Multi-fin systems, like fish or fish-inspired vehicles, are governed by unsteady three-dimensional interactions between their multiple fins. In particular, dorsal/anal fins have received much attention because they are just upstream of the main thrust-producing fin: the caudal (tail) fin. We used a tuna-inspired fish model with variable fin sharpness to study the interaction between elongated dorsal/anal fins and caudal fins. We found that the performance enhancement is stronger than previously thought (15 % increase in swimming speed and 50 % increase in swimming economy) and is governed by a three-dimensional dorsal-fin-induced cross-flow that lowers the angle of attack on the caudal fin and promotes spanwise flow. Both simulations and multi-layer particle image velocimetry reveal that the cross-flow stabilizes the leading edge vortex on the caudal fin, similar to how wing strakes prevent stall during fixed-wing aircraft manoeuvres. Unlike other fin–fin interactions, this mechanism is phase-insensitive and offers a simple, passive solution for flow control over oscillating propulsors. Our results therefore improve our understanding of multi-fin flow interactions and suggest new insights into dorsal/anal fin shape and placement in fish and fish-inspired vehicles.

Bluntness effects on laminar hypersonic leading edge separation are investigated numerically at Mach number $M\approx 10$, unit Reynolds number $Re=1.3\times 10^{6}~\text{m}^{-1}$, specific enthalpy $h_{o}=3.1~\text{MJ}~\text{kg}^{-1}$ and wall-to-stagnation temperature ratio $T_{w}/T_{o}=0.1$. Such effects are important from an experimental point of view and because bluntness can affect a separated flow favourably or adversely. In this study, two blunt leading edge cases of small radius ($15~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$) and large radius ($100~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$) are investigated. A comparison with the idealised sharp leading edge case is also given. General flow features and surface parameters such as the shear stress, pressure and heat flux are presented and analysed. The results have also been interpreted in terms of Cheng’s displacement-bluntness similitude parameter affecting the size of separation. Previous experiments by Holden delineated small and large bluntness effects based on Cheng’s parameter and considering small to moderate separated regions. In this study, leading edge separation was found to suppress the favourable effect of bluntness in delaying separation. Bluntness, furthermore, seemed to promote the appearance of secondary vortices within a main separated region. Analysis of reverse flow boundary layer profiles such as velocity, pressure and temperature is also given. It is shown that bluntness accentuates large transverse gradients. This in turn adversely effects the reverse flow boundary layer leading to the appearance of secondary vortices.

The exact regularised point particle (ERPP) method is extended to treat the inter-phase momentum coupling between particles and fluid in the presence of walls by accounting for vorticity generation due to particles close to solid boundaries. The ERPP method overcomes the limitations of other methods by allowing the simulation of an extensive parameter space (Stokes number, mass loading, particle-to-fluid density ratio and Reynolds number) and of particle spatial distributions that are uneven (few particles per computational cell). The enhanced ERPP method is explained in detail and validated by considering the global impulse balance. In conditions when particles are located close to the wall, a common scenario in wall-bounded turbulent flows, the main contribution to the total impulse arises from the particle-induced vorticity at the solid boundary. The method is applied to direct numerical simulations of particle-laden turbulent pipe flow in the two-way coupling regime to address turbulence modulation. The effects of the mass loading, the Stokes number and the particle-to-fluid density ratio are investigated. The drag is either unaltered or increased by the particles with respect to the uncoupled case. No drag reduction is found in the parameter space considered. The momentum stress budget, which includes an extra stress contribution by the particles, provides the rationale behind the drag behaviour. The extra stress produces a momentum flux towards the wall that strongly modifies the viscous stress, the culprit of drag at solid boundaries.

The integration of oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy converters into a coastal structure (breakwater, jetty, pier, etc.) or, more generally, their installation along the coast is an effective way to increase the accessibility of wave power exploitation. In this paper, a theoretical model is developed based on the linear potential flow theory and eigenfunction matching method to evaluate the hydrodynamic performance of an array of OWCs installed along a vertical straight coast. The chamber of each OWC consists of a hollow vertical circular cylinder, which is half embedded in the wall. The OWC chambers in the theoretical model may have different sizes, i.e. different values of the radius, wall thickness and submergence. At the top of each chamber, a Wells turbine is installed to extract power. The effects of the Wells turbine together with the air compressibility are taken into account as a linear power take-off system. The hydrodynamic and wave power extraction performance of the multiple coast-integrated OWCs is compared with that of a single offshore/coast-integrated OWC and of multiple offshore OWCs. More specifically, we analyse the role of the incident wave direction, chamber size (i.e. radius, wall thickness and submergence), spacing between OWCs and number of OWCs by means of the present theoretical model. It is shown that wave power extraction from the coast-integrated OWCs for a certain range of wave conditions can be significantly enhanced due to both the constructive array effect and the constructive coast effect.

