Based on the fully compressible Navier–Stokes equations, the linear stability of thermal convection in rapidly rotating spherical shells of various radius ratios $\eta$ is studied for a wide range of Taylor number $Ta$, Prandtl number $Pr$ and the number of density scale height $N_\rho$. Besides the classical inertial mode and columnar mode, which are widely studied by the Boussinesq approximation and anelastic approximation, the quasi-geostrophic compressible mode is also identified in a wide range of $N_\rho$ and $Pr$ for all $\eta$ considered, and this mode mainly occurs in the convection with relatively small $Pr$ and large $N_\rho$. The instability processes are classified into five categories. In general, for the specified wavenumber $m$, the parameter space ($Pr, N_\rho$) of the fifth category, in which the base state loses stability via the quasi-geostrophic compressible mode and remains unstable, shrinks as $\eta$ increases. The asymptotic scaling behaviours of the critical Rayleigh numbers $Ra_c$ and corresponding wavenumbers $m_c$ to $Ta$ are found at different $\eta$ for the same instability mode. As $\eta$ increases, the flow stability is strengthened. Furthermore, the linearized perturbation equations and Reynolds–Orr equation are employed to quantitatively analyse the mechanical mechanisms and flow instability mechanisms of different modes. In the quasi-geostrophic compressible mode, the time-derivative term of disturbance density in the continuity equation and the diffusion term of disturbance temperature in the energy equation are found to be critical, while in the columnar and inertial modes, they can generally be ignored. Because the time-derivative term of the disturbance density in the continuity equation cannot be ignored, the anelastic approximation fails to capture the instability mode in the small-$Pr$ and large-$N_\rho$ system, where convection onset is dominated by the quasi-geostrophic compressible mode. However, all the modes are primarily governed by the balance between the Coriolis force and the pressure gradient, based on the momentum equation. Physically, the most important difference between the quasi-geostrophic compressible mode and the columnar mode is the role played by the disturbance pressure. The disturbance pressure performs negative work for the former mode, which appears to stabilize the flow, while it destabilizes the flow for the latter mode. As $\eta$ increases, in the former mode the relative work performed by the disturbance pressure increases and in the latter mode decreases.

The two-dimensional stability of vertically sheared inertial oscillations at ocean fronts is explored through a linear stability analysis and nonlinear simulations. Baroclinic effects reduce the minimum frequency of inertia-gravity waves to an extent determined by the balanced Richardson number ${{Ri}}$ of the front. Below a critical value of ${{Ri}}$, which depends on the strength of the inertial shear, the inertial oscillations become unstable to parametric subharmonic instability (PSI) resulting in growing perturbations that oscillate at half the inertial frequency $f$. Since the critical value is always greater than 1, PSI can occur at fronts stable to symmetric instability. Although modest in weak inertial shear, growth rates exceeding $f/2$ can be achieved for inertial shear greater than or equal to the thermal wind shear. Our formulation allows for non-hydrostatic perturbations and can be applied to initially unstratified geostrophic adjustment problems. We find that PSI will almost totally damp the transient oscillations that arise during geostrophic adjustment. The perturbations gain energy at the expense of the inertial oscillations through ageostrophic shear production. The perturbations then themselves become unstable to secondary Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities creating a pathway by which the inertial oscillations can be dissipated rapidly. In contrast to symmetric and baroclinic instabilities that draw on a front's kinetic or potential energy, PSI acts to increase the energy stored in the balanced front as the convergence and divergence of the eddy-momentum fluxes set up a secondary circulation in the sense to stand up the front.

