Measurements made during the Ross Ice Shelf Geophysical and Glaciological Survey (RIGGS, 1973–78) are used to determine the large-scale rheological conditions of the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica. Our method includes a numerical ice-shelf model based on the stress-equilibrium equations and control theory. We additionally perform a few tests on simplified geometries to investigate the precision of our method. Our results consist of a map of the depth-averaged viscosity of the central part of the Ross Ice Shelf to within an uncertainty of 20%. We find that the viscosity variations are consistent with Glen’s flow law. Application of a more realistic flow law in our study provides little enhancement of ice-shelf model accuracy until uncertainties associated with basal melting conditions and with temperature profiles at inflow boundaries are addressed. Finally, our results suggest a strong viscosity anomaly in the west-central part of the ice shelf, which is interpreted to be associated with changes in the dynamics of Ice Stream A or B at least 1000 years ago. This feature conforms to the prevailing notion that the West Antarctic ice streams are unsteady.

Stepwise linear regression models were calibrated against the measured mass balance of glaciers in the Austrian Alps for the prediction of specific annual net balance and summer balance from climatological and topographical input data. For estimation of winter mass balance, a simple ratio between the amount of winter precipitation and the measured winter balance was used. A ratio with a mean value of 2.0 and a standard deviation of 0.44 was derived from the sample of measured winter balances. Climate input data were taken from the HISTALP database which offers a homogenized data source that is outstanding in terms of its spatial and temporal coverage. Data from the Austrian glacier inventory were used as topographical input data. From the group of possible predictors summer air temperature, winter precipitation, summer snow precipitation and continentality (as defined from seasonal temperature variation) were selected as climatological driving forces in addition to lowest glacier elevation and area-weighted mean glacier elevation as topographical driving forces. Summer temperature explains 60% of the variance of summer mass balance and 39% of the variance of annual mass balance. Additional factors increase the explained variance by 22% for summer and 31% for annual net balance. The calibrated mass-balance model was used to reconstruct the mass balance of Hintereisferner and Vernagtferner back to 1800. Whereas the model performs well for Hintereisferner, it fails for some sub-periods for Vernagtferner due to the complicated flow dynamics of the glacier.

The Blue Ice Drill (BID) is a large-diameter agile drill system designed by the Ice Drilling Design and Operations group of the University of Wisconsin–Madison to quickly core-clean 241 mm diameter ice samples from near-surface sites. It consists of a down-hole motor/gear reducer rotating a coring cutter and core barrel inside an outer barrel for efficient cuttings transport in solid ice. A variable-frequency drive and custom control box regulates electrical power to the drill. Torque reaction is accomplished on the surface via handles attached to a torsion stem. Core recovery is achieved with either core dogs in the sonde or with a separate core recovery tool. All down-hole tools are suspended on a collapsible tripod via ropes running on a capstan winch. The BID is operated by a minimum of two people and has been used successfully during two seasons of coring on a blue ice area of Taylor Glacier, Antarctica. An updated version of the drill system, BID-Deep, has been designed to recover cores to depths up to 200 m.

We collected ~1300 km of ground-penetrating radar profiles over McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica, using frequencies between 40 and 400 MHz to determine extent, continuity and depth to the brine. We also used profiles to determine meteoric ice thickness and locate englacial features, which may suggest ice shelf instability. The brine extends 9–13 km inland from the ice shelf terminus and covers the entire region between Ross, White and Black Islands. Jump unconformities and basal fractures exist in the brine and ice shelf, respectively, suggesting prior fracturing and re-suturing. One 100 MHz profile, the most distal from the ice shelf edge while still being situated over the brine, simultaneously imaged the brine and bottom of meteoric ice. This suggests a negative brine salinity gradient moving away from the terminus. The meteoric ice bottom was also imaged in a few select locations through blue ice in the ablation zone near Black Island. We suggest that brine, sediment-rich ice and poor antenna coupling on rough ice attenuates the signal in this area. When combined with other recent mass-balance and structural glaciology studies of MIS, our results could contribute to one of the most high-resolution physical models of an ice shelf in Antarctica.

The direct comparison of modeled glacier mass-balance distribution with field measurements could be problematic, as the methodology of determination and the processes considered at the point or catchment scale could differ strongly. Moreover, direct measurements cover only small parts of a glacier, and model performance is thus difficult to assess outside these regions. Remaining opportunities for model validation include comparison of snowlines, as derived from remote-sensing data, and maps of the mass-balance distribution, as interpreted by observers with local knowledge. This study compares such hand-drawn maps of the Vernagtferner (Oetzal Alps) mass balance with the modeled pattern as obtained from a distributed energy-/mass-balance model of intermediate complexity. The model is driven by measured daily values of temperature, global radiation and precipitation from a nearby climate station and grids of mean daily potential global radiation and climatologic annual precipitation sums. Compared with the direct measurements, the calculated mean mass balance and equilibrium-line altitude agreed very well in both balance years, although the spatial pattern of the mass-balance distribution displayed larger deviations in regions influenced by snowdrift or local topographic undulations. However, compared with the remaining snow as visible on a satellite image from 1999, the modeled snowline pattern for a larger sample of glaciers is in very good agreement.

