Let $\mathfrak {F}_n$ be the set of all cuspidal automorphic representations $\pi$ of $\mathrm {GL}_n$ with unitary central character over a number field $F$. We prove the first unconditional zero density estimate for the set $\mathcal {S}=\{L(s,\pi \times \pi ')\colon \pi \in \mathfrak {F}_n\}$ of Rankin–Selberg $L$-functions, where $\pi '\in \mathfrak {F}_{n'}$ is fixed. We use this density estimate to establish: (i) a hybrid-aspect subconvexity bound at $s=\frac {1}{2}$ for almost all $L(s,\pi \times \pi ')\in \mathcal {S}$; (ii) a strong on-average form of effective multiplicity one for almost all $\pi \in \mathfrak {F}_n$; and (iii) a positive level of distribution for $L(s,\pi \times \widetilde {\pi })$, in the sense of Bombieri–Vinogradov, for each $\pi \in \mathfrak {F}_n$.

We prove the existence of $\mathrm {GSpin}_{2n}$-valued Galois representations corresponding to cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations of certain quasi-split forms of ${\mathrm {GSO}}_{2n}$ under the local hypotheses that there is a Steinberg component and that the archimedean parameters are regular for the standard representation. This is based on the cohomology of Shimura varieties of abelian type, of type $D^{\mathbb {H}}$, arising from forms of ${\mathrm {GSO}}_{2n}$. As an application, under similar hypotheses, we compute automorphic multiplicities, prove meromorphic continuation of (half) spin L-functions and improve on the construction of ${\mathrm {SO}}_{2n}$-valued Galois representations by removing the outer automorphism ambiguity.

In earlier work, the first named author generalized the construction of Darmon-style $\mathcal {L}$-invariants to cuspidal automorphic representations of semisimple groups of higher rank, which are cohomological with respect to the trivial coefficient system and Steinberg at a fixed prime. In this paper, assuming that the Archimedean component of the group has discrete series we show that these automorphic $\mathcal {L}$-invariants can be computed in terms of derivatives of Hecke eigenvalues in $p$-adic families. Our proof is novel even in the case of modular forms, which was established by Bertolini, Darmon and Iovita. The main new technical ingredient is the Koszul resolution of locally analytic principal series representations by Kohlhaase and Schraen. As an application of our results we settle a conjecture of Spieß: we show that automorphic $\mathcal {L}$-invariants of Hilbert modular forms of parallel weight $2$ are independent of the sign character used to define them. Moreover, we show that they are invariant under Jacquet–Langlands transfer and, in fact, equal to the Fontaine–Mazur $\mathcal {L}$-invariant of the associated Galois representation. Under mild assumptions, we also prove the equality of automorphic and Fontaine–Mazur $\mathcal {L}$-invariants for representations of definite unitary groups of arbitrary rank. Finally, we study the case of Bianchi modular forms to show how our methods, given precise results on eigenvarieties, can also work in the absence of discrete series representations.

We consider the problem of defining an action of Hecke operators on the coherent cohomology of certain integral models of Shimura varieties. We formulate a general conjecture describing which Hecke operators should act integrally and solve the conjecture in certain cases. As a consequence, we obtain p-adic estimates of Satake parameters of certain nonregular self-dual automorphic representations of $\mathrm {GL}_n$ .

We use the endoscopic classification of automorphic representations of even-dimensional unitary groups to construct level-raising congruences.

Let $n$ be either $2$ or an odd integer greater than $1$, and fix a prime $p>2(n+1)$. Under standard ‘adequate image’ assumptions, we show that the set of components of $n$-dimensional $p$-adic potentially semistable local Galois deformation rings that are seen by potentially automorphic compatible systems of polarizable Galois representations over some CM field is independent of the particular global situation. We also (under the same assumption on $n$) improve on the main potential automorphy result of Barnet-Lamb et al. [Potential automorphy and change of weight, Ann. of Math. (2) 179(2) (2014), 501–609], replacing ‘potentially diagonalizable’ by ‘potentially globally realizable’.

