A new method was developed to estimate the mass balance in unsampled areas from existing datasets. Three years of mass-balance data from two glaciers in the central Italian Alps were used to develop and test a multiple-regression method based exclusively on a 10m resolution digital terrain model. The introduction of a relative elevation attribute, which expresses the degree of wind exposure of the gridcells, notably increased the amount of explainable variance in winter balance with respect to altitude itself. The summer balance is highly correlated with elevation, but, in order to obtain reliable extrapolations, the clear-sky shortwave radiation and the diurnal cloud-cover cycle had to be taken into account. The net annual mass balance on a glacier system comprising the two monitored glaciers was calculated by applying both a single regression of winter and summer balance with altitude and the new regression method. The consistency of results was assessed against measured net balances and snow-cover maps drawn in the ablation season. The results of the new method were in close agreement with observations and proved to be less sensitive to the spatial representation of the sampled areas.

Although satellite data are useful for obtaining ice-thickness distribution for perennial sea ice or in stable thin-sea-ice areas, they are still largely an unresolved issue for the seasonal ice zone (SIZ). We address this problem using L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR). In the SIZ, ice-thickness growth is closely related to deformation, so surface roughness is expected to correlate with ice thickness. L-band SAR, suitable for detecting such surface roughness, is a promising tool for obtaining thickness distribution. This idea was supported by an airborne polarimetric and interferometric SAR (Pi-SAR) validation. To extend this result to spaceborne L-band SAR with coarser resolution, we conducted in situ measurements of ice thickness and surface roughness in February 2008 in the southern Sea of Okhotsk with an icebreaker in coordination with the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS)/Phased Array-type L-band SAR (PALSAR) orbit. A helicopter-borne laser profiler was used to improve the estimation of surface roughness. It was found that backscatter coefficients (HH) correlated well with ice thickness (R = 0.86) and surface roughness (R = 0.70), which confirms the possibility of determining ice-thickness distribution in the SIZ. the interannual variation of PALSAR-derived ice-thickness distribution in the southern Sea of Okhotsk is also discussed.

Absorption and fluorescence of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in sea ice and surface waters in the southern Sea of Okhotsk was examined. Sea-water CDOM had featureless absorption increasing exponentially with shorter wavelengths. Sea ice showed distinct absorption peaks in the ultraviolet, especially in younger ice. Older first-year sea ice had relatively flat absorption spectra in the ultraviolet range. Parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) identified five fluorescent CDOM components, two humic-like and three protein-like. Sea water was largely governed by humic-like fluorescence. In sea ice, protein-like fluorescence was found in considerable excess relative to sea water. The accumulation of protein-like CDOM fluorescence in sea ice is likely a result of biological activity within the ice. Nevertheless, sea ice does not contribute excess CDOM during melt, but the material released will be of different composition than that present in the underlying waters. Thus, at least transiently, the CDOM introduced during sea-ice melt might provide a more labile source of fresher protein-like DOM to surface waters in the southern Sea of Okhotsk.

The Chinese First Deep Ice-Core Drilling Project DK-1 has commenced at Kunlun station in the Dome A region, the highest plateau in Antarctica. During the first season, within the 28th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition (CHINARE) 2011/12 the pilot hole was drilled and reamed in order to install a 100 m deep fiberglass casing. In the next season, 29th CHINARE 2012/13, the deep ice-core drilling system was installed, and all the auxiliary equipment was connected and commissioned. After filling the hole with drilling fluid (n-butyl acetate), three runs of ‘wet’ ice-core drilling were carried out and a depth of 131.24 m was reached. Drilling to the bedrock at the target depth of ∼3100 m is planned to be completed during a further four seasons. We describe the work in progress and the status of equipment for the Dome A drilling project.

In contrast to the worldwide intensive warming and consequent glacier shrinkage during the last 30 years, two peculiar phenomena have been observed on the Tibetan Plateau: (1) the temperature has decreased about 0.6˚C on the northern Tibetan Plateau, with smaller than average glacier retreat and meltwater discharge, and (2) a number of glaciers have been advancing on the southeast Tibetan Plateau in response to increased precipitation. These observations indicate the complex nature of the response of glaciers to climate changes.

