1. Treatment in bulk of the grain of wheat, barley, winter oats and spring oats with a proprietary dust, and two experimental dusts A and B which contained organic compounds of mercury, had no harmful effect on germination when drilling followed shortly after treatment. In the case of spring oats, drilling was delayed 7½ weeks after treatment without any harmful effects on germination.

2. The proprietary and experimental dusts both proved effective in controlling bunt disease of wheat, and the leaf-stripe and net-blotch diseases of barley.

3. In the case of barley, the proprietary and experimental dusts both increased the speed of “brairding” but not the final plant population. This hastening of seedling growth did not lead to a higher yield.

4. In the case of winter oats, only the experimental dust A gave a significant increase in plant population and a satisfactory control of the loose smut disease.

1. The results are presented of a survey of early cut hays, by the tripod and ground-cured methods, from fifteen ryegrass swards and six ryegrass-clover swards in Northern Ireland.

2. The effect of date of cutting on quality is discussed.

3. The losses in conservation at two centres included in this survey are presented. Losses of 15·9 and 13·3% are recorded for the tripod method.

4. A trial designed to produce high-quality hays from specially managed swards by these two methods is described. The results obtained in relation to conservation losses and the digestibilities of these hays are considered. Field losses of dry matter ranged from 3 to 16·5% for the tripod method and 9–27% for the ground-cured. The tripod hays had starch equivalents of 47, 48·2 and 51·5; those of the corresponding ground-cured hays were 41·5, 38·2 and 51·8.

5. It is suggested that the tripod method as applied to swards of the type used in the second experiment offers a means of securing a high degree of conservation.

Thirteen experiments on spring cereals were carried out from 1952 to 1954 to compare broadcasting with combine-drilling for nitrophosphate and for mixtures of superphosphate plus equivalent nitrogen. Broadcast nitrophosphate was of little value; drilled dressings were much more effective. Superphosphate drilled with the seed produced consistently higher yields than broadcast superphosphate. Superphosphate plus equivalent nitrogen gave higher average yields than nitrophosphate both when broadcast and when drilled. When the dressings were broadcast, superphosphate was markedly superior to nitrophosphate, but when the fertilizers were drilled with the seed, average yields with superphosphate were only a little higher than with nitrophosphate.

Nitrophosphates may be substituted for mixtures containing water-soluble phosphorus for cereals providing that they are drilled with the seed. Since nitrophosphates do not make cereals grow as rapidly as does superphosphate, even when drilled with the seed, such materials may give poor crops in conditions where the plants need a rapid start. The nitrophosphate tested contained rather more than one-quarter of its phosphorus in water-soluble form; the improved early growth observed where nitrophosphate was combine-drilled may have been largely due to this fraction of the fertilizer.

An account is given of methods which have been employed in laboratory and field studies of the actions of rolls on the soil. These studies have revealed little that is remarkable or unexpected concerning the actions of rolls on the soil, but they have clearly demonstrated that the exact actions of rolls differ widely according to the circumstances in which they are employed. When rolling is carried out in field experiments, it is necessary to perform tests to measure the exact effects produced on the soil. In this way it should gradually become more apparent when and how rolling is likely to be beneficial.

Of the methods which have been described, the last two, viz. tests of the consolidation, moisture content and tilth by means of a sampling tube, and of the mechanical resistance to the penetration of a probe with the automatic “resistance” recorder, are well adapted to use in field experiments. These methods are being used in many field experiments involving cultivations, and it is hoped that it may at some time in the future be possible by such methods to relate cultivations and crop yields through a knowledge of the soil structure.

