There has been increasing interest in so-called phononic materials, which can support surface modes known as surface phonon polaritons, consisting of electromagnetic waves coupled to lattice vibrations at the surface of a polar material. While such excitations have a variety of desirable features, they are limited to the spectral range between a material's longitudinal and transverse optical phonon frequencies. In this work, we demonstrate that for materials whose free-carrier concentrations can be controlled, hybrid plasmonic/phononic modes can be supported across a range of frequencies including those generally forbidden by purely phononic materials.

This work reports the growth of crystalline SrHf x Ti1−x O3 (SHTO) films on Ge (001) substrates by atomic layer deposition. Samples were prepared with different Hf content x to explore if strain, from tensile (x = 0) to compressive (x = 1), affected film crystallization temperature and how composition affected properties. Amorphous films grew at 225 °C and crystallized into epitaxial layers at annealing temperatures that varied monotonically with composition from ~530 °C (x = 0) to ~660 °C (x = 1). Transmission electron microscopy revealed abrupt interfaces. Electrical measurements revealed 0.1 A/cm2 leakage current at 1 MV/cm for x = 0.55.

Thermal conductivity of single-crystal boron-doped diamond (BDD) was studied in comparison with high-quality pure IIa-type diamond in the temperature range from 20 to 400 K. Boron content in BDD was about 1019 cm−3 that is a typical value of p+ substrates used for power device applications. The thermal conductivity of BDD is about 10 times less than that of IIa diamond near 100 K, but above room temperature the difference is <30%. The observed deviation mostly takes place due to acoustic phonon scattering on extended structural defects occurring in synthetic diamond at high boron content.

Nanostructured cerium oxide (CeO2) with outstanding physical and chemical properties has attracted extensive interests over the past few decades in environment and energy-related applications. With controllable synthesis of nanostructured CeO2, much more features were technologically brought out from defect chemistry to structure-derived effects. This review highlights recent progress on the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured ceria-based materials as well as the traditional and new applications. Specifically, several typical applications based on the desired ceria nanostructures are focused to showcase the importance of nanostructure-derived effects. Moreover, some challenges and perspectives on the nanostructured ceria are presented, such as defects controlling and retainment, scale-up fabrication, and monolithic devices. Hopefully, this review can provide an improved understanding of nanostructured CeO2 and offer new opportunities to promote the further research and applications in the future.

Transparent high refractive index materials are of the central importance for the development of metasurface in visible range. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been considered as a perfect candidate due to its wide band gap and high refractive index. However, till now, it is still quite challenging to fabricate high-quality TiO2 films with high refractive indices and low losses. Here we demonstrate the fabrication of high-quality TiO2 film using an electron-beam evaporation method. We show that the post-annealing conditions play key roles in the microstructure crystallographic and the optical refractive index of the TiO2 films. A predominately oriented TiO2 film has been achieved by annealing at 700 °C in oxygen ambient. The refractive index is as high as 2.4, and the corresponding loss is negligible at 632 nm. Further studies on dielectric antennas show that our TiO2 film can be an ideal platform to fabricate metasurface in visible frequency range. We believe that our research will be important for the advances of all-dielectric metasurfaces.

Multiferroic nanostructures have been attracting tremendous attention not only for novel phenomena associated with fundamental physics, but also due to exciting application potentials in future nanoelectronic devices. In this mini-review, we first introduce several fabrication techniques recently developed for single phase and composite multiferroic nanostructures. Then, the topologic vortex domain structures in various ferroic nanostructures, which may bring about additional fundamental discoveries and applications in ultrahigh density recording, are discussed. Particular attention is paid to magnetoelectric effects in multiferroic nanodots, including room temperature electric field induced magnetic domain switching. Finally, existing challenges and new directions, e.g., cross-couplings among multiple functionalities, are prospected. We genuinely hope that this mini-review will arouse the readers' interest in this fascinating field.