We prove that the complete $L$-function associated to any cuspidal automorphic representation of $\operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ has infinitely many simple zeros.

Conditionally on the generalized Lindelöf hypothesis, we obtain an asymptotic for the fourth moment of Hecke–Maass cusp forms of large Laplacian eigenvalue for the full modular group. This lends support to the random wave conjecture.

Let $M\,=\,\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{{{r}_{1}}}}\,\times \,\cdots \,\times \,\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{{{r}_{k}}}}\,\subseteq \,\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{r}}$ be a Levi subgroup of $\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{r}}$, where $r\,=\,{{r}_{1}}+\cdots +{{r}_{k}}$, and $\widetilde{M}$ its metaplectic preimage in the $n$-fold metaplectic cover $\widetilde{\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{r}}}$ of $\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{r}}$. For automorphic representations ${{\pi }_{1}},\ldots ,{{\pi }_{k}}$ of ${{\widetilde{\text{GL}}}_{{{r}_{1}}}}\left( \mathbb{A} \right),\ldots ,{{\widetilde{\text{GL}}}_{{{r}_{k}}}}\left( \mathbb{A} \right)$, we construct (under a certain technical assumption that is always satisfied when $n\,=\,2$) an automorphic representation $\pi $ of $\widetilde{M}\left( \mathbb{A} \right)$ that can be considered as the “tensor product” of the representations ${{\pi }_{1}},\ldots ,{{\pi }_{k}}$. This is the global analogue of the metaplectic tensor product defined by P. Mezo in the sense that locally at each place $v,\,{{\pi }_{v}}$ is equivalent to the local metaplectic tensor product of ${{\text{ }\!\!\pi\!\!\text{ }}_{1,\,v}},\ldots ,{{\text{ }\!\!\pi\!\!\text{ }}_{k,\,v}}$ defined by Mezo. Then we show that if all of the ${{\text{ }\!\!\pi\!\!\text{ }}_{i}}$ are cuspidal (resp. square-integrable modulo center), then the metaplectic tensor product is cuspidal (resp. square-integrable modulo center). We also show that (both locally and globally) the metaplectic tensor product behaves in the expected way under the action of a Weyl group element and show the compatibility with parabolic inductions.

We apply the endoscopic classification of automorphic forms on $U(3)$ to study the growth of the first Betti number of congruence covers of a Picard modular surface. As a consequence, we establish a case of a conjecture of Sarnak and Xue on cohomology growth.

Let $p\gt 2$ be prime. We state and prove (under mild hypotheses on the residual representation) a geometric refinement of the Breuil–Mézard conjecture for two-dimensional mod $p$ representations of the absolute Galois group of ${ \mathbb{Q} }_{p} $. We also state a conjectural generalization to $n$-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of an arbitrary finite extension of ${ \mathbb{Q} }_{p} $, and give a conditional proof of this conjecture, subject to a certain $R= \mathbb{T} $-type theorem together with a strong version of the weight part of Serre’s conjecture for rank $n$ unitary groups. We deduce an unconditional result in the case of two-dimensional potentially Barsotti–Tate representations.

We give an explicit construction of the cusp eigenforms on an elliptic curve defined over a finite field, using the theory of Hall algebras and the Langlands correspondence for function fields and ${\mathrm{GL} }_{n} $. As a consequence we obtain a description of the Hall algebra of an elliptic curve as an infinite tensor product of simpler algebras. We prove that all these algebras are specializations of a universal spherical Hall algebra (as defined and studied by Burban and Schiffmann  [On the Hall algebra of an elliptic curve I, Preprint (2005), arXiv:math/0505148 [math.AG]] and Schiffmann and Vasserot [The elliptic Hall algebra, Cherednik Hecke algebras and Macdonald polynomials, Compositio Math. 147 (2011), 188–234]).

