On a previous occasion, I have argued that during the two decades preceding the First World War, the French Radical Party, under electoral pressure from the separate and then united Socialist parties of Jaurès and Guesde, began to look for a doctrine around which they could rally to defend their recently acquired hold on power against both the individualists to their right and the collectivists on their left. It was the six-month duration of Léon Bourgeois' purely Radical government of 1895–6 and his Lettres sur le Mouvement Social of 1895, republished in 1896 as a book and entitled Solidarité, that marked the beginning of the belle époque of Radical-socialism and of the Third Republic. It was argued that during the next two decades, Bourgeois' doctrine of Solidarism became for platform, and to a lesser extent, practical political purposes, the official social philosophy of the régime, probably reaching its apotheosis at the time of the Paris World Exhibition of 1900. This pre-eminent position in the doctrinal firmament of France was not achieved without an intensive campaign through a variety of mainly educational pressure groups – to be anticipated in a lay “République des professeurs.” It is the principal channels and people through which this indoctrination was propagated that will be our concern in the pages that follow. However, the activities of the “Universités Populaires”, which were closely allied to the movements discussed here, have been passed over because they have formed the subject-matter of a separate study.

Britain's tradition of political asylum has for centuries brought refugees of many nationalities to her shores. The influence both direct and indirect, which they have exerted on British life has been a factor of no small importance. The role of religious immigration has frequently been examined, that of the socialist emigrés from Central Europe has so far received less detailed attention.

The Bolsheviks saw their revolution, not as merely Russian, but as the opening act in a great drama of international socialist revolution. This vision, dazzling in itself, mingled with Russian reality, evoked responses in the Australian and New Zealand labour movements. To these countries, the Russian revolution came as part accomplished fact, part world myth, an astonishing sublimation of the enforced and sordid internationalism of suffering on the battlefields of the world war. As such, it was peculiarly disturbing to labour movements which had been, in the main, traditionally cautious and self-sufficient, resistant to both dreams and doctrines. But even Australian and New Zealand labour could not live by bread alone. Was the Russian revolution relevant? This was the basic question, and, at first, it went to the core of local conflicts and indecisions. At first, this question seemed to mean – were revolutionary concepts relevant to Australian and New Zealand conditions, in a situation of imminent world revolution. Was labour to pursue doctrinaire, militant and revolutionary socialism, or welfare-state reformism? This fundamental alternative was, of course, not absent before the Russian revolution, but that revolution posed it with a realism, bluntness and urgency never experienced before. Yet hardly had Australian and New Zealand labour confronted with this imperative, when its terms began to change as circumstances narrowed the challenge represented by Russia. Was the Russian revolution relevant? By 1920 this question had come to mean – would Australian and New Zealand labour accept Russian methods, theories and direction?

La fondation du Parti Ouvrier Belge en 1885 ne se réduit pas à la seule histoire des efforts laborieux poursuivis depuis 1875 par les socialistes belges en vue de constituer un parti politique de la classe ouvrière. Ce point de vue engagé, adopté par les historiographes socialistes, n'a pas permis de comprendre que le Parti Ouvrier Belge fut en 1885/1886 l'organisation qui favorisa le ralliement de la classe ouvrière à l'action politique. Si l'événement de 1885 eut une telle portée, c'est en effet parce que le Parti Ouvrier Belge réalisa la fusion du mouvement socialiste, déjà constitué en parti depuis 1879, et du mouvement syndical des ouvriers de la petite industrie et des petits métiers, alors que ces derniers, abandonnant leur abstentionnisme politique traditionnel, recouraient enfin à des méthodes d'action politique.

As others before him, the late Humphrey House once remarked upon the paucity of our knowledge concerning sexual behavior in Victorian England. For House the extreme reticence of the Victorians magnified the value of every fragment of evidence pertaining to sexual behavior that scholars uncovered. To fathom the meaning of the extreme reticence itself does not seem to have been particularly relevant to the problem for House. In this paper, which is an analysis of late-Victorian Sexual Respectability, not only the fragmentary sorts of knowledge that House alluded to, but a comparatively unexplored source, medical books, have been made meaningful and interpreted within the frame of reference of the Respectable Social System prevailing in England roughly between 1859 and 1895.

