We present a study of seasonal and interannual ice velocity changes at Polar Record Glacier, East Antarctica, using ERS-1/2, Envisat and PALSAR data with D-InSAR and intensity tracking. Ice flow showed seasonal variations at the front of the glacier tongue. Velocities in winter were 19% less than velocities during summer. No significant interannual changes were detected. Ice velocities in the grounding zone and grounded glacier did not show clear seasonal or interannual changes. The distribution of the seasonal variations suggests that the cause for the changes should be localized. Possible causes are seasonal sea-ice changes and iceberg blocking. Satellite images show that the sea ice surrounding Polar Record Glacier undergoes seasonal changes. Frozen sea ice in winter slowed the huge iceberg, and provided increased resistance to the glacier flow. The interaction between the glacier tongue, iceberg and sea ice significantly influences their flow pattern.

The possibility of long-period ocean waves coupling to an ice shelf is investigated. A thick elastic plate model is used for the ice shelf with comparisons made to the simpler thin-plate model. The strain set up on the ice shelf by a normally incident single frequency ocean wave is calculated by completely solving the equations governing the velocity potential for such a system. In the absence of measurements on an ice shelf, existing measurements of long-period strain on an ice tongue are used to estimate the required incident amplitude in the open water to induce the observed oscillations. It is found that the height of seas required indicates that ocean wave driving is a plausible forcing mechanism for observed oscillations.

The flow of liquid through porous sea ice is a fundamental process affecting problems in polar biology, oceanography and geophysics. The geometry and connectedness of the pore microstructure of sea ice determine its fluid permeability, which depends strongly on temperature. Here we analyze a simple pipe network as a basis for modeling fluid flow through the complex porous microstructure, and for numerical approximations of the fluid permeability of sea ice as a function of temperature. For slow flow the fluid system is equivalent to an electrical resistor network, and the network is solved using a fast multi-grid method. The radii of the pipes in the network are chosen randomly from distributions describing measured cross-sectional areas of brine inclusions in sea ice. At this stage, the model reflects only the most general features of brine microstructure and its evolution with temperature. Preliminary results for a basic implementation in two dimensions are presented. They are consistent with theoretical bounds on the vertical fluid permeability of sea ice found recently. Moreover, the results agree roughly with laboratory data for higher porosities. For lower porosities and colder temperatures, the fully connected network of pipes in the model, albeit with smaller radii, overestimates observed values. This finding provides evidence that the brine network becomes more disconnected with lower temperatures, which is consistent with transitional behavior near a percolation threshold.

Horizontal variation of landfast sea-ice properties was studied in the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea, during March 2004. In order to estimate their variability among and within different spatial levels, 72 ice cores were sampled on five spatial scales (with spacings of 10 cm, 2.5 m, 25 m, 250m and 2.5 km) using a hierarchical sampling design. Entire cores were melted, and bulk-ice salinity, concentrations of chlorophyll a (Chl a), phaeophytin (Phaeo), dissolved nitrate plus nitrite (DIN) as well as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) were determined. All sampling sites were covered by a 5.5–23 cm thick layer of snow. Ice thicknesses of cores varied from 26 to 58 cm, with bulk-ice salinities ranging between 0.2 and 0.7 as is typical for Baltic Sea ice. Observed values for Chl a (range: 0.8–6.0 mg Chl a L–1; median: 2.9 mg Chl a L–1) and DOC (range: 37–397 μM; median: 95 μM) were comparable to values reported by previous sea-ice studies from the Baltic Sea. Analysis of variance among different spatial levels revealed significant differences on the 2.5km scale for ice thickness, DOC and Phaeo (with the latter two being positively correlated with ice thickness). For salinity and Chl a, the 250 m scale was found to be the largest scale where significant differences could be detected, while snow depth only varied significantly on the 25 m scale. Variability on the 2.5 m scale contributed significantly to the total variation for ice thickness, salinity, Chl a and DIN. In the case of DON, none of the investigated levels exhibited variation that was significantly different from the considerable amount of variation found between replicate cores. Results from a principal component analysis suggest that ice thickness is one of the main elements structuring the investigated ice habitat on a large scale, while snow depth, nutrients and salinity seem to be of secondary importance.

