that they may have formed by different mechanisms. The exclusive occurrence of IIb chlorite at temperatures as low as 135°C extends the limit of IIb chlorite stability to temperatures lower than previous estimates.

Stevensite-like sauconite, with the general composition: ${\text{Si}}_4\left({\text{Zn}}_{3-x}{\square }_x\right){\text{O}}_{10}{\left(\text{OH}\right)}_2{R}_{2x}^{+}$\$\end{document}, where □ is a vacant site, was synthesized. The objective was to study the possible migration of some cations (Li+ and Zn2+) within such trioctahedral smectites, under heating, following the so-called ‘Hofmann-Klemen’ (HK) effect. The initial gel was divided into five aliquots and placed in teflon-coated hydrothermal reactors with distilled water, and these were hydrothermally treated at 80, 100, 120, 150, and 200°C, respectively, over 30 days. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that the samples synthesized were smectites. The number of vacant sites (x) per half unit cell (O10(OH)2) ranged from nearly 0 to 0.23 but no simple relationship was established between x and the temperature of synthesis. The samples were Li+- and Zn2+-saturated, and heated overnight at 300°C (HK treatment). Cation exchange capacity measurements were made by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) on ${\text{NH}}_4^{+}$\$\end{document}-saturated samples. After LiHK treatment, the structural formula of samples could be expressed as: ${\text{Si}}_4{\text{Zn}}_{\left(3-x\right)}{\text{Li}}_x{\text{O}}_{10}{\left(\text{OH}\right)}_2{\text{NH}}_{4x}^{+}$\$\end{document}, while after ZnHK treatment, it could be expressed as: Si4Zn3O10(OH)2. Analysis by XRD and FTIR showed that the samples moved from a Zn-stevensite-like structure to Zn-talc-like structure after treatment with ZnHK. These results are interpreted asevidence that Zn2+ (and Li+) migrated into the previously vacant sites under HK treatment.

Phyllosilicates are major components of the <2-μm fraction (1–3 wt. % of most bulk specimens) in more than 50 samples of air-fall tephra from several 1980 eruptions of Mount St. Helens. In all samples, trioctahedral smectite is the major clay mineral. The integral series of 00ℓ reflections in ethylene glycol-treated samples indicates a lack of interstratification; absence of a peak near 5 Å after heat treatment, the 060 peak at 1.54 Å, and energy dispersive chemical analyses indicate that the smectite is a Mg- and Fe- rich, trioctahedral saponite. Minor mica and chlorite are present in the <2-μm fraction of most samples, and some samples show a peak near 12 Å after heating to 550°C which is probably due to the presence of an interstratifled chlorite/collapsed smectite or chlorite/collapsed vermiculite. The tephra contains glass and crystals originating from new magma and lithic fragments incorporated from the pre-existing cone. The clay minerals in the tephra are lithic components stripped from older, hydrothermally altered rocks during explosive ejection. Cleaned pumice fragments, which are new magmatic components, lack smectite, but contain rare biotite in xenoliths. Old, hydrothermally altered rocks from the volcano's summit and from the debris-avalanche (former north flank) contain saponite together with chlorite and chlorite/smectite which may have formed from it. Saponite and zeolites that precipitated from neutral to alkaline hydrothermal solutions line cavities in some of these rocks. The saponite was probably not subjected to magmatic temperatures because heating this material for 5 min at 750°C collapses it irreversibly to 10 Å. Kaolinite, alunite, and opal, indicative of acid-sulfate alteration, were found only in the pre-1980 summit crater and the southwest thermal area, but were not evident in the lithic components of the 1980 deposits.

Hydroxy-interlayered vermiculite (HIV) is a ubiquitous phyllosilicate in the <0.05-mm fraction of sandy soils on the U.S. southeastern coastal plain. Extensive areas of soils with abundant HIV (i.e., peninsular Florida) have no detectable mica; yet the coarseness, platy habit, and nonexchangeable K associated with HIV grains suggest a mica precursor. The objectives of this study were: (1) to probe for mica zones (1.0-nm) within HIV grains, using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and (2) to determine intragrain elemental distributions via electron microprobe analysis (EMA). HIV grains from a Quartzipsamment medium-silt fraction, which contained no detectable mica by X-ray diffraction (XRD), were concentrated via high-density liquid separation. EMA transects and X-ray dot maps showed zonation or trends of K depletion near edges of some grains, with K2O contents ranging from trace levels to >40 g kg-1. Elemental oxide data indicated a dioctahedral phyllosilicate structure, with some octahedral substitution of Fe and Mg for Al. Intermittent 1.0-nm lattice-fringe images obtained by HRTEM supported the presence of mica zones within grains. There were no detectable 1.4-nm fringes, despite the dominance of a 1.4-nm XRD peak, indicating the instability of the HIV specimen under the electron beam. Results support a transformational link between mica and HIV in these soils. Rapid incursion and polymerization of Al following loss of K from mica may limit the extent of the vermiculite intermediate. The latter idea is consistent with the paucity of vermiculite in Florida soils. Traces of occluded mica may be the last remnants of the precursor grain. A sand-sized mica precursor would likely have weathered in place during the period when colloidal components such as kaolinite illuviated to deeper zones. Thus, the transformation product (HIV) would comprise a significant proportion of the <0.05-mm fraction persisting in sandy eluvial horizons.

