We give necessary conditions of a surface-knot to be ribbon concordant to another, by introducing a new variant of the cocycle invariant of surface-knots in addition to using the invariant already known. We demonstrate that twist-spins of some torus knots are not ribbon concordant to their orientation reversed images.

A cover for a group is a finite set of subgroups whose union is the whole group. A cover is minimal if its cardinality is minimal. Minimal covers of finite soluble groups are categorised; in particular all but at most one of their members are maximal subgroups. A characterisation is given of groups with minimal covers consisting of abelian subgroups.

Let E and F constitute a Banach pairing. We prove that the algebra of F-nuclear operators on E, Nf (E), is amenable if and only if E is finite dimensional and is weakly amenable if and only if dim KF ≦ 1, and the trace on E⊗F is injective on KF. Here KF is the kernel of the canonical map E⊗^F →NF(E). On the route we find the corresponding statements for the associated tensor algebra, E⊗^F.

In a series of papers ((1967), (1967a) and (1967b)) Magill has considered the semigroups J(X, Y; θ) (definition below), a natural, but extensive, generalization of the usual transformation semigroup J(X). They have also been studiedin Sullivan (to appear). Under the assumption that θ be onto Magill described their automorphisms and determined when one J(X, Y; θ) is isomorphic to another.

We prove that for a large class of Banach function spaces continuity and holomorphy of superposition operators are equivalent and that bounded superposition operators are continuous. We also use techniques from infinite dimensional holomorphy to establish the boundedness of certain superposition operators. Finally, we apply our results to the study of superposition operators on weighted spaces of holomorphic functions and the $F(p, \alpha , \beta )$ spaces of Zhao. Some independent properties on these spaces are also obtained.

We provide evaluations of several recently studied higher and multiple Mahler measures using log-sine integrals. This is complemented with an analysis of generating functions and identities for log-sine integrals which allows the evaluations to be expressed in terms of zeta values or more general polylogarithmic terms. The machinery developed is then applied to evaluation of further families of multiple Mahler measures.

We prove that in the character group of an abelian topological group, the topology associated (in a standard way) to the continuous convergence structure is the finest of all those which induce the topology of simple convergence on the corresponding equicontinuous subsets. If the starting group is furthermore metrizable (or even almost metrizable), we obtain that such a topology coincides with the compact-open topology. This result constitutes a generalization of the theorem of Banach-Dieudonné, which is well known in the theory of locally convex spaces.

We also characterize completeness, in the class of locally quasi-convex metrizable groups, by means of a property which we have called the quasi-convex compactness property, or briefly qcp (Section 3).

We prove that every for every complete lattice-ordered effect algebra E there exists an orthomodular lattice O(E) and a surjective full morphism øE: O(E) → E which preserves blocks in both directions: the (pre)imageofa block is always a block. Moreover, there is a 0, 1-lattice embedding : E → O(E).

The problem of diffraction of a Kelvin wave by a narrow opening in a barrier separating two semi-infinite sheets of water is formulated as an integral equation. An approximate solution is obtained on the hypothesis that the gap is small compared with the length of the incident wave. The scattered disturbance comprises both Kelvin and Poincaré waves, and asymptotic formulate for their amplitudes are obtained. The results, which are relevant to tidal diffraction by a strait, reveal that the phase shift in the diffracted Kelvin wave is much larger than the corresponding shift induced by either a narrow channel or an inland sea opening into a semi-infinite ocean.

Let S be a locally compact semigroup and M(S) its measure algebra. It is shown that the dual M(S)* is isometrically order isomorphic to the space GL(S) of all generalised functions on S first introduced by Šreǐder (1950). Moreover, convolutions of elements in each of the spaces M(S)* and GL(S) can be defined in such a way that the above isomorphism preserves convolutions. These results on representation of functionals in M(S)* by generalised functions practically open up a new chapter in abstract harmonic analysis. As an example, some applications to invariant means on locally compact semigroups are given.

