We study the dynamical Borel–Cantelli lemma for recurrence sets in a measure-preserving dynamical system $(X, \mu , T)$ with a compatible metric d. We prove that under some regularity conditions, the $\mu $ -measure of the following set

We show that the ergodic integrals for the horocycle flow on the two-torus associated by Giulietti and Liverani with an Anosov diffeomorphism either grow linearly or are bounded; in other words, there are no deviations. For this, we use the topological invariance of the Artin–Mazur zeta function to exclude resonances outside the open unit disc. Transfer operators acting on suitable spaces of anisotropic distributions and their Ruelle determinants are the key tools used in the proof. As a bonus, we show that for any $C^\infty $ Anosov diffeomorphism F on the two-torus, the correlations for the measure of maximal entropy and $C^\infty $ observables decay with a rate strictly smaller than $e^{-h_{\mathrm {top}}(F)}$ . We compare our results with very recent related work of Forni.

Let G be a Lie group, let $\Gamma \subset G$ be a discrete subgroup, let $X=G/\Gamma $ and let f be an affine map from X to itself. We give conditions on a submanifold Z of X that guarantee that the set of points $x\in X$ with f-trajectories avoiding Z is hyperplane absolute winning (a property which implies full Hausdorff dimension and is stable under countable intersections). A similar result is proved for one-parameter actions on X. This has applications in constructing exceptional geodesics on locally symmetric spaces and in non-density of the set of values of certain functions at integer points.

We bound the number of distinct minimal subsystems of a given transitive subshift of linear complexity, continuing work of Ormes and Pavlov [On the complexity function for sequences which are not uniformly recurrent. Dynamical Systems and Random Processes (Contemporary Mathematics, 736). American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 2019, pp. 125--137]. We also bound the number of generic measures such a subshift can support based on its complexity function. Our measure-theoretic bounds generalize those of Boshernitzan [A unique ergodicity of minimal symbolic flows with linear block growth. J. Anal. Math.44(1) (1984), 77–96] and are closely related to those of Cyr and Kra [Counting generic measures for a subshift of linear growth. J. Eur. Math. Soc.21(2) (2019), 355–380].

We show that every countable group with infinite finite conjugacy (FC)-center has the Schmidt property, that is, admits a free, ergodic, measure-preserving action on a standard probability space such that the full group of the associated orbit equivalence relation contains a non-trivial central sequence. As a consequence, every countable, inner amenable group with property (T) has the Schmidt property.

It is shown that for a dense $G_\delta $ -subset of the subgroup of non-singular transformations (of a standard infinite $\sigma $ -finite measure space) whose Poisson suspensions are non-singular, the corresponding Poisson suspensions are ergodic and of Krieger’s type III1.

In this paper we study a Fermi–Ulam model where a pingpong ball bounces elastically against a periodically oscillating platform in a gravity field. We assume that the platform motion $f(t)$ is 1-periodic and piecewise $C^3$ with a singularity, $\dot {f}(0+)\ne \dot {f}(1-)$ . If the second derivative $\ddot {f}(t)$ of the platform motion is either always positive or always less than $-g$ , where g is the gravitational constant, then the escaping orbits constitute a null set and the system is recurrent. However, under these assumptions, escaping orbits co-exist with bounded orbits at arbitrarily high energy levels.

We show that the dynamical degree of an (i.i.d) random sequence of dominant, rational self-maps on projective space is almost surely constant. We then apply this result to height growth and height counting problems in random orbits.

It is proved that each Gaussian cocycle over a mildly mixing Gaussian transformation is either a Gaussian coboundary or sharply weak mixing. The class of non-singular infinite direct products T of transformations $T_n$ , $n\in \mathbb N$ , of finite type is studied. It is shown that if $T_n$ is mildly mixing, $n\in \mathbb N$ , the sequence of Radon–Nikodym derivatives of $T_n$ is asymptotically translation quasi-invariant and T is conservative then the Maharam extension of T is sharply weak mixing. This technique provides a new approach to the non-singular Gaussian transformations studied recently by Arano, Isono and Marrakchi.

Let $\phi :X\to X$ be a homeomorphism of a compact metric space X. For any continuous function $F:X\to \mathbb {R}$ there is a one-parameter group $\alpha ^{F}$ of automorphisms (or a flow) on the crossed product $C^*$ -algebra $C(X)\rtimes _{\phi }\mathbb {Z}$ defined such that $\alpha ^{F}_{t}(fU)=fUe^{-itF}$ when $f \in C(X)$ and U is the canonical unitary in the construction of the crossed product. In this paper we study the Kubo--Martin--Schwinger (KMS) states for these flows by developing an intimate relation to the ergodic theory of non-singular transformations and show that the structure of KMS states can be very rich and complicated. Our results are complete concerning the set of possible inverse temperatures; in particular, we show that when $C(X) \rtimes _{\phi } \mathbb Z$ is simple this set is either $\{0\}$ or the whole line $\mathbb R$ .

Let f be a $C^2$ diffeomorphism on a compact manifold. Ledrappier and Young introduced entropies along unstable foliations for an ergodic measure $\mu $ . We relate those entropies to covering numbers in order to give a new upper bound on the metric entropy of $\mu $ in terms of Lyapunov exponents and topological entropy or volume growth of sub-manifolds. We also discuss extensions to the $C^{1+\alpha },\,\alpha>0$ , case.

We study Kakutani equivalence for products of some special flows over rotations with roof function smooth except a singularity at $0\in \mathbb {T}$ . We estimate the Kakutani invariant for products of these flows with different powers of singularities and rotations from a full measure set. As a corollary, we obtain a countable family of pairwise non-Kakutani equivalent products of special flows over rotations.

