We consider étale motivic or Lichtenbaum cohomology and its relation to algebraic cycles. We give an geometric interpretation of Lichtenbaum cohomology and use it to show that the usual integral cycle maps extend to maps on integral Lichtenbaum cohomology. We also show that Lichtenbaum cohomology, in contrast to the usual motivic cohomology, compares well with integral cohomology theories. For example, we formulate integral étale versions of the Hodge and the Tate conjecture, and show that these are equivalent to the usual rational conjectures.

Many results are known about test ideals and $F$-singularities for $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein rings. In this paper, we generalize many of these results to the case when the symbolic Rees algebra ${\mathcal{O}}_{X}\oplus {\mathcal{O}}_{X}(-K_{X})\oplus {\mathcal{O}}_{X}(-2K_{X})\oplus \cdots \,$ is finitely generated (or more generally, in the log setting for $-K_{X}-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}$). In particular, we show that the $F$-jumping numbers of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}(X,\mathfrak{a}^{t})$ are discrete and rational. We show that test ideals $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}(X)$ can be described by alterations as in Blickle–Schwede–Tucker (and hence show that splinters are strongly $F$-regular in this setting – recovering a result of Singh). We demonstrate that multiplier ideals reduce to test ideals under reduction modulo $p$ when the symbolic Rees algebra is finitely generated. We prove that Hartshorne–Speiser–Lyubeznik–Gabber-type stabilization still holds. We also show that test ideals satisfy global generation properties in this setting.

We construct the $p$-adic standard $L$-functions for ordinary families of Hecke eigensystems of the symplectic group $\operatorname{Sp}(2n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}$ using the doubling method. We explain a clear and simple strategy of choosing the local sections for the Siegel Eisenstein series on the doubling group $\operatorname{Sp}(4n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}$, which guarantees the nonvanishing of local zeta integrals and allows us to $p$-adically interpolate the restrictions of the Siegel Eisenstein series to $\operatorname{Sp}(2n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}\times \operatorname{Sp}(2n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}$.

In this article, we study the observability (or equivalently, the controllability) of some subelliptic evolution equations depending on their step. This sheds light on the speed of propagation of these equations, notably in the ‘degenerated directions’ of the subelliptic structure.

First, for any $\gamma \geq 1$ , we establish a resolvent estimate for the Baouendi–Grushin-type operator $\Delta _{\gamma }=\partial _x^2+\left \lvert x\right \rvert ^{2\gamma }\partial _y^2$ , which has step $\gamma +1$ . We then derive consequences for the observability of the Schrödinger-type equation $i\partial _tu-\left (-\Delta _{\gamma }\right )^{s}u=0$ , where $s\in \mathbb N$ . We identify three different cases: depending on the value of the ratio $(\gamma +1)/s$ , observability may hold in arbitrarily small time or only for sufficiently large times or may even fail for any time.

As a corollary of our resolvent estimate, we also obtain observability for heat-type equations $\partial _tu+\left (-\Delta _{\gamma }\right )^su=0$ and establish a decay rate for the damped wave equation associated with $\Delta _{\gamma }$ .

We adapt the classical notion of building models by games to the setting of continuous model theory. As an application, we study to what extent canonical operator algebras are enforceable models. For example, we show that the hyperfinite II1 factor is an enforceable II1 factor if and only if the Connes Embedding Problem has a positive solution. We also show that the set of continuous functions on the pseudoarc is an enforceable model of the theory of unital, projectionless, abelian $\text{C}^{\ast }$-algebras and use this to show that it is the prime model of its theory.

Let p be a prime. We construct and study integral and torsion invariants, such as integral and torsion Weil–Deligne representations, associated to potentially semi-stable representations and torsion potentially semi-stable representations respectively. As applications, we prove the compatibility between local Langlands correspondence and Fontaine's construction for Galois representations attached to Hilbert modular forms, and Néron–Ogg–Shafarevich criterion of finite level for potentially semi-stable representations.