Recent modelling work has shown that abrupt bathymetric transitions can produce dramatic amplifications of long waves, under the influence of both nonlinearity and dispersion. Here, the evolution of wave packets towards a vertical wall over a varying bathymetry is investigated with a one-dimensional conformal-mapping spectral code. In this system, wave breaking, runup and reflection, wave interference and bathymetric effects are highlighted. Wave breaking is examined with respect to geometric, kinematic and energetic conditions, with consistent results. The breaking strength is characterized for spilling and plunging based on initial wave period and amplitude. Non-breaking waves are amplified by reflection, interference and the bathymetry leading to large runups. In a typical example inspired by a real-world bathymetry, the maximum runup amplification approaches a factor of 12 – large enough for a 3 m amplitude wave to overtop a 30 m cliff.

The Stokes wave problem in a constant vorticity flow is formulated, by virtue of conformal mapping techniques, as a nonlinear pseudodifferential equation, involving the periodic Hilbert transform, which becomes the Babenko equation in the irrotational flow setting. The associated linearized operator is self-adjoint, whereby the modified Babenko equation is efficiently solved by the Newton-conjugate gradient method. For strong positive vorticity, a ‘fold’ appears in the wave speed versus amplitude plane, and a ‘gap’ as the vorticity strength increases, bounded by two touching waves, whose profile contacts with itself at the trough line, enclosing a bubble of air. More folds and gaps follow for stronger vorticity. Touching waves at the beginnings of the lowest gaps tend to the limiting Crapper wave as the vorticity strength increases indefinitely or, equivalently, gravitational acceleration vanishes, while the profile encloses a circular bubble of fluid in rigid body rotation at the ends of the gaps. Touching waves at the beginnings of the second gaps tend to the circular vortex wave on top of the limiting Crapper wave in the infinite vorticity limit, or the zero gravity limit, and the circular vortex wave on top of itself at the ends of the gaps. Touching waves for higher gaps accommodate more circular bubbles of fluid.

Instabilities of a viscous fluid between two fast but differentially rotating concentric spheres, the so-called spherical Couette flow, with a fixed radius ratio of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}=r_{i}/r_{o}=1/3$ are studied, where $r_{i}$ is the inner and $r_{o}$ the outer radius of the spherical shell. Of particular interest is the difference between cases where the Rossby number $Ro=(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{i}-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{o})/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{o}>0$ and cases with $Ro<0$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{i}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{o}$ are the inner- and outer-sphere angular velocities. The basic state in both situations is an axisymmetric shear flow with a Stewartson layer situated on the tangent cylinder. The tangent cylinder is given by a cylinder that touches the equator of the inner sphere with an axis parallel to the axis of rotation. The experimental results presented fully confirm earlier numerical results obtained by Hollerbach (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 492, 2003, pp. 289–302) showing that for $Ro>0$ a progression to higher azimuthal wavenumbers $m$ can be seen as the rotation rate $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{0}$ increases, but $Ro<0$ gives $m=1$ over a large range of rotation rates. It is further found that in the former case the modes have spiral structures radiating away from Stewartson layer towards the outer shell whereas for $Ro<0$ the modes are trapped in the vicinity of the Stewartson layer. Further, the mean flow excited by inertial mode self-interaction and its correlation with the mode’s amplitudes are investigated. The scaling of the critical $Ro$ with Ekman number $E=\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}/(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}_{o}\,d^{2})$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ is the kinematic viscosity and $d$ the gap width, is well within the bounds that have been established in a number of experimental studies using cylindrical geometries and numerical studies using spherical cavities. However, the present work is the first that experimentally examines Stewartson-layer instabilities as a function of the sign of $Ro$ for the true spherical-shell geometry.

