In this paper we have shown that the existence of some balanced incomplete block (b.i.b. for abbreviation) designs implies the existence of some others in some cases. We have here established the following theorems.

The classical Hermite-Fejér interpolation process is a positive linear mapping from C[-1, 1] into the space of polynomials of degree ≤2n-1. The middle graph of a graph G=( V, E) is the graph M(G) = (V∪E, E′), in which two vertices u, v are adjacent if either M is a vertex in V and v is an edge in E containing u, or u and v are edges in E having a vertex in common. Middle graphs have been characterized in terms of line graphs by Hamada and Yoshimura [7], who also investigated their traversability and connectivity properties. In this paper another characterization of middle graphs is presented, in which they are viewed as a class of intersection (representative) graphs of hereditary hypergraphs. Graph theoretic parameters associated with the concepts of vertex independence, dominance, and irredundance for middle graphs are discussed, and equalities relating the chromatic number of a graph to these parameters are obtained.

The purpose of this note is to continue the author's study of the automorphisms of certain factors of type II1 Namely, those factors arising from the left regular representation of a free nonabelian group. Our main result shows that the outer conjugacy classes of automorphisms of such a factor are not countably separated. This had previously been shown only when the number of free generators was assumed to be infinite.

In this note, we continue the investigations of [3], proving another analogue of the maximum modulus theorem, this time for the sequence space bv, and we investigate maximal functions for such theorems. As in [3], we use the notation f∈MM if f is analytic in the disk |z| <1, continuous for |z| ≤ 1 and satisfies |f(z)| ≤ 1 on |z| = 1. We also write f∈SL if f∈MM and f(0) = 0. Whenever x={xk} is a sequence of complex numbers, we write f(x) = {f(xk)}.

In [3], we proved analogues of the maximum modulus theorem for the sequence spaces 5, m and c, and analogues of the Schwarz Lemma for the sequence spaces c0, lp and bv0. We begin this note with the sequence space bv.

The purpose of this note is to give an elementary geometric proof of the following result stated by Sullivan (see (4)).

Theorem 1 (Sullivan). Let K be a finite simplicial complex with vertices v1, …, vN and corresponding barycentric coordinates b1, …, bN. Then the algebra of rational PL forms on K

Sufficient conditions for a semilattice to be a 0- distributive are obtained. Some equivalent formulations of 0- distributivity in a semilattice are given. Further, disjunctive 0- distributive semilattices are also characterized.

Let R be a commutative ring with identity and let X be an indeterminate. In [5] and [16] it was shown that if f, g∈R[X], then for some integer n≥l, c(f)n+1c(g) = c(g)nc(fg), where c(h) denotes the additive subgroup of JR generated by the coefficients of h ∈ R[X]. Actually the statements in [5J and [16] are not so general as this; however, the proofs are. Specifically, in [16] Mertens considers only the case that R is a polynomial ring over the integers, but this gives the result for any ring by specializing the coefficients of f and g. In [5] Dedekind considers only the case that JR is a ring of algebraic integers, but his proof is completely general. Further, the above formula then holds if one lets c(h) denote the S-submodule of R generated by the coefficients of h ∈ R[X], S a subring of R, and it is in this form that it usually appears, especially the case S = R. Dedekind′s very elegant proof is reproduced in [15, p. 9, Lemma 6.1].

For any ergodic transformation T a set A of measure less than ∈ is constructed with the property that for every finite set F there is a j = j(F) such that F ⊂ T-iA. The basic tool used to prove this is a purely combinatorial result which says there is a small subset of { l, 2, …, n } which can be shifted a small amount to cover any k set in {j: δn ≤j≤n}. Applications are given to the theory of combinatorial entropy.

A strong version of Levine′s decomposition of continuity leads to the result that a closed graph weakly continuous function into a rim-compact space is continuous. This result implies a closed graph theorem: every almost continuous closed graph function into a strongly locally compact space is continuous. An open problem of Shwu-Yeng T. Lin and Y.-F. Lin asks if every almost continuous closed graph function from a Baire space to a second countable space is necessarily continuous. This question is answered in the negative by an example.

A hypergraph is a subtree of a tree (SOFT) hypergraph if there exists a tree T such that X=V(T) and for each there is a subtree Ti of T such that Ei = V(Ti). It is shown that H is a SOFT hypergraph if and only if has the Helly property and , the intersection graph of is chordal. Results of Berge and Gavril have previously shown these to be necessary conditions.

The concept of a firm fixed point of a selfmap of a metric space is introduced. Loosely speaking a fixed point is firm if it cannot be moved to a point nearby with the help of a map which is arbitrarily close to the given map. It is shown that a continuum always admits a selfmap with a firm fixed point if the continuum contains a triod and if the vertex of the triod has a neighbourhood which is a dendrite. This condition holds in particular for local dendrites. Hence a local dendrite is an arc or a simple closed curve if and only if it does not admit a selfmap which has a firm fixed point.

There are now a number of Vitali covering properties which have been defined to handle problems arising in differentiation theory. Although some of these have received a unified treatment, as for example in the setting of Orlicz spaces in [1, p. 168], the underlying simplicity can be lost and the intimate connection with the original weak Vitali covering property of de Possel obscured. In this note we present an exposition of a family of covering properties and show how the original methods of de Possel in [4] can be pushed to provide an exact solution of the problem of determining necessary and sufficient covering properties for a basis which is known to differentiate a given class of integrals.

The primary aim of this paper is to extend Barnes [1], Marshall-Olkin [6], and Nehari [8] inequalities as applications of some results introduced in [10] by the author.

Since several results from various sources are adopted here, a unified notation is required in order to simplify our subsequent arguments. To this end, let Lp = Lp(S, ∑, μ), p>0 (unless otherwise stated), be the space of all pth power non-negative integrable functions over a given finite measure space (S, ∑, μ) (where S may be regarded as a bounded subset of real numbers).

Let G be a periodic group and ZG its integral group ring. The elements ±g(g∈G) are called the trivial units of ZG. In [1], S. D. Berman has shown that if G is finite, then every unit of finite order is trivial if and only if G is abelian or the direct product of a quaternion group of order 8 and an elementary abelin 2-group. By comparison, Losey in [7] has shown that if ZG contains one non-trivial unit of finite order, then it contains infinitely many.

N. Bourbaki [1] was the first to introduce the class of locally convex topological vector spaces called “espaces tonnelés” or “barrelled spaces.” These spaces have some of the important properties of Banach spaces and Fréchet spaces. Indeed, a generalized Banach-Steinhaus theorem is valid for them, although barrelled spaces are not necessarily metrizable. Extensive accounts of the properties of barrelled locally convex topological vector spaces are found in [5] and [8].

In (3), J. Lewittes establishes a connection between the number of fixed points of an automorphism of a compact Riemann surface and Weierstrass points on the surface; Lewittes′ techniques are analytic in nature. In (4), D. L. McQuillan proved the result by purely algebraic methods and extended it to arbitrary algebraic function fields in one variable over algebraically closed ground fields, but with restriction to tamely ramified places. In this paper we will give a different proof of the theorem and show that it is an elementary consequence of the Riemann-Hurwitz relative genus formula. Moreover, we can remove the tame ramification restriction.
