We consider regular variation of a Lévy process X := (Xt)t≥0 in with Lévy measure Π, emphasizing the dependence between jumps of its components. By transforming the one-dimensional marginal Lévy measures to those of a standard 1-stable Lévy process, we decouple the marginal Lévy measures from the dependence structure. The dependence between the jumps is modeled by a so-called Pareto Lévy measure, which is a natural standardization in the context of regular variation. We characterize multivariate regularly variation of X by its one-dimensional marginal Lévy measures and the Pareto Lévy measure. Moreover, we define upper and lower tail dependence coefficients for the Lévy measure, which also apply to the multivariate distributions of the process. Finally, we present graphical tools to visualize the dependence structure in terms of the spectral density and the tail integral for homogeneous and nonhomogeneous Pareto Lévy measures.

In this paper we study a discrete-time optimal switching problem on a finite horizon. The underlying model has a running reward, terminal reward, and signed (positive and negative) switching costs. Using optimal stopping theory for discrete-parameter stochastic processes, we extend a well-known explicit dynamic programming method for computing the value function and the optimal strategy to the case of signed switching costs.

Most work in the theory of dams has dealt with deterministic withdrawals. Some more recent work, begun by Moran (1969), has been devoted to conditionally deterministic withdrawals which depend on the content of the dam, or in some cases on the last input. We consider in this paper an infinite dam fed by discrete additive inputs, under a totally random withdrawal policy. Explicit expressions are obtained for the time-dependent content distributions. Probabilities of emptiness are computed and stationary results are derived.

For a class of cell division processes in the Euclidean space ℝd, spatial consistency is investigated. This addresses the problem whether the distribution of the generated structures, restricted to a bounded set V, depends on the choice of a larger region W ⊃ V where the construction of the cell division process is performed. This can also be understood as the problem of boundary effects in the cell division procedure. It is known that the STIT tessellations are spatially consistent. In the present paper it is shown that, within a reasonable wide class of cell division processes, the STIT tessellations are the only ones that are consistent.

We consider a stochastic control model driven by a fractional Brownian motion. This model is a formal approximation to a queueing network with an ON-OFF input process. We study stochastic control problems associated with the long-run average cost, the infinite-horizon discounted cost, and the finite-horizon cost. In addition, we find a solution to a constrained minimization problem as an application of our solution to the long-run average cost problem. We also establish Abelian limit relationships among the value functions of the above control problems.

We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the asymptotic normality of Nn, the number of records among the first n observations from a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables, with general distribution F. In the case of normality we identify the centering and scaling sequences. Also, we characterize distributions for which the limit is not normal in terms of their discrete and continuous components.

In this paper we study the treewidth of the random geometric graph, obtained by dropping n points onto the square [0,√n]2 and connecting pairs of points by an edge if their distance is at most r=r(n). We prove a conjecture of Mitsche and Perarnau (2014) stating that, with probability going to 1 as n→∞, the treewidth of the random geometric graph is 𝜣(r√n) when lim inf r>rc, where rc is the critical radius for the appearance of the giant component. The proof makes use of a comparison to standard bond percolation and with a little bit of extra work we are also able to show that, with probability tending to 1 as k→∞, the treewidth of the graph we obtain by retaining each edge of the k×k grid with probability p is 𝜣(k) if p>½ and 𝜣(√log k) if p<½.

The principal results of this paper concern the asymptotic behavior of the number of arcs in the optimal routes of first-passage percolation processes on the square lattice. Assuming that the underlying distribution has an atom at zero less than λ–1, where λ is the connectivity constant, Lp and (in some cases) almost sure convergence theorems are proved for the normalized route length processes. The proofs involve the extension of much of the existing theory of first-passage percolation to the case where negative time coordinates are permitted.

In this paper, bounded variation control of one-dimensional diffusion processes is considered. We assume that the agent is allowed to control the diffusion only at the jump times of an observable, independent Poisson process. The agent's objective is to maximize the expected present value of the cumulative payoff generated by the controlled diffusion over its lifetime. We propose a relatively weak set of assumptions on the underlying diffusion and the instantaneous payoff structure, under which we solve the problem in closed form. Moreover, we illustrate the main results with an explicit example.