A model for ice flow in a polar ice sheet is presented. It is based on laboratory measurements of ice rheology, and includes the effect of anisotropic-flow enhancement in tertiary creep as the ice progresses through a range of stress regimes as it passes through the ice sheet. This flow model is applied to the transect from the summit of Law Dome, East Antarctica, to Gape Folger. In the upper layers of the ice sheet good agreement is found between the shear strain-rate profiles from the model and borehole-inclination measurements. Modifications of the simple model predictions for high shear strain rates in the lower layers of the ice cap are required in order to match the observed surface velocities. In these lower regions reductions in both the enhancement of shear flow and shear stress appear to be required, and this suggests that more attention needs to be given to the dynaimcs deep within ice sheets.

Variability of sea-ice and snow conditions on the scale of a few hundred meters is examined using in situ measurements collected in first-year pack ice in the European Arctic north of Svalbard. Snow thickness and surface elevation measurements were performed in the standard manner using a snow stick and a rotating laser. Altogether, 4109 m of measurement lines were surveyed. The snow loading was large, and in many locations the ice freeboard was negative (38.8% of snowline measurements), although the modal ice and snow thickness was 1.8 m. The mean of all the snow thickness measurements was 36 cm, with a standard deviation of 26 cm. The mean freeboard was only 3 cm, with a standard deviation of 23 cm. There were noticeable differences in snow thickness among the measurement sites. Over the undeformed ice areas, the mean snow thickness and freeboard were 23 and 2.4 cm, respectively. Over the ridged ice areas, the mean freeboard was only –0.3 cm due to snow accumulation on the sails of ridges (average thickness 54 cm). These findings imply that retrieval algorithms for converting freeboard to ice thickness should take account of spatial variability of snow cover.

The launch of ERS-l provides coverage, by satellite altimetry, of a large part of the Ross Ice Shelf ineluding areas of input from Byrd Glacier and Ice Streams D and E. Five 35 d repeats of fast-delivery data, comprising approximately 100000 height estimates, have been used to produce a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the Ross Icc Shelf north of 81.5° S. Careful filtering of the altimeter data, which removed about 30% of the measurements, ensured that only valid values were used. The data were grldded to produce a DEM with a cell size of 10km. Repeatability of the data was assessed from an analysis of crossing points of ascending and descending tracks. The rms cross-over difference for the ice shelf was 0.94 m. Using the five repeat tracks gave a random error of 0.30 m for an averaged height measurement. Regionally correlated errors in the orbit and geoid add a systematic long wavelength bias of approximately 2m to the final elevation estimate. Two of the latest geoid models, OSU91-A and JGMI, were compared with the available in situ data and hYdrostatic models based on ice and water densities.

The altimetry was compared with ice-thickness data from Ross Icc Shelf Geophysical and Glaciological Survey (RIGGS) stations and Scott Polar Research Institute radio-echo-sounding surveys undertaken in the 1970s. Differences between the DEM and heights calculated from ice thicknesses and a standard density -depth equation lie, in general, within the combined measurement errors. There are, however, several areas where this is not the case. Prominent north-south stripes of different ice thickness shown on a RIGGS map apparently do not exist. Low elevations are associated with high-density ice draining from East Antarctic outlet glaciers. The grounding line of Icc Streams D and E and an ice plain behind it are clearly demarcated by the break in surface slope. Grounded ice north of Steershead is also observed

We studied the scattering of radio waves off strata within the ice sheet at Mizuho station, Antarctica, to determine the most plausible scattering mechanisms at this location. We measured the effects of birefringence and anisotropic scattering boundaries on the return signal using the following set of experimental conditions: (1) co-polarization and cross-polarization antenna arrangements, (2) all orientations of the antenna system, (3) 60 and 179 MHz frequencies, and (4) pulse lengths of 150–1000 ns. Analyses of the propagated radio waves suggested that the signal is dominated by anisotropic scatter-ingboundaries at 179 MHz, but effects from birefringence also occurred. At depths of 250– 750 m, the scattering was stronger when the polarization plane was along the flowline. In contrast, at depths of about 900–1500 m, scattering was stronger when the polarization plane was perpendicular to the flowline. We suggest that the scattering below about 250 m is related to a layered ice stratum of crystal-orientation fabrics with different types or different cluster strengths. Although our study was at a single site, similar remote measurements over wider regions should provide valuable information about the physical structure of this vast ice sheet.

