An old question of Arhangel’skii asks if the Menger property of a Tychonoff space X is preserved by homeomorphisms of the space $C_p(X)$ of continuous real-valued functions on X endowed with the pointwise topology. We provide affirmative answer in the case of linear homeomorphisms. To this end, we develop a method of studying invariants of linear homeomorphisms of function spaces $C_p(X)$ by looking at the way X is positioned in its (Čech–Stone) compactification.

Let $\alpha < \omega _1$ be a prime component, and let $X$ and $Y$ be metric spaces. In [8], it was shown that if $C_p(X)$ and $C_p(Y)$ are linearly homeomorphic, then the scattered heights $\kappa (X)$ and $\kappa (Y)$ of $X$ and $Y$ satisfy $\kappa (X) \leq \alpha $ if and only if $\kappa (Y) \leq \alpha $. We will prove that this also holds if $C_p^*(X)$ and $C_p^*(Y)$ are linearly homeomorphic and that these results do not hold for arbitrary Tychonov spaces. We will also prove that if $C_p^*(X)$ and $C_p^*(Y)$ are linearly homeomorphic, then $\kappa (X) < \alpha $ if and only if $\kappa (Y) < \alpha $, which was shown in [9] for $\alpha = \omega $. This last statement is not always true for linearly homeomorphic $C_p(X)$ and $C_p(Y)$. We will show that if $\alpha = \omega ^{\mu }$ where $\mu < \omega _1$ is a successor ordinal, it is true, but for all other prime components, this is not the case. Finally, we will prove that if $C_p^*(X)$ and $C_p^*(Y)$ are linearly homeomorphic, then $X$ is scattered if and only if $Y$ is scattered. This result does not directly follow from the above results. We will clarify why the results for linearly homeomorphic spaces $C_p^*(X)$ and $C_p^*(Y)$ do require a different and more complex approach than the one that was used for linearly homeomorphic spaces $C_p(X)$ and $C_p(Y)$.

The homotopy theory of gauge groups has received considerable attention in recent decades. In this work, we study the homotopy theory of gauge groups over some high-dimensional manifolds. To be more specific, we study gauge groups of bundles over (n − 1)-connected closed 2n-manifolds, the classification of which was determined by Wall and Freedman in the combinatorial category. We also investigate the gauge groups of the total manifolds of sphere bundles based on the classical work of James and Whitehead. Furthermore, other types of 2n-manifolds are also considered. In all the cases, we show various homotopy decompositions of gauge groups. The methods are combinations of manifold topology and various techniques in homotopy theory.

Let A = C(X) ⊗ K(H), where X is a compact Hausdorff space and K(H) is the algebra of compact operators on a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. Let A s be the algebra of strong*-continuous functions from X to K(H). Then A s /A is the inner corona algebra of A. We show that if X has no isolated points, then A s /A is an essential ideal of the corona algebra of A, and Prim(A s /A), the primitive ideal space of A s /A, is not weakly Lindelof. If X is also first countable, then there is a natural injection from the power set of X to the lattice of closed ideals of A s /A. If X = βℕ\ℕ and the continuum hypothesis (CH) is assumed, then the corona algebra of A is a proper subalgebra of the multiplier algebra of A s /A. Several of the results are obtained in the more general setting of C 0(X)-algebras.

Given an integer $n\,\ge \,3$, a metrizable compact topological $n$-manifold $X$ with boundary, and a finite positive Borel measure $\mu$ on $X$, we prove that for the typical homeomorphism $f:\,X\,\to \,X$, it is true that for $\mu$-almost every point $x$ in $X$ the restriction of $f$ (respectively of ${{f}^{-1}}$) to the omega limit set $\omega \left( f,\,x \right)$ (respectively to the alpha limit set $\alpha \left( f,\,x \right)$) is topologically conjugate to the universal odometer.

Given an integer $n\,\ge \,3$, a metrizable compact topological $n$-manifold $X$ with boundary, and a finite positive Borel measure $\mu $ on $X$, we prove that for the typical homeomorphism $f\,:\,X\,\to \,X$, it is true that for $\mu $-almost every point $x$ in $X$ the limit set $\omega (f,\,x)$ is a Cantor set of Hausdorff dimension zero, each point of $\omega (f,\,x)$ has a dense orbit in $\omega (f,\,x)$, $f$ is non-sensitive at each point of $\omega (f,\,x)$, and the function $a\,\to \,\omega (f,\,a)$ is continuous at $x$.

It is shown that the dual of the space Cp(I) of all real-valued continuous functions on the closed unit interval with the pointwise topology, when equipped with the Mackey topology, is a non K-analytic but weakly analytic locally convex space.

This paper characterizes the K-analyticity-framedness in ℝX for Cp(X) (the space of real-valued continuous functions on X with pointwise topology) in terms of Cp(X). This is used to extend Tkachuk’s result about the K-analyticity of spaces Cp(X) and to supplement the Arkhangel ′skiĭ–Calbrix characterization of σ-compact cosmic spaces. A partial answer to an Arkhangel ′skiĭ–Calbrix problem is also provided.

Certain generalized Samelson products of SO(3) are calculated and applications to the homotopy of gauge groups are given.