A high-resolution time-dependent two-dimensional flowline model was developed, which takes into account all relevant stresses (i.e. both shear and longitudinal stresses), and which is solved on a fixed finite-difference grid. Special attention was paid to the computational efficiency. A comparison is made with a similar model that solves the velocity field according to the shallow-ice approximation. Both models were applied to an East Antarctic flowline for which the data on surface and bedrock elevation were sampled at different spatial resolutions. The numerical analysis deals with the importance of longitudinal stresses at the ice-sheet/ice-shelf interface at different grid sizes" and the importance of basal drag vs driving stress in basal sliding laws. At a grid resolution of 5–10 km the force balance indicates that all stress components are of equal importance in an area that is larger than the nominal grid size. When sliding becomes dominant, this transition zone considerably widens. Furthermore, the longitudinal stress deviator is found to vary considerably with depth due to the thermomechanical coupling.

The isotopic composition of Pb and the concentrations of Pb, Ba and Bi wert- measured in selected ice-core samples from Law Dome, East Antarctica, to a depth of 1196 m. The range of concentrat ions found in decontaminated ice was 0.03-1.5 pgg−1 for Pb, 0.9-6.1 pgg−1 for Ba and 0.4 17 fgg −1 for Bi, excluding the deepest sample which contained ~1 pjpm of rock dust. The abundances of all four stable lead isotopes were measured and gave 206Pb/207Pb ratios up to ~1.23. Avalue of 208Pb/207Pb= 2.78 was measured in the deepest sample and is consistent with reported Pb isotope ratios of Antarctic gran-ulites. Although the element concentrations in some samples were lower than have been reported elsewhere, geochemkal and isotopic evidence indicated that a number of samples were contaminated with Pb not present in the original ice. However, it appears that the technical skills now available are approaching the level where careful sample selection, decontamination and analysis can yield accurate results for the concentration and isotopic composition of Pb in Earth's purest naturally occurring ice.

This work is a collection of radar equations for low-frequency radar sounding and radar in general that emphasize the form of the radar equation for different target and source geometries. This is meant as a handbook for scientists and engineers that work with or analyze radar sounder systems and interpret radar sounding echoes. Lookup tables summarize the results and derivations are provided for each equation.

Understanding how ice sheets responded to past climate change is fundamental to forecasting how they will respond in the future. Numerical models calculating the evolution of ice sheets depend upon accumulation data, which are principally available from ice cores. Here, we calculate past rates of ice accumulation using internal layering. The englacial structure of the East Antarctic ice divide at ridge B is extracted from airborne ice-penetrating radar. The isochronous surfaces are dated at their intersection with the Vostok ice-core site, where the depth–age relationship is known. The dated isochrons are used as input to a one-dimensional ice-flow model to investigate the spatial accumulation distribution. The calculations show that ice-accumulation rates generally increase from Vostok lake towards ridge B. The western flank of the ice divide experiences markedly more accumulation than in the east. Further, ice accumulation increases northwards along the ice divide. The results also show the variability of accumulation in time and space around the ridge B ice divide over the last 124 000 years.

Wind-transported snow is a common phenomenon in cold windy areas, creating snowdrifts and contributing significantly to the loading of avalanche release areas. It is therefore necessary to take into account snowdrift formation both in terms of predicting and controlling drift patterns. Particularly in an Alpine context, drifting snow is a nonstationary phenomenon, which has not been taken into account in physical modeling carried out in wind tunnels or in numerical simulations. Only a few studies have been conducted to address the relation between wind gusts and drifting-snow gusts. Consequently, the present study was conducted at the Lac Blanc pass (2700ma.s.l.) experimental site in the French Alps using a snow particle counter and a cup anemometer in order to investigate drifting-snow gusts. First, it was shown that the behavior of the wind gust factor was coherent with previous studies. Then the definition of wind gust factor was extended to a drifting-snow gust factor. Sporadic drifting-snow events were removed from the analysis to avoid artificially high drifting-snow gust factors. Two trends were identified: (1) A high 1 s peak and a mean 10 min drifting-snow gust factor, greater than expected, were observed for events that exhibited a gamma distribution on the particle width histogram. The values of drifting-snow gust factors decreased with increasing gust duration. (2) Small drifting-snow gusts (i.e. smaller than or of the same order of magnitude as wind gusts) were also observed. However, in this case, they were systematically characterized by a snow particle size distribution that differed from the two-parameter gamma probability density function.

The quick growth of depth-hoar crystals was observed at night-time just below the snow surface on a south-facing slope. This growth was due to a high temperature gradient (> 100 K m−1) near the snow surface under clear skies after a thin deposition of new snow on older and denser snow. The temperature gradient was greater when internal melting had taken place during daytime, keeping the sub-surface snow temperature at 0°C even after sunset until all liquid water had frozen. To understand the relationship between the crystal growth rate and the temperature gradient, a series of experiments was carried out in the laboratory. The snow sample was set under a constant temperature gradient between 100 and 300 K m− and sustained for about 50 h. The average crystal size increased linearly with time and the crystal growth rate increased as the given temperature gradient increased. The growth rates were in the order of 10−9 m s−1, which gave a good agreement with the results of the field observation.