We study concentration-driven natural convection boundary layers on horizontal surfaces, subjected to a weak, surface normal, uniform blowing velocity $V_i$ for three orders of range of the dimensionless blowing parameter $10^{-8}\le J=Re_x^3/Gr_x\le 10^{-5}$, where $Re_x$ and $Gr_x$ are the local Reynolds and Grashof numbers at the horizontal location $x$, based respectively on $V_i$ and ${\rm \Delta} C$, the concentration difference across the boundary layer. We formulate the integral boundary layer equations, with the assumption of no concentration drop within the species boundary layer, which is valid for weak blowing into the thin species boundary layers that occur at the high Schmidt number ($Sc \simeq 600$) of concentration-driven convection. The equations are then numerically solved to show that the species boundary layer thickness $\delta _d = 1.6\,x(Re_x/Gr_x)^{1/4}$, the velocity boundary layer thickness $\delta _v=\delta _d Sc^{1/5}$, the horizontal velocity $u = V_i(Gr_x/Re_x)^{1/4}f(\eta )$, where $\eta =y/\delta _v$, and the drag coefficient based on $V_i$, $C_D = 2.32/\sqrt {J}$. We find that the vertical profile of the horizontally averaged dimensionless concentration across the boundary layer becomes, surprisingly, independent of the blowing and the species diffusion effects to follow a $Gr_y^{2/3}$ scaling, where $Gr_y$ is the Grashof number based on the vertical location $y$ within the boundary layer. We then show that the above profile matches the experimentally observed mean concentration profile within the boundary layers that form on the top surface of a membrane, when a weak flow is forced gravitationally from below the horizontal membrane that has brine above it and water below it. A similar match between the theoretical scaling of the species boundary layer thickness and its experimentally observed variation is also shown to occur.

We present a local stability analysis of an idealized model of the stratified vortices that appear in geophysical settings. The base flow comprises an axisymmetric vortex with background rotation and an out-of-plane stable stratification, and a radial stratification in the thermal wind balance with the out-of-plane momentum gradient. Solving the local stability equations along fluid particle trajectories in the base flow, the dependence of short-wavelength instabilities on the Schmidt number $Sc$ (ratio between momentum and mass diffusivities) is studied, in the presence of curvature effects. In the diffusion-free limit, the well-known symmetric instability is recovered. In the viscous, double-diffusive regime, instability characteristics are shown to depend on three non-dimensional parameters (including $Sc$), and two different instabilities are identified: (i) a monotonic instability (same as symmetric instability at $Sc = 1$), and (ii) an oscillatory instability (absent at $Sc = 1$). Separating the base flow and perturbation characteristics, two each of base flow and perturbation parameters (apart from $Sc$) are identified, and the entire parameter space is explored for the aforementioned instabilities. In comparison with $Sc = 1$, monotonic and oscillatory instabilities are shown to significantly expand the instability region in the space of base flow parameters as $Sc$ moves away from unity. Neutral stability boundaries on the plane of $Sc$ and a modified gradient Richardson number are then identified for both these instabilities. In the absence of curvature effects, our results are shown to be consistent with previous studies based on normal mode analysis, thus establishing that the local stability approach is well suited to capturing symmetric and double-diffusive instabilities. The paper concludes with a discussion of curvature effects, and the likelihood of monotonic and oscillatory instabilities in typical oceanic settings.

To get an insight into the dynamics of the oceanic surface boundary layer we develop an asymptotic model of the nonlinear dynamics of linearly decaying three-dimensional long-wave perturbations in weakly stratified boundary-layer flows. Although in nature the free-surface boundary layers in the ocean are often weakly stratified due to solar radiation and air entrainment caused by wave breaking, weak stratification has been invariably ignored. Here, we consider an idealized hydrodynamic model, where finite-amplitude three-dimensional perturbations propagate in a horizontally uniform unidirectional weakly stratified shear flow confined to a boundary layer adjacent to the water surface. Perturbations satisfy the no-stress boundary condition at the surface. They are assumed to be long compared with the boundary-layer thickness. Such perturbations have not been studied even in a linear setting. By exploiting the assumed smallness of nonlinearity, wavenumber, viscosity and the Richardson number, on applying triple-deck asymptotic scheme and multiple-scale expansion, we derive in the distinguished limit a novel essentially two-dimensional nonlinear evolution equation, which is the main result of the work. The equation represents a generalization of the two-dimensional Benjamin–Ono equation modified by the explicit account of viscous effects and new dispersion due to weak stratification. It describes perturbation dependence on horizontal coordinates and time, while its vertical structure, to leading order, is given by an explicit analytical solution of the linear boundary value problem. It shows the principal importance of weak stratification for three-dimensional perturbations.