We present a new method for large scale dynamic simulation of colloidal particles with hydrodynamic interactions and Brownian forces, which we call fast Stokesian dynamics (FSD). The approach for modelling the hydrodynamic interactions between particles is based on the Stokesian dynamics (SD) algorithm (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 448, 2001, pp. 115–146), which decomposes the interactions into near-field (short-ranged, pairwise additive and diverging) and far-field (long-ranged many-body) contributions. In FSD, the standard system of linear equations for SD is reformulated using a single saddle point matrix. We show that this reformulation is generalizable to a host of particular simulation methods enabling the self-consistent inclusion of a wide range of constraints, geometries and physics in the SD simulation scheme. Importantly for fast, large scale simulations, we show that the saddle point equation is solved very efficiently by iterative methods for which novel preconditioners are derived. In contrast to existing approaches to accelerating SD algorithms, the FSD algorithm avoids explicit inversion of ill-conditioned hydrodynamic operators without adequate preconditioning, which drastically reduces computation time. Furthermore, the FSD formulation is combined with advanced sampling techniques in order to rapidly generate the stochastic forces required for Brownian motion. Specifically, we adopt the standard approach of decomposing the stochastic forces into near-field and far-field parts. The near-field Brownian force is readily computed using an iterative Krylov subspace method, for which a novel preconditioner is developed, while the far-field Brownian force is efficiently computed by linearly transforming those forces into a fluctuating velocity field, computed easily using the positively split Ewald approach (J. Chem. Phys., vol. 146, 2017, 124116). The resultant effect of this field on the particle motion is determined through solution of a system of linear equations using the same saddle point matrix used for deterministic calculations. Thus, this calculation is also very efficient. Additionally, application of the saddle point formulation to develop high-resolution hydrodynamic models from constrained collections of particles (similar to the immersed boundary method) is demonstrated and the convergence of such models is discussed in detail. Finally, an optimized graphics processing unit implementation of FSD for mono-disperse spherical particles is used to demonstrated performance and accuracy of dynamic simulations of $O(10^{5})$ particles, and an open source plugin for the HOOMD-blue suite of molecular dynamics software is included in the supplementary material.

We propose a new theoretical model for metal pad roll instability in idealized cylindrical reduction cells. In addition to the usual destabilizing effects, we model viscous and Joule dissipation and some capillary effects. The resulting explicit formulas are used as theoretical benchmarks for two multiphase magnetohydrodynamic solvers, OpenFOAM and SFEMaNS. Our explicit formula for the viscous damping rate of gravity waves in cylinders with two fluid layers compares excellently to experimental measurements. We use our model to locate the viscously controlled instability threshold in cylindrical shallow reduction cells but also in Mg–Sb liquid metal batteries with decoupled interfaces.

We investigate the ability of an active body (master) to manipulate a passive object (slave) purely via contactless flow-mediated mechanisms, motivated by potential applications in microfluidic devices and medicine (drug delivery purposes). We extend prior works on active–passive cylinder pairs by superimposing periodic oscillations to the master’s linear motion. In a viscous fluid, such oscillations produce an additional viscous streaming field, which is leveraged for enhancing slave transport. We see that superimposing oscillations robustly improves transport across a range of Reynolds numbers. Comparison with results without oscillations highlights the flow mechanisms at work, which we capitalize on to design (master) geometries for augmented transport. These principles are found to extend to three-dimensional active–passive shapes as well.