Sea-ice velocities derived from remotely Sensed microwave imagery of the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) have been analyzed for changes over time in Antarctic Sea-ice velocity, for the period 1988–2004. Year-to-year variability in mean Antarctic annual SSM/I-derived ice Speed is Small (17 year Standard deviation (SD) = 0.008 ms–1), with greater interannual variability in the zonal (eastward positive) velocity components (17 year SD = 0.016ms–1). Seasonally, minimum ice Speed is encountered during Summer, when nearly all Antarctic Sea ice is within the marginal ice zone. Ice motion peaks during winter and Spring, due to high velocities encountered in the outer pack of the Seasonal Sea-ice zone. The correlation (R2 = 0.47) between winter Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and mean winter ice Speed highlights the importance of atmospheric forcing on Sea-ice dynamics. The Spatial pattern of the correlation of the Standardized SAM index with the June–November ice Speed exhibits a wave-3 pattern, which matches the Sea-level pressure distribution. Sea-ice Speed in the upstream regions of quasi-stationary centres of low Sea-level pressure is likely to increase (decrease) during high (low) SAMyears, and the opposite for Sea-ice Speed in the downstream regions of the centres.

Glacier thinning and retreat drives initial acceleration of glacier sliding and erosion, de-buttressing of steep valley walls, and destabilization of ice-marginal deposits and bedrock, which can lead to massive rock avalanching and accelerated incision of tributary watersheds. A compelling example of these changes occurred in Taan Fjord in SE Alaska due to the rapid thinning and retreat of Tyndall Glacier over the past half century. Increased glacier sliding speeds led to both increased rates of subglacial erosion and the evacuation of subglacially stored sediments into the proglacial basins. The shrinking glacier also exposed proglacial tributary watersheds to rapid incision and denudation driven by >350 m of baselevel fall in a few decades. Moreover, in October 2015 a large tsunamigenic landslide occurred at the terminus of Tyndall Glacier, largely due to thinning exposing oversteepened, unstable slopes. Sediment yields from the glacier, the landslide and the tributary watersheds, measured from surveys of the sediments in the fjord collected in 1999 and 2016, are compared to ongoing changes in glacier and fjord geometry to investigate the magnitude of glacial and paraglacial denudation in Taan Fjord during retreat. In the last 50 years, sediment yields from the glacier and non-glacial tributaries kept pace with the rapid rate of retreat, and were on par with each other. Notably, basin-averaged erosion rates from the paraglacial landscape were twice that from the glacier, averaging 58 ± 9 and 26 ± 5 mm a−1, respectively. The sharp increases in sediment yields during retreat observed from both the glacier and the adjacent watersheds, including the landslide, highlight the rapid evolution of landscapes undergoing glacier shrinkage.

Whilst stable-isotope analysis of ice cores yields the best quantitative evidence for past climate, there remains considerable uncertainty about the detailed relationship between the isotopic composition and air temperature. Analysis of two ice cores from the Antarctic Peninsula (a 47.2 m core from the Palmer Land plateau – 74°01’S, 70°38’W, and a 32 m core from Dolleman Island–70°35.2’S, 60°55.5’W) has shown that an oxygen-isotope/ temperature relationship exists at a resolution of inter-annual variations during the period 1938–86. All the major regional temperature anomalies, known from climatic records at several stations, are visible in the isotope profiles, including the overall temperature increase between 1960 and 1980.

An isotope–temperature gradient of 0.5–0.6‰/°C is indicated for the climatic interpretation of isotopic fluctuations in ice cores recovered from the region. This gradient is considerably smaller than that (0.95‰/°C) obtained from a comparison of spatial variations in the mean annual parameters. The discrepancy appears to be due mainly to an inherent biasing in the isotope profiles, which record temperature only during periods of snowfall. The effect is particularly severe in the winter months and can be expected in other areas of Antarctica where a significant part of the snow accumulation is cyclonic.

A collation of available data shows that sea-water with a temperature 3°C above the in-situ freezing point lies beneath George VI Ice Shelf in the Antarctic Peninsula, and is widespread on the Amundsen-Bellingshausen continental shelf. The presence of warm water is a factor in the recent and continuing disintegration of ice shelves in the region, yet the meteorology and oceanography of the sector are little known. We discuss a plausible link between the present climatic conditions, sea-water characteristics and the warm-water intrusion on to the continental shelf, thereby illustrating an indirect climatic influence on the mass balance of ice shelves.