We present an investigation of the fundamental physical processes involved in deep-water gravity wave breaking. Our motivation is to identify the underlying reason causing the deficiency of the eddy viscosity breaking model (EVBM) in predicting surface elevation for strongly nonlinear waves. Owing to the limitation of experimental methods in the provision of high-resolution flow information, we propose a numerical methodology by developing an EVBM enclosed standalone fully nonlinear quasi-potential (FNP) flow model and a coupled FNP plus Navier–Stokes flow model. The numerical models were firstly verified with a wave train subject to modulational instability, then used to simulate a series of broad-banded focusing wave trains under non-, moderate- and strong-breaking conditions. A systematic analysis was carried out to investigate the discrepancies of numerical solutions produced by the two models in surface elevation and other important physical properties. It is found that EVBM predicts accurately the energy dissipated by breaking and the amplitude spectrum of free waves in terms of magnitude, but fails to capture accurately breaking induced phase shifting. The shift of phase grows with breaking intensity and is especially strong for high-wavenumber components. This is identified as a cause of the upshift of the wave dispersion relation, which increases the frequencies of large-wavenumber components. Such a variation drives large-wavenumber components to propagate at nearly the same speed, which is significantly higher than the linear dispersion levels. This suppresses the instant dispersive spreading of harmonics after the focal point, prolonging the lifespan of focused waves and expanding their propagation space.

We investigate and compare various types of acoustic trapped modes (TMs) in resonator–waveguide systems. The goal is to understand the commonality and difference between the mechanisms of common (symmetry protected, invisibility protected and symmetry–periodicity protected) and accidental TMs, occurring continuously and discretely in the resonator length–frequency two-parameter space. The latter type cannot yet be explained via an operator decomposition. Here, all TMs are explained in the same way by analysing why and how the propagating-wave loops in the eigenfunctions can satisfy the eigenmode condition (loop magnitude and phase constraints for closure) and the wave-trapping condition (loop zero-radiation condition) simultaneously. Firstly, the unified analysis reveals the commonality that one or multiple coupled propagating-wave loops satisfy TM conditions, and the difference. In common TMs, the loop zero radiation is independent of the single loop phase constraint that selects the TM frequency as a continuous function of resonator length. On the other hand, loop zero radiation in accidental TMs depends on the loop phase constraints and there are two phase constraints. Only at the crossing points of the two phase constraints can zero-radiation loops be ensured. Secondly, in contrast to previous studies, it suggests that modal degeneracy, avoided crossing and resonance-width bifurcation are not the mechanisms of accidental TMs.

The present study investigates the modal stability of the steady incompressible flow inside a toroidal pipe for values of the curvature $\delta$ (ratio between pipe and torus radii) approaching zero, i.e. the limit of a straight pipe. The global neutral stability curve for $10^{-7} \leq \delta \leq ~10^{-2}$ is traced using a continuation algorithm. Two different families of unstable eigenmodes are identified. For curvatures below $1.5 \times 10^{-6}$, the critical Reynolds number ${{Re}}_{cr}$ is proportional to $\delta ^{-1/2}$. Hence, the critical Dean number is constant, ${{De}}_{cr} = 2\,{{Re}}_{cr}\,\sqrt {\delta } \approx 113$. This behaviour confirms that the Hagen–Poiseuille flow is stable to infinitesimal perturbations for any Reynolds number and suggests that a continuous transition from the curved to the straight pipe takes place as far as it regards the stability properties. For low values of the curvature, an approximate self-similar solution for the steady base flow can be obtained at a fixed Dean number. Exploiting the proposed semi-analytic scaling in the stability analysis provides satisfactory results.

