Over a year of seismic observations, ~5000 short duration icequakes were detected by a permanent broadband station installed at the Princess Elisabeth base, located ~180 km inland in eastern Dronning Maud Land, East-Antarctica. Icequake detection via seismic waveform pattern recognition indicates the presence of two dominating clusters of events, totalizing ~1500 icequakes. The corresponding icequake locations point towards two distinct zones of outcropping blue ice areas (BIAs) located respectively at 4 and 1 km from the seismic station, both on the leeward side of a nunatak protruding through the ice sheet. The temporal occurrence of these icequakes suggests a close genetic link with thermal contraction of ice caused by significant surface cooling controlled, in summer by variations in diurnal solar radiation and in winter by strong cooling during cold katabatic regimes. Further analysis demonstrates the dependence of these icequakes on the absolute surface temperature and on its temporal change. Besides providing information on the ice fracture mechanics and rheology, investigations of thermal icequakes may be regarded as a ground-based proxy for the monitoring of the thermal state of BIAs, and characterization of ice-sheet ablation zones.

A one-dimensional evolution equation for the slope-normal velocity profile of a streamwise uniform avalanche over an entrainable bed is derived. The boundary conditions are no slip at the bed, a stress-free surface and constant bed shear stress equal to the shear strength of the snow cover. The resulting equation is solved numerically by means of finite differences on a regular grid with a superposed fine grid near the erosion front that is adjusted at each time-step. The first exploratory simulations yield realistic entrainment rates and show that the entrainment rate tends towards a constant value while the flow depth and the velocity increase linearly with time for all investigated rheologies. It is shown that there indeed exists a rheology-independent asymptotic solution to the equation of motion of an entraining slab if the bottom friction is equal to the bed shear strength; the asymptotic acceleration is found to be half the downslope gravitational acceleration. The model can easily be extended to general path profiles, non-uniform flows and variable snow properties.

Evans Ice Stream, West Antarctica, has five tributaries and a complex grounding zone. The grounding zone of Evans Ice Stream, between the landward and seaward limits of tidal flexing, was mapped using SAR interferometry. The width of the mapped grounding zone was compared with that derived from an elastic beam model, and the tidal height changes derived from interferometry were compared with the results of a tidal model. Results show that in 1994 and 1996 the Evans grounding zone was located up to 100 km upstream of its location in the BEDMAP dataset. The grounding line of Evans Ice Stream is subjected to 5 m vertical tidal forcing, which would clearly affect ice-stream flow.

Investigations of grounding-line sedimentation in front of tidewater termini of temperate valley glaciers demonstrate that sediment yields and dynamics provide a second-order control on glacier stability by influencing water depth at the grounding line. Sediment is delivered to the grounding line by two routes: (1) debris transported in, on and beneath the glacier, and (2) sediment transported in glacial outwash streams. Glacial streams in Glacier Bay, Alaska, U.S.A., deliver 106 to 107 m3 year−1 of sediment to the grounding lines. The glacial debris flux transports 105 to 106 m3 year−1 of debris to the ice cliffs, where approximately 10% is released at the grounding line, the remainder being transported downfjord by iceberg-rafting. An additional 105 m3 year−1 of sediment may be transported to the grounding line by shearing and advection of a deformable bed.

The surface of the Ross Ice Shelf (RIS) is textured by flow stripes, crevasses and other features related to ice flow and deformation. Here, moderate resolution optical satellite images are used to map and classify regions of the RIS characterized by different surface textures. Because the textures arise from ice deformation, the map is used to identify structural provinces with common deformation history. We classify four province types: regions associated with large outlet glaciers, shear zones, extension downstream of obstacles and suture zones between provinces with different upstream sources. Adjacent provinces with contrasting histories are in some locations deforming at different rates, suggesting that our province map is also an ice fabric map. Structural provinces have more complicated shapes in the part of the ice shelf fed by West Antarctic ice streams than in the part fed by outlet glaciers from the Transantarctic Mountains. The map may be used to infer past variations in stress conditions and flow events that cannot be inferred from flow traces alone.

