We construct an Euler system—a compatible family of global cohomology classes—for the Galois representations appearing in the geometry of Hilbert modular surfaces. If a conjecture of Bloch and Kato on injectivity of regulator maps holds, this Euler system is nontrivial, and we deduce bounds towards the Iwasawa main conjecture for these Galois representations.

For two metric spaces $\mathbb X$ and $\mathcal Y$ the chromatic number $\chi ({{\mathbb X}};{{\mathcal{Y}}})$ of $\mathbb X$ with forbidden $\mathcal Y$ is the smallest k such that there is a colouring of the points of $\mathbb X$ with k colors that contains no monochromatic copy of $\mathcal Y$. In this article, we show that for each finite metric space $\mathcal {M}$ that contains at least two points the value $\chi \left ({{\mathbb R}}^n_\infty; \mathcal M \right )$ grows exponentially with n. We also provide explicit lower and upper bounds for some special $\mathcal M$.

We generalize Brooks’ theorem to show that if $G$ is a Borel graph on a standard Borel space $X$ of degree bounded by $d\geqslant 3$ which contains no $(d+1)$ -cliques, then $G$ admits a ${\it\mu}$ -measurable $d$ -coloring with respect to any Borel probability measure ${\it\mu}$ on $X$ , and a Baire measurable $d$ -coloring with respect to any compatible Polish topology on $X$ . The proof of this theorem uses a new technique for constructing one-ended spanning subforests of Borel graphs, as well as ideas from the study of list colorings. We apply the theorem to graphs arising from group actions to obtain factor of IID $d$ -colorings of Cayley graphs of degree $d$ , except in two exceptional cases.

Let $Y$ be a principal homogeneous space of an abelian surface, or a K3 surface, over a finitely generated extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. In 2008, Skorobogatov and Zarhin showed that the Brauer group modulo algebraic classes $\text{Br}\,Y/\text{Br}_{1}\,Y$ is finite. We study this quotient for the family of surfaces that are geometrically isomorphic to a product of isogenous non-CM elliptic curves, as well as the related family of geometrically Kummer surfaces; both families can be characterized by their geometric Néron–Severi lattices. Over a field of characteristic $0$, we prove that the existence of a strong uniform bound on the size of the odd torsion of $\text{Br}Y/\text{Br}_{1}Y$ is equivalent to the existence of a strong uniform bound on integers $n$ for which there exist non-CM elliptic curves with abelian $n$-division fields. Using the same methods we show that, for a fixed prime $\ell$, a number field $k$ of fixed degree $r$, and a fixed discriminant of the geometric Néron–Severi lattice, $\#(\text{Br}Y/\text{Br}_{1}Y)[\ell ^{\infty }]$ is bounded by a constant that depends only on $\ell$, $r$, and the discriminant.

We identify the perverse filtration of a Lagrangian fibration with the monodromy weight filtration of a maximally unipotent degeneration of compact hyper-Kähler manifolds.

We construct a family of fibred threefolds $X_m \to (S , \Delta )$ such that $X_m$ has no étale cover that dominates a variety of general type but it dominates the orbifold $(S,\Delta )$ of general type. Following Campana, the threefolds $X_m$ are called weakly special but not special. The Weak Specialness Conjecture predicts that a weakly special variety defined over a number field has a potentially dense set of rational points. We prove that if m is big enough, the threefolds $X_m$ present behaviours that contradict the function field and analytic analogue of the Weak Specialness Conjecture. We prove our results by adapting the recent method of Ru and Vojta. We also formulate some generalisations of known conjectures on exceptional loci that fit into Campana’s program and prove some cases over function fields.

We study sparse approximation by greedy algorithms. We prove the Lebesgue-type inequalities for the weak Chebyshev greedy algorithm (WCGA), a generalization of the weak orthogonal matching pursuit to the case of a Banach space. The main novelty of these results is a Banach space setting instead of a Hilbert space setting. The results are proved for redundant dictionaries satisfying certain conditions. Then we apply these general results to the case of bases. In particular, we prove that the WCGA provides almost optimal sparse approximation for the trigonometric system in $L_p$, $2\le p<\infty $.

We define a notion of height for rational points with respect to a vector bundle on a proper algebraic stack with finite diagonal over a global field, which generalizes the usual notion for rational points on projective varieties. We explain how to compute this height for various stacks of interest (for instance: classifying stacks of finite groups, symmetric products of varieties, moduli stacks of abelian varieties, weighted projective spaces). In many cases, our uniform definition reproduces ways already in use for measuring the complexity of rational points, while in others it is something new. Finally, we formulate a conjecture about the number of rational points of bounded height (in our sense) on a stack $\mathcal {X}$ , which specializes to the Batyrev–Manin conjecture when $\mathcal {X}$ is a scheme and to Malle’s conjecture when $\mathcal {X}$ is the classifying stack of a finite group.