Understanding the effect of intricate surface wettability conditions on microswimmers is crucial for precisely navigating them across narrow microcirculatory networks. Here, we adopt the spherical squirmer model and Navier slip condition to delineate the microswimmer locomotion under a Poiseuille flow in a slit microchannel. Through a combined analytical–numerical approach utilizing bispherical coordinates and the superposition technique, we resolve the slip-modulated simultaneous hydrodynamic interaction with substrate boundaries. Phase portraits reveal that slip significantly alters propulsion mechanisms, destabilizing centreline stable oscillations of pullers beyond a threshold slip length. Superhydrophobic surfaces suppress near-wall rheotaxis states but preserve centreline focusing, facilitating slip-assisted directed transport without surface accumulation. Under strong background flows, subcritical Hopf bifurcation emerges for pullers at a critical slip length, transitioning dynamics from coexisting stable and unstable states to purely unstable behaviour. Contrastingly, for pushers, slip causes a transition from unstable to either stable or fixed-amplitude oscillations. Increased slip length reduces hydrodynamic repulsion on pullers from the walls by enhancing rotational velocity near the walls, whereas it counteracts the torque that causes unstable oscillations of pushers. Three-dimensional analysis of the trajectories reveals the significant role of the out-of-plane orientation of the microswimmer in its transitions between different swimming states. The presented regime maps offer parametric combinations for specific motion behaviours, guiding the development of smart microfluidic drug delivery systems and preventing biofilm deposition in biomedical devices.

The fundamental resonance (FR) in the nonlinear phase of the boundary-layer transition to turbulence appears when a dominant planar instability mode reaches a finite amplitude and the low-amplitude oblique travelling modes with the same frequency as the dominant mode, together with the stationary streak modes, undergo the strongest amplification among all the Fourier components. This regime may be the most efficient means to trigger the natural transition in hypersonic boundary layers. In this paper, we aim to reveal the intrinsic mechanism of the FR in the weakly nonlinear framework based on the large-Reynolds-number asymptotic technique. It is found that the FR is, in principle, a triad resonance among a dominant planar fundamental mode, a streak mode and an oblique mode. In the major part of the boundary layer, the nonlinear interaction of the fundamental mode and the streak mode seeds the growth of the oblique mode, whereas the interaction of the oblique mode and the fundamental mode drives the roll components (transverse and lateral velocity) of the streak mode, which leads to a stronger amplification of the streamwise component of the streak mode due to the lift-up mechanism. This asymptotic analysis clearly shows that the dimensionless growth rates of the streak and oblique modes are the same order of magnitude as the dimensionless amplitude of the fundamental mode $(\bar {\epsilon }_{10})$, and the amplitude of the streak mode is $O(\bar {\epsilon }_{10}^{-1})$ greater than that of the oblique mode. The main-layer solution of the streamwise velocity, spanwise velocity and temperature of both the streak and the oblique modes become singular as the wall is approached, and so a viscous wall layer appears underneath. The wall layer produces an outflux velocity to the main-layer solution, inclusion of which leads to an improved asymptotic theory whose accuracy is confirmed by comparing with the calculations of the nonlinear parabolised stability equations (NPSEs) at moderate Reynolds numbers and the secondary instability analysis (SIA) at sufficiently high Reynolds numbers.

Direct numerical simulations of channel flow and temporal boundary layer at a Reynolds number $Re_{\tau } = 1500$ are used to assess the scale-by-scale mechanisms of wall turbulence. From the peak of turbulence production embedded at the small scales of the near-wall region, spatially ascending reverse cascades are generated that move through self-similar eddies growing in size with the wall distance. These fluxes are followed by spatially ascending forward cascades through detached eddies thus reaching sufficiently small scales where eventually scale energy is dissipated. This phenomenology is shared by both boundary layer and channel flow and is recognized as a robust physical feature characterizing wall turbulence in general. Specific features related to the flow configuration are indeed identified in the outer region. In particular, the central region of channels is characterized by a generalized Richardson energy cascade where large scales are in equilibrium with small scales at different wall distances through a combined forward cascade and spatial flux. On the contrary, the interface region of boundary layers is characterized by an almost two-dimensional physics where spatially ascending reverse cascades sustain long and wide interface structures with a forward cascade that survives only in the wall-normal scales. The overall scenario consists in a variety of scale motions that while protruding from the turbulent core towards the external region, squeeze at the interface thus sustaining vertical shear in a thin layer. The observed multidimensional physics sheds light on the complex interactions between outer entrainment and near-wall self-sustaining mechanisms with possible repercussions for theories.