A field trial was conducted during 1982–3 and 1983–4 on a loamy sand soil to study the effect of magnesium application to the soil and in foliar spray in relation to various levels of nitrogen on the growth and yield of wheat. Results indicate that wheat responde significantly to magnesium application only at the higher level of nitrogen. At the higher level of N (120 kg/ha), the response of wheat to magnesium application (10 kg/ha) to the soil and in foliar spray was 56 and 68 kg grain/kg Mg, respectively. However, the corresponding values at a low level of N (60 kg/ha) were only 14 and 15 kg grain/kg Mg. Magnesium at the higher level of N increased the chlorophyll content of leaves, leaf area index, interception of photosynthetically active radiation, number of ear-bearing tillers and number of grains per ear. The higher level of magnesium (20 kg/ha) did not result in extra beneficial effect compared with the lower level of Mg (10 kg/ha). Maximum interception of photosynthetically active radiation by the wheat canopy coincided with the attainment of maximum leaf area index and chlorophyll content of leaves at 90 days after sowing.

In view of the celebration of the ‘International Year of Millets,’ millets are popularizing sustainable agricultural output amid challenging climates and nourishing adequately as food and feed. The extent of scientific intervention is the foundation for designing, promoting and popularizing neglected crops on social platforms. Planning future directions and adaptive strategies largely require regular evaluation of research efforts to identify hotspots and research gaps, as identified in the present study by creating a robust text-mining approach that integrates scientometrics using PubMed citation data. Keyword mining reveals that India and China are the leading publication centres on millets, possibly due to their large proportion of cultivation and indigenous nature. It further reveals that the pearl millet is the predominant one, followed by foxtail and finger millet, suggesting that most research is confined to them only; however, other millets, still have a research gap in comparison. The word abiotic stress is associated with high frequency in millet research due to its adaptive nature amid climate change. Thematic representation explored the novel concept of millet's utility as a probiotic and millet bran to ensure nutrient–cereal properties based on the persistency of keywords throughput research progression; however, incurious consumption is associated with harmful ochratoxin. Bio-concept mining and knowledge graph generation divided the millet research output into four large domains, which provides a largely covered bio-concepts for millet research and co-concurrence of emerging bio-concepts to intense progress and finds an adequate literature gap to improve millet research for sustained growth and equilibrate biodiversity.

The aim of the study was to investigate the suitability of subsurface and surface drip irrigation methods in rice farming. The field studies were carried out in split plots in randomized blocks trial design, with three repetitions during 2019 and 2020 in Thrace Region/Türkiye. Irrigation methods, surface drip (DI), subsurface drip (SDI) and conventional flooding (CF) were the main treatments; however, water amounts (I1: Class A-pan evaporation rate × 1.00, I2: Class A-pan evaporation rate × 1.25, I3: Class A-pan evaporation rate × 1.50) were designed as sub-treatments of the study. The results of the statistical analyses indicated that, the rice grain yield was significantly (P < 0.01) affected by the amount of the irrigation water. According to the results; while two different drip irrigation methods did not make a difference to yield and yield components, the difference between drip irrigation and CF was significant (P < 0.01). While the grain yields reached 10.3 and 8.70 t/ha under conditions of CF control during 2019 and 2020, the highest yield values obtained from plots with drip irrigation system and the highest Class A-pan evaporation rate x pan coefficient of 1.50 were 8.10 and 6.90 t/ha during the same two study years, respectively. However, much more effective use of water was observed under conditions of drip system application providing approximately 60–70% water saving v. 20–25% yield loss. In addition, economic analysis results indicated a higher relative profit rate of 1.66 in the case of drip irrigation than 1.41 under CF application.

While climate change mainly applies to global warming and subsequent drought periods, freezing periods also are changing and may trigger genetic adaptation. However, there are few prospective, experimental demonstrations. This paper investigates how effectively genetic frost-resistant variants can respond differently to frost periods, especially in farmers’ fields where various other selection pressures occur. An experiment using Avena fatua variants was set up in the field over 8 years of winter crop rotation. The frequency of each variant identified by their leaf isozymes was estimated every year. Six years were necessary to observe a weak trend towards an increased frequency of the frost-resistant phenotype, while the other variants had apparent erratic behaviour. Selection of the frost-resistant variant was challenged by irregular low temperature selection pressure, differential dormancy, germination and seed production, and possibly herbicide sensitivity that mitigated the expression of the selection response. This experiment shows how plant polymorphism and farmers’ practices that superimpose habitat unpredictability diversify possible responses to selection pressures and delay adaptation. However, if climate change brings both higher mean temperatures and extreme values, changes of apparent plant phenology could happen for weeds species displaying the appropriate genetic variability within the time-frame of farmers’ career, thus necessitating correlative adaptation of farming practices.

