By making use of the geometric properties of simplex shape spaces, this paper investigates the problems relating to the estimation of the Fréchet means of the random shapes of simplices in Euclidean spaces and also, for the random shapes induced by certain normally distributed simplices, the problems relating to the location of these Fréchet means. In particular, we obtain an algorithm for computing sample mean shapes in simplex shape spaces which converges reasonably fast.

A learning matrix is defined by a set of input and output pattern vectors. The entries in these vectors are zeros and ones. The matrix is the maximum of the outer products of the input and output pattern vectors. The entries in the matrix are also zeros and ones. The product of this matrix with a selected input pattern vector defines an activity vector. It is shown that when the patterns are taken to be random, then there are central limit and large deviation theorems for the activity vector. They give conditions for when the activity vector may be used to reconstruct the output pattern vector corresponding to the selected input pattern vector.

Let Xt, be a Markov random field assuming values in RM. Let In be a rectangular box in Zm with its center at 0 and corner points with coordinates ±n. Let (An) be a sequence of measurable subsets of RM such that neighborhood of t) → 0, for n → ∞; and let fn(x) be the indicator of An. Under appropriate conditions on the nearest-neighbor distributions of (Xt), the conditional distribution of given the values of Xs, for s on the boundary of In, converges to the Poisson distribution. An immediate application is an extreme value limit theorem for a real-valued Markov random field.

We consider the application of importance sampling in steady-state simulations of finite Markov chains. We show that, for a large class of performance measures, there is a choice of the alternative transition matrix for which the ratio of the variance of the importance sampling estimator to the variance of the naive simulation estimator converges to zero as the sample path length goes to infinity. Obtaining this ‘optimal’ transition matrix involves computing the performance measure of interest, so the optimal matrix cannot be computed in precisely those situations where simulation is required to estimate steady-state performance. However, our results show that alternative transition matrices of the form Q = P + E/T, where P is the original transition matrix and T is the sample path length, can be expected to provide good results. Moreover, we provide an iterative algorithm for obtaining alternative transition matrices of this form that converge to the optimal matrix as the number of iterations increases, and present an example that shows that spending some computer time iterating this algorithm and then conducting the simulation with the resulting alternative transition matrix may provide considerable variance reduction when compared to naive simulation.

In the two locus theory that has been developed, it has been assumed that amount of recombination between the two loci is the same in both sexes (Bodmer and Felsenstein, (1967); Karlin and Feldman, (1970)). Some results of assuming that the recombination value in males is rm and in females rf are reported here.

We consider M/G/1 queues with exhaustive service and generalized vacations, where at the end of every busy period the server either follows a mixed vacation policy from a given vacation policy set or stays idle. A simple recursive formula for the moments of the stationary waiting time is provided. This formula results in the decomposition property for our model immediately. It also enables us to derive many existing results for the M/G/1 queues with various vacation policies.

The continuum random cluster model is a Gibbs modification of the standard Boolean model with intensity z > 0 and law of radii Q. The formal unnormalised density is given by q N cc , where q is a fixed parameter and N cc is the number of connected components in the random structure. We prove for a large class of parameters that percolation occurs for large enough z and does not occur for small enough z. We provide an application to the phase transition of the Widom–Rowlinson model with random radii. Our main tools are stochastic domination properties, a detailed study of the interaction of the model, and a Fortuin–Kasteleyn representation.

Particles enter a state space at random times. Each particle travels in the space independent of the other particles until its death. Functionals of the particle system are studied with strong laws and central limit theorems being obtained.

‘Divide and conquer’ is a traditional approach in various fields of applied mathematics. In reliability, only modules have been proposed to decompose complex coherent systems. However, a system may include no modules, except ‘trivial’ ones. This paper is the second step of a study concerned with module generalizations : in the first step, pseudo-modules have been retained as the most general coherent subsystems which can yield a complete extension of the fundamental results concerning modules; in addition, it has been proved that they concern any binary coherent system; in this paper, it is shown that pseudo-modular decompositions are the most general coherent decompositions which can yield a complete extension of all the ‘refined bounds’ for the interval reliability and the availability currently proposed in terms of modular decompositions.

This study also yields some fundamental results to extend all the ‘refined bounds’ currently proposed for multistate coherent systems, using an easier approach.

We are interested in a large queue in a GI/G/k queue with heterogeneous servers. For this, we consider tail asymptotics and weak limit approximations for the stationary distribution of its queue length process in continuous time under a stability condition. Here, two weak limit approximations are considered. One is when the variances of the interarrival and/or service times are bounded, and the other is when they become large. Both require a heavy-traffic condition. Tail asymptotics and heavy-traffic approximations have been separately studied in the literature. We develop a unified approach based on a martingale produced by a good test function for a Markov process to answer both problems.

