This paper presents the results of laser-produced plasma investigations at an intensity of 1014W/cm2. Shadowgraphy, interferometry and second harmonic emission measurements were done to evaluate the main hydrodynamic parameters of the plasma.

The main goals of the German program are the study of key issues of inertial fusion with intense beams of heavy ions. The completion of the new heavy-ion synchrotron and storage ring facility SIS/ESR at GSI opens new directions for experimental investigations on beam dynamics at high intensity and on beam/target interaction. In addition, new accelerator scenarios will be investigated based on non-Liouvillean beam-handling techniques.

Starting from the Riemann-Silberstein formulation of classical electrodynamics the Schrödinger equation for the photon energy wave function is discussed. Hereafter, a propagator description of the space-time emission of a polychromatic photon from an atom is presented, paying particular attention to the near-field electrodynamics. When the atom is embedded in a solid-state plasma the photon emission process can be dramatically modified. Limiting the analyses to solid-state plasmas exhibiting translational and rotational symmetry, the near-field atom-photon-plasma interaction is studied paying particular attention to the plasmariton and plasmon excitation processes. It is shown that the transverse and longitudinal parts of the plasma-screened field propagator link in a direct manner to the free-photon propagator and the longitudinal near-field photon propagator. The necessity of keeping both the transverse and longitudinal parts of the plasma screening in a rigorous description of near-field electrodynamics is demonstrated.

Analytical study of the linear stability of one-dimensional double layers in nonmagnetized plasmas based on the solution of the Vlasov–Poisson system is presented. Electromagnetic effects are not included. A self-consistent equilibrium electrostatic potential Φ0(z) that monotonically increases from a low level at z = − ∞ to a high level at z = + ∞ is assumed. We model this potential as a piecewise continuous function of z and we assume that Φ0(z) has constant values for − ∞ z ≤ 0 and L ≤ z < ∞, L being the thickness of the double layer. The BGK states for the Vlasov–Poisson system provide an explicit expression for the velocity distribution of the reflected electrons required for the particular double layer configuration. The stability of the double layers is studied via the linearized Vlasov and Poisson equations using the WKB approximation.

Thermal energy transport in laser-irradiated glass microshells coated with polystyrene/metal layers seems to be dominated by hot spots. These are connected with filaments which are enhanced by hydrodynamic instability of the Rayleigh-Taylor type.

The Precision Phebus program, started in 1993, emphasizes a series of laser and target experiment objectives on the two-beam Phebus Nd-phosphate glass laser. Recently, three major objectives that are also very important issues for megajoule-class lasers have been met: First, the balance of the incident beam-to-beam 3ω power is shown to be in the range from 5 to 12% for 3-ns, 3ω-shaped pulses of reproducible high-energy shots; second, the smoothing uniformity of the laser energy deposited on the target, that is, the contrast of the spatial beam modulations, can be kept lower than 5%; and, finally, the tight control of the beam targeting leads to a pointing precision of less than 10 μrd on the target at the target chamber center (TCC) and of 80 μrd on X-ray sources located up to 3 cm from the TCC to improve the space- and time-resolved X-ray shadowgraphy techniques performed for target physics experiments such as implosion and hydrodynamical instability studies.

The time-resolved X-ray emission recorded from a plasma produced by a Nd laser at high intensity (>1014 W/cm2) shows successive bursts. They are correlated with the pulsation of the back-scattered second harmonic spectrum obtained during the same shot. Both results show that the plasmons resonantly excited at the critical surface by the laser waves can undergo quasiperiodically the collapse process.

A study of the effects of photoionization of a laser-produced plasma has been carried out by modeling the fluorescence of resonance lines due to cascades. The photoionization source is the X-ray M-band emission of a laser-produced high-Z plasma and it perturbs a ground state He-like aluminum plasma. Simulations have been performed to study the conditions necessary to maximize the fluorescence and guide future experiments. A collisional-radiative model is used to determine the optimal temperature and density of the pumped plasma, while hydrodynamic models are used to produce realistic plasma gradients and explore the optimum time delay of the photopumping.