Advancing under socialist banners, the labor movement in Western Europe won such success by the end of the nineteenth century as to produce a deep moral and intellectual crisis in European socialism. Internecine quarrels over revisionism, participationism, and antipolitical syndicalism reflected the malaise of a “revolutionary” movement that each year bound itself more closely to the system it had vowed to destroy. For socialist theoreticians, the crisis was cognitive or “scientific” – it had to do with issues of adequate historical analysis and prediction – but for the theorists of French revolutionary syndicalism it was essentially a moral crisis. In their eyes the socialist parties had already failed because they were the instruments for manipulation and betrayal of the workers by leaders whose ambitions could be gratified through the capitalist establishment. They identified a practical and moral alternative to political socialism in the revolutionary general strike prepared and carried out by autonomous proletarian organizations. Such organizations were necessary to the idealists of the general strike if their programs were not to degenerate into a strictly verbal revolutionary Couéism and they therefore put great stock in the development of militant working-class associations. Among these, the Bourses du Travail, which flourished from 1895 to 1901 under the dedicated direction of the anarchist intellectual, Fernand Pelloutier, seemed the most promising.

In all of the writing on Chartism, virtually no attention has been paid to the movement in northeastern England. Tucked off as they are in a remote corner of the country, Newcastle, Sunderland, and the industrial and mining communities around have been neglected by scholars who usually mean Lancashire and the West Riding of Yorkshire when they speak of “the North”. Yet Chartism in Northumberland and Durham attained a stridency and vehemence which was rarely matched and never excelled elsewhere.

In the process of establishing continence as the norm of gentlemanly sexual behaviour, continence became a Victorian gospel. The mere narration of the process under Section II in the previous issue of this journal did not in itself yield the historical meaning of the gospel of thrift in semen. To understand the process historically is to ascertain the function of continence in a comprehensive system of relationships. More specifically the gospel of continence reveals its meaning when it is related to (1) the dynamic quality inherent in the structure and functioning of the Respectable Economic System, the compulsion to accumulate and reinvest capital, (2) Respectable thought about the purpose of political economy, and (3) the degree of integration of the virtue of continence into the Respectable Social System.

Gegen Mitte des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts war das wirtschaftliche Denken so weit fortgeschritten, daß es ein theoretisches System bildete, wobei die Regeln, die beim internationalen Güteraustausch zu beachten sind, formuliert wurden, zur Verwirklichung dessen, was als die natürliche Ordnung des Außenhandels angesehen wurde. Drei Probleme oder Gruppen von Problemen waren bis dahin untersucht worden.

Edward Gibbon Wakefield was born in London in 1796. For part of his childhood his grandmother, Mrs. Priscilla Wakefield, was his guardian. She was a prominent Quaker, author of several books including A Family Tour through the British Empire (1814), an active social worker and founder of a savings bank. His father was also a philanthropist and author of An Account of Ireland, Statistical and Political (1812), but he does not appear to have been an active member of the Society of Friends.

Wenn wir von sozialen Unterschichten im Zusammenhang mit dem Prozeß der Industrialisierung sprechen, denken wir unwillkürlich an die Fabrikarbeiterschaft. Es liegt daher nahe, unser Thema als eine Frage nach der Entstehung der industriellen Lohnarbeiterschicht aufzufassen. In der Tat möchte ich mich auch im wesentlichen auf diese Frage konzentrieren; doch sei gleich eingangs bemerkt, daß, wie immer wir auch die Periode der Frühindustrialisierung zeitlich abgrenzen, das Thema „soziale Unterschichten” damit bei weitem nicht ausgeschöpft ist, ja daß wir uns den Zugang zur Beantwortung wesentlicher Fragen nach Herkunft, Zusammenset2ung, sozialer Bewertung und Lebensgefühl der Fabrikarbeiterschaft verbauen, wenn wir unseren Blick zu eng auf diese selbst richten. Deshalb müssen andere Gruppen, die sog. „unterbäuerliche Schicht”, die Handwerksgesellen, die bald agrarisch, bald gewerblich tätigen Tagelöhner, die ländliche und städtische Heimarbeiterschaft, die Dienstboten und ebenso das herren- und heimatlose Volk der Bettler und Vagabunden einbezogen werden, auch wenn wir sie hier nur als Reservoir für die gewerblich-industrielle Unterschicht behandeln können.