We consider a system with Poisson arrivals and independent and identically distributed service times, where requests in the system are served according to the state-dependent (Cohen's generalized) processor-sharing discipline, where each request receives a service capacity that depends on the actual number of requests in the system. For this system, we derive expressions as well as tight insensitive upper bounds for the moments of the conditional sojourn time of a request with given required service time. The bounds generalize and extend corresponding results, recently given for the single-server processor-sharing system in Cheung et al. (2006) and for the state-dependent processor-sharing system with exponential service times by the authors (2008). Analogous results hold for the waiting times. Numerical examples for the M/M/m-PS and M/D/m-PS systems illustrate the given bounds.

In this paper we consider linear functions constructed on two different weighted branching processes and provide explicit bounds for their Kantorovich–Rubinstein distance in terms of couplings of their corresponding generic branching vectors. Motivated by applications to the analysis of random graphs, we also consider a variation of the weighted branching process where the generic branching vector has a different dependence structure from the usual one. By applying the bounds to sequences of weighted branching processes, we derive sufficient conditions for the convergence in the Kantorovich–Rubinstein distance of linear functions. We focus on the case where the limits are endogenous fixed points of suitable smoothing transformations.

This paper is devoted to probabilistic cellular automata (PCAs) on N,Z or Z / nZ, depending on two neighbors with a general alphabet E (finite or infinite, discrete or not). We study the following question: under which conditions does a PCA possess a Markov chain as an invariant distribution? Previous results in the literature give some conditions on the transition matrix (for positive rate PCAs) when the alphabet E is finite. Here we obtain conditions on the transition kernel of a PCA with a general alphabet E. In particular, we show that the existence of an invariant Markov chain is equivalent to the existence of a solution to a cubic integral equation. One of the difficulties in passing from a finite alphabet to a general alphabet comes from the problem of measurability, and a large part of this work is devoted to clarifying these issues.

At each point of a Poisson point process of intensity λ in the hyperbolic plane, center a ball of bounded random radius. Consider the probability Pr that, from a fixed point, there is some direction in which one can reach distance r without hitting any ball. It is known (see Benjamini, Jonasson, Schramm and Tykesson (2009)) that if λ is strictly smaller than a critical intensity λgv thenPr does not go to 0 as r → ∞. The main result in this note shows that in the case λ=λgv, the probability of reaching a distance larger than r decays essentially polynomially, while if λ>λgv, the decay is exponential. We also extend these results to various related models and we finally obtain asymptotic results in several situations.

A result relating the probability that kth customer finds the system empty to the distribution of the number of customers served in a busy period, for an M/M/1 queue, has been obtained. This relationship is similar to the relationship between the probability that the queue is empty at time t and the distribution of the length of the busy period.

Dimension reduction of multivariate data was developed by Y. Guan for point processes with Gaussian random fields as covariates. The generalization to fibre and surface processes is straightforward. In inverse regression methods, we suggest slicing based on geometrical marks. An investigation of the properties of this method is presented in simulation studies of random marked sets. In a refined model for dimension reduction, the second-order central subspace is analyzed in detail. A real data pattern is tested for independence of a covariate.

Dependence between coordinate extremes is a key factor in any multivariate risk assessment. Hence, it is of interest to know whether the components of a given multivariate random vector exhibit asymptotic independence or asymptotic dependence. In the latter case the structure of the asymptotic dependence has to be clarified. In the multivariate setting it is common to have an explicit form of the density rather than the distribution function. In this paper we therefore give criteria for asymptotic dependence in terms of the density. We consider distributions with light tails and restrict attention to continuous unimodal densities defined on the whole space or on an open convex cone. For simplicity, the density is assumed to be homothetic: all level sets have the same shape. Balkema and Nolde (2010) contains conditions on the shape which guarantee asymptotic independence. The situation for asymptotic dependence, treated in the present paper, is more delicate.

The theory of geometric probabilities is concerned with randomly generated geometric objects. The aim is to compute probabilities of certain geometric events or distributions of random variables defined in a geometric way. Very often the computation even of simple expectations is too difficult, and one has to be satisfied with establishing estimates and, if possible, sharp inequalities. In geometric probabilities, convex sets play a prominent role, since often the convexity assumptions simplify the situation considerably. Extremal problems for geometric probabilities involving convex bodies can sometimes be attacked successfully by using suitable integral-geometric transformations and then applying classical inequalities from the geometry of convex bodies, or known methods for obtaining such inequalities. Examples of such results are the topic of this paper.

In this paper we uniformly approximate the trajectories of the Cox–Ingersoll–Ross (CIR) process. At a sequence of random times the approximate trajectories will be even exact. In between, the approximation will be uniformly close to the exact trajectory. From a conceptual point of view, the proposed method gives a better quality of approximation in a path-wise sense than standard, or even exact, simulation of the CIR dynamics at some deterministic time grid.