As a joint contribution of Japan and Sweden to the International Polar Year 2007–09, a field expedition between Syowa and Wasa stations in East Antarctica was carried out in the 2007/08 austral summer season. Along the 2800 km long expedition route, the dielectric permittivity of the upper 1 m snow layer was measured at intervals of approximately 50 km using a snow fork, a parallel-wire transmission-line resonator. More than 2000 measurements were performed under carefully calibrated conditions, mostly in the interior of Antarctica. The permittivity ε′ was a function of snow density as in previous studies on dry snow, but the values were significantly smaller than those reported before. In the light of the dielectric mixture theory, the relatively smaller ε′ obtained in this study can be attributed to the snow structures characteristic in the studied region. Our data suggest that the permittivity of snow in the Antarctic interior is significantly affected by weak bonding between snow grains, which is due to depth-hoar formation in the extremely low-temperature conditions.

Measurements of δ34S covering the years 1935–76 and including the 1963 Agung (Indonesia) eruption were made on a West Antarctic firn core, RIDSA (78.73˚ S, 116.33˚ W; 1740ma.s.l.), and results are used to unravel potential source functions in the sulfur cycle over West Antarctica. The δ34S values of SO42– range from 3.1‰ to 9.9‰. These values are lower than those reported for central Antarctica, from near South Pole station, of 9.3–18.1‰ (Patris and others, 2000). While the Agung period is isotopically distinct at South Pole, it is not in the RIDSA dataset, suggesting differences in the source associations for the sulfur cycle between these two regions. Given the relatively large input of marine aerosols at RIDSA (determined from Na+ data and the seasonal SO42– cycle), there is likely a large marine biogenic SO42– influence. The δ34S values indicate, however, that this marine biogenic SO42–, with a well-established δ34S of 18‰, is mixing with SO42– that has extremely negative δ34S values to produce the measured isotope values in the RIDSA core. We suggest that the transport and deposition of stratospheric SO42– in West Antarctica, combined with local volcanic input, accounts for the observed variance in δ34S values.

Aldegondabreen is a small valley glacier, ending on land, located in the Grønfjorden area of Spitsbergen, Svalbard. Airborne radio-echo sounding in 1974/75, using a 440 MHz radar, revealed a polythermal two-layered structure, which has been confirmed by detailed ground-based radio-echo sounding done in 1999 using a 15 MHz monopulse radar. The 1999 radar data reveal an upper cold layer extending down to 90m depth in the southern part of the glacier, where the thickest ice (216 m) was also found. A repeated pattern of diffractions from the southern part of the glacier, at depths of 50–80 m and dipping down-glacier, has been interpreted as an englacial channel which originates in the temperate ice. From joint analysis of the 1936 topographic map, a digital elevation model constructed from 1990 aerial photographs and the subglacial topography determined from radar data, a severe loss of mass during the period 1936–90 has been estimated: a glacier tongue retreat of 930 m, a decrease in area from 8.9 to 7.6 km2, in average ice thickness from 101 to 73 m and in ice volume from 0.950 to 0.558 km3, which are equivalent to an average annual balance of –0.7 mw.e. This is comparable with the only available data of net mass balance for Aldegondabreen (–1.1 and –1.35m w.e. for the balance years 1976/77 and 2002/03) and consistent with the 0.27˚C increase in mean summer air temperature in this zone during 1936–90, as well as the warming in Spitsbergen following the end of the Little Ice Age (LIA), and the general glacier recession trend observed in this region.