Glacier mass balance in Norway is only observed over a small portion (<15%) of the glacierized surface and only for short time periods (<10 years) for most sites. To provide a comprehensive overview of the temporal mass-balance evolution, we modeled surface mass balance for the glacierized area of mainland Norway from 1961 to 2010. The model is forced by operationally gridded daily temperature and precipitation fields which are available at 1 km horizontal resolution from 1957 until the present. The applied mass-balance model accounts for melting of snow and ice by using a distributed temperature-index approach. The precipitation input is corrected to obtain agreement between modeled and observed winter mass balance, and a melt factor and two radiation coefficients are optimized to the corresponding summer balance. The model results show positive trends of winter balance between 1961 and 2000 followed by a remarkable decrease in both summer and winter balances which resulted in an average annual balance of –0.86 ± 0.15 m w.e. a-1 between 2000 and 2010 after four decades of zero to slightly positive annual mass balances.

Here we apply a two-phase flow model to simulate snow avalanche motion. Flowing snow is modeled as a Bingham fluid. Small-scale laboratory experiments were conducted using a rotating viscometer to validate the constitutive model. Experimental scale model test-runs were also performed, and run-out distances and impact pressures obtained in the model tests were reproduced using the two-phase flow model. Comparisons revealed that the simulated results were strongly dependent on the basal friction angle and calculation mesh size. Although the method reproduced the laboratory model results quite well, constitutive aspects of the basal surface remained unsolved. Future research will need to incorporate a numerical technique to handle the basal boundary, such as a boundary-fitted coordinate technique.

The nature of microscopic particulates in meteoric and accreted ice from the Vostok (Antarctica) ice core is assessed in conjunction with existing ice-core data to investigate the mechanism by which particulates are incorporated into refrozen lake water. Melted ice samples from a range of ice-core depths were filtered through 0.2 μm polycarbonate membranes, and secondary electron images were collected at ×500 magnification using a scanning electron microscope. Image analysis software was used to characterize the size and shape of particulates. Similar distributions of major-axis lengths, surface areas and shape factors (aspect ratio and compactness) for particulates in all accreted ice samples suggest that a single process may be responsible for incorporating the vast majority of particulates for all depths. Calculation of Stokes settling velocities for particulates of various sizes implies that 98% of particulates observed could ‘float’ to the ice–water interface with upward water velocities of 0.0003 ms–1 where they could be incorporated by growing ice crystals, or by rising frazil ice crystals. The presence of particulates that are expected to sink in the water column (2%) and the uneven distribution of particulates in the ice core further implies that periodic perturbations to the lake’s circulation, involving increased velocities, may have occurred in the past.

The fractionation of major sea-water ions, or deviation in their relative concentrations from Standard Mean Ocean Water ratios, has been frequently observed in sea ice. It is generally thought to be associated with precipitation of solid salts at certain eutectic temperatures. the variability found in bulk sea-ice samples indicates that the fractionation of ions depends on the often unknown thermal history of sea ice, which affects the structure of pore networks and fate of solid salts within them. Here we investigate the distribution of ions in Arctic sea ice that is a few weeks old with a reconstructible thermal history. We separate the centrifugable (interconnected) and entrapped (likely disconnected) contributions to the ice salinity and determine their ion fractionation signatures. the results indicate that differential diffusion of ions, rather than eutectic precipitation of cryohydrates, has led to significant ion fractionation. the finding emphasizes the role of coupled diffusive–convective salt transport through complex pore networks in shaping the biogeochemistry of sea ice.

A model for the anisotropic behaviour of polar ice and the evolution of its strain-induced anisotropy is applied to the flowline between GRIP and GISP2. The linear constitutive law for polycrystalline ice is derived from the uniform-stress model under the assumptions of a linear transversely isotropic behaviour of the ice single crystal and of an orthotropic fabric described by a continuous parameterized orientation-distribution function (ODF). The velocities and fabrics obtained for the observed flowline and bedrock geometry assuming stationary flow, are compared to those measured at the ice-sheet surface and down the two boreholes.

