We study the number of limit cycles bifurcating from the origin of a Hamiltonian system of degree 4. We prove, using the averaging theory of order 7, that there are quartic polynomial systems close these Hamiltonian systems having 3 limit cycles.

We prove some open book embedding results in the contact category with a constructive approach. As a consequence, we give an alternative proof of a theorem of Etnyre and Lekili that produces a large class of contact 3-manifolds admitting contact open book embeddings in the standard contact 5-sphere. We also show that all the Ustilovsky $(4m+1)$-spheres contact open book embed in the standard contact $(4m+3)$-sphere.

With entries of the adjacency matrix of a simple graph being regarded as elements of $\mathbb{F}_{2}$, it is proved that a finite commutative ring $R$ with $1\neq 0$ is a Boolean ring if and only if either $R\in \{\mathbb{F}_{2},\mathbb{F}_{2}\times \mathbb{F}_{2}\}$ or the eigenvalues (in the algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_{2}$) corresponding to the zero-divisor graph of $R$ are precisely the elements of $\mathbb{F}_{4}\setminus \{0\}$ . This is achieved by observing a way in which algebraic behavior in a Boolean ring is encoded within Pascal’s triangle so that computations can be carried out by appealing to classical results from number theory.

Let $p(\cdot ):\mathbb{R}^{n}\rightarrow (0,\infty )$ be a variable exponent function satisfying the globally log-Hölder continuous condition. In this paper, we obtain the boundedness of paraproduct operators $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{b}$ on variable Hardy spaces $H^{p(\cdot )}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$, where $b\in \text{BMO}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$. As an application, we show that non-convolution type Calderón–Zygmund operators $T$ are bounded on $H^{p(\cdot )}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ if and only if $T^{\ast }1=0$, where $\frac{n}{n+\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}}<\text{ess inf}_{x\in \mathbb{R}^{n}}p\leqslant \text{ess sup}_{x\in \mathbb{R}^{n}}p\leqslant 1$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}$ is the regular exponent of kernel of $T$. Our approach relies on the discrete version of Calderón’s reproducing formula, discrete Littlewood–Paley–Stein theory, almost orthogonal estimates, and variable exponents analysis techniques. These results still hold for variable Hardy space on spaces of homogeneous type by using our methods.

We obtain sharp $L^{p}$ bounds for oscillatory integral operators with generic homogeneous polynomial phases in several variables. The phases considered in this paper satisfy the rank one condition that is an important notion introduced by Greenleaf, Pramanik, and Tang. Under certain additional assumptions, we can establish sharp damping estimates with critical exponents to prove endpoint $L^{p}$ estimates.

We make a few observations on the absence of geometric and topological rigidity for acylindrically hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups. In particular, we demonstrate the lack of a well-defined limit set for acylindrical actions on hyperbolic spaces, even under the assumption of universality. We also prove a statement about relatively hyperbolic groups inspired by a remark by Groves, Manning, and Sisto about the quasi-isometry type of combinatorial cusps. Finally, we summarize these results in a table in order to assert a meta-statement about the decay of metric rigidity as the conditions on actions on hyperbolic spaces are loosened.

Component graphs $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{0}(F)$ are defined for arrays of sets $F$, and, in particular, for arrays of path components for Vietoris–Rips complexes and Lesnick complexes. The path components of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{0}(F)$ are the stable components of the array $F$. The stable components for the system of Lesnick complexes $\{L_{s,k}(X)\}$ for a finite data set $X$ decompose into layers, which are themselves path components of a graph. Combinatorial scoring functions are defined for layers and stable components.

Suppose that $0<|\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}|<1$ and $m\geqslant 2$ is an integer. Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C},m}$ be the self-similar measure defined by $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C},m}(\cdot )=\frac{1}{m}\sum _{j=0}^{m-1}\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C},m}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}^{-1}(\cdot )-j)$. Assume that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}=\pm (q/p)^{1/r}$ for some $p,q,r\in \mathbb{N}^{+}$ with $(p,q)=1$ and $(p,m)=1$. We prove that if $(q,m)=1$, then there are at most $m$ mutually orthogonal exponential functions in $L^{2}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C},m})$ and $m$ is the best possible. If $(q,m)>1$, then there are any number of orthogonal exponential functions in $L^{2}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C},m})$.

In this note we prove that the Kalton interlaced graphs do not equi-coarsely embed into the James space ${\mathcal{J}}$ nor into its dual ${\mathcal{J}}^{\ast }$. It is a particular case of a more general result on the non-equi-coarse embeddability of the Kalton graphs into quasi-reflexive spaces with a special asymptotic structure. This allows us to exhibit a coarse invariant for Banach spaces, namely the non-equi-coarse embeddability of this family of graphs, which is very close to but different from the celebrated property ${\mathcal{Q}}$ of Kalton. We conclude with a remark on the coarse geometry of the James tree space ${\mathcal{J}}{\mathcal{T}}$ and of its predual.