We systematically produce algebraic varieties with torus action by constructing them as suitably embedded subvarieties of toric varieties. The resulting varieties admit an explicit treatment in terms of toric geometry and graded ring theory. Our approach extends existing constructions of rational varieties with torus action of complexity one and delivers all Mori dream spaces with torus action. We exhibit the example class of ‘general arrangement varieties’ and obtain classification results in the case of complexity two and Picard number at most two, extending former work in complexity one.

We consider a broad class of systems of nonlinear integro-differential equations posed on the real line that arise as Euler–Lagrange equations to energies involving nonlinear nonlocal interactions. Although these equations are not readily cast as dynamical systems, we develop a calculus that yields a natural Hamiltonian formalism. In particular, we formulate Noether’s theorem in this context, identify a degenerate symplectic structure, and derive Hamiltonian differential equations on finite-dimensional center manifolds when those exist. Our formalism yields new natural conserved quantities. For Euler–Lagrange equations arising as traveling-wave equations in gradient flows, we identify Lyapunov functions. We provide several applications to pattern-forming systems including neural field and phase separation problems.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the properties of spectral and tiling subsets of cyclic groups, with an eye towards the spectral set conjecture [9] in one dimension, which states that a bounded measurable subset of $\mathbb {R}$ accepts an orthogonal basis of exponentials if and only if it tiles $\mathbb {R}$ by translations. This conjecture is strongly connected to its discrete counterpart, namely that, in every finite cyclic group, a subset is spectral if and only if it is a tile. The tools presented herein are refinements of recent ones used in the setting of cyclic groups; the structure of vanishing sums of roots of unity [20] is a prevalent notion throughout the text, as well as the structure of tiling subsets of integers [1]. We manage to prove the conjecture for cyclic groups of order $p^{m}q^{n}$ , when one of the exponents is $\leq 6$ or when $p^{m-2}<q^{4}$ , and also prove that a tiling subset of a cyclic group of order $p_{1}^{m}p_{2}\dotsm p_{n}$ is spectral.

We establish new Strichartz estimates for orthonormal families of initial data in the case of the wave, Klein–Gordon and fractional Schrödinger equations. Our estimates extend those of Frank–Sabin in the case of the wave and Klein–Gordon equations, and generalize work of Frank et al. and Frank–Sabin for the Schrödinger equation. Due to a certain technical barrier, except for the classical Schrödinger equation, the Strichartz estimates for orthonormal families of initial data have not previously been established up to the sharp summability exponents in the full range of admissible pairs. We obtain the optimal estimates in various notable cases and improve the previous results.

The main novelty of this paper is our derivation and use of estimates for weighted oscillatory integrals, which we combine with an approach due to Frank and Sabin. Our weighted oscillatory integral estimates are, in a certain sense, rather delicate endpoint versions of known dispersive estimates with power-type weights of the form $|\xi |^{-\lambda }$ or $(1 + |\xi |^2)^{-\lambda /2}$, where $\lambda \in \mathbb {R}$. We achieve optimal decay rates by considering such weights with appropriate $\lambda \in \mathbb {C}$. For the wave and Klein–Gordon equations, our weighted oscillatory integral estimates are new. For the fractional Schrödinger equation, our results overlap with prior work of Kenig–Ponce–Vega in a certain regime. Our contribution to the theory of weighted oscillatory integrals has also been influenced by earlier work of Carbery–Ziesler, Cowling et al., and Sogge–Stein.

Finally, we provide some applications of our new Strichartz estimates for orthonormal families of data to the theory of infinite systems of Hartree type, weighted velocity averaging lemmas for kinetic transport equations, and refined Strichartz estimates for data in Besov spaces.

We show that there is nonuniqueness for the Calderón problem with partial data for Riemannian metrics with Hölder continuous coefficients in dimension greater than or equal to three. We provide simple counterexamples in the case of cylindrical Riemannian manifolds with boundary having two ends. The coefficients of these metrics are smooth in the interior of the manifold and are only Hölder continuous of order $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}<1$ at the end where the measurements are made. More precisely, we construct a toroidal ring $(M,g)$ and we show that there exist in the conformal class of $g$ an infinite number of Riemannian metrics $\tilde{g}=c^{4}g$ such that their corresponding partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps at one end coincide. The corresponding smooth conformal factors are harmonic with respect to the metric $g$ and do not satisfy the unique continuation principle.