Noy-Meir's simple but insightful model of grazing-system dynamics was used to draw broader inferences from empirical data generated by a 17-year field trial with beef cattle grazing a Mediterranean grassland in northern Israel. After calibration of its parameters against the field results, the model predictions were tested against an independent set of data obtained from the study site; they were within acceptable deviations from the inherently noisy field data. The calibrated model was used to analyse the effects of changes to two key grazing-management factors – stocking density and early-season grazing deferment – on biomass dynamics and forage consumption. The simulated results were used to calculate forage deficits and supplementary feed requirements for optimum herd performance during the growth (‘green’) season and throughout the year. The results revealed a critical stocking density of 0.7 Animal Units (AU)/ha, above which early-season deferment reduced the amount of supplementary feed required to maintain the optimum production of the herd. Optimum stocking is higher when the grassland is used mainly in the highly nutritious green season. Responses of the strongly seasonal Mediterranean grassland to the interaction between stocking density and early-season grazing deferment were expressed by a calibrated model, in terms that determine the efficiency of forage supplementation of the herd during the green season and throughout the year.

Glutamine synthetase (GS) and glutamate synthase (GOGAT) play a central role in plant nitrogen (N) metabolism. In order to study the effect of powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici, Bgt) on N metabolism, field experiments were carried out to evaluate GS and GOGAT activity, GS expression and grain protein content (GPC) in susceptible (Xi'nong 979) and resistant (Zhengmai 103) wheat cultivars under three treatments. The three treatments were no inoculation (CK), inoculated once with Bgt (MP) and inoculated nine times with Bgt (HP). For Xi'nong 979, the activities of GS and GOGAT in grains as well as GS activity in flag leaves increased at 10–15 days after anthesis (DAA), and decreased significantly at 15 or 20–30 DAA in HP and MP. However, GS activity in grains decreased from 20 DAA, which was later than that of flag leaves (15 DAA). At the same time, GS expression in grains was up-regulated at early stage, with GS1 at 10 DAA and GS2 at 15 DAA, followed by a continuous down-regulation. This result indicated that GS and GOGAT activity as well as GS expression were inhibited by powdery mildew, indicating that N metabolism in grains was inhibited at 20–30 DAA. The current study also found out that the yield of the susceptible cultivar decreased significantly, while its GPC increased obviously in HP. It was shown that the increase of GPC was not due to the enhancement of N metabolism, but due to the passive increase caused by yield reduction.

This working group, which is concerned with operational research methods and applications to agricultural science in its broad meaning (i.e. including Forest Management and Fisheries), was formed in 2003 within the European Association of Operational Research Societies (EURO). The first meeting of the group was held at the former Silsoe Research Institute two years ago. The next meeting will be held in 2007 within the XXII EURO Conference in Prague. The group intends to start regular meetings at approximately yearly intervals in association with the EURO Conferences. The second meeting of the working group, chaired by Dr. L. M. Plà of the University of Lleida and organized as a stream within the XXI EURO Conference, was held at the University of Iceland in Reykjavík from 3rd–5th July 2006 where the following papers were read.

Maize is one of the three staple foods in the world. The white variety represents 60% of the maize importation with a world consumption of 1125 million tons in 2019/2020. Currently, new technologies could contribute to the analysis of this seed, supporting quality control and improvement. This study aims to carry out the morphological and proteomic comparison between the hybrid MR2008 and its parental lines LUG03 and CML491 through mass spectrometry and bioinformatics analysis. Herein, we identified that 34.8% of the hybrid proteome differs from the parental proteome. Also, ontological and morphological analyses determined that the hybrid exhibits more characteristics related to CML491 than LUG03, for example, metabolic pathways and enzymes, such as anthocyanidin 3-O-glucosyltransferase (UniProt P16166). This analysis allowed the identification of dominant characters, metabolic pathways and confirms the utility of this methodology in agricultural practices, mainly in processes of selection and quality control of a crop.