Epitaxial heterostructures composed of complex oxides have fascinated researchers for over a decade as they offer multiple degrees of freedom to unveil emergent many-body phenomena often unattainable in bulk. Recently, apart from stabilizing such artificial structures along the conventional [001]-direction, tuning the growth direction along unconventional crystallographic axes has been highlighted as a promising route to realize novel quantum many-body phases. Here we illustrate this rapidly developing field of geometrical lattice engineering with the emphasis on a few prototypical examples of the recent experimental efforts to design complex oxide heterostructures along the (111) orientation for quantum phase discovery and potential applications.

Low-propagation-loss silicon wire waveguides are key components of optical integrated circuits. In this paper, we clarified, through assessment of the relationship between waveguide loss and fabrication technology that high-resolution lithography and an adjusted lithography process window are important for low-loss waveguides. The silicon wire waveguides fabricated by high-resolution lithography technology using ArF immersion lithography process showed world-record low propagation losses of 0.40 dB/cm for the C-band and 1.28 dB/cm for the O-band. Analysis with Barwicz and Haus's theory indicated that sidewall scattering is the main cause of propagation loss even in such low-loss waveguides.

Silver nanowire-based contacts represent one of the major new directions in transparent contacts for opto-electronic devices with the added advantage that they can have Indium-Tin-Oxide-like properties at substantially reduced processing temperatures and without the use of vacuum-based processing. However, nanowires alone often do not adhere well to the substrate or other film interfaces; even after a relatively high-temperature anneal and unencapsulated nanowires show environmental degradation at high temperature and humidity. Here we report on the development of ZnO/Ag-nanowire composites that have sheet resistance below 10 Ω/sq and >90% transmittance from a solution-based process with process temperatures below 200 °C. These films have significant applications potential in photovoltaics and displays.

The field of nanophotonics has experienced a dramatic development in recent years, which requires ample candidate structures to achieve desirable functionalities. For many novel device designs in emerging field of transformation optics, optical metamaterials, and others, non-uniform and non-conformal thin films as well as three-dimensional (3D) structures are necessary to achieve advanced functionalities. Here, we report several techniques utilizing angled physical vapor deposition to obtain unique and complex 3D structures such as films with tapered thickness on planar substrates, tapered or uniform films on curved surfaces, and 3D nanorod arrays. These structures could enrich the existing practical design space for applications in nanophotonics and nanoelectronics.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) efficiently generate electricity, but high operating temperatures (T op > 800 °C) limit their utility. Reducing T op requires mixed ion–electron conducting (MIEC) cathode materials. Density functional theory is used here to investigate the role of potassium substitutions in the MIEC material Sr1−x K x FeO3 (SKFO). We predict that such substitutions are endothermic. SrFeO3 and SKFO have nearly identical metallic electronic structures. Oxygen vacancy formation energies decrease by ~0.2 eV when x K increases from 0 to 0.0625. SKFO is a promising SOFC MIEC cathode material; however, further experimental investigations must assess its long-term stability at the desired operating temperatures.

In nanocrystalline (nc) metals, it is still not clear how local grain boundary (GB) structures accommodate GB migration at atomic scales and what dominates the motion of atoms at the inherently unstable GB front. Here, we report the adjustment of the local GB structures at atomic scales during self-driven GB migration, simultaneously involving GB dissociation, partial dislocation emission from GB, and faceting/defaceting in the nc Cu. Furthermore, we reveal that the fundamental of GB migration ability is closely related to the local structure, i.e. the GB segment consisting of “hybrid” structural units and delocalized GB dislocations is relatively unstable.

We analyze the effect of functionalization in the surface of zinc oxide crystal structure by 3-mercaptopropionic acid. X-ray powder diffraction data and extended x-ray absorption fine structure studies confirms a wurtzite structure. However, the morphology of the surface seems to be reduced and shows a film-like surface as demonstrated by x-ray absorption near edge structure and scanning electron microscopy. As a result of surface functionalization, the energy levels of the semiconductor were shifted toward reductive potentials (by 50 mV) as determined by diffuse reflectance and cyclic voltammetry.

We analyze the optical properties of composite materials that combine nanowire and nanolayer platforms. We revisit effective-medium theory (EMT) description of wire materials with high filling fraction positioned in anisotropic unit cells and present a simple numerical technique to extend Maxwell–Garnett formalism in this limit. We also demonstrate that the resulting EMT can be combined with transfer-matrix technique to adequately describe photonic band gap behavior, previously observed in epitaxially grown semiconductor multilayer nanowires.