A one-sided shift of finite type $(\mathsf{X}_{A},\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{A})$ determines on the one hand a Cuntz–Krieger algebra ${\mathcal{O}}_{A}$ with a distinguished abelian subalgebra ${\mathcal{D}}_{A}$ and a certain completely positive map $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}_{A}$ on ${\mathcal{O}}_{A}$. On the other hand, $(\mathsf{X}_{A},\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{A})$ determines a groupoid ${\mathcal{G}}_{A}$ together with a certain homomorphism $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}_{A}$ on ${\mathcal{G}}_{A}$. We show that each of these two sets of data completely characterizes the one-sided conjugacy class of $\mathsf{X}_{A}$. This strengthens a result of Cuntz and Krieger. We also exhibit an example of two irreducible shifts of finite type which are eventually conjugate but not conjugate. This provides a negative answer to a question of Matsumoto of whether eventual conjugacy implies conjugacy.

In an earlier paper [11] we discussed the problem of when an (m, n)-complete lattice L is isomorphic to an (m, n)-ring of sets. The condition obtained was simply that there should exist sufficiently many prime ideals of a certain kind, and illustrations were given from topology and elsewhere. However, in these illustrations the prime ideals in question were all principal, and it is desirable to find and study examples where this simplification does not occur. Such an example is the lattice Z(X) of all zero-sets of a topological space X; we refer to Gillman and Jerison [5] for the simple proof that Z(X) is a (2, σ)-ring of subsets of X, where we denote aleph-zero by σ.

Let G be a finite p-solvable group for a fixed prime p. We study how certain arithmetical conditions on the set of p-regular conjugacy class sizes of G influence the p-structure of G. In particular, the structure of the p-complements of G is described when this set is {1, m, n} for arbitrary coprime integers m, n > 1. The structure of G is determined when the noncentral p-regular class lengths are consecutive numbers and when all of them are prime powers.

T. Schneider [1] has shown that a transcendental function with a limited rate of growth cannot assume algebraic values at too many algebraic points. It is not clear however whether a transcendental function may assume algebraic values at all algebraic points in an open set in its domain of analyticity. We show, using a method of B. H. Neumann and R. Rado [2] that this can be the case. Indeed we construct transcendental entire functions which, together with all their derivatives, assume, at every point in every algebraic number field, values in that field.

If G is a finite linear group of degree n, that is, a finite group of automorphisms of an n-dimensional complex vector space (or, equivalently, a finite group of non-singular matrices of order n with complex coefficients), I shall say that G is a quasi-permutation group if the trace of every element of G is a non-negative rational integer. The reason for this terminology is that, if G is a permutation group of degree n, its elements, considered as acting on the elements of a basis of an n-dimensional complex vector space V, induce automorphisms of V forming a group isomorphic to G. The trace of the automorphism corresponding to an element x of G is equal to the number of letters left fixed by x, and so is a non-negative integer. Thus, a permutation group of degree n has a representation as a quasi-permutation group of degree n.

We give a new proof that a finitely generated congruence-distributive variety has finitely determined syntactic congruences (or, equivalently, term finite principal congruences), and show that the same does not hold for finitely generated congruence-permutable varieties, even underthe additional assumption that the variety is residually very finite.

In this paper the question is considered of when the wreath product of a nilpotent group with a CLT group G is a CLT group. It is shown that if the field with Pr elements is a splitting field of a Hall P1–subgroup of G, then P wr G is a CLT group for all p–groups P with |P/P1|≥ pr. Moreover, the class of all groups G having the property that N wr G is a CLT group for every nilpotent group N is shown to be quite large. For exmple, every group of odd order can be embedded as a subgroup of a group belonging to this class.

For a class of ‘linear’ sudoku solutions, we construct mutually orthogonal families of maximal size for all square orders, and we show that all such solutions must lie in the same orbit of a symmetry group preserving sudoku solutions.

We consider linear recursive sequences of integers not all zero such that , where the aj are rational integers.

A celebrated result, due to Jacobi, says that the number of representations of the positive integer n as a sum of four squares is equal to eight times the sum of the divisors of n which are not divisible by 4. We give a new and simple proof of this result which depends only on Jacobi's triple product identity.