Zinc deficiency is a common nutritional problem in calcareous agricultural soils, resulting in reduced crop yield and performance. The effects of zinc sulphate (0 and 40 kg/ha) on seed yield, its components and seed element contents of 21 wheat cultivars were investigated. Zinc sulphate application increased plant height, leaf area index (LAI), flag leaf area, biomass, spike length, number of seeds per spike, seed weight and harvest index (HI). The increase in HI indicates the greater effect of zinc on seed production compared to plant biomass. In most of the cultivars, zinc sulphate application decreased the content of phosphorus and nitrogen in seeds and increased the content of iron and potassium. The cultivars showed significant differences in all the traits measured, indicating the existence of genetic diversity in the cultivars studied. In the second year, which was hotter and drier than the first year, zinc sulphate application reduced the damage caused by drought and heat stress and improved seed yield and quality. The regression fit showed that newer cultivars had lower yields in unfertilized conditions compared to old cultivars and showed their superiority in zinc fertilized conditions. It seems that the newer varieties require more fertilizer because they have been bred on fertile soils.

Quantifying reasonable crop yield gaps and determining potential regions for yield improvement can facilitate regional plant structure adjustment and promote crop production. The current study attempted to evaluate the yield gap in a region at multi-scales through model simulation and farmer investigation. Taking the winter wheat yield gap in the Huang-Huai-Hai farming region (HFR) for the case study, 241 farmers’ fields in four typical high-yield demonstration areas were surveyed to determine the yield limitation index and attainable yield. In addition, the theoretical and realizable yield gap of winter wheat in 386 counties of the HFR was assessed. Results showed that the average field yield of the demonstration plots was 8282 kg/ha, accounting for 0.72 of the potential yield, which represented the highest production in the region. The HFR consists of seven sub-regions designated 2.1–2.7: the largest attainable yield gap existed in the 2.6 sub-region, in the southwest of the HFR, while the smallest was in the 2.2 sub-region, in the northwest of the HFR. With a high irrigated area rate, the yield gap in the 2.2 sub-region could hardly be reduced by increasing irrigation, while a lack of irrigation remained an important limiting factor for narrowing the yield gap in 2.3 sub-region, in the middle of the HFR. Therefore, a multi-scale yield gap evaluation framework integrated with typical field survey and crop model analysis could provide valuable information for narrowing the yield gap.

1. Soil samples were incubated at 60% W.h.c. at 20° C. and leached after 8 and 20 weeks. On subsequent incubation, the rate of nitrate production in the leached samples was greater than that in unleached control soils. The increase in nitrate production seems to be due to an increased rate of ammonification.

2. Adding 100 p.p.m. of nitrate nitrogen to the soil before incubating had no effect on mineralization.

3. Adding a leachate of incubated soil to new soil samples reduced the rate of mineralization on incubation. This reduction is not due to nitrate or any other anion, since deionized leachate was equally effective.

Theory for the non-steady-state diffusion flow of a spheroidal body is discussed and solutions are presented for estimating the time-dependent diffusivities at small and largo times following sowing in soil of germinating soya-bean, cow-pea and blackgram seeds. The validity and also the limitations of the equation for large times to estimate time-dependent diffusivities are discussed. Assuming that the time of germination was at infinity it was possible to reduce the equation for small times to a simple form. Thus, with the help of these two equations it was possible to study changes in the diffusivity of seeds at different soil matric potentials throughout the period, immediately after sowing until germination. The diffusivities showed gradual decrease at 0 bar potential for soya-bean and cow-pea, and increase at – 2 and – 10 bar potentials for soya-bean, cow-pea and blackgram seeds with time. The decrease in diffusivity with time under non-stress soil water condition is explained as predominantly a physiological phenomenon of the seed due to the increase in seed water content with time, while its increase with time under water stress conditions is probably because of the decrease with time of the initially large seed-coat resistance and tortuosity showing small values of diffusivity. The discussion suggests that the role of area of contact on the water uptake of the buried seeds as reported so far is contradictory and, therefore, not convincing.
