In this paper we describe a way of representing varieties of algebras by algebras. That is, to each variety of algebras we assign an algebra of a certain type, such that two varieties are rationallv equivalent if and only if the assigned algebras are isomorphic.

The purpose of this paper is to give a more precise form of Theorem 1 of [2], which gives a structure theorem for subgroups of HNN groups; we prove the following.

Let H be a subgroup of the HNN group <A, xi;xiU-ixi-1 = Ui>. Then H is an HNN group whose base is a tree product of groups H ∪ wAw-1 where w runs over a set of double coset representatives of (H,A); the amalgamated and associated subgroups are all of the form H ∊ vUiv-l for some v. We can be more precise about which subgroups occur and about the tree product. We will also obtain stronger forms of other results in [1] and [2].

Let k be a positive integer and b a nonzero constant. Suppose that F is a family of meromorphic functions in a domain D. If each function f ∈ F has only zeros of multiplicity at least k + 2 and for any two functions f, g ∈ F, f and g share 0 in D and f(k) and g(k) share b in D, then F is normal in D. The case f ≠ 0, f(k) ≠ b is a celebrated result of Gu.

The present paper deals with the Clifford groups in the case p = 2. For the most part, it runs parallel to the previous paper I ([1]) on the case p > 2, and a number of proofs are therefore either given in outline or omitted. A general introduction to both papers is given in I, § 1.

Sufficient conditons are given for the chaotic behaviour of difference equations defined in terms of continuous mappings in Rn. These conditions are applicable to both difference equations with snap-back repellors and with saddle points. They are applied here to the twisted-horseshoe difference equation of Guckenheimer, Oster and Ipaktchi.

Suppose that an elliptic curve $E$ over $ \mathbb{Q} $ has good supersingular reduction at $p$. We prove that Kobayashi’s plus/minus Selmer group of $E$ over a ${ \mathbb{Z} }_{p} $-extension has no proper $\Lambda $-submodule of finite index under some suitable conditions, where $\Lambda $ is the Iwasawa algebra of the Galois group of the ${ \mathbb{Z} }_{p} $-extension. This work is analogous to Greenberg’s result in the ordinary reduction case.

A semigroup S is called E-inversive if for every a ∈ S ther is an x ∈ S such that (ax)2 = ax. A construction of all E-inversive subdirect products of two E-inversive semigroups is given using the concept of subhomomorphism introduced by McAlister and Reilly for inverse semigroups. As an application, E-unitary covers for an E-inversive semigroup are found, in particular for those whose maximum group homomorphic image is a given group. For this purpose, the explicit form of the least group congruence on an arbitrary E-inversive semigroup is given. The special case of full subdirect products of a semilattice and a group (that is, containing all indempotents of the direct product) is investigated and, following an idea of Petrich, a construction of all these semigroups is provided. Finally, all periodic semigroups which are subdirect products of a semilattice or a band with a group are characterized.

In this paper we introduce the notion of Riesz homomorphism on Archimedean directed partially ordered groups and use it to study the vector lattice cover of such groups.

We propose to study a topological property which is not new, but seems not to have been systematically investigated.

In this note we characterize PSL2(7) by conditions on the order of the group and the orders of its elements.

It is a well-known result of W. Magnus [3] that there is a faithful matrix representation for metabelian groups i.e the groups satisfying the law ‘x, y; u, v’. The work in this paper arose in an attempt by the author to find a faithful matrix representation for centre-by-metabelian groups i.e. the groups satisfying the law ‘ x, y; u, v].

A module M over a ring R is κ-projective, κ a cardinal, if M is projective relative to all exact sequence of R-modules 0 → A → B → C → 0 such that C has a generating set of cardinality less than κ. A structure theorem for κ-projective modules over Dedekind domains is proven, and the κ-projectivity of M is related to properties of ExtR (M, ⊕ R). Using results of S. Chase, S. Shelah and P. Eklof, the existence of non-projective и1-projective modules is shown to undecidable, while both the Continuum Hypothesis and its denial (Plus Martin's Axiom) imply the existence of a reduced И0-projective Z-module which is not free.

We establish a one-to-one “group-like” correspondence between congruences on a free monoid X* and so-called positively self-conjugate inverse submonoids of the polycyclic monoid P(X). This enables us to translate many concepts in semigroup theory into the language of inverse semigroups.

In this paper we shall extend the classical theory of Morita equivalence to semigroups with local units. We shall use the concept of a Morita context to rediscover the Rees theorem and to characterise completely 0-simple and regular bisimple semigroups.

We introduce partial actions of weakly left E-ample semigroups, thus extending both the notion of partial actions of inverse semigroups and that of partial actions of monoids. Weakly left E-ample semigroups arise very naturally as subsemigroups of partial transformation semigroups which are closed under the unary operation α↦α+, where α+ is the identity map on the domain of α. We investigate the construction of ‘actions’ from such partial actions, making a connection with the FA-morphisms of Gomes. We observe that if the methods introduced in the monoid case by Megrelishvili and Schröder, and by the second author, are to be extended appropriately to the case of weakly left E-ample semigroups, then we must construct not global actions, but so-called incomplete actions. In particular, we show that a partial action of a weakly left E-ample semigroup is the restriction of an incomplete action. We specialize our approach to obtain corresponding results for inverse semigroups.

A proper ideal I of a ring R is said to be strongly irreducible if for each pair of ideals A and B of R, implies that either or . In this paper we study strongly irreducible ideals in different rings. The relations between strongly irreducible ideals of a ring and strongly irreducible ideals of localizations of the ring are also studied. Furthermore, a topology similar to the Zariski topology related to strongly irreducible ideals is introduced. This topology has the Zariski topology defined by prime ideals as one of its subspace topologies.

A Latin square is considered to be a set of n2 cells with three block systems. An automorphisni is a permutation of the cells which preserves each block system. The automorphism group of a Latin Square necessarily has at least 4 orbits on unordered pairs of cells if n < 2. It is shown that there are exactly 4 orbits if and only if the square is the composition table of an elementary abelian 2-group or the cclic group of order 3.

The greatest lower bound (in fact, ½) is found of constants k such that for an infinity of rationals p/q.

The relation between the fractional integral operator and the fractional maximal operator is investigated in the framework of Morrey spaces. Applications to the Fefferman–Phong and the Olsen inequalities are also included.

A type of p–adic continued fraction first considered by A. Ruban is described, and is used to give a characterization of rational numbers.
