In Offb 11.4 werden die beiden ‘apokalyptischen Zeugen' mit den zwei Ölbäumen gleichgesetzt, die laut Sach 4.11–14 rechts und links vor dem ‘Herrn der Erde’ stehen. In auffallender Parallelität fordern die Söhne Zebedäi die Plätze zur Rechten und zur Linken des Erhöhten (Mk 10.37, cf. Mt 20.21). Die Vollmacht der Zeugen, Feinde mit Feuer zu strafen (Offb 11.5) erinnert an den entsprechenden Wunsch der Zebedaiden in Lk 9.54. Und die Anspielungen auf Mose und Elia (Offb 11.6) beruhen offenbar auf der Verklärungsgeschichte (Mt 17.1–9 parr.), in der Johannes und Jakobus den beiden alttestamentlichen Gestalten gegenber–stehen. Daher scheint Offb 11.3–13 jene frühchristlichen Nachrichten zu bestätigen, denen zufolge der Apostel Johannes ebenso wie sein Bruder den Märtyrertod erlitten hat.

Der siebte matthäische Weheruf gegen ‘Schriftgelehrte und Pharisäer’ (Mt 23.32–6), der zu Jesu Wehklage über Jerusalem (23.37–9), seinem Auszug aus dem Tempel (24.1) und der Ankündigung der Tempelzerstörung (24.2) überleitet, vermittelt eine polemisch geprägte christliche Auβenansicht der Ereignisse des Jahres 70 n.Chr. Vom Blickwinkel der Rabbinen her, die dieselben Ereignisse auf derselben biblischen Grundlage reflektieren, wird die Besonderheit der matthäischen Deutung ebenso sichtbar wie ihre Verwurzelung in jüdisch-schriftgelehrtem Denken. Insbesondere die rabbinische Aggada vom Blut des Sacharja läβt erkennen, daβ sich die Mt-Redaktion einer beiden Parteien gemeinsamen ‘Familiensprache’ bedient, die in der Forschung noch keineswegs hinreichend entschlüsselt ist.

This study proposes a re-examination of the teaching of Jesus about showing love toward enemies, with a view to recovering if possible its historical background and original setting. As a first step to such recovery it appears necessary to consider numerous issues raised by form-critics and others regarding the present framework of the two compilations of sayings in which this teaching is preserved, namely the Matthean ‘Sermon on the Mount’ and its shorter Lukan counterpart, the ‘Sermon on the Plain’.

Picking up on the revived interest in the Song of Songs in biblical scholarship, the article focuses on the significance of the Song in the tradition of Jesus’ teachings. After a survey of rabbinic midrash on the Song, five examples show that Jesus as remembered in the gospel tradition expresses an unusual interest in the Song with a discreet mystical emphasis. The nuptial Christology that subsequently surfaces in Revelation and in Hippolytus and Origen suggests a continuous development as from the Jesus tradition. This continuity may explain the remarkable parallels between the interest of the Church Fathers in the Song and that of the Rabbis.

Traditionally, Pauline exegesis has tended to reduce the Judaism which the apostle encounters in his argumentation to a legalist and particularistic religion; a religion from which Paul would have distanced himself, inventing a Christianity of universal grace in his critique of the Torah. If the New Perspective on Paul allowed us to correct this legalistic reduction of Second Temple Judaism, by highlighting the dimension of election with the foundation of the covenant of Israel, the instigators of this exegetical programme have, however, assented to the hypothesis of a supersession of Jewish particularism by Christian universalism. Hence the critique voiced on this issue by the adherents of what is now called the Radical New Perspective. We are especially indebted to Denise Kimber Buell and Caroline Johnson Hodge for this wave of protest, for both authors identify the use of an ‘ethnic reasoning’ in the Pauline reworking of the Gentiles’ identity. While this critique deserves to be heard, the thesis of a logic of ethnicity and kinship at work under the pen of the apostle cannot be ratified without discussion, since it is not consistent with a rigorous examination of the letter to the Galatians. In that context, indeed, the discourse of identity is not mainly ethnic but anthropological and cosmological, since the believers – Jews quite as much as Gentiles – through baptism have to become not a ‘new people’ but rather a ‘new creation’ (Gal 6.15).

The endings of Pauline letters have been studied as providing clues to the letters' contents. The text of 2 Corinthians is no exception. But what constitutes the ending of that text, and is there more than one letter-ending in it? Rhetorical criticism provides some criteria for attempts to answer those questions, and has sometimes been claimed as providing evidence for the unity of 2 Corinthians. This article reviews that evidence and questions its reliability. The possibility that there may be more than one letter-ending points to a different solution and exposes important features of the text's composition.

This article identifies a structural and conceptual chiasm within the description of Jesus' death and resurrection in Acts 2.23b-24, which helps to account for the distinctive elements of the passage.

‘Der Träger des gemeindeleitenden Amtes herrscht nicht über die Gemeindeglieder, sondern begegnet ihnen dienend in der Haltung geschwisterlicher Solidarität.’ Diese Aussage Roloffs charakterisiert die Gemeindeleitung in den Pastoralbriefen (Past) einseitig als Dienst. Immerhin hält Roloff es aber für angeraten, den Gedanken der Herrschaft explizit zurückzuweisen. Hierin deutet sich m.E. an, dass das Verständnis der Gemeindeleitung in den Past tatsächlich zwischen den Polen von Herrschaft und Dienst oszilliert. Dieses Phänomen möchte ich anhand eines zentralen Aspektes der Gemeindeleitung beleuchten: des Lehrens.