We prove a nonvanishing result for families of $\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{n}}\times \text{G}{{\text{L}}_{n}}$ Rankin–Selberg $L$-functions in the critical strip, as one factor runs over twists by Hecke characters. As an application, we simplify the proof, due to Luo, Rudnick, and Sarnak, of the best known bounds towards the Generalized Ramanujan Conjecture at the infinite places for cusp forms on $\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{n}}$. A key ingredient is the regularization of the units in residue classes by the use of an Arakelov ray class group.

Let R be a complete rank-1 valuation ring of mixed characteristic (0, p), and let K be its field of fractions. A g-dimensional truncated Barsotti–Tate group G of level n over R is said to have a level-n canonical subgroup if there is a K-subgroup of G ⊗RK with geometric structure (Z/pnZ)g consisting of points ‘closest to zero’. We give a non-trivial condition on the Hasse invariant of G that guarantees the existence of the canonical subgroup, analogous to a result of Katz and Lubin for elliptic curves. The bound is independent of the height and dimension of G.

Let E/ℚ be an elliptic curve and let D<0 be a sufficiently large fundamental discriminant. If contains Heegner points of discriminant D, those points generate a subgroup of rank at least |D|δ, where δ>0 is an absolute constant. This result is compatible with the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture.

We generalize the method of A. R. Booker (Poles of Artin L-functions and the strong Artin conjecture, Ann. of Math. (2) 158 (2003), 1089–1098; MR 2031863(2004k:11082)) to prove a version of the converse theorem of Jacquet and Langlands with relaxed conditions on the twists by ramified idèle class characters.

This paper provides congruences between unstable and stable automorphic forms for the symplectic similitude group GSp(4). More precisely, we raise the level of certain CAP representations Π arising from classical modular forms. We first transfer Π to π on a suitable inner form G; this is achieved by θ-lifting. For π, we prove a precise level-raising result that is inspired by the work of Bellaiche and Clozel and which relies on computations of Schmidt. We thus obtain a congruent to π, with a local component that is irreducibly induced from an unramified twist of the Steinberg representation of the Klingen parabolic. To transfer back to GSp(4), we use Arthur’s stable trace formula. Since has a local component of the above type, all endoscopic error terms vanish. Indeed, by results due to Weissauer, we only need to show that such a component does not participate in the θ-correspondence with any GO(4); this is an exercise in using Kudla’s filtration of the Jacquet modules of the Weil representation. We therefore obtain a cuspidal automorphic representation of GSp(4), congruent to Π, which is neither CAP nor endoscopic. It is crucial for our application that we can arrange for to have vectors fixed by the non-special maximal compact subgroups at all primes dividing N. Since G is necessarily ramified at some prime r, we have to show a non-special analogue of the fundamental lemma at r. Finally, we give an application of our main result to the Bloch–Kato conjecture, assuming a conjecture of Skinner and Urban on the rank of the monodromy operators at the primes dividing N.

In this paper, we prove that the first occurrence of global theta liftings from any orthogonal group to either symplectic groups or metaplectic groups can be characterized completely in terms of the location of poles of certain Eisenstein series. This extends the work of Kudla and Rallis and the work of Moeglin to all orthogonal groups. As applications, we obtain results about basic structures of cuspidal automorphic representations and the domain of holomorphy of twisted standard L-functions.

We prove the modularity of minimally ramified ordinary residually reducible p-adic Galois representations of an imaginary quadratic field F under certain assumptions. We first exhibit conditions under which the residual representation is unique up to isomorphism. Then we prove the existence of deformations arising from cuspforms on GL2(AF) via the Galois representations constructed by Taylor et al. We establish a sufficient condition (in terms of the non-existence of certain field extensions which in many cases can be reduced to a condition on an L-value) for the universal deformation ring to be a discrete valuation ring and in that case we prove an R=T theorem. We also study reducible deformations and show that no minimal characteristic 0 reducible deformation exists.

We prove that, for any prime ℓ and any even integer n, there are infinitely many exponents k for which appears as a Galois group over . This generalizes a result of Wiese from 2006, which inspired this paper.