We derive the large-sample distribution of the number of species in a version of Kingman’s Poisson–Dirichlet model constructed from an $\alpha$ -stable subordinator but with an underlying negative binomial process instead of a Poisson process. Thus it depends on parameters $\alpha\in (0,1)$ from the subordinator and $r>0$ from the negative binomial process. The large-sample distribution of the number of species is derived as sample size $n\to\infty$ . An important component in the derivation is the introduction of a two-parameter version of the Dickman distribution, generalising the existing one-parameter version. Our analysis adds to the range of Poisson–Dirichlet-related distributions available for modeling purposes.

Various types of time and event sampling of a stationary and orderly bivariate point process are considered. Fundamental relations between inter-event intervals and the event counting process are derived. Relations between first forward recurrence times and their moments for different types of sampling are obtained.

Interest has been shown in Markovian sequences of geometric shapes. Mostly the equations for invariant probability measures over shape space are extremely complicated and multidimensional. This paper deals with rectangles which have a simple one-dimensional shape descriptor. We explore the invariant distributions of shape under a variety of randomised rules for splitting the rectangle into two sub-rectangles, with numerous methods for selecting the next shape in sequence. Many explicit results emerge. These help to fill a vacant niche in shape theory, whilst contributing at the same time, new distributions on [0,1] and interesting examples of Markov processes or, in the language of another discipline, of stochastic dynamical systems.

Perturbation analysis is an efficient approach to estimating the sensitivities of the performance measures of a queueing network. A new notion, called the realization probability, provides an alternative way of calculating the sensitivity of the system throughput with respect to mean service times in closed Jackson networks with single class customers and single server nodes (Cao (1987a)). This paper extends the above results to systems with finite buffer sizes. It is proved that in an indecomposable network with finite buffer sizes a perturbation will, with probability 1, be realized or lost. For systems in which no server can directly block more than one server simultaneously, the elasticity of the expected throughput can be expressed in terms of the steady state probability and the realization probability in a simple manner. The elasticity of the throughput when each customer’s service time changes by the same amount can also be calculated. These results provide some theoretical background for perturbation analysis and clarify some important issues in this area.

In this paper we introduce a multilevel birth-death particle system and consider its diffusion approximation which can be characterized as a M([R+)-valued process. The tightness of rescaled processes is proved and we show that the limiting M(R+)-valued process is the unique solution of the M([R+)-valued martingale problem for the limiting generator. We also study the moment structures of the limiting diffusion process.

In [8], Le showed that procrustean mean shapes of samples are consistent estimates of Fréchet means for a class of probability measures in Kendall's shape spaces. In this paper, we investigate the analogous case in Bookstein's shape space for labelled triangles and propose an estimator that is easy to compute and is a consistent estimate of the Fréchet mean, with respect to sinh(δ/√2), of any probability measure for which such a mean exists. Furthermore, for a certain class of probability measures, this estimate also tends almost surely to the Fréchet mean calculated with respect to the Riemannian distance δ.

This work studies the long-term effects of mutation and selection pressures on a diploid population embracing many genetic types. A number of results previously established for the simpler asexual case (see [4]) are extended to the cases of random mating and complete inbreeding (Theorem 1), and then, under particular conditions, to certain circumstances of mixed random mating and inbreeding (Theorem 3 and Corollary 1). Several implications for sex and diploidity are drawn from Theorem 2 and its corollaries. Further biological interpretations of these findings, especially of Theorem 2, are given in [3].

The zonoid of a d-dimensional random vector is used as a tool for measuring linear dependence among its components. A preorder of linear dependence is defined through inclusion of the zonoids. The zonoid of a random vector does not characterize its distribution, but it does characterize the size-biased distribution of its compositional variables. This fact will allow a characterization of our linear dependence order in terms of a linear-convex order for the size-biased compositional variables. In dimension 2 the linear dependence preorder will be shown to be weaker than the concordance order. Some examples related to the Marshall-Olkin distribution and to a copula model will be presented, and a class of measures of linear dependence will be proposed.