This paper investigates the computational complexity of deciding if a given finite idempotent algebra has a ternary term operation $m$ that satisfies the minority equations $m(y,x,x)\approx m(x,y,x)\approx m(x,x,y)\approx y$. We show that a common polynomial-time approach to testing for this type of condition will not work in this case and that this decision problem lies in the class NP.

Let $G$ be a $p$-group and let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}$ be an irreducible character of $G$. The codegree of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}$ is given by $|G:\,\text{ker}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D712})|/\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}(1)$. If $G$ is a maximal class $p$-group that is normally monomial or has at most three character degrees, then the codegrees of $G$ are consecutive powers of $p$. If $|G|=p^{n}$ and $G$ has consecutive $p$-power codegrees up to $p^{n-1}$, then the nilpotence class of $G$ is at most 2 or $G$ has maximal class.

Representations of the Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal{O}}_{N}$ are constructed from interval dynamical systems associated with slow continued fraction algorithms introduced by Giovanni Panti. Their irreducible decomposition formulas are characterized by using the modular group action on real numbers, as a generalization of results by Kawamura, Hayashi, and Lascu. Furthermore, a certain symmetry of such an interval dynamical system is interpreted as a covariant representation of the $C^{\ast }$-dynamical system of the “flip-flop” automorphism of ${\mathcal{O}}_{2}$.

In this paper, we study how to distinguish the embedded topology of a smooth quartic and its bitangent lines. In order to do this, we introduce the concept of two-graphs and switching classes from graph theory. This new method improves previous results about a quartic and three bitangent lines considered by E. Artal Bartolo and J. Vallès, four bitangent lines considered by the authors and H. Tokunaga, and enables us to distinguish the embedded topology of a smooth quartic and five or more bitangent lines. As an application, we obtain a new Zariski 5-tuple and a Zariski 9-tuple for arrangements consisting of a smooth quartic and five of its bitangent lines and six of its bitangent lines, respectively.

We present conditions for a set of matrices satisfying a permutation identity to be simultaneously triangularizable. As applications of our results, we generalize Radjavi’s result on triangularization of matrices with permutable trace and results by Yan and Tang on linear triangularization of polynomial maps.

We construct total orders on the vertex set of an oriented tree. The orders are based only on up-down counts at the interior vertices and the edges along the unique geodesic from a given vertex to another.

As an application, we provide a short proof (modulo Bass–Serre theory) of Vinogradov’s result that the free product of left-orderable groups is left-orderable.

We discuss the geometry of rational maps from a projective space of an arbitrary dimension to the product of projective spaces of lower dimensions induced by linear projections. In particular, we give an algebro-geometric variant of the projective reconstruction theorem by Hartley and Schaffalitzky.

The aim of this paper is to develop an approach to obtain self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators acting on anti-dual pairs. The main advantage of such a result is that it can be applied for structures not carrying a Hilbert space structure or a normable topology. In fact, we will show how hermitian extensions of linear functionals of involutive algebras can be governed by means of their induced operators. As an operator theoretic application, we provide a direct generalization of Parrott’s theorem on contractive completion of 2 by 2 block operator-valued matrices. To exhibit the applicability in noncommutative integration, we characterize hermitian extendibility of symmetric functionals defined on a left ideal of a $C^{\ast }$-algebra.

We study the following problem: For which Tychonoff spaces $X$ do the free topological group $F(X)$ and the free abelian topological group $A(X)$ admit a quotient homomorphism onto a separable and nontrivial (i.e., not finitely generated) group? The existence of the required quotient homomorphisms is established for several important classes of spaces $X$, which include the class of pseudocompact spaces, the class of locally compact spaces, the class of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$-compact spaces, the class of connected locally connected spaces, and some others.

We also show that there exists an infinite separable precompact topological abelian group $G$ such that every quotient of $G$ is either the one-point group or contains a dense non-separable subgroup and, hence, does not have a countable network.

We show that derivations of the differential structure of a subcartesian space satisfy the chain rule and have maximal integral curves.

We use the Carleson measure-embedding theorem for weighted Bergman spaces to characterize the positive Borel measures $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ on the unit disc such that certain analytic function spaces of Dirichlet type are embedded (compactly embedded) in certain tent spaces associated with a measure $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$. We apply these results to study Volterra operators and multipliers acting on the mentioned spaces of Dirichlet type.