The feedback between particle-size segregation and rheology in bidisperse granular flows is studied using the Stokes’ problem configuration. A method of lines scheme is implemented to solve the coupled momentum and segregation equations for a normally graded particle size distributed bulk at constant solids volume fraction. The velocity profiles develop quickly into a transient state, decoupled from segregation yet determined by the particle size. From this transient state, the velocity profile changes due to the particles’ relative movement, which redistributes the frictional response, hence its rheology. Additionally, the particles’ relative friction is modified via a frictional coefficient ratio, by analogy with the particles’ size ratio. While positive values of this coefficient exacerbate the nonlinearity of the velocity profiles induced by size differences, negative values dampen this behaviour. The numerical solutions reproduce well the analytical solutions for the velocity profile, which can be obtained from the steady-state conditions of the momentum and segregation equations for the transient and steady states, respectively. Segregation–momentum balances and four characteristic time scales can be established to propose two non-dimensional quantities, including specific Schmidt and Péclet numbers that describe broadly the segregation–rheology feedback. The proposed scheme, theoretical solutions and non-dimensional numbers offer a combined approach to understand segregation and flow dynamics within a granular bulk, extensible across many flow configurations.

High-resolution simulations of gravity currents in the lock-exchange configuration are conducted to study the flow within the head. The simulations exhibit the geometric features of the head as reported in the laboratory experiments and numerical simulations, and provide more detailed information on the flow within the head of a gravity current. The flow in the lower part of the head, where the lobes and clefts are forming at the leading edge, is qualitatively different from but interconnected to the flow in the upper part of the head, where steepening bulges are protruding from the upright surface above the clefts. Interestingly, regions of positive and negative streamwise vorticity are observed not only in the lower part of the head but also in the upper part of the head at staggered spanwise locations. We have shown that both the streamwise vorticity at the leading edge of the lobes in the lower part of the head and the streamwise vorticity at the steepening bulges in the upper part of the head are contributed from the twisting of spanwise vorticity into the streamwise direction, due to the geometric features of the lobes and the steepening bulges, and contributed from the baroclinic production of vorticity. Our results from visualization using tracers indicate that the ambient fluid ingested in and rising from the clefts is being swept towards the leading edge of a gravity current before being carried upwards from the leading edge to the upright surface above the left and right neighbouring lobes. Furthermore, the heavy fluid inside a lobe may descend towards the bottom boundary, move forward towards the leading edge and outwards towards the neighbouring clefts, and ultimately be carried upwards to the upright surface above the left and right neighbouring lobes. With the knowledge that the erosive power of a gravity current is concentrated in the head region, it is plausible that the bed material, once resuspended by a gravity current, may be lifted up away from the bottom boundary and be dispersed in both the streamwise and spanwise directions. The present study complements existing findings in the literature and provides new insights into the three-dimensional flow field within the head of a gravity current.

We examine the vapour cloud of a pure liquid evaporating from a millimetric cylindrical well/cavity/aperture. This is accomplished by injecting the liquid up a vertical pipe towards its outlet onto a horizontal substrate. The injection is halted before the liquid surpasses the substrate level. The resulting final state is a meniscus at or near the pipe's end. The analysis is realised by vapour interferometry (side view over the substrate) closely intertwined with simulations (including Stefan flow), which also help to fill up certain gaps in the measurements and provide computed evaporation rates. Comparison with experiment is facilitated by converting the computed vapour clouds into interferometric images, especially helpful when an inverse (Abel-type) conversion is difficult. Experiments are conducted in both microgravity (via parabolic flights) and ground conditions, thus enabling direct assessment of the role of gravity. The contrast is accentuated by a working liquid with heavy vapour (refrigerant HFE-7100), when instead of being flattened on ground the vapour cloud assumes a roughly hemispherical shape in microgravity. Furthermore, a non-trivial vapour-cloud response to the flight ${\rm g}$-jitter (residual gravity oscillations) is unveiled, ${\rm g}$-jitter vibrations posing a challenge for interferometry itself. A number of undesired but curious side issues are revealed. One concerns vapour formed deep inside the pipe during rapid injection and subsequently ejected into the field of view, which is detected experimentally and quantified in terms of vapour Taylor dispersion in the pipe. Others are an injection volume anomaly and parasitic postinjection specifically observed in microgravity conditions.