Recent observations have revealed that dynamical thickening is dominant in the growth process of Sea ice in the Southern Sea of Okhotsk. That indicates the importance of understanding the nature of thick deformed ice in this area. The objective of the present paper is to establish a Ship-based method for observing the thickness of deformed ice with reasonable accuracy. Since February 2003, one of the authors has engaged in the core Sampling using a Small basket from the icebreaker Soya. Based on these results, we developed a new model which expressed the internal Structure of pack ice in the Southern Sea of Okhotsk, as a one-dimensional multilayered Structure. Since 2004, the electromagnetic (EM) inductive Sounding of Sea-ice thickness has been conducted on board Soya. By combining the model and theoretical calculations, a new algorithm was developed for transforming the output of the EM inductive instrument to ice + Snow thickness (total thickness). Comparison with total thickness by drillhole observations Showed fair agreement. The probability density functions of total thickness in 2004 and 2005 Showed Some difference, which reflected the difference of fractions of thick deformed ice.

In order to improve their hydro-electric power production in the Grimsel area, Kraftwerke Oberhasli (KWO) plan to construct a new reservoir with a storage level about 110 m higher than the existing Grimselsee. This paper deals with the expected changes of Unteraargletscher after periodical contact with the resulting water body. Upon initial flooding, the lowermost section of Unteraargletscher, about 800 m long, will float, drift away, and melt. A rough estimate of the heat balance shows that the energy input into the lake would be sufficient to melt this ice within 2–3 years, so that calving and melting will continue at a frontal ice cliff. The main effort of the study was aimed at forecasting this retreat. A pre-existing seismic survey was supplemented by new soundings by radar and seismic reflection, resulting in reliable cross-sections and information about the sub-bottom material. The forecast is based on the existing mass flux and an empirical calving rate relationship with water depth and predicts an equilibrium position of the terminus some 3–4 km further back than today, and a gain of water storage volume of 50 × 106 m3 after 10 years.

A ground-based radar has been used successfully for monitoring calving events and velocities at Kronebreen, Svalbard, for two test seasons in 2007 and 2008. We use daily terrestrial optical photogrammetry and continuous visual observation to validate the interpretation of a 116 hour ground-based radar amplitude of return signal data recorded from 26 to 30 August 2008. The radar was placed –4 km from the glacier. It measured at high temporal rate (2 Hz) and the antenna lobe covered a width of –700 m of the front. The calving-front geometry was extracted from the optical images, and its effect on radar backscatter, together with the movement of the glacier, was identified in the plot of the amplitude of the radar return signal. Calving events were detected applying an automated change-detection technique to the radar dataset. This technique allowed us to detect 92% of the events that were observed during the same time. In this paper, we focus on the method rather than on data interpretation. However, future use of this method, combined with meteorological data, tides and ocean temperature, will be valuable for calving-process studies.

A series of ice-sheet-model intercomparison exercises have been organized as part of EISMINT. One such set of experiments investigated the implications of thermomechanical coupling on the flow of ice sheets with idealized geometry The results of these experiments are discussed by Payne and others (in press). They indicate that local concentrations of ice flow may develop as a consequence of interactions between ice flow, temperature and viscosity The nature of the intercomparison exercise meant that only a limited number of experiments could be performed by the ten contributing groups. Many of the implications arising from the results could not therefore be investigated. This paper focuses on four. They are the initiation of the patterning, its reversibility the influence of the relationship between ice temperature and viscosity and dependence on numerical time-step and horizontal grid size.

The U.S. Geological Survey is using Landsat imagery from the early 1970s and mid- to late 1980s/early 1990s to analyze glaciological features, compile a glacier inventory, measure surface velocities of outlet glaciers, ice streams and ice shelves, determine coastline change and calculate the area and volume of iceberg calving in Antarctica.

Ice-surface velocities in Marie Byrd and Ellsworth Lands, West Antarctica, range from the fast-moving Thwaites, Pine Island, Land and DeVicq Glaciers to the slower-moving ice shelves. The average ice-front velocity during the time interval of Landsat imagery, for the faster-moving outlet glaciers, was 2.9 km a-1 for Thwaites Glacier, 2.4 km a-1 for Pine Island Glacier, 2.0 km a-1 for Land Glacier and 1.4 km a-1 for DeVicq Glacier.