We use an Eulerian Vlasov code to study the efficient ion acceleration in dense targets by the ponderomotive force of a high-intensity circularly polarized laser beam, normally incident on a dense plasma. The code solves the one-dimensional relativistic Vlasov–Maxwell equations for both electrons and ions. We follow in details the mechanism of formation and evolution of a double-layer structure, where electrons are pushed steadily in the forward direction by the ponderomotive force of the laser beam, trapping an ion population, while an induced space charge electric field pulls ions behind them, forming a double-layer structure supported by the strong ponderomotive pressure of the intense laser beam. We consider the case of a high-density deuterium plasma with n/ncr = 100, where ncr is the critical density. Three cases are studied, by varying the width of the dense target and the intensity of the laser beam (with the normalized vector potential or quiver momentum a0 = 50 and a0 = 100), to follow the physical processes involved in the ion acceleration and the final formation of a neutral plasma jet ejected from the back of the target. We follow the transition from a situation where the laser pulse radiation pressure is acting on the double layer in the target, to a situation where below a given thickness a fraction of the laser energy is transmitted through the target. The absence of noise in the Eulerian Vlasov code allows us to follow accurately the evolution of the phase-space structures of the distribution functions.

The intrinsically nonperturbative “vacuum persistence probability” P for e + e− production in the overlap region of a pair of high-intensity lasers is estimated in the context of three models, each of which adapt and simplify the exact Fradkin representation for the logarithm of the fermion determinant in the fields of the crossed lasers. In each case, one finds for P an expression resembling Schwinger's 1951 result for the probability of pair production in a constant electric field, proportional to an exponential factor which contains an essential singularity and hence does not admit a perturbative expansion about zero coupling. Qualitative estimates of these models suggest that realistic yields for this form of e + e− production must await lasers of intensity 1029 W/m2. The possibility of producing a quark–antiquark pair in this way is noted, in particular, with temporary, but large separations of the qq.

High-temperature plasmas were produced by focusing 1·05 μm, 100 psec laser pulses onto Al layer targets at a mean irradiation of 3·1013 Watt/cm2. By means of simultaneous measurements of the thermal x-ray emission and the frequency-quadrupled laser pulse we observe a 20 ± 15 psec delay of the x-ray peak relative to the peak of the incident laser pulse. In addition, modulations on the trailing edge of the driving pulse appear strongly enhanced in the x-ray signature.

This article describes computer simulations of a longitudinal instability that affects induction linear accelerators for high-power ion beams. The instability is driven by axial bunching of ions when they interact with acceleration gaps connected to input transmission lines. The process is similar to the longitudinal resistive wall instability in continuous systems. Although bunching instabilities do not appear in existing induction linear accelerators for electrons, they may be important for proposed ion accelerators for heavy ion fusion. The simulation code is a particle-in-cell model that describes a drifting beam crossing discrete acceleration gaps with a self-consistent calculation of axial space charge forces. In present studies with periodic boundaries, the model predicts values for quantities such as the stabilizing axial velocity spread that are in good agreement with analytic theories. The simulations describe the nonlinear growth of the instability and its saturation with increased axial emittance. They show that an initially cold beam is subject to a severe disruption that drives the emittance well above the stabilized saturation levels. The simulation results confirm that axial space charge forces do not reduce axial beam bunching. In fact, space charge effects increase the axial velocity spread required for stability. With simple resistive driving circuits, the model predicts velocity spreads that are too high for heavy ion fusion applications. Several processes currently under study may mitigate this result, including advanced pulsed power switching methods, enhanced gap capacitance, and an energy spread impressed between individual beams of a multibeam transport system.

The problem of heavy-ion beam energy conversion into the plasma self-radiation of the spherical target is considered by using the radiative conductivity approximation. It is shown that there is a single parameter γ which determines the spherical ‘corona’ structure and has the meaning of the ratio: the ion range/the effective heat range. The conversion coefficient increases with the increase in the parameter γ and becomes ∼ 1, when γ ≃ 102. Typical beam and target parameters of modern HIF designs correspond to γ ≃ 10 and conversion coefficients >50%. Thus, at quasistationary stage of the ‘corona’ expansion the target acceleration and implosion regime is basically the radiative one.