We present a detailed study of the turbulent wake behind a quarter-ring curved cylinder at Reynolds number $Re=3900$ (based on cylinder diameter and incoming flow velocity), by means of direct numerical simulation. The configuration is referred to as a concave curved cylinder with incoming flow aligned with the plane of curvature and towards the inner face of the cylinder. Wake flows behind this configuration are known to be complex, but have so far only been studied at low $Re$. This is the first direct numerical simulation investigation of the turbulent wake behind the concave configuration, from which we reveal new and interesting wake dynamics, and present in-depth physical interpretations. Similar to the low-$Re$ cases, the turbulent wake behind a concave curved cylinder is a multi-regime and multi-frequency flow. However, in addition to the coexisting flow regimes reported at lower $Re$, we observe a new transitional flow regime at $Re=3900$. The flow field in this transitional regime is dominated not by von Kármán-type vortex shedding, but by periodic asymmetric helical vortices. Such vortex pairs exist also in some other wake flows, but are then non-periodic. Inspections reveal that the periodic motion of the asymmetric helical vortices is induced by vortex shedding in its neighbouring oblique shedding regime. The oblique shedding regime is in turn influenced by the transitional regime, resulting in a unified and remarkably low dominating frequency in both flow regimes. Owing to this synchronized frequency, the new wake dynamics in the transitional regime might easily be overlooked. In the near wake, two distinct peaks are observed in the time-averaged axial velocity distribution along the curved cylinder span, while only one peak was observed at lower $Re$. The presence of the additional peak is ascribed to a strong favourable base pressure gradient along the cylinder span. It is noteworthy that the axially directed base flow exceeded the incoming velocity behind a substantial part of the quarter-ring and even persisted upwards along the straight vertical extension. As a by-product of our study, we find that a straight vertical extension of 16 cylinder diameters is required in order to avoid any adverse effects from the upper boundary of the flow domain.

In the context of many applications of turbulent multi-phase flows, knowledge of the dispersed phase size distribution and its evolution is critical to predicting important macroscopic features. We develop a large eddy simulation (LES) model that can predict the turbulent transport and evolution of size distributions, for a specific subset of applications in which the dispersed phase can be assumed to consist of spherical droplets, and occurring at low volume fraction. We use a population dynamics model for polydisperse droplet distributions specifically adapted to a LES framework including a model for droplet breakup due to turbulence, neglecting coalescence consistent with the assumed small dispersed phase volume fractions. We model the number density fields using an Eulerian approach for each bin of the discretized droplet size distribution. Following earlier methods used in the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes framework, the droplet breakup due to turbulent fluctuations is modelled by treating droplet–eddy collisions as in kinetic theory of gases. Existing models assume the scale of droplet–eddy collision to be in the inertial range of turbulence. In order to also model smaller droplets comparable to or smaller than the Kolmogorov scale we extend the breakup kernels using a structure function model that smoothly transitions from the inertial to the viscous range. The model includes a dimensionless coefficient that is fitted by comparing predictions in a one-dimensional version of the model with a laboratory experiment of oil droplet breakup below breaking waves. After initial comparisons of the one-dimensional model to measurements of oil droplets in an axisymmetric jet, it is then applied in a three-dimensional LES of a jet in cross-flow with large oil droplets of a single size being released at the source of the jet. We model the concentration fields using $N_{d}=15$ bins of discrete droplet sizes and solve scalar transport equations for each bin. The resulting droplet size distributions are compared with published experimental data, and good agreement for the relative size distribution is obtained. The LES results also enable us to quantify size distribution variability. We find that the probability distribution functions of key quantities such as the total surface area and the Sauter mean diameter of oil droplets are highly variable, some displaying strong non-Gaussian intermittent behaviour.

When shallow water flows over uneven bathymetry, the water surface is modulated. This type of problem has been revisited numerous times since it was first studied by Lord Kelvin in 1886. Our study analytically examines currents whose unperturbed velocity profile $U(z)$ follows a power law $z^{q}$, flowing over a three-dimensional uneven bed. This particular form of $U$, which can model a miscellany of realistic flows, allows explicit analytical solutions. Arbitrary bed shapes can readily be imposed via Fourier’s theorem provided their steepness is moderate. Three-dimensional vorticity–bathymetry interaction effects are evident when the flow makes an oblique angle with a sinusoidally corrugated bed. Streamlines are found to twist and the fluid particle drift is redirected away from the direction of the unperturbed current. Furthermore, a perturbation technique is developed which satisfies the bottom boundary condition to arbitrary order also for large-amplitude obstructions which penetrate well into the current profile. This introduces higher-order harmonics of the bathymetry amplitude. States of resonance for first- and higher-order harmonics are readily calculated. Although the method is theoretically restricted to bathymetries of moderate inclination, a wide variety of steeper obstructions are satisfactorily represented by the method, even provoking occurrences of recirculation. All expressions are analytically explicit and sequential fast Fourier transformations ensure quick and easy computation for arbitrary three-dimensional bathymetries. A method for separating near and far fields ensures computational convergence under the appropriate radiation condition.

