For a point set in the multidimensional unit torus we introduce an Lk-measure of uniformity of distribution, which for k=2 reduces to diaphony (and thus in this case essentially coincides with Weyl L2-discrepancy). For k ∈ [1, 2] we establish a sharp asymptotic for this new measure as the number of points of the set tends to infinity. Upper and lower-bound estimates are given also for k >2.

Let X be a closed, oriented, smooth 4-manifold with a finite fundamental group and with a non-vanishing Seiberg-Witten invariant. Let G be a finite group. If G acts smoothly and freely on X, then the quotient X/G cannot be decomposed as X1#X2 with (Xi) > 0, i = 1, 2. In addition let X be symplectic and c1(X)2 > 0 and b+2(X) > 3. If σ is a free anti-symplectic involution on X then the Seiberg-Witten invariants on X/σ vanish for all spinc structures on X/σ, and if η is a free symplectic involution on X then the quotients X/σ and X/η are not diffeomorphic to each other.

Groupoid actions on C*-bundles and inverse semigroup actions on C*-algebras are closely related when the groupoid is r-discrete.

It is shown that every element of the complex contracted semigroup algebra of an inverse semigroup S = S0 has a Moore-Penrose inverse, with respect to the natural involution, if and only if S is locally finite. In particular, every element of a complex group algebra has such an inverse if and only if the group is locally finite.

Let f be a transcendental entire function and denote the n-th iterate fn. For n ≥ 2, we give an explict estimate of the number of periodic points of f with period n, that is, fix-points of fn which are not fix-points of fk for 1 ≤ k <n.

Normal functions and Bloch functions are respectively functions of bounded spherical expansion and bounded Euclidean expansion. In this paper we discuss the behaviour of normal functions and of Bloch functions in terms of the maximal ideal space of H∞, the Bergman projection and the Ahlfors-Shimizu characteristic.

A multisymplectic structure on a manifold is defined by a closed differential form with zero characteristic distribution. Starting from the linear case, some of the basic properties of multisymplectic structures are described. Various examples of multisymplectic manifolds are considered, and special attention is paid to the canonical multisymplectic structure living on a bundle of exterior k-forms on a manifold. For a class of multisymplectic manifolds admitting a ‘Lagrangian’ fibration, a general structure theorem is given which, in particular, leads to a classification of these manifolds in terms of a prescribed family of cohomology classes.

In this paper we describe the moduli spaces of degree d branched superminimal immersions of a compact Riemann surface of genus g into S4. We prove that when d ≥ max {2g, g + 2}, such spaces have the structure of projectivzed fibre products and are path-connected quasi projective varieties of dimension 2d − g + 4. This generalizes known results for spaces of harmonic 2-spheres in S4.

A Radon-Nikodým theorem for Banach valued polymeasures is proved.

For a real vector space V acted on by a group K and fixed x and y in V, we consider the problem of finding the minimum (respectively, maximum) distance, relative to a K-invariant convex function on V, between x and elements of the convex hull of the K-orbit of y. We solve this problem in the case where V is a Euclidean space and K is a finite reflection group acting on V. Then we use this result to obtain an analogous result in the case where K is a maximal compact subgroup of a reductive group G with adjoint action on the vector component ρ of a Cartan decomposition of Lie G. Our results generalize results of Li and Tsing and of Cheng concerning distances to the convex hulls of matrix orbits.

The authors establish the boundedness on the Herz spaces and the weak Herz spaces for a large class of rough singular integral operators and their corresponding fractional versions. Applications are given to Fefferman's rough singular integral operators, their fractional versions, their commutators with BMO() functions and Ricci-Stein oscillatory singular integral operators. Some new results are obtained.

This paper gives non-embeddings and non-immersions for the real flag manifolds RF(1, 1, n–2), n > 3 and shows that Lam's immersions for n = 4 and 5 and Stong's result for n = 6 are the best possible.

The classic Banach Contraction Principle assumes that the self-map is a contraction. Rather than requiring that a single operator be a contraction, we weaken this hypothesis by considering a minimum involving a set of iterates of that operator. This idea is a central motif for many of the results of this paper, in which we also study how this weakended hypothesis may be applied in Caristi's theorem, and how combinatorial arguments may be used in proving fixed-point theorems.

In this paper we study the Stone-Čech bicompactification () of the bispace (X, P, Q). We show that the ring of all continuous real-valued functions on () may be identified with the uniform closure of a suitable subring of C(). Using this result, we give a characterization of the Wallman-Sanin compactifications of the pairwise Tychonoff bitopological spaces.

In this paper we show that, for analytic composition operators between weighted Bergman spaces (including Hardy spaces) and as far as boundedness, compactness, order boundedness and certain summing properties of the adjoint are concerned, it is possible to modify domain spaces in a systematic fashion: there is a space of analytic functions which embeds continuously into each of the spaces under consideration and on which the above properties of the operator are decided.

A remarkable consequence is that, in the setting of composition operators between weighted Bergman spaces, the properties in question can be identified as properties of the operator as a map between appropriately chosen Hilbert spaces.

We define the Radon transform for functions on the set of chambers of affine, locally finite, rank three buildings. We investigate the problem of the inversion of this transform. Explicit inversion formulas are exhibited for functions which fulfill required summability conditions.

In this note, a characterization of the Möbius invariant space Qp for the range 1 - 1/n lt; p ≤ 1 is given. As a special case p = 1, we get the Möbius boundedness of BMOA in the space H2. This extends the corresponding result for 1-dimension.

We consider positive linear operators of probabilistic type L1f acting on real functions f defined on the positive semi-axis. We deal with the problem of uniform convergence of L1f to f, both in the usual sup-norm and in a uniform Lp type of norm. In both cases, we obtain direct and converse inequalities in terms of a suitable weighted first modulus of smoothness of f. These results are applied to the Baskakov operator and to a gamma operator connected with real Laplace transforms, Poisson mixtures and Weyl fractional derivatives of Laplace transforms.