Evaluation of coastal change from the early 1970s to the early 1990s shows advance of the floating ice front in some coastal areas and recession in others, with an overall small average advance in the entire coastal study area, but no major trend towards advance or retreat. Comparison of average ice-surface velocities with changes in the ice front has yielded estimates of iceberg calving. The total iceberg calving from the Marie Byrd Land and Ellsworth Land coasts during the study period was greater than 8500 km2 (estimated volume of about 2400 km-3) or an average of about 550 km3 a-1 (more than 150 km2 a-1). Almost 70% of this discharge is contributed by Thwaites and Pine Island Glaciers.

The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite’s L-band (1.4 GHz) measurements have been used to retrieve Snow thickness over thick sea Ice in a previous study. Here we consider brightness temperature simulations for 2.5–4.5m thick Arctic multi-year Ice and compare the results of the relatively simple emission model (M2013) used previously for the retrieval with simulations from a more complex model (T2011) that combines a sea-Ice version of the Microwave Emission Model for Layered Snowpacks (MEMLS) with a thermodynamic model. We find that L-band brightness temperature is mainly determined by Ice temperature. In the M2013 model, Ice temperature in turn is mainly determined by surface temperature and Snow thickness, and this dependence has been used previously to explain the potential for a Snow thickness retrieval. Our comparisons suggest that the M2013 retrieval model may benefit from a more sophisticated thermodynamic calculation of the Ice temperature or from using independent temperature data (e.g. from 6 GHz channels). In both models, horizontally polarized brightness temperatures increase with Snow thickness while holding surface temperature, Ice thickness and Snow density near constant. The increase in the T2011 model is steeper than in M2013, suggesting a higher sensitivity to Snow thickness than found earlier.

Continuous good-quality deep ice cores provide excellent scientific data with which to reconstruct a past climate record for >800 ka. At depths starting from ∼100m using an electromechanical drill, a drilling liquid is essential for successful recovery of the very high-quality ice cores demanded by modern scientific analysis techniques (e.g. continuous flow analysis). Finding a suitable drill fluid for use at deep ice-coring drill sites is not an easy task. Temperatures vary greatly not just from site to site, but also at a site where the average mean temperature from surface to bedrock can vary from –55°C to –2.75°C. In the past 60 years, many fluids have been used, with varying degrees of success, but for various reasons are either unavailable, are now considered unsafe and dangerous or are too environmentally damaging to be permitted. Here we report on our pre-season investigation into possible candidate drill fluids, with specific information concerning ESTISOL™ 240 and COASOL™, the rationale behind the redesign of our drill successfully used at NorthGRIP, Greenland, and EPICA DML, Antarctica, the knock-on effect of those changes, and our field experience in Greenland at Flade Isblink in 2006 and at NEEM in 2009–10.

On 1 December 2011 the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Divide ice-core project reached its final depth of 3405 m. The WAIS Divide ice core is not only the longest US ice core to date, but is also the highest-quality deep ice core, including ice from the brittle ice zone, that the US has ever recovered. The methods used at WAIS Divide to handle and log the drilled ice, the procedures used to safely retrograde the ice back to the US National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) and the methods used to process and sample the ice at the NICL are described and discussed.

Two satellite datasets are used to characterize winter landfast first-year sea-ice (FYI), deformed FYI (DFYI) and multiyear sea-ice (MYI) roughness in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA): (1) optical Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) and (2) synthetic aperture radar Sentinel-1. The Normalized Difference Angular Index (NDAI) roughness proxy derived from MISR, and backscatter from Sentinel-1 are intercompared. NDAI and backscatter are also compared to surface roughness derived from an airborne LiDAR track covering a subset of FYI and MYI (no DFYI). Overall, NDAI and backscatter are significantly positively correlated when all ice type samples are considered. When individual ice types are evaluated, NDAI and backscatter are only significantly correlated for DFYI. Both NDAI and backscatter are correlated with LiDAR-derived roughness (r = 0.71 and r = 0.74, respectively). The relationship between NDAI and roughness is greater for MYI than FYI, whereas for backscatter and ice roughness, the relationship is greater for FYI than MYI. Linear regression models are created for the estimation of FYI and MYI roughness from NDAI, and FYI roughness from backscatter. Results suggest that using a combination of Sentinel-1 backscatter for FYI and MISR NDAI for MYI may be optimal for mapping winter sea-ice roughness in the CAA.