Using results stemming from the International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (ITASE) ice-core array plus data from ice cores from the South Pole and Siple Dome we investigate the use of sodium (Na+), non-sea-salt sulfate (nssSO42–) and methylsulfonate (MS–) as proxies for Antarctic sea-ice extent (SIE). Maximum and mean annual chemistry concentrations for these three species correlate significantly with maximum, mean and minimum annual SIE, offering more information and clarification than single ice-core and single species approaches. Significant correlations greater than 90% exist between Na+ and maximum SIE; nssSO42– with minimum and mean SIE; and MS– with mean SIE. Correlations with SIE within large geographic regions are in the same direction for all ice-core sites for Na+ and nssSO42– but not MS–. All ice cores display an SIE correlation with nssSO42– and MS–, but not all correlate with Na+. This multi-core multi-parameter study provides the initial step in determining which chemical species can be used reliably and in which regions as a building block for embedding other ice-core records. Once established, the resulting temporal and spatial matrix can be used to relate ice extents, atmospheric patterns, biological productivity and site conditions.

Accurate information concerning snow cover, and associated impacts of snow on regional surface albedo, needs to be available for empirical studies and for the validation of climate models. Here, a new integrated dataset for Northern Hemisphere lands is discussed, including files of visible and microwave satellite-derived snow estimates and in situ station data. These files will be used to examine snow extent, snow depth and surface albedo over five-day intervals, and have been generated using geographic-information system techniques. Visible and station observations extend from 1972 to present, and microwave estimates from 1979 to present, The 1×1° gridded files permit the strengths and weaknesses of the individual data sources to be identified and quantified. Also included is a hemispheric time series of snow extern derived from the visible satellite file. Of note are the two pronounced regimes of Northern Hemisphere extent during the past several decades. Between 1972 and 1985, 12 month running means of snow extent fluctuated around a mean of 25.9 × 106 km2. An abrupt transition occurred in 1986 and 1987, and since then mean annual extern has been 24.2 × 106 km2. Recent decreases are found from late winter to early summer.

This paper presents new data, derived from an analysis of 16 firn cores, on the distribution of the accumulation rate and 18O content of near-surface layers in the eastern part of the Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica. The firn cores were drilled along the traverse route of the Filchner-V-Campaign in 1995. The traverse followed an ice flowline of the Foundation Ice Stream and reached the margin of the inland ice, an area which has not yet been investigated. On the ice shelf the accumulation rates decrease with distance from the coast. Ascending to the inland ice the accumulation rates again reach almost coastal values. This regional distribution is in agreement with the temperature gradient along the traverse. The 18 content of the near-surface layers is closely related to the 10 m firn temperature. They strongly decrease from the grounding line towards the inland ice. At the southernmost site at 1100 ma.s.l, the mean δ18O value of the firn decreases to –40‰. Ice with that isotopic signature was found in cores from the central part of the Ronne Ice Shelf just above the marine ice layer, indicating that it originates from this area. All ice deposited as snow further south was melted beneath the ice shelf after passing the grounding-line area. The time series of accumulation rate and 18O content reveal no climatic trend during the last 30-50 years.

Airborne geophysical investigations of the previously tittle-studied Nordaustlandet ice caps (11 150 km2) took place in 1983, using SPRI 60 MHz radio echo-sounding (RES) equipment of 160 dB system performance. RES and navigational data were recorded digitally. Navigation used a ranging system (accurate to ±30 m) from aircraft to ground-based transponders, located by satellite geoceivers, supplemented by the aircraft’s navigational instruments and timed crossings of known features. Ice surface and bedrock elevations were measured, using aircraft pressure altitude, terrain clearance, and ice thickness data. The mean error of 251 crossing points on Austfonna was 11 m. The reduced geophysical data are stored on a direct-access computer database. During 3400 km of flying, Austfonna (8105 km2) was covered by traverses a nominal 5 km apart, whereas a 15 km-spaced grid was flown over Vestfonna (2510 km2). Maps of ice surface morphology and subglacial, bedrock topography were produced for Austfonna and Vestfonna, along with an ice thickness map of Austfonna, Austfonna reaches a maximum surface elevation of 791 m and ice thickness of 583 m. 28% of the bedrock area beneath Austfonna lies below sea level. RES yielded bedrock echoes for 91% of track over Austfonna, but only 52% over Vestfonna. This was probably due to warmer conditions on Vestfonna, resulting in greater absorption and scattering of electro-magnetic energy. Ice surface elevations are a principal data source in the revision of official Norwegian maps of Nordaustlandet.