The EISMINT II experiments revealed the tendency for idealized model ice sheets to produce spatially variable flow under certain uniform thermal, mass-balance and topographic boundary conditions. Warm, fast-flowing streams with enhanced creep were separated by zones of colder, slower flow. Similar but different spatial patterns of differentiated flow were produced by all authors. We present further experiments that explore the formation and function of such ice streams at higher modelled resolutions. These are explored by the use of flat, but stochastically rough (10 m amplitude) beds, idealized, parallel-sided model ice sheets and models of finer (12.5 and 5 km) resolutions. Ice streams self-organize irregularly, but with consistent typical spacings which vary with thermal and miss-balance boundary conditions. More radial features are produced at finer scales indicating a dependency on the grid resolution used although this is not linear; at finer resolutions streams occupy increasingly more gridcells. This variation in scale may be related to the finer resolution of the warm/cold streaming/non-streaming boundary. The numerical solution of the thermodynamic ice equation is also highly sensitive to the orthogonality of the model grid. A major deficiency is that the numerical solution appears to fail where the flow is parallel to the grid axes, suggesting that artificial diffusion in the numerical scheme helps to smooth streams lying across the axes directions. The inclusion of sliding produces fewer, more concentrated, flow features, but these also display a level of scale-dependent organization. The spatial arrangement of such streams adjusts in response to the global mass flux of the ice sheet between "warm" and "cold" flow end-member. The results point to a mechanism in which ice sheets respond to climate by altering the large-scale arrangement of their flow patterns.

Several hundred subglacial lakes have been identified beneath Antarctica so far. Their interaction with the overlying ice sheet and their influence on ice dynamics are still subjects of investigation. While it is known that lakes reduce the ice-sheet friction towards a free-slip basal boundary condition, little is known about how basal melting and freezing at the lake/ice interface modifies the ice dynamics, thermal regime and ice rheology. In this diagnostic study we simulate the Vostok Subglacial Lake area with a coupled full Stokes 3-D ice-flow model and a 3-D lake-circulation model. The exchange of energy (heat) and mass at the lake/ice interface increases (decreases) the temperature in the ice column above the lake by up to 10% in freezing (melting) areas, resulting in a significant modification of the highly nonlinear ice viscosity. We show that basal lubrication at the bottom of the ice sheet has a significant impact not only on the ice flow above the lake itself, but also on the vicinity and far field. While the ice flow crosses Vostok Subglacial Lake, flow divergence is observed and modelled. The heterogeneous basal-mass-balance pattern at the lake/ice interface intensifies this divergence. Instead of interactive coupling between the ice-flow model and the lake-flow model, only a single iteration is required for a realistic representation of the ice/water interaction. In addition, our study indicates that simplified parameterizations of the surface temperature boundary condition might lead to a velocity error of 20% for the area of investigation.

The seasonal cycle of fast ice thickness in Prydz Bay, East Antarctica, was observed between March and December 2012. In March, we observed a 0.16 m thickness gain of 0.22 m-thick first-year ice (FYI), while 1.16 m-thick second-year ice (SYI) nearby simultaneously ablated by 0.59 m. A 1-D thermodynamic sea-ice model was applied to identify the factors that led to the simultaneous growth of FYI and melt of SYI. The different evolutions were explained by the difference in the conductive heat flux between the FYI and SYI. As the FYI was thin, there was a large temperature gradient between the ice base and the colder ice surface. This generated an upward conductive heat flux, which was larger than the heat flux from the ocean to the ice base, yielding basal growth of ice. In the case of the thicker SYI the temperature gradient and, hence, the conductive heat flux were smaller, and not sufficient to balance the oceanic heat flux at the ice base, yielding basal ablation. Penetration of solar radiation affected the conductive heat flux in both cases, and the model results were sensitive to the initial ice temperature profile and the uncertainty of the oceanic heat flux.

In order to study the seasonal and inter-seasonal variations in radio-wave velocity (RWV), radiophysical investigations were made at Hansbreen, a polythermal glacier in Spitsbergen, in July– August 2003 and April 2004. These investigations included repeated radar profiling (20 and 25 MHz) along a transverse profile, repeated common-midpoint measurements, continuous radar measurements during 8 days at a fixed site, meteorological observations, and continuous ice surface velocity monitoring by differential GPS. Seasonal and inter-seasonal RWV changes in the temperate ice layer are attributed, respectively, to rapid water redistribution within it during the summer, and to variations in water content from 2.1% in summer to 0.4% in spring. The reflection properties of the temperate ice layer correlate well with the air temperature, with a nearly semi-diurnal time lag. The temporal variability of the reflection properties of the internal horizon suggests enlargement of water inclusions or water drainage from the horizon. Repeated profiling shows a stable spatial pattern in bed reflection power interpreted as changes in water content controlled by bedrock topography. The spatial variations of internal reflection energy along the repeated profile correlate with the thickness of the cold ice layer and the occurrence of drainage and crevasse systems.

