In this note, we give a new proof of the fact that an affine semiprime algebra $R$ of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension 1 satisfies a polynomial identity. Our proof uses only the growth properties of the algebra and yields an explicit upper bound for the pi degree of $R$.

Let G be a finite abelian group of rank m, M an oriented compact connected surface, and F(G, M) the set of all orientation preserving free G-actions on M. Two actions φ1, φ2εF(G, M) are equivalent if there exists an orientation preserving homeomorphism h of M such that

hφ1(f) for all f ε G.

This paper is a sequel to [2]. A polycyclic-by-finite group G was there called dihedral free if G contains no subgroup isomorphic to 〈b, a:ba = b-1 a2 = 1〉 whose normalizer has finite index in G. It was shown in [2, Theorem F] that, if R is a commutative Noetherian domain, the group ring RG is a prime Noetherian maximal order if and only if R is integrally closed, G is dihedral free, and G has no non-trivial finite normal subgroups. Throughout, R and G will be assumed to satisfy these hypotheses. The main aim of the paper is to study the class group of the maximal order RG.

A generalization is given of a theorem of F. Brafman [1] on the equivalence of generating relations for a certain sequence of functions. The main result, contained in Theorem 2 below, may be applied to several special functions including the classical orthogonal polynomials such as Hermite, Jacobi (and, of course, Legendre and ultraspherical), and Laguerre polynomials.

Banach spaces whose duals possess the Radon-Nikodym property have been studied extensively in the past (cf. [5]). It has been shown recently in [4] that a C*-algebra is scattered if and only if its Banach dual possesses the Radon-Nikodym property. This result extends the well-known result of Pełczynski and Semandini [8] that a compact Hausdorff space Ωis dispersed if and only if C(Ω)* has the Radon-Nikodym property. The purpose of this note is to give a transparent proof of a more general result for Jordan algebras which unifies the aforementioned results. We prove that the dual of a JB-algebra A possesses the Radon-Nikodym property if and only if the state space of A is the cr-convex hull of its pure states. We also consider the projective tensor products of the duals of JB-algebras in this context.

In this paper, we study some aspects of the local fields generated by division values of formal Drinfeld modules.

In 1960 Ericksen [1] introduced a simple theory of anisotropic fluids. This theory differs from the classical theory of fluids in that the deformation of the material is no longer solely described by the usual vector displacement field but requires in addition the specification of a further vector field di, termed the director. Moreover, corresponding to this increased kinematic flexibility new types of stress, body force and inertia are introduced. Leslie [2], adopting the conservation laws of [1], formulated constitutive equations similar to those considered by Ericksen and discussed the thermodynamical restrictions imposed by the Clausius–Duhem inequality. Here we shall consider the case in which at each point the director is constrained to remain a unit vector. Then the usual interpretation is to regard di as indicating a single preferred direction in the material (see for example [3]). It is thought that the physical applications of this theory are likely to lie in such areas as polymeric fluids and suspensions.

Let K be a totally real algebraic number field of degree n > 1, and let OK be the maximal order. We denote by гk, the Hilbert modular group SL2(OK) associated with K. On the extent of the weight of an automorphy factor for гK, some restrictions are imposed, not as in the elliptic modular case. Maass [5] showed that the weight is integral for K = ℚ(√5). It was shown by Christian [1] that for any Hilbert modular group it is a rational number with the bounded denominator depending on the group.

In this paper, we provide an explicit upper bound for the Loxton–Kedlaya rank of the maximal abelian extension of ℚ.

We shall extend results of Samuel [19] and Griffin [8, 9] about conditions which generalise the notion of valuation domain in a field. Let U be a commutative ring with identity, R a subring of U and L an R-submodule of U. The conditions we study have in common the property (EV), that the submodules L:x (x ∈ U) form a chain. We pay particular attention to the strongest of the conditions, viz, that L be a Manis valuation (MV) subring, i.e. having a prime ideal P such that (L, P) is a maximal pair in U (see [19], [16] and e.g. [4]). Such P is unique, being the union of all L:x such that x ∉ L, which we call P+(L) the centre of L. This set P+ plays a key role in the study of all our valuation conditions.