We prove a general local law for Wigner matrices that optimally handles observables of arbitrary rank and thus unifies the well-known averaged and isotropic local laws. As an application, we prove a central limit theorem in quantum unique ergodicity (QUE): that is, we show that the quadratic forms of a general deterministic matrix A on the bulk eigenvectors of a Wigner matrix have approximately Gaussian fluctuation. For the bulk spectrum, we thus generalise our previous result [17] as valid for test matrices A of large rank as well as the result of Benigni and Lopatto [7] as valid for specific small-rank observables.

We prove that any cyclic quadrilateral can be inscribed in any closed convex $C^{1}$-curve. The smoothness condition is not required if the quadrilateral is a rectangle.

For a split reductive group $G$ over a finite field, we show that the intersection (cohomology) motive of the moduli stack of iterated $G$-shtukas with bounded modification and level structure is defined independently of the standard conjectures on motivic $t$-structures on triangulated categories of motives. This is in accordance with general expectations on the independence of $\ell$ in the Langlands correspondence for function fields.

We propose an intersection-theoretic method to reduce questions in genus 0 logarithmic Gromov–Witten theory to questions in the Gromov–Witten theory of smooth pairs, in the presence of positivity. The method is applied to the enumerative geometry of rational curves with maximal contact orders along a simple normal crossings divisor and to recent questions about its relationship to local curve counting. Three results are established. We produce counterexamples to the local-logarithmic conjectures of van Garrel–Graber–Ruddat and Tseng–You. We prove that a weak form of the conjecture holds for product geometries. Finally, we explicitly determine the difference between local and logarithmic theories, in terms of relative invariants for which efficient algorithms are known. The polyhedral geometry of the tropical moduli of maps plays an essential and intricate role in the analysis.

We establish the Bernstein-centre type of results for the category of mod p representations of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_2 (\mathbb {Q}_p)$ . We treat all the remaining open cases, which occur when p is $2$ or $3$ . Our arguments carry over for all primes p. This allows us to remove the restrictions on the residual representation at p in Lue Pan’s recent proof of the Fontaine–Mazur conjecture for Hodge–Tate representations of $\operatorname {\mathrm {Gal}}(\overline {\mathbb Q}/\mathbb {Q})$ with equal Hodge–Tate weights.

The hyperbolic quadratic eigenvalue problem (HQEP) was shown to admit Courant–Fischer type min–max principles in 1955 by Duffin and Cauchy type interlacing inequalities in 2010 by Veselić. It can be regarded as the closest analog (among all kinds of quadratic eigenvalue problem) to the standard Hermitian eigenvalue problem (among all kinds of standard eigenvalue problem). In this paper, we conduct a systematic study on the HQEP both theoretically and numerically. On the theoretical front, we generalize Wielandt–Lidskii type min–max principles and, as a special case, Fan type trace min/max principles and establish Weyl type and Wielandt–Lidskii–Mirsky type perturbation results when an HQEP is perturbed to another HQEP. On the numerical front, we justify the natural generalization of the Rayleigh–Ritz procedure with existing principles and our new optimization principles, and, as consequences of these principles, we extend various current optimization approaches—steepest descent/ascent and nonlinear conjugate gradient type methods for the Hermitian eigenvalue problem—to calculate a few extreme eigenvalues (of both positive and negative type). A detailed convergence analysis is given for the steepest descent/ascent methods. The analysis reveals the intrinsic quantities that control convergence rates and consequently yields ways of constructing effective preconditioners. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the proposed theory and algorithms.

The main result of the present article is a Rademacher-type theorem for intrinsic Lipschitz graphs of codimension $k\leq n$ in sub-Riemannian Heisenberg groups ${\mathbb H}^{n}$ . For the purpose of proving such a result, we settle several related questions pertaining both to the theory of intrinsic Lipschitz graphs and to the one of currents. First, we prove an extension result for intrinsic Lipschitz graphs as well as a uniform approximation theorem by means of smooth graphs: both of these results stem from a new definition (equivalent to the one introduced by B. Franchi, R. Serapioni and F. Serra Cassano) of intrinsic Lipschitz graphs and are valid for a more general class of intrinsic Lipschitz graphs in Carnot groups. Second, our proof of Rademacher’s theorem heavily uses the language of currents in Heisenberg groups: one key result is, for us, a version of the celebrated constancy theorem. Inasmuch as Heisenberg currents are defined in terms of Rumin’s complex of differential forms, we also provide a convenient basis of Rumin’s spaces. Eventually, we provide some applications of Rademacher’s theorem including a Lusin-type result for intrinsic Lipschitz graphs, the equivalence between ${\mathbb H}$ -rectifiability and ‘Lipschitz’ ${\mathbb H}$ -rectifiability and an area formula for intrinsic Lipschitz graphs in Heisenberg groups.