An interpolated bedrock topography is presented for Flask Glacier, one of the tributaries of the remnant part of the Larsen B ice shelf, Antarctic Peninsula. The ice thickness distribution is derived by combining direct but sparse measurements from airborne radio-echo soundings with indirect estimates obtained from ice-flow modelling. The ice-flow model is applied to a series of transverse profiles, and a first estimate of the bedrock is iteratively adjusted until agreement between modelled and measured surface velocities is achieved. The adjusted bedrock is then used to reinterpret the radio-echo soundings, and the recovered information used to further improve the estimate of the bedrock itself. The ice flux along the glacier center line provides an additional and independent constraint on the ice thickness. The resulting bedrock topography reveals a glacier bed situated mainly below sea level with sections having retrograde slope. The total ice volume of 120 ±15 km3 for the considered area of 215 km2 corresponds to an average ice thickness of 560 ± 70 m.

Three holes were drilled to the bed of Rutford Ice Stream, through ice up to 2154 m thick, to investigate the basal processes and conditions associated with fast ice flow and the glacial history of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. A narrative of the drilling, measuring and sampling activities, as well as some preliminary results and initial interpretations of subglacial conditions, is given. These were the deepest subglacial access holes ever drilled using the hot-water drilling method. Samples of bed and englacial sediments were recovered, and a number of instruments were installed in the ice column and the bed. The ice–bed interface was found to be unfrozen, with an existing, well-developed subglacial hydrological system at high pressure, within ~1% of the ice overburden. The bed itself comprises soft, water-saturated sediments, consistent with previous geophysical interpretations. Englacial sediment quantity varies significantly between two locations ~2 km apart, and possibly over even shorter (~20 m) distances. Difficulties and unusual observations encountered while connecting to the subglacial hydrological system in one hole possibly resulted from the presence of a large clast embedded in the bottom of the ice.

The calving rates and calving styles of temperate glaciers that calve into fresh water are distinctively different from those of temperate tide-water glaciers. These contrasts are important for interpreting and predicting the response of ice masses to climate change. Glaciar Upsala is a large calving outlet of Hielo Patagónico Sur (southern Patagonia ice field). Its twentieth-century retreat has been climate-driven but significantly modulated by calving dynamics and by the transition from melting to calving at its eastern terminus. Here, the onset of rapid calving in the early 1980s initiated retreat at ≤440 m a−1. The 1992–93 calving rate (vc) is estimated to be 60 m a−1 in a mean water depth (hw) of 67 m. A vc/hw relationship for fresh water based on 14 sites around the world, including seven deep-water sites, confirms both the linear dependency of vc on hw and the contrast between calving rates in tide water and fresh water. As yet, no physical explanation for this contrast exists, but differences in subaqueous melt rates, longitudinal strain rates and crevassing may provide a partial explanation.

If cold firn has reached a density of about 0.55 Mg m-3, further densificaron occurs by a sintering process which increases the contact surface between the firn grains. The pore volume is decreasing continuously but the firn remains permeable to air up to a density of 0.82 Mg m-3. At about this density the remaining air in the pore volume is closed off in isolated bubbles. We are interested in the age and the age distribution of the air enclosed in bubbles relative to the age of the surrounding ice, and are investigating the development of the pore volume in firn.

A newly constructed measuring device allows the field measurement of the amount of air which is already enclosed in bubbles of firn samples. Measurements have been made during summer 1983 in Greenland and during winter 1983/84 at the South Pole. The results are discussed and compared with results obtained with a simplified statistical sintering model, using some results of percolation theory.