We show that there exists a locally compact separable metrizable space $L$ such that $C_{0}(L)$, the Banach space of all continuous complex-valued functions vanishing at infinity with the supremum norm, is almost transitive. Due to a result of Greim and Rajagopalan [3], this implies the existence of a locally compact Hausdorff space $\tilde L$ such that $C_{0}(\tilde L)$ is transitive, disproving a conjecture of Wood [9]. We totally owe our construction to a topological characterization due to Sánches [8].

It is proved that the duality map $\langle\,,\rangle:(\ell^\infty,\hbox{weak})\times((\ell^\infty)^*,\hbox{weak}^* )\longrightarrow {\bf R}$ is not Borel. More generally, the evaluation $e:(C(K),\wk)\times K\longrightarrow{\bf R}$, $e(f,x) = f(x)$, is not Borel for any function space $C(K)$ on a compact $F$-space. It is also shown that a non-coincidence of norm-Borel and weak-Borel sets in a function space does not imply that the duality map is non-Borel.

Let X and Y be Tychonov spaces and suppose there exists a continuous linear bijection from Cp(X)to CP(Y). In this paper we develop a method that enables us to compare the Lindelöf number of Y with the Lindelöf number of some dense subset Z of X. As a corollary we get that if for perfect spaces X and Y, CP(X) and Cp(Y)are linearly homeomorphic, then the Lindelöf numbers of Jf and Fare equal. Another result in this paper is the following. Let X and Y be any two linearly ordered perfect Tychonov spaces such that Cp(X)and Cp(Y)are linearly homeomorphic. Let be a topological property that is closed hereditary, closed under taking countable unions and closed under taking continuous images. Then X has isproperty if and only if Y has. As examples of such properties we consider certain cardinal functions.

Let C,D,D* be, respectively, the complex plane, {z ∈ C : |z| < 1}, and D — {0}. If P1(C) is the Riemann sphere, the Big Picard theorem states that if ƒ:D* → P1(C) is holomorphic and P1(C) → ƒ(D*) n a s more than two elements, then ƒ has a holomorphic extension . Under certain assumptions on M, A and X ⊂ Y, combined efforts of Kiernan, Kobayashi and Kwack extended the theorem to all holomorphic ƒ: M → A → X. Relying on these results, measure theoretic theorems of Lelong and Wirtinger, and other properties of complex spaces, Noguchi proved in this context that if ƒ: M → A → X and ƒn: M → A → X are holomorphic for each n and ƒn → ƒ, then . In this paper we show that all of these theorems may be significantly generalized and improved by purely topological methods. We also apply our results to present a topological generalization of a classical theorem of Vitali from one variable complex function theory.

This presentation concerns the relation of chain conditions on a space X, with the weights of compact sets in Cp(X), generalizing up to the class of dσ-bounded spaces, or stable spaces. In the last case, stronger results are obtained for Corson compact subsets of CP(X).

Let X be a complete metric space. Viewing continuous real functions on X as closed subsets of X × R, equipped with Hausdorff distance, we show that C(X, R) is completely metrizable provided X is complete and sigma compact. Following the Bulgarian school of constructive approximation theory, a bounded discontinuous function may be identified with its completed graph, the set of points between the upper and lower envelopes of the function. We show that the space of completed graphs, too, is completely metrizable, provided X is locally connected as well as sigma compact and complete. In the process, when X is a Polish space, we provide a simple answer to the following foundational question: which subsets of X × R arise as completed graphs?

Let 〈X, dx〉 and 〈Y, dY〉 be metric spaces and let hp denote Hausdorff distance in X x Y induced by the metric p on X x Y given by p[(x1, y1), (x2, y2)] = max ﹛dx(x1, x2),dY(y1, y2)﹜- Using the fact that hp when restricted to the uniformly continuous functions from X to Y induces the topology of uniform convergence, we exhibit a natural compactness criterion for C(X, Y) when X is compact and Y is complete.

Let C(X, Y) denote the set of continuous functions from a metric space X to a metric space Y. Viewing elements of C(X, Y) as closed subsets of X × Y, we say {fn} converges topologically to f if Li fn = Lsfn = f. If X is connected, then topological convergence in C(X,R) does not imply pointwise convergence, but if X is locally connected and Y is locally compact, then topological convergence in C(X, Y) is equivalent to uniform convergence on compact subsets of X. Pathological aspects of topological convergence for seemingly nice spaces are also presented, along with a positive Baire category result.

Let X and Y be metric spaces. This paper considers the relationship between uniform convergence in C(X, Y) and topological convergence of functions in C(X, Y), viewed as subsets of X×Y. In general, uniform convergence in C(X, Y) implies Hausdorff metric convergence which, in turn, implies topological convergence, but if X and Y are compact, then all three notions are equivalent. If C([0, 1], Y) is nontrivial arid topological convergence in C(X, Y) implies uniform converger ce then X is compact. Theorem: Let X be compact and Y be loyally compact but noncompact. Then topological convergence in C(X, Y) implies uniform convergence if and only if X has finitely many components. We also sharpen a related result of Naimpally.