This paper is a continuation of the paper, Matsumoto [‘Subshifts, $\lambda $ -graph bisystems and $C^*$ -algebras’, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 485 (2020), 123843]. A $\lambda $ -graph bisystem consists of a pair of two labeled Bratteli diagrams satisfying a certain compatibility condition on their edge labeling. For any two-sided subshift $\Lambda $ , there exists a $\lambda $ -graph bisystem satisfying a special property called the follower–predecessor compatibility condition. We construct an AF-algebra ${\mathcal {F}}_{\mathcal {L}}$ with shift automorphism $\rho _{\mathcal {L}}$ from a $\lambda $ -graph bisystem $({\mathcal {L}}^-,{\mathcal {L}}^+)$ , and define a $C^*$ -algebra ${\mathcal R}_{\mathcal {L}}$ by the crossed product . It is a two-sided subshift analogue of asymptotic Ruelle algebras constructed from Smale spaces. If $\lambda $ -graph bisystems come from two-sided subshifts, these $C^*$ -algebras are proved to be invariant under topological conjugacy of the underlying subshifts. We present a simplicity condition of the $C^*$ -algebra ${\mathcal R}_{\mathcal {L}}$ and the K-theory formulas of the $C^*$ -algebras ${\mathcal {F}}_{\mathcal {L}}$ and ${\mathcal R}_{\mathcal {L}}$ . The K-group for the AF-algebra ${\mathcal {F}}_{\mathcal {L}}$ is regarded as a two-sided extension of the dimension group of subshifts.

Let $(X,T)$ be a topological dynamical system. Given a continuous vector-valued function $F \in C(X, \mathbb {R}^{d})$ called a potential, we define its rotation set $R(F)$ as the set of integrals of F with respect to all T-invariant probability measures, which is a convex body of $\mathbb {R}^{d}$ . In this paper we study the geometry of rotation sets. We prove that if T is a non-uniquely ergodic topological dynamical system with a dense set of periodic measures, then the map $R(\cdot )$ is open with respect to the uniform topologies. As a consequence, we obtain that the rotation set of a generic potential is strictly convex and has $C^{1}$ boundary. Furthermore, we prove that the map $R(\cdot )$ is surjective, extending a result of Kucherenko and Wolf.

For random piecewise linear systems T of the interval that are expanding on average we construct explicitly the density functions of absolutely continuous T-invariant measures. If the random system uses only expanding maps our procedure produces all invariant densities of the system. Examples include random tent maps, random W-shaped maps, random $\beta $ -transformations and random Lüroth maps with a hole.

If $\mathcal {A}$ is a finite set (alphabet), the shift dynamical system consists of the space $\mathcal {A}^{\mathbb {N}}$ of sequences with entries in $\mathcal {A}$ , along with the left shift operator S. Closed S-invariant subsets are called subshifts and arise naturally as encodings of other systems. In this paper, we study the number of ergodic measures for transitive subshifts under a condition (‘regular bispecial condition’) on the possible extensions of words in the associated language. Our main result shows that under this condition, the subshift can support at most $({K+1})/{2}$ ergodic measures, where K is the limiting value of $p(n+1)-p(n)$ , and p is the complexity function of the language. As a consequence, we answer a question of Boshernitzan from 1984, providing a combinatorial proof for the bound on the number of ergodic measures for interval exchange transformations.

For arbitrary closed countable subsets Z of the unit circle examples of topologically mixing operators on Hilbert spaces are given which have a densely spanning set of eigenvectors with unimodular eigenvalues restricted to Z. In particular, these operators cannot be ergodic in the Gaussian sense.

We prove the logarithmic Sarnak conjecture for sequences of subquadratic word growth. In particular, we show that the Liouville function has at least quadratically many sign patterns. We deduce the main theorem from a variant which bounds the correlations between multiplicative functions and sequences with subquadratically many words which occur with positive logarithmic density. This allows us to actually prove that our multiplicative functions do not locally correlate with sequences of subquadratic word growth. We also prove a conditional result which shows that if the ( $\kappa -1$ )-Fourier uniformity conjecture holds then the Liouville function does not correlate with sequences with $O(n^{t-\varepsilon })$ many words of length n where $t = \kappa (\kappa +1)/2$ . We prove a variant of the $1$ -Fourier uniformity conjecture where the frequencies are restricted to any set of box dimension less than $1$ .

We introduce the notion of balanced strong shift equivalence between square non-negative integer matrices, and show that two finite graphs with no sinks are one-sided eventually conjugate if and only if their adjacency matrices are conjugate to balanced strong shift equivalent matrices. Moreover, we show that such graphs are eventually conjugate if and only if one can be reached by the other via a sequence of out-splits and balanced in-splits, the latter move being a variation of the classical in-split move introduced by Williams in his study of shifts of finite type. We also relate one-sided eventual conjugacies to certain block maps on the finite paths of the graphs. These characterizations emphasize that eventual conjugacy is the one-sided analog of two-sided conjugacy.

We show that the uniform measure-theoretic ergodic decomposition of a countable Borel equivalence relation $(X, E)$ may be realized as the topological ergodic decomposition of a continuous action of a countable group $\Gamma \curvearrowright X$ generating E. We then apply this to the study of the cardinal algebra $\mathcal {K}(E)$ of equidecomposition types of Borel sets with respect to a compressible countable Borel equivalence relation $(X, E)$ . We also make some general observations regarding quotient topologies on topological ergodic decompositions, with an application to weak equivalence of measure-preserving actions.