We explore basic mechanisms for the instability of finite-amplitude interfacial gravity waves through a two-dimensional linear stability analysis of the periodic and irrotational plane motion of the interface between two unbounded homogeneous fluids of different density in the absence of background currents. The flow domains are conformally mapped into two half-planes, where the time-varying interface is always mapped onto the real axis. This unsteady conformal mapping technique with a suitable representation of the interface reduces the linear stability problem to a generalized eigenvalue problem, and allows us to accurately compute the growth rates of unstable disturbances superimposed on steady waves for a wide range of parameters. Numerical results show that the wave-induced Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) instability due to the tangential velocity jump across the interface produced by the steady waves is the major instability mechanism. Any disturbances whose dominant wavenumbers are greater than a critical value grow exponentially. This critical wavenumber that depends on the steady wave steepness and the density ratio can be approximated by a local KH stability analysis, where the spatial variation of the wave-induced currents is neglected. It is shown, however, that the growth rates need to be found numerically with care and the successive collisions of eigenvalues result in the wave-induced KH instability. In addition, the present study extends the previous results for the small-wavenumber instability, such as modulational instability, of relatively small-amplitude steady waves to finite-amplitude ones.

Recent theoretical progress using multiscale asymptotic analysis has revealed various possible regimes of stratified turbulence. Notably, buoyancy transport can either be dominated by advection or diffusion, depending on the effective Péclet number of the flow. Two types of asymptotic models have been proposed, which yield measurably different predictions for the characteristic vertical velocity and length scale of the turbulent eddies in both diffusive and non-diffusive regimes. The first, termed a ‘single-scale model’, is designed to describe flow structures having large horizontal and small vertical scales, while the second, termed a ‘multiscale model’, additionally incorporates flow features with small horizontal scales, and reduces to the single-scale model in their absence. By comparing predicted vertical velocity scaling laws with direct numerical simulation data, we show that the multiscale model correctly captures the properties of strongly stratified turbulence within regions dominated by small-scale isotropic motions, whose volume fraction decreases as the stratification increases. Meanwhile its single-scale reduction accurately describes the more orderly, layer-like, quiescent flow outside those regions.

A cylindrical liquid thread readily destabilizes into a series of drops due to capillary instability, which is also responsible for undesirable bead-on-fibre structures observed when coating a thin fibre. In this experimental study, we show how a falling liquid thread can be stabilized by internally distorting the cross-sectional shape using two vertically hung fibres. Below a critical flow rate $Q_c$, the dual-fibre system deforms the falling thread into a smooth column with a non-circular cross-section, thereby suppressing instability. Above $Q_{{c}}$, the cylindrical thread is left undeformed by the fibres and destabilizes into beads connected by a stable, non-cylindrical film. An empirical stability threshold is identified showing that flow delays the onset of capillary instability when compared with a marginally stable quasi-static coating. When the flow is unstable $Q>Q_c$, the bead velocity $v$ obeys a simple scaling law that is well supported by our experiments over a large parameter range. This suppression technique can be extended to other slender geometries, such as a ribbon, which shows similar qualitative results but exhibits a different stability threshold due to spontaneous dewetting about its short edge.

A steady granular flow experiment was performed in a confined annular shear cell to examine how the wall friction coefficient $\mu _w$ degrades from the intrinsic sliding friction coefficient $f$ between the grains and the container wall. Two existing models are invoked to examine the decay trend of $\mu _w/f$ in view of the ratio of shear velocity to the square root of granular temperature $\chi$ (Artoni & Richard, Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 115, 2015, 158001) and the ratio of grain angular and slip velocities $\varOmega$ (Yang & Huang, Granul. Matt., vol. 18, issue 4, 2016, p. 77), respectively. As both models correlate $\mu _w/f$ to different flow properties, a hidden relation is speculated between $\chi$ and $\varOmega$, or equivalently, between the granular temperature and the grain rotation speed. We used experiment data to confirm and reveal this hidden relation. From there, a unified $\mu _w/f-\chi$ model is proposed with physical meanings for the model coefficients and to show general agreement with the measured trend. Hence we may conclude that both the fluctuations in grain translations and their mean rotation are the crucial yet equivalent mechanisms to degrade $\mu _w/f$.