During three summer field seasons (2003, 2005 and 2006) we carried out radio-echo sounding measurements with a 5MHz (central frequency) ice-penetrating radar on McCall Glacier, Arctic Alaska, USA, along the central flowline and 17 cross-profiles. Two-way travel time was, after migration, converted to ice thickness, which, in combination with a recent digital elevation model of the surface of the glaciated area, resulted in a detailed map of the bed topography. This reveals a complex basal topography in the confluence area of the different glacial cirques. The pattern of subglacial water flow following the hydraulic potential gradient was calculated for the whole glacier area and shows a confluence of subglacial water downstream from the confluence of the glacier cirques. From the ice-thickness map the total ice volume was estimated as slightly less than 0.5 km3. Bed reflection power (BRP) was determined for the glacier after correction for ice-thickness dependence. Results reveal a clear relationship between the BRP pattern and basal sliding anomalies along the central flowline.

The energy balance was measured at the ETH/CU research camp, located at the equilibrium-line altitude of the Greenland ice sheet (69°34′N, 49°17′W), in spring 1993. Prior to the onset of melt the latent energy flux is the only energy sink, with an average value of 1.18 MJ m−2d−1. This turbulent transfer of moisture is responsible for an average daily snow sublimation of 5 × 10−4 m. The sensible heat flux (0.91 MJ m−2d−1) is the major energy source, and the net radiation only a minor contributor with a positive balance of 0.12 MJ m−2d−1. The residual of the turbulent fluxes and the net radiation is about 0.14 MJ m−2d−1, which agrees surprisingly well with the in situ ground-heat flux measurements of 0.15 MJ m−2d−1 made at the same location. Assuming a 3°C temperature increase in a global-change scenario, and using the information gained from the energy-balance measurements, a simple calculation showed that 5.4 × 10−2 m w.e. of snow would be lost by sublimation for an area of approximately 400 000 km2. The increased sublimation is due to an increase in the net radiation balance caused by an albedo reduction. This would lead to a total annual mass reduction of 22 km3 w.e. of snow for the entire Greenland ice sheet, which is 4.2% of today’s annual accumulation.

A suite of surface and basal measurements during and after borehole drilling is used to perform in situ investigation of the local basal drainage system and pressure forcing in western Greenland. Drill and borehole water temperature were monitored during borehole drilling, which was performed with dyed hot water. After drilling, borehole water pressure and basal dye concentration were measured concurrently with positions in a GPS strain diamond at the surface. Water pressure exhibited diurnal changes in antiphase with velocity. Dye monitoring in the borehole revealed stagnant basal water for nearly 2 weeks. The interpretation of initial connection to an isolated basal cavity is corroborated by the thermal signature of borehole water during hot water drilling. Measurement-based estimates of cavity size are on the order of cubic meters, and analysis indicates that small changes in its volume could induce the observed pressure variations. It is found that longitudinal coupling effects are unable to force necessary volume changes at the site. Sliding-driven basal cavity opening and elastic uplift from load transfer are plausible mechanisms controlling pressure variations. Elastic uplift requires forcing from a hydraulically connected reach, which observations suggest must be relatively small and in close proximity to the isolated cavity.

We used atmospheric air-temperature data from the Chinese radiosonde network to analyze changes in freezing-level heights (FLHs) during the past 48 years and studied their impacts on the cryosphere. We examined radiosonde time-series data from 92 selected Chinese radiosonde network stations. Generally, FLH exhibited a latitudinal zone, declining from the south. The FLH trend during 1958–2005 showed spatial inhomogeneity, most uniform distributions during autumn, and significant upward trends. Temporal variability of FLH in eastern China was briefly associated with El Niño Southern Oscillation events, but the causes of FLH changes in western China require further investigation. FLH in western and northern China has mostly increased since 1958, and might be considered a possible indicator of cryospheric change during the second half of the 20th century. There were significant correlations between FLH and changes in snow cover, glaciers and permafrost.

Dense snow avalanches are regarded as dry granular flows. This paper presents experimental and numerical modelling of deposition processes occurring when a gravity-driven granular flow meets a fence. A specific experimental device was set up, and a numerical model based on shallow-water theory and including a deposition model was used. Both tools were used to quantify how the retained volume upstream of the fence is influenced by the channel inclination and the obstacle height. We identified two regimes depending on the slope angle. In the slope-angle range where a steady flow is possible, the retained volume has two contributions: deposition along the channel due to the roughness of the bed and deposition due to the fence. The retained volume results only from the fence effects for higher slopes. The effects of slope on the retained volume also showed these two regimes. For low slopes, the retained volume decreases strongly with increasing slope. For higher slopes, the retained volume decreases weakly with increasing slope. Comparison between the experiments and computed data showed good agreement concerning the effect of fence height on the retained volume.