In this study, the behaviours of subgrid-scale (SGS) turbulence are investigated with direct numerical simulations when an isotropic turbulence is brought to interact with imposed rapid waves. A partition of the velocity field is used to decompose the SGS stress into three parts, namely, the turbulent part $\unicode[STIX]{x1D749}^{T}$, the wave-induced part $\unicode[STIX]{x1D749}^{W}$ and the cross-interaction part $\unicode[STIX]{x1D749}^{C}$. Under strong wave straining, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D749}^{T}$ is found to follow the Kolmogorov scaling $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}_{c}^{2/3}$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}_{c}$ is the filter width. Based on the linear Airy wave theory, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D749}^{W}$ and the filtered strain-rate tensor due to the wave motion, $\tilde{\unicode[STIX]{x1D64E}}^{W}$, are found to have different phases, posing a difficulty in applying the usual eddy-viscosity model. On the other hand, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D749}^{T}$ and the filtered strain-rate tensor due to the turbulent motion, $\tilde{\unicode[STIX]{x1D64E}}^{T}$, are only weakly wave-phase-dependent and could be well related by an eddy-viscosity model. The linear wave theory is also used to describe the vertical distributions of SGS statistics driven by the wave-induced motion. The predictions are in good agreement with the direct numerical simulation results. The budget equation for the turbulent SGS kinetic energy shows that the transport terms related to turbulence are important near the free surface and they compensate the imbalance between the energy flux and the SGS energy dissipation.

We perform an experimental analysis of co-current, stratified wavy pipe flow, with the aim of investigating the effect of small scale wave breaking (microscale breaking) on the airflow. Particle image velocimetry is applied simultaneously in the gas and liquid phases. Active wave breaking is identified by high levels of vorticity on the leeward side of individual waves, and the statistics of the airflow above breaking and non-breaking waves are extracted from the gas-phase velocity fields. Keeping the liquid superficial velocity constant ($U_{sl}=0.1~\text{m}~\text{s}^{-1}$), we consider two experimental cases of different gas flow rates. The lowest flow rate ($U_{sg}=1.85~\text{m}~\text{s}^{-1}$) is slightly higher than the onset of microscale breaking, while the higher flow rate ($U_{sg}=2.20~\text{m}~\text{s}^{-1}$) is within the regime where wave breaking is observed to be frequent, and the root-mean-square interface elevation $\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}_{rms}$ is independent of gas flow rate. Results show that for the lowest gas flow rate considered, active wave breaking has a stabilizing effect on the airflow above the waves, reducing the sheltered region on the leeward side of the wave and the turbulence above the wave crest compared with non-breaking waves at similar steepness. At the higher gas flow rate the effect of active wave breaking is found to be small, and the main geometrical properties of the waves are found to dominate the evolution of the separated flow region.

The effect of an electric field on the coalescence of two water droplets suspended in an insulating oil (castor oil) in the non-coalescence regime is investigated. Unlike the immediate breakup of the bridge, as reported in earlier studies, e.g. Ristenpart et al. (Nature, vol. 461 (7262), 2009, pp. 377–380), the non-coalescence observed in our experiments indicate that at strong fields the droplets exhibit a tendency to coalesce, the intervening bridge thickens whereafter the bridge dramatically begins to thin, initiating non-coalescence. Numerical simulations using the boundary integral method are able to explain the physical mechanism of thickening of this bridge followed by thinning and non-coalescence. The underlying reason is the competing meridional and azimuthal curvatures which affect the pressure inside the bridge to become either positive or negative under the effect of electric field induced Maxwell stresses. Velocity and pressure profiles confirm this hypothesis and we are able to predict this behaviour of transitory coalescence followed by non-coalescence.