Semi-diurnal oscillations are a ubiquitous feature of polar Sea-ice motion. Over much of the Arctic basin, inertial and Semi-diurnal tidal variability have Similar frequencies So that periodicity alone is inadequate to determine the Source of oscillations. We investigate the relative roles of tidal and inertial variability in Arctic Sea ice using a barotropic ice–ocean model with Sea ice embedded in an upper boundary layer. Results from this model are compared with ‘levitated’ ice–ocean coupling used in many models. In levitated models the mechanical buoyancy effect of Sea ice is neglected So that convergence of ice, for example, does not affect the oceanic Ekman flux. We use rotary Spectral analysis to compare Simulated and observed results. This helps to interpret the rotation Sense of Sea-ice drift and deformation at the Semi-diurnal period and is a useful discriminator between tidal and inertial effects. Results indicate that the levitated model generates an artificial inertial resonance in the presence of tidal and wind forcing, contrary to the embedded Sea-ice model. We conclude that Sea-ice mechanics can cause the rotational response of ice motion to change Sign even in the presence of Strong and opposing local tidal forcing when a physically consistent dynamic ice–ocean coupling is employed.

To better understand how ice sheets respond to climate, we designed a new multi-frequency ice-penetrating radar system to investigate subsurface structures of ice sheets. The system is mounted on a single platform and handled by a single operator. Three radio frequencies, 30,60 and 179 MHz, were used. An underlying principle of these multi-frequency observations is that the lower frequencies are more sensitive to electrical conductivity changes, whereas the higher frequencies are more sensitive to dielectric permittivity fluctuations in the ice. The system is composed of three single-frequency pulse radars, a trigger-controller unit and a data-acquisition unit. The trigger controller is the key component of this system. It switches transmitters on at different timings to prevent mixing of signals among the three radars. The timing difference was set as 50 μs, which is equivalent to the two-way travel time for radio waves reflecting from 4250m below the surface. A field test was done along a 2000 km long traverse line in east Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. The multi-frequency system successfully acquired data that are equivalent in quality to our earlier single-frequency measurements along the same traverse line. The details of the system and preliminary data are described.

Snow accumulation and its variability on the East Antarctic plateau are poorly understood due to sparse and regionally confined measurements. We present a 5.3 GHz (C-band) ground-penetrating radar (GPR) profile with a total length of 860 km recovered during the joint Norwegian–US International Polar Year traverse 2007/08. Mean surface mass balance (SMB) over the last 200 years was derived from the GPR data by identifying the volcanic deposition of the Tambora eruption in 1815. It varies between 9.1 and 37.7 kg m−2 a−1 over the profile, with a mean of 23.7 kg m−2 a−1 and a standard deviation of 4.7 kg m−2 a−1. The 200 year SMB estimated is significantly lower than most of the SMB estimates over shorter time periods in this region. This can be partly explained by a SMB minimum in the vicinity of the ice divide. However, it is more likely that a recent increase in SMB observed by several studies is largely responsible for the observed discrepancy.

Entrainment of debris by cold-based glaciers having basal temperatures as low as — 17°C can be observed in the Dry Valleys of south Victoria Land, Antarctica. The classical models developed to explain debris incorporation at the glacier base are inappropriate in such cases, since the basal temperature is well below the freezing point. An alternative model, based on the presence of ice-marginal lakes, has recently been proposed by one of the authors (S. F.). In this model, transient wet-base conditions can occur as ice flows onto the unfrozen sediments of the lake bottom, creating conditions favorable to the entrainment of sediments and to ice accretion by water freezing.

Here we describe a situation where this model is consistent with an ice-composition study of the basal part of Suess Glacier, Taylor Valley. The stable isotope composition indicates that water freezing, most probably lake water, plays a major role in the formation of the basal ice layers. Total gas content of this basal ice is considerably depleted when compared to meteoric glacier ice, in accordance with a rejection mechanism during freezing. Its gas composition, strongly enriched in CO2, is also indicative of the presence of a former liquid phase.