We break the convexity bound in the t-aspect for L-functions attached to cusp forms f for GL2(k) over arbitrary number fields k. The argument uses asymptotics with error term with a power saving, for second integral moments over spectral families of twists L(s,f⊗χ) by Grossencharacters χ, from our previous paper on integral moments.

In this paper, we prove that cyclic homology, topological cyclic homology, and algebraic $K$-theory satisfy a pro Mayer–Vietoris property with respect to abstract blow-up squares of varieties, in both zero and finite characteristic. This may be interpreted as the well-definedness of $K$-theory with compact support.

For a variety with a Whitney stratification by affine spaces, we study categories of motivic sheaves which are constant mixed Tate along the strata. We are particularly interested in those cases where the category of mixed Tate motives over a point is equivalent to the category of finite-dimensional bigraded vector spaces. Examples of such situations include rational motives on varieties over finite fields and modules over the spectrum representing the semisimplification of de Rham cohomology for varieties over the complex numbers. We show that our categories of stratified mixed Tate motives have a natural weight structure. Under an additional assumption of pointwise purity for objects of the heart, tilting gives an equivalence between stratified mixed Tate sheaves and the bounded homotopy category of the heart of the weight structure. Specializing to the case of flag varieties, we find natural geometric interpretations of graded category ${\mathcal{O}}$ and Koszul duality.

Weinvestigate the Hasse principle for complete intersections cut out by a quadric hypersurface and a cubic hypersurface defined over the rational numbers.

We consider the Klein–Gordon equation on asymptotically anti-de-Sitter spacetimes subject to Neumann or Robin (or Dirichlet) boundary conditions and prove propagation of singularities along generalized broken bicharacteristics. The result is formulated in terms of conormal regularity relative to a twisted Sobolev space. We use this to show the uniqueness, modulo regularizing terms, of parametrices with prescribed $\text{b}$-wavefront set. Furthermore, in the context of quantum fields, we show a similar result for two-point functions satisfying a holographic Hadamard condition on the $\text{b}$-wavefront set.

We obtain second integral moments of automorphic L-functions on adele groups GL2 over arbitrary number fields, by a spectral decomposition using the structure and representation theory of adele groups GL1 and GL2. This requires reformulation of the notion of Poincaré series, replacing the collection of classical Poincaré series over GL2(ℚ) or GL2(ℚ(i)) with a single, coherent, global object that makes sense over a number field. This is the first expression of integral moments in adele-group terms, distinguishing global and local issues, and allowing uniform application to number fields. When specialized to the field of rational numbers ℚ, we recover the classical results on moments.

Two measurable sets $S,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{d}$ form a Heisenberg uniqueness pair, if every bounded measure $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ with support in $S$ whose Fourier transform vanishes on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}$ must be zero. We show that a quadratic hypersurface and the union of two hyperplanes in general position form a Heisenberg uniqueness pair in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. As a corollary we obtain a new, surprising version of the classical Cramér–Wold theorem: a bounded measure supported on a quadratic hypersurface is uniquely determined by its projections onto two generic hyperplanes (whereas an arbitrary measure requires the knowledge of a dense set of projections). We also give an application to the unique continuation of eigenfunctions of second-order PDEs with constant coefficients.

This paper sets up the foundations for derived algebraic geometry, Goerss–Hopkins obstruction theory, and the construction of commutative ring spectra in the abstract setting of operadic algebras in symmetric spectra in an (essentially) arbitrary model category. We show that one can do derived algebraic geometry a la Toën–Vezzosi in an abstract category of spectra. We also answer in the affirmative a question of Goerss and Hopkins by showing that the obstruction theory for operadic algebras in spectra can be done in the generality of spectra in an (essentially) arbitrary model category. We construct strictly commutative simplicial ring spectra representing a given cohomology theory and illustrate this with a strictly commutative motivic ring spectrum representing higher order products on Deligne cohomology. These results are obtained by first establishing Smith’s stable positive model structure for abstract spectra and then showing that this category of spectra possesses excellent model-theoretic properties: we show that all colored symmetric operads in symmetric spectra valued in a symmetric monoidal model category are admissible, i.e., algebras over such operads carry a model structure. This generalizes the known model structures on commutative ring spectra and $\text{E}_{\infty }$-ring spectra in simplicial sets or motivic spaces. We also show that any weak equivalence of operads in spectra gives rise to a Quillen equivalence of their categories of algebras. For example, this extends the familiar strictification of $\text{E}_{\infty }$-rings to commutative rings in a broad class of spectra, including motivic spectra. We finally show that operadic algebras in Quillen equivalent categories of spectra are again Quillen equivalent. This paper is also available at arXiv:1410.5699v2.

Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field, and let $G^{\sharp }$ be the group of $F$-rational points of an inner form of $\text{SL}_{n}$. We study Hecke algebras for all Bernstein components of $G^{\sharp }$, via restriction from an inner form $G$ of $\text{GL}_{n}(F)$.

For any packet of L-indistinguishable Bernstein components, we exhibit an explicit algebra whose module category is equivalent to the associated category of complex smooth $G^{\sharp }$-representations. This algebra comes from an idempotent in the full Hecke algebra of $G^{\sharp }$, and the idempotent is derived from a type for $G$. We show that the Hecke algebras for Bernstein components of $G^{\sharp }$ are similar to affine Hecke algebras of type $A$, yet in many cases are not Morita equivalent to any crossed product of an affine Hecke algebra with a finite group.

This second part of the paper strengthens the descent theory described in the first part torational maps and arbitrary base fields. We obtain in particular a decomposition of any difference field extension into a tower of finite, field-internal and one-based difference field extensions. This is needed in order to obtain the ‘dynamical Northcott’ Theorem 1.11 of Part I in sharp form.

We study the Daugavet property in tensor products of Banach spaces. We show that $L_{1}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D707})\widehat{\otimes }_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}}L_{1}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D708})$ has the Daugavet property when $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ are purely non-atomic measures. Also, we show that $X\widehat{\otimes }_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}}Y$ has the Daugavet property provided $X$ and $Y$ are $L_{1}$-preduals with the Daugavet property, in particular, spaces of continuous functions with this property. With the same techniques, we also obtain consequences about roughness in projective tensor products as well as the Daugavet property of projective symmetric tensor products.

We prove that, under rather general conditions, the 1-cohomology of a von Neumann algebra $M$ with values in a Banach $M$ -bimodule satisfying a combination of smoothness and operatorial conditions vanishes. For instance, we show that, if $M$ acts normally on a Hilbert space ${\mathcal{H}}$ and ${\mathcal{B}}_{0}\subset {\mathcal{B}}({\mathcal{H}})$ is a norm closed $M$ -bimodule such that any $T\in {\mathcal{B}}_{0}$ is smooth (i.e., the left and right multiplications of $T$ by $x\in M$ are continuous from the unit ball of $M$ with the $s^{\ast }$ -topology to ${\mathcal{B}}_{0}$ with its norm), then any derivation of $M$ into ${\mathcal{B}}_{0}$ is inner. The compact operators are smooth over any $M\subset {\mathcal{B}}({\mathcal{H}})$ , but there is a large variety of non-compact smooth elements as well.

We study a rich family of robustly non-hyperbolic transitive diffeomorphisms and we show that each ergodic measure is approached by hyperbolic sets in weak$\ast$-topology and in entropy. For hyperbolic ergodic measures, it is a classical result of A. Katok. The novelty here is to deal with non-hyperbolic ergodic measures. As a consequence, we obtain the continuity of topological entropy.

We investigate Tukey functions from the ideal of all closed nowhere-dense subsets of 2ℕ. In particular, we answer an old question of Isbell and Fremlin by showing that this ideal is not Tukey reducible to the ideal of density zero subsets of ℕ. We also prove non-existence of various special types of Tukey reductions from the nowhere-dense ideal to analytic P-ideals. In connection with these results, we study families of clopen subsets of 2ℕ with the property that for each nowhere-dense subset of 2ℕ there is a set in not intersecting it. We call such families avoiding.