The most important unanswered questions in turbulence regard the nature of turbulent flow in the limit of infinite Reynolds number. The Princeton superpipe (PSP) data comprise 26 velocity profiles that cover three orders of magnitude in the Reynolds number from $Re=19\,639$, to $Re=20\,088\,000$ based on pipe radius and pipe centreline velocity. In this paper classical mixing length theory is combined with a new mixing length model of the turbulent shear stress to solve the streamwise momentum equation and the solution is used to approximate the PSP velocity profiles. The model velocity profile is uniformly valid from the wall to the pipe centreline and comprises five free parameters that are selected through a minimization process to provide an accurate approximation to each of the 26 profiles. The model profile is grounded in the momentum equation and allows the velocity derivative, Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy production to be studied. The results support the conclusion that logarithmic velocity behaviour near the wall is not present in the data below a pipe Reynolds number somewhere between $Re=59\,872$, and $Re=87\,150$. Above $Re=87\,150$, the data show a very clear, nearly logarithmic, region. But even at the highest Reynolds numbers there is still a weak algebraic dependence of the intermediate portion of the velocity profile on both the near-wall and outer flow length scales. One of the five parameters in the model profile is equivalent to the well-known Kármán constant, $k$. The parameter $k$ increases almost monotonically from $k=0.4034$ at $Re=87\,150$ to $k=0.4190$ at $Re=20\,088\,000$, with an average value, $k=0.4092$. The variation of the remaining four model parameters is relatively small and, with all five parameters fixed at average values, the model profile reproduces the entire velocity data set and the wall friction reasonably well. With optimal values of the parameters used for each model profile, the fit to the PSP survey data is very good. Transforming the model velocity profile using the group, $u/u_{0}\rightarrow ku/u_{0}$, $y^{+}\rightarrow ky^{+}$ and $R_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}\rightarrow kR_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}$ where $R_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}$ is the friction Reynolds number, leads to a reduced expression for the velocity profile. When the reduced profile is cast in outer variables, the physical velocity profile is expressed in terms of $\ln (y/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF})$ and a new shape function $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}(y/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF})$. In the limit of infinite Reynolds number, the velocity profile asymptotes to plug flow with a vanishingly thin viscous wall layer and a continuous derivative everywhere. The shape function evaluated at the pipe centreline is used to produce a new friction law with an additive constant that depends on the Kármán constant and a wall damping length scale.

Flow around a high-speed rotating circular cylinder for $Re\leqslant 500$ is investigated numerically. The Reynolds number is defined as $UD/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ with $U$, $D$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ being the free-stream flow velocity, the diameter of the cylinder and the kinematic viscosity of the fluid, respectively. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of a high rotation rate on the wake flow for a range of Reynolds numbers. Simulations are performed for Reynolds numbers of 100, 150, 200, 250 and 500 and a wide range of rotation rates from 1.6 to 6 with an increment of 0.2. Rotation rate is the ratio of the rotational speed of the cylinder surface to the incoming fluid velocity. A systematic study is performed to investigate the effect of rotation rate on the flow transition to different flow regimes. It is found that there is a transition from a two-dimensional vortex shedding mode to no vortex shedding mode when the rotation rate is increased beyond a critical value for Reynolds numbers between 100 and 200. Further increase in rotation rate results in a transition to three-dimensional flow which is characterized by the presence of finger-shaped (FV) vortices that elongate in the wake of the cylinder and very weak ring-shaped vortices (RV) that wrap the surface of the cylinder. The no vortex shedding mode is not observed at Reynolds numbers greater than or equal to 250 since the flow remains three-dimensional. As the rotation rate is increased further, the occurrence frequency and size of the ring-shaped vortices increases and the flow is dominated by RVs. The RVs become bigger in size and the flow becomes chaotic with increasing rotation rate. A detailed analysis of the flow structures shows that the vortices always exist in pairs and the strength of separated shear layers increases with the increase of rotation rate. A map of flow regimes on a plane of Reynolds number and rotation rate is presented.

We consider the life cycle of an axisymmetric laminar thermal starting from the initial condition of a Gaussian buoyant blob. We find that, as time progresses, the thermal transitions through a number of distinct stages, undergoing several morphological changes before ending up as a vortex ring. Whilst each stage is interesting in its own right, one objective of this study is to set out a consistent mathematical framework under which the entire life cycle can be studied. This allows examination of the transition between the different stages, as well as shedding light on some unsolved questions from previous works. We find that the early stages of formation are key in determining the properties of the final buoyant vortex ring and that, since they occur on a time scale where viscosity has little effect, the final properties of the ring display an independence above a critical Reynolds number. We also find that rings consistently contain the same proportion of the initial heat and have a consistent vorticity flux. By considering the effect of Prandtl number, we show that thermal diffusion can have a significant impact on development, smoothing out the temperature field and inhibiting the generation of vorticity. Finally, by considering the wake left behind as well as the vortex ring that is generated, we observe that the wake can itself roll up to form a second mushroom cap and subsequently a secondary vortex ring that follows the first.