We have drilled 13 boreholes within and around a through-cutting rift on the (unofficially named) Roi Baudouin Ice Shelf, East Antarctica. Logging by optical televiewer (OPTV) combined with core inspection has resulted in the identification and characterization of several material facies. Outside the rift, OPTV-imaged annual layering indicates ~150 years of accumulation over the 66 m length of one of the boreholes. Luminosity analysis of this image also reveals the presence of numerous dark melt layers as well as a systematic decrease in background luminosity, interpreted in terms of a progressive increase in light transmission during firnification. We identify four material facies within the rift: snow, granular ice, marine ice and unconsolidated platelets. We interpret the granular ice facies as snow that has been saturated by percolating sea water, and the underlying marine ice as compacted buoyant platelets that have adhered to the rift base. Core sections reveal the presence of tubular channels within the marine ice, indicating that it is macroporous and permeable to sea water. The lower boundary of this facies merges into a mushy layer of unconsolidated platelets that were successfully imaged by OPTV, revealing irregular sub-horizontal layering similar to that reported previously on the basis of (directional) borehole video.

This paper reviews data on glacier mass balance together with extra metadata on topography and climate to put the data into context. The 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates of global average glacier mass balance may not be much different from simple averages. A more mathematically correct approach is to analyse long and continuous mass-balance series measured in different regions, but there are few long series and they do not cover the globe in any representative way. However, 30 year series from 30 glaciers confirm a recent (1996–2005) trend to very negative mass balance after two decades of nearly zero mass balance. Climate data from a global gridded climatology are applied to datasets for global glacier cover, for 318 glaciers with mass-balance data for at least 1 year and for 30 glaciers with 30 year series of measurements. Results show that mean precipitation is relatively low in the global glacier-cover dataset and much higher for the observed glaciers. This shows that current mass-balance measurements are biased towards wetter conditions than are typical for global glacier cover. We urgently need to find better ways of analysing sparse datasets with ‘complex spatial and temporal patterns’ like the present mass-balance dataset.

This paper discusses the results of a sediment-monitoring programme carried out in connection with hydro-electric power development plans in the river basins surrounding the Jostedalsbreen ice cap in Norway. Whereas the highest suspended-sediment transport rates occur during years with several flash-flood events, the bed load is more dependent upon the duration of large magnitude flood events. Bed-load transport has been obtained from annual measurements of deltaic growth in small lakes at the front of glaciers. During the years 1968–86, the mean ratio of bed load to total load amounted to 0.30–0.50% of the total load, but in years with large magnitude floods this ratio decreased. The mean annual suspended sediment yield of Norwegian glaciers ranges from 100 tonnes km2 a−1 to 1300 tonnes km2 a−1. Valley glaciers cause the highest erosion rates, with the exception of the small cirque glacier, Trollbergdalsbreen, which is thought to be a soft bed glacier. The investigation programme undertaken involved monitoring the volume of suspended sediments, together with the size distribution, mineralogy and shape of grains. In general, the valley glaciers supply more sand than the smaller cirque glaciers, whereas particles in the fine sand and silt-size ranges in almost all of the glaciers are angular in shape. Methods of comparing the abrasive capacity of the sediment load at various intakes in a power plant are discussed. Long-term sediment supply from the glaciers was investigated by studies of varves and rythmites in sediment cores from glacier-fed lakes.

Although changes of surface slope across a subglacial peak can be explained at least semi-quantitatively on a two-dimensional basis in terms of gradients of longitudinal and shear stresses along a flow line, we lack appreciation of flow in the third dimension which may tend to cause lower layers to flow around rather than over a sharp peak. This paper collects and surveys evidence relevant to flow in the third dimension and discusses the processes involved, particularly the evidence from radio-echo layering, and also discusses possible reasons for the lack of radio-echo layers near the base of the Antarctic ice sheet.

Glacial seismicity provides important insights into glacier dynamic processes. We study the temporal distribution of cryogenic seismic signals (icequakes) at Holtedahlfonna, Svalbard, between April and August 2016 using a single three-component sensor. We investigate sources of observed icequakes using polarization analysis and waveform modeling. Processes responsible for five icequake categories are suggested, incorporating observations of previous studies into our interpretation. We infer that the most dominant icequake type is generated by surface crevasse opening through hydrofracturing. Secondly, bursts of high-frequency signals are presumably caused by repeated near-surface crevassing due to high strain rates during glacier fast-flow episodes. Furthermore, signals related to resonance in water-filled cracks, fracturing or settling events in dry firn or snow before the melt season, and processes at the glacier bed are observed. Amplitude of seismic background noise is clearly related to glacier runoff. We process ambient seismic noise to invert horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratios for a sub-surface seismic velocity model used to model icequake signals. Our study shows that a single seismic sensor provides useful information about seasonal ice dynamics in case deployment of a network is not feasible.