Let ℍ be the division ring of real quaternions. Let SL(2, ℍ) be the group of 2 × 2 quaternionic matrices $A={\scriptsize{(\begin{array}{l@{\quad}l} a & b \\ c & d \end{array})}}$ with quaternionic determinant det A = |ad − aca−1b| = 1. This group acts by the orientation-preserving isometries of the five-dimensional real hyperbolic space. We obtain discreteness criteria for Zariski-dense subgroups of SL(2, ℍ).

Let n be any positive integer and p be any prime. Also, let X be any spectrum and let K(n) denote the nth Morava K-theory spectrum. Then we construct a descent spectral sequence with abutment π∗(LK(n)(X)) and E2-term equal to the continuous cohomology of Gn, the extended Morava stabilizer group, with coefficients in a certain discrete Gn-module that is built from various homotopy fixed point spectra of the Morava module of X. This spectral sequence can be contrasted with the K(n)-local En-Adams spectral sequence for π∗(LK(n)(X)), whose E2-term is not known to always be equal to a continuous cohomology group.

Let G be a given group and A, B be two subgroups of G which may or may not coincide. A homomorphism μ which maps A onto B is called a partial endomorphism of G. When A coincides with G then we call μ a total endomorphism or as it is usually called an endomorphism of G. If μ* is a partial (or total) endomorphism of a supergroup G* ⊇ G, then we say that μ* extends, or continues, μ when μ* is defined for at least all the elements a ∈ A and moreover aμ = aμ* for all a ∈ A If the partial endomorphism μ is an isomorphic mapping then we speak of a partial automorphism of G.

We present the concept of cotorsion pairs cut along subcategories of an abelian category. This provides a generalization of complete cotorsion pairs, and represents a general framework to find approximations restricted to certain subcategories. We also exhibit some connections between cut cotorsion pairs and Auslander–Buchweitz approximation theory, by considering relative analogs for Frobenius pairs and Auslander–Buchweitz contexts. Several applications are given in the settings of relative Gorenstein homological algebra, chain complexes, and quasi-coherent sheaves, as well as to characterize some important results on the Finitistic Dimension Conjecture, the existence of right adjoints of quotient functors by Serre subcategories, and the description of cotorsion pairs in triangulated categories as co-t-structures.

The notion of mutation pairs of subcategories in an n-abelian category is defined in this paper. Let ${\cal D} \subseteq {\cal Z}$ be subcategories of an n-abelian category ${\cal A}$. Then the quotient category ${\cal Z}/{\cal D}$ carries naturally an (n + 2) -angulated structure whenever $ ({\cal Z},{\cal Z}) $ forms a ${\cal D} \subseteq {\cal Z}$-mutation pair and ${\cal Z}$ is extension-closed. Moreover, we introduce strongly functorially finite subcategories of n-abelian categories and show that the corresponding quotient categories are one-sided (n + 2)-angulated categories. Finally, we study homological finiteness of subcategories in a mutation pair.

In this paper, we provide two new extensions to a lemma of Bernik (1983). Applications are also discussed.

In this paper we introduce simple multipliers, a special subclass of multipliers on a Banach module. We show that, from a local spectral point of view, these multipliers behave like multipliers on a commutative Banach algebra. Our definition of simple multipliers relies on the notion of point multipliers. These multipliers were studied earlier. However our approach gives new insight into this topic and therefore could be of some interest by itself.

Normal-convex embeddings are introduced for inverse semigroups, generalizing the group-theoretic concept, due to Papakyriakopoulos [4]. It is shown that every E-unitary inverse semigroup admits a normal-convex embedding into a semidirect product of a semilattice by a group, a stronger version of a result by O'Carroll [3]. A general embedding result for inverse semigroups is also obtained.