Dialectical idealism as applied to social theory may be provisionally defined as an attempt to explain the evolution of Western society through the use of dialectical forms which rely upon the presumed motive power of spiritual, mental, or ideal forces. These forces are presumed to “realize themselves” in the historical process. Hegel and Fichte, of course, first made such concepts familiar. The mighty influence of Marx and dialectical materialism, which kept the form but not the idealism of the Hegelian dialectic, has accounted for a lasting eclipse of interest in this earlier form of dialectical social thought. It is at least partly a symptom of this general decline of interest in dialectical idealism that the work of Lorenz von Stein has become, until quite recently, all but forgotten to modern scholarship.

In den Jahren vor dem ersten Weltkrieg wurde der SPD und ihrem wichtigsten Theoretiker, Karl Kautsky, in den sozialistischen Parteien der ost- und südosteuropäischen Länder eine besonders grosse Anerkennung gezollt. „Für uns Russen war die deutsche Sozialdemokratie die Mutter, das lebendige Beispiel. Wir idealisierten sie aus der Entfernung. Die Namen von Bebel und Kautsky sprach man andächtig aus.” So beschrieb Trotzki viele Jahre später seine Haltung gegenüber der grössten Partei in der 2. Internationale, die – allerdings in verschiedenen Graden der Abstufung der Anerkennung – fast allen russischen Marxisten gemeinsam war. Selbst Lenin, der weder (wie etwa Akselrod und Rjazanov) damals mit Kautsky befreundet gewesen ist, noch (wie Trotzki) ihn jemals als seinen „Lehrer” bezeichnet hat, schätzte die theoretischen Arbeiten Kautskys hoch ein, wie er diesem im November 1911 noch brieflich bestätigte. Eine grundlegende Änderung in Lenins Urteil über Kautsky ist erst in den letzten Vorkriegsjahren, öffentlich gar erst im Winter 1913/14 deutlich wahrzunehmen.

Nachdem bereits früher aus den Archiven des IISG. einige Briefe Rosa Luxemburgs und andere die Tätigkeit der Verfasserin in der deutschen Sozialdemokratie betreffende Dokumente veröffentlicht werden konnten, stellen die hier mitgeteilten Briefe eine kleine Nachlese an Luxemburg-Dokumenten dar. Es handelt sich um einen Brief an Minna Kautsky, drei Briefe an Luise Kautsky, ein Schreiben an Hans Kautsky und vier Briefe an Fanny Jezierska. Einer der letzteren enthält die Abschrift eines Schreibens Karl Liebknechts an Fanny Jezierska. Es wurde ferner ein Brief Leo Jogiches' hinzugefügt, weil er für Rosa Luxemburg bestimmte Mitteilungen enthält, die der damals im Berliner “Weibergefängnis” Inhaftierten überbracht wurden.

Auf eine Einführung in die unten veröffentlichten archivalischen Miszellen kann verzichtet werden: sie sprechen für sich selbst und wo immer eine Erläuterung angebracht erschien, wurde sie in einer Fussnote gegeben.

In manchen Marx-Bibliographien wird ein Brief angeführt, den Karl Marx vier Tage vor seinem Tode an einen „hervorragenden Sozialdemokraten” in Wien gerichtet und den er – als schwerkranker Mann – einem angeblichen Freund und „Privatsekretär”, Namens Thomas Sanders in die Feder diktiert haben soll. Daß es sich dabei um eine plumpe Fälschung handelt, wurde schon 1884 im II Jg. der Kautskyschen „Neuen Zeit”, in einem der Wiener „Presse-Korruption” gewidmeten Artikel festgestellt. Der Verfasser des gefälschten Marx-Briefes war der Wiener Journalist Viktor Hahn, der sich darauf spezialisierte, Briefe bekannter Persönlichkeiten (so z.B. L. Kossuths, Rich. Wagners, des Frauenmörders Hugo Schenck u.a.) zu erfinden und sie dann für gutes Honorar in diversen Tageszeitungen zu „verwerten”. – Im gegebenen Falle handelte es sich ausserdem darum, Marxens Autorität im sog. Merstallingerprozeß, der gerade damals in Wien stattfand, gegen die „Anarchisten” ins Feld zu führen. (Der fabrizierte Brief wurde auch während der Gerichtsverhandlung vom Staatsanwalte zitiert.)

Unlängst mir zugänglich gemachtes und von mir neuaufgefundenes Archivmaterial wirft zusätzliches Licht auf die Geschichte des Genfer Tageblattes „L'Espérance”.