Wie konnte ein inhaltlich jüdisches Gebet ohne exklusiv christliche Anteile zum Zentralgebet der Christen werden? Mit der Suche nach den Gründen der Durchsetzung wird oft die Frage nach der Urheberschaft Jesu verbunden. Der Versuch einer Antwort mit Hilfe der Analyse des Inhaltes führt zu widersprüchlichen Ergebnissen. Sicher greifbar ist dagegen das Phänomen der frühen und unumstrittenen Akzeptanz des Vaterunsers, hier nimmt die vorliegende Untersuchung ihren Ausgang.

Entscheidend für die Durchsetzung des Vaterunsers war weniger sein Inhalt als seine Funktion. Durch seine schon in den Evangelien grundgelegte Kennzeichnung als ‘Gebet des κυριος’ wirkte das Vaterunser nach innen integrierend und nach außen abgrenzend. Eine weitere Christianisierung seines Inhaltes erübrigte sich. Daraus ergeben sich neue Perspektiven auf das Herkunftsproblem.

This paper addresses certain aspects of the opening passage of Revelation which have received little attention in recent years: the central role ascribed to John and the multiple characterisations of his work. These aspects are analysed in the context of the metatextual character of the passage. Moreover, these verses probably were not composed by the author himself, but rather by an editor/redactor who belonged to the Johannine circle, as can be shown through linguistic data and thematic analogies. The editor authorises John's work and thereby the critical view towards the Empire contained in the book itself – an attitude which stands in opposition to the one commonly adopted by Christians at the time.

The perfect tense-form verb ἀναβέβηκεν in John 3.13 is usually interpreted in light of traditional verb theory, as a ‘past action with present results’. This interpretation introduces an apparent problematic chronology in that the Son of Man ascends before descending; however, recent developments in Greek grammar, particularly verbal aspect theory, provide a viable solution to this grammatical ‘problem’ and indicate that the Son of Man's descent precedes his ascent.

In an earlier article, ‘The Johannine Origins of the Johannine Logos’, I proposed that the prevailing explanations of the background and origin of the celebrated Logos concept/title of the Gospel of John are misguided in their attempts to trace the title to some extraneous source. I argued, rather, that the development of the christological title Logos had a beginning, middle, and end, and that this may be demonstrated from the Gospel and First Epistle themselves. Crucial to my argument was the chronological ordering of the three documents: the Gospel of John ‘proper’ (John 1.19–20.31), the First Epistle, and then the substance of the Prologue (John 1.1–18). The thesis itself, more specifically, was that (1) λóγoς and ρημα were employed in the Gospel ‘proper’ with a demonstrably ‘christological transparency’, (2) λóγoς was employed with a quasi-titular force in the first verses of 1 John, and (3) λóγoς reflects a full-fledged christological title in the Prologue material, which was composed still later. At the end of that article I suggested that a similar development could be traced in the case of the Johannine term αρχη´ – immediately related to λóγoς in the very first line of the Gospel – and that, if so, this would surely enhance my argument concerning λóγoς. Here I attempt to make the argument for a similar christological development of the Johannine αρχη´. Even aside from its relevance for my thesis about λóγoς, the prominent and recurring αρχη´ justifies the attention. And it does confront us, after all, with the majestic phrase with which the Gospel opens: ‘In the beginning’.

Die Berührungspunkte zwischen den zwei Wundergeschichten Mt 8.5–13 (über den Hauptmann in Kafarnaum) und 15.21–8 (über die kanaanäische Frau) einerseits und dem Herrenwort Lk 4.25–7 (über die Witwe in Sarepta und den Syrer Naaman) andererseits sind so auffällig, daß eine bisher geheime Beziehung zwischen den Matthäustexten und dem Lukastext anzunehmen ist. Genauer: die matthäische Redaktion der zwei Wundergeschichten dürfte von Lk 4.25–7 abhängig sein. Daraus folgt, daß die Zwei-Quellen-Theorie zur Entstehung der synoptischen Evangelien modifiziert werden muß; denn laut dieser Theorie sollte die Gestaltung zweier Matthäustexte nicht vom lukanischen Sondergut (Lk 4.25–7) beeinflußt sein. Wahrscheinlich hat Matthäus das ganze Lukasevangelium gekannt und gelegentlich benutzt. In seiner Illustration des Spruches Lk 4.25–7 durch das Erzählungspaar Mt 8.5–13; 15.21–8 erweist sich Matthäus aber theologisch enger mit Paulus als mit Lukas verwandt.

Quel est le genre rhétorique du discours devant l'Aréopage (Ac 17.22–31)? Après avoir examiné et évalué les propositions précédentes en la matière, on est amené à y reconnaître le genre démonstratif, et particulièrement celui de l'éloge divin, dont ce discours partage les traits essentiels. Une lecture détaillée du discours selon les élements de sa dispositio permet alors de comprendre la portée des arguments et la pertinence d'un tel genre en un tel lieu.