The fine clay (<0.1 μm) fraction of a clayey soil (Vertisol) from Sardinia (Italy) was studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and surface area measurements. Smectites were the dominant clay minerals both in the parent material and the soil horizons. The magnitude and location of the smectites’ layer-charges were analyzed using the Hofmann & Kiemen effect (suppression of the octahedral charge following lithium-saturation and heating). The amount of montmorillonite layers was evaluated by measuring the reduction of total surface area and CEC after suppression of octahedral charges and subsequent collapse of montmorillonite interlayers. Reduction of total surface area and CEC after fixation of K and irreversible collapse of interlayers were used to quantify high-charge layers before and after the suppression of octahedral charges. This allowed us to evaluate the amount of tetrahedral high-charge layers. The smectites in the parent material were montmorillonitic-beidellitic mixed layers and exhibited a small proportion of high-charge layers; in particular, layers with a high tetrahedral charge were a very minor component. In the upper soil horizons, the amount of montmorillonitic layers decreased whereas the amount of smectite layers with a high tetrahedral charge increased. FTIR spectroscopy indicated more Fe for Al substitution in the smectites of the soil horizons than in the smectites of the parent material. The results suggested that octahedral charged smectite layers (montmorillonitic) were altered, whereas high-charge beidellitic layers were formed in this soil environment characterized by rather high pH (>8.0).

Cation-exchange equilibrium for Ca-K-montmorillonite was studied at 35°, 50°, and 90°C and at three total normalities of the equilibrium solution (0.1, 0.05, and 0.01 N). Changes of the standard free energy for the exchange from K-montmorillonite to Ca-montmorillonite were determined to be −53, −270, and −393 cal/eq at 35°, 50°, and 90°C, respectively. Changes of the standard enthalpy and entropy were 1.7 kcal/eq and 5.6 cal/eq/degree at 35°C, respectively. The sign of the change of the standard free energy was found to be determined mainly by the entropy change, in particular, by the hydration entropy of the cations.

The calculation of the excess functions indicates that the mixing model of Ca-K-montmorillonite approximates that of a regular solution. Montmorillonite having potassium equivalent ion fraction of 0.1 to 0.7 consists of a random interstratification of Ca-montmorillonite (15.6 Å) and K-montmorillonite (12.6 Å).

Water inhibits sorption of uncharged organic compounds on montmorillonites saturated with small alkylammonium cations such as tetramethylammonium (TMA) and trimethylphenylammonium (TMPA). As a first step toward understanding the mechanism by which water inhibits arene sorption on TMA- and TMPA-montmorillonites, infrared spectroscopy and water sorption isotherm experiments were conducted to determine whether water preferentially hydrates adsorbed TMA and TMPA cations rather than the siloxane surface. Infrared spectra of normal-charge and reduced-charge TMA- and TMPA-montmorillonites were obtained at partial water vapor pressures from 0.075 to 0.92 to determine if water vapor hydrates the adsorbed cations. Water adsorbed at partial pressures from 0 to about 0.2 caused the wave-number position of the HOH deformation vibration of adsorbed water to shift 4 to 10 cm-1 to higher wavenumber and the methyl deformation vibrations of adsorbed TMA and TMPA cations to shift 1 to 2 cm-1 to higher wavenumber, providing evidence that water interacts directly with adsorbed TMA and TMPA ions. There were no shifts in the ring stretching or C-H out-of-plane vibrations of TMPA, which indicates that water interacts with the methyl groups of TMPA, not with TMPA's aromatic ring. Water vapor sorption isotherms showed that normal-charge montmorillonites adsorb more water than do reduced-charge montmorillonites, consistent with the higher concentration of adsorbed cations on normal-charge clay. More water was adsorbed by TMA-montmorillonite than by TMPA-montmorillonite, consistent with the higher hydration energy of TMA. Thus, both the infrared and sorption isotherm results show that water preferentially hydrates adsorbed TMA and TMPA, not the siloxane surface of montmorillonite.

Long-range ordering of tetrahedral cations in micas is favored by phengitic compositions, by the 3T stacking sequence of layers, and by tetrahedral Si:Al ratios near 1:1. Phengites of the 1M, 2M1, and 2M2 polytypes are said to show partial ordering of tetrahedral cations, although the amounts of tetrahedral substitutions are small and the accuracies of determination are not as large as desired. The 3T structures of muscovite, paragonite, lepidolite, and protolithionite show tetrahedral ordering, as do the 2M1 brittle micas margarite and an intermediate between margarite and bityite. Muscovite-3T and margarite-2M1 are also slightly phengitic relative to their ideal compositions. Examples of octahedral cation ordering in micas are more abundant and are to be expected when cations of different size and charge are present. Octahedron M(1) with its OH,F groups in the trans orientation tends to be larger than the mean of the two cis octahedra as a result of the ordering of cations and vacancies. In some samples ordering has reduced the true symmetry to a subgroup of that of the ideal space group. If ordering in subgroup symmetry results in ordered patterns of different geometries but similar energies in very small domains, the average over all unit cells may simulate long-range disorder.

The oxidation of 1,2- and 1,4-dihydroxybenzenes (1,2-DHB and 1,4-DHB) by unbuffered aerated suspensions of synthetic bimessite was studied by continuously monitoring the H+, Mn2+, dissolved O2, and organic radical concentration of the aqueous phase during the reaction. The reaction rapidly generated a very high pH, attributed to oxide dissolution, and the alkaline conditions prevented Mn2+ release into solution over the entire reaction period. Semiquinone radical anions accumulated early in the reaction and then diminished. A secondary radical product appeared in solution during the reaction of the oxide with 1,2-DHB, and was tentatively identified as an hydroxylated semiquinone. The oxide/DHB ratio controlled the maximum concentration and persistence of these radicals in solution as well as the degree to which O2 was consumed as an electron donor. In general, low oxide/DHB ratios promoted O2 uptake by the system, consistent with the subordinate role of O2 as a competing electron acceptor in the presence of excess Mn oxide. Soluble phosphate suppressed O2 consumption, but the mechanism by which it interacted with the reaction system was not determined.