To understand the long-term climate and glaciological evolution of the ice sheet in the region bordering the Weddell Sea, the British Antarctic Survey has undertaken a series of successful ice core projects drilling to bedrock on Berkner Island, James Ross Island and the Fletcher Promontory. A new project, WACSWAIN, seeks to increase this knowledge by further drilling to bedrock on two further ice rises in this region. In a single-season project, an ice core was recovered to bedrock at 651 m on Skytrain Ice Rise using an ice core drill in a fluid-filled borehole. In a second season, a rapid access drill was used to recover ice chips to 323 m on Sherman Island in a dry borehole, though failing to reach the bedrock which was at an estimated depth of 428 m.

Various field observations of surface-hoar formation were carried out with measurements of vapor sublimation rate and meteorological conditions from 1994 to 1996 in a mountainous area of northern Hokkaido,Japan. The sublimation rate seemed to increase with wind speed when the relative humidity was high, whereas the sublimation rate changed from positive to negative as the wind speed increased when the relative humidity was low (60–70%RH). These results were explained with a numerical model (called the Simple model) for the heat balance at the snow surface; the results of the model showed that there is a specific wind speed which maximizes the sublimation rate when the relative humidity is low, and indicated that the sublimation rate becomes large under humid conditions (>90%RH) and if wind speeds are increasing in the range 0.5–3.5 m s–1. The heat balance at the snow surface reproduced by another snow model, Crocus, agreed well with the observation results. However, Crocus overestimated the sublimation rate by about 1.3 × 10–6 kg m–2 s–1 when surface hoar formed, and underestimated snow surface temperature by several degrees.

Both the Ellesmere Island and Greenland coasts of Smith Sound, at 78°20' N to 78°50' N, exhibit exceptionally well-sculptured and heavily striated Precambrian bedrock. The glacial features were created by the southward flow of the “Smith Sound Ice Stream”, which overrode Pim Island (550 m), where Smith Sound is > 500 m deep and 40 km wide. The Smith Sound Ice Stream was the drainageway to Baffin Bay for ice derived from the coalescence of the Innuitian and Greenland ice sheets over Kane Basin, the shallowest part (much of it <200m) of the Nares Strait system, in late-Wisconsinan (Weichselian) time. The north-south oriented glacial features along the outermost coasts of Smith Sound contrast markedly with the present-day eastward flow of outlet glaciers from the Prince of Wales Icefield (Ellesmere Island) and the westward flow of outlet glaciers from the Greenland ice sheet (Inglefield Land). The oldest 14C ages on marine shells and lake sediments show that glacier ice had receded from the Ellesmere Island coast of Smith Sound by 9000 14C yr BP. The heads of the three longest fiords, 120-140 km to the west and northwest, did not become ice-free until 450014C yr BP.

The meltwater from glaciers in Alaska contributes strongly to global sea-level rise, but accurate determination is challenging as only two comparatively small glaciers have long-term measurements of annual mass balance (Gulkana and Wolverine). Simple upscaling of their values to the entire region is error-prone as their representativeness is unknown and might be biased. Alternatively, differencing digital elevation models (DEMs) from two epochs provides overall volume changes for a longer period of time that can be converted to mass changes using appropriate density assumptions. Here we combine outlines from two glacier inventories to determine glacier-specific elevation changes over a 50 year period for 3180 glaciers in western Alaska using DEM differencing. This allows us to determine the representativeness of the land-terminating Gulkana and Wolverine Glaciers for the entire region and to exclude calving glaciers (marine and lacustrine) from the sample. Mean changes for all land-terminating, lake-terminating and tidewater glaciers are –0.23 ± 0.44, –0.63 ± 0.40 and –0.64 ± 0.66 m a–1, respectively, and –0.7 and –0.6 m a–1 for the two mass-balance or benchmark glaciers. Thus fortuitously their changes better represent calving glaciers and the overall mean (–0.63 ± 1.14 m a–1) than the change of land-terminating glaciers, i.e. they are not representative for their own type. Different methods of considering potential DEM artefacts provide variable mean changes but the same general result.