Beta-gallium oxide (β-Ga2O3) is of increasing interest to the optoelectronic community for transparent conductor and power electronic applications. Considerable variability exists in the literature on the growth and doping of Ga2O3 films, especially as a function of growth approach, temperature, and oxygen partial pressure. Here pulsed laser deposition (PLD) was used to grow high-quality β-Ga2O3 films on (0001) sapphire and (−201) Ga2O3 single crystals and to explore the growth, stability, and dopability of these films as function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure. There is a strong temperature dependence to the phase formation, morphology, and electronic properties of β-Ga2O3 from 350 to 550 °C.

Multifunctional, complex oxides capable of exhibiting highly-coupled electrical, mechanical, thermal, and magnetic susceptibilities have been pursued to address a range of salient technological challenges. Today, efforts are focused on addressing the pressing needs of a range of applications and identifying, understanding, and controlling materials with the potential for enhanced or novel responses. In this prospective, we highlight important developments in theoretical and computational techniques, materials synthesis, and characterization techniques. We explore how these new approaches could revolutionize our ability to discover, probe, and engineer these materials and provide a context for new arenas where these materials might make an impact.

Oxygen vacancies have a significant impact on the structure and electrical/magnetic properties of doped manganites. Magnetic La0.5Sr0.5MnO3 (LSMO) films were epitaxial grown on (001) SrTiO3 substrate by pulsed laser deposition. Structural studies from the x-ray diffraction suggest that the as-grown films are fully constrained by the substrate with the thickness ranging from 8 to 40 nm. By examining the valence of Mn by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we find the ratio of Mn4+/Mn3+ increases along with the increased film thickness, which implies that the oxygen vacancies concentration induced by tensile strain correspondingly decreases. Therefore, the magnetization of LSMO is depressed with the exchange bias effect arising, and the electrical conductivity decreases significantly. This work builds a bridge between modulation of electric/magnetic properties and epitaxial strain in LSMO films.

Mesocrystal—a new class of crystals compared with conventional single crystals and randomly distributed nanocrystal systems—has captured significant attention in recent decades. Current studies have been focused on the advanced synthesis as well as the intriguing properties of mesocrystal. In order to create new opportunities upon functional mesocrystals, they can be regarded as a new functional entirety when integrated with unique matrix environments. The elegant combination of mesocrystals and matrices has enabled researchers to realize enthralling tunabilities and to derive new functionalities that cannot be found in individual components. Therefore, mesocrystal-embedded system forms a new playground towards multifunctionalities. This review article delivers a general roadmap that portrays the enhancement of intrinsic properties and new functionalities driven by novel mesocrystal-embedded oxide systems. An in-depth understanding and breakthroughs achieved in mesocrystal-embedded oxide systems are highlighted. This article concludes with a brief discussion on potential directions and perspectives along this research field.

The local-density approximation (LDA)-1/2 technique has been successfully applied to surmount current limitations in density-functional theory to determine excited-states properties of solids via LDAs to the exchange-correlation functional. The main task to properly apply this technique is to choose the “cut-off” radius to truncate the long-ranged self-energy function, originated by the procedure of removing the spurious self-energy of electrons (and/or holes). The usual procedure is by choosing an extreme of the variation of the band gap as a function of this cutoff. This work examines the relationship between that cut-off parameter and the electronegativity difference between cation and anion in binary compounds calculated self-consistently with LDA-1/2.

In this work, we developed a convenient way to immobilize silver nanoparticles on the aminated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous mats by combing the electrospinning technology from complex-containing polymer solution, amination of PAN nanofibrous and electroless plating technique. The resultant composite nanaofibrous mats had been characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometer, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectra analysis. The catalytic activity and stability of these resultant composite nanofibrous mats for the catalytic reactions, including reduction of 4-nitrophenol to form 4-aminophenol, and selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol, were investigated. The resultant nanofibrous mats exhibited high-efficiency, convenient separation, recovery, and cyclic utilization properties.