Discharge plasma channels have been investigated in recent years at Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung–Darmstadt (GSI) and at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California, in a number of experiments. A short summary of the experimental work at Berkeley and GSI is given. Different initiation mechanisms for gas discharges of up to 60 kA were studied and compared. In the Berkeley experiments, laser ionization of organic vapors in a buffer gas was used to initiate and direct the discharge while at GSI, laser gas heating and ion-beam-induced gas ionization were tested as initiation mechanisms. These three initiation techniques are compared and the stability of the resulting discharge channels is discussed. A discharge current of 50 kA, a channel diameter well below 1 cm, a pointing stability better than 200 μm, and MHD stability of more than 10 μs have been demonstrated simultaneously in the recent experiments. These parameters are sufficient or close to the requirements of a reactor application depending on the details of the target design. The experimental results show that transport channels work with sufficient stability, reproducibility, and ion optical properties for a wide pressure range of discharge gases and pressures.

The electromagnetic acceleration of a metallic ring carrying a high current, combined with the mutual interaction of a concentrical conductor carrying the same current, in the presence of a DC magnetic field, results in a converging beam of particles reaching a velocity above 1000 km/s. Lithium, gold, and uranium rings are considered and transient temperatures ranging from 108 to 1010 °K are expected. In the presence of deuterium and tritium fusion reactions will occur and the capture of the released neutrons may result in the synthesis of heavier elements. The considered device lends itself to a varied treatment allowing to consider velocities in the range of 2000 km/s.

A two-dimensional simplified model of an HF chemical laser is introduced. Using an implicit finite difference scheme, the solution of two adjacent parallel streams with diffusion mixing and chemical reaction is generated. A contour of the mixing and reaction boundary is obtained without presupposition. The distribution of the HF(u) concentrations, gas temperature and the optical small signal gain (αu, J) on the flowing plane (X, Y) are presented. Compared with the solution solved directly from a set of Navier–Stokes equations, the results of these two methods agree with each other qualitatively. The influences of the different velocity, temperature (T0) and composition of the two streams on the small signal gain after the nozzle exit are investigated. It is interesting that for larger J with a fixed u, the peaks of αu, J—T0 profiles move towards higher T0. The computing method is simple and only a short computing time is needed.

The knowledge of the properties of atoms in high-temperature/density plasmas is of deep interest in many fields of physics. Theoretical studies and interpretation of the inertial confinement fusion experiments is one of the examples. On the basis of the density functional formalism, a model of matter at extreme conditions is presented. Application of the model is illustrated by examples of average ionization state and equation of state calculations.

A detailed investigation of many aspects of the physics of laser–plasma interaction at very high laser intensities is required in order to assess the feasibility and the promise of the fast ignitor scheme for inertial confinement fusion. Relevant results, obtained in a series of experiments carried out at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Chilton (UK) and at the Centre d'Etudes Atomique, Limeil Valenton (France), are presented and discussed here. In particular, the formation of plasma channels was observed following the propagation of relativistically intense, ps laser pulses through underdense plasmas. The channels persist long after the interaction, and their expansion has been measured. Efficient guiding of ultraintense laser pulses, both through preformed density channels and through solid guides, has been demonstrated. Finally, indication of collimated fast electron propagation through solid targets has been obtained from the observation of filamentary ionization tracks in laser irradiated solid targets.

Experimental results are presented on the focusing of an intense microsecond relativistic electron beam. The beam is generated in a high-voltage quasi-planar diode (E = 600–800 keV, τ = 3–5 μsec). It is then magnetically – focused by longitudinal injection into a magnetic mirror. The total energy of the beam is about 50 kJ. The focusing chamber is filled with argon under a pressure varying from 3 × 10−5 to 1 torr. The results include investigations of beam focusing under various conditions, the dynamics of the return current in the plasma as well as the influence of the reflected beam electrons on the operation of the accelerator diode. A 20-fold focused beam with a 4 cm diameter, 46 kJ energy content, and current density up to 3 kA/cm2 was obtained.
