We show that the additive higher Chow groups of regular schemes over a field induce a Zariski sheaf of pro-differential graded algebras, the Milnor range of which is isomorphic to the Zariski sheaf of big de Rham–Witt complexes. This provides an explicit cycle-theoretic description of the big de Rham–Witt sheaves. Several applications are derived.

We define and study jet bundles in the geometric orbifold category. We show that the usual arguments from the compact and the logarithmic settings do not all extend to this more general framework. This is illustrated by simple examples of orbifold pairs of general type that do not admit any global jet differential, even if some of these examples satisfy the Green–Griffiths–Lang conjecture. This contrasts with an important result of Demailly (Holomorphic Morse inequalities and the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture, Pure Appl. Math. Q. 7 (2011), 1165–1207) proving that compact varieties of general type always admit jet differentials. We illustrate the usefulness of the study of orbifold jets by establishing the hyperbolicity of some orbifold surfaces, that cannot be derived from the current techniques in Nevanlinna theory. We also conjecture that Demailly's theorem should hold for orbifold pairs with smooth boundary divisors under a certain natural multiplicity condition, and provide some evidence towards it.

The group of ${\mathcal{C}}^{1}$ -diffeomorphisms of any sparse Cantor subset of a manifold is countable and discrete (possibly trivial). Thompson’s groups come out of this construction when we consider central ternary Cantor subsets of an interval. Brin’s higher-dimensional generalizations $nV$ of Thompson’s group $V$ arise when we consider products of central ternary Cantor sets. We derive that the ${\mathcal{C}}^{2}$ -smooth mapping class group of a sparse Cantor sphere pair is a discrete countable group and produce this way versions of the braided Thompson groups.

Let E be a CM number field and let S be a finite set of primes of E containing the primes dividing a given prime number l and another prime u split above the maximal totally real subfield of E. If ES denotes a maximal algebraic extension of E which is unramified outside S, we show that the natural maps are injective. We discuss generalizations of this result.

An argument is given to fill a gap in a proof in the author’s article On certain algebraic curves related to polynomial maps, Compositio Math. 103 (1996), 319–350, that the polynomial Φn(x,c), whose roots are the periodic points of period n of a certain polynomial map x→f(x,c), is absolutely irreducible over the finite field of p elements, provided that f(x,1) has distinct roots and that the multipliers of the orbits of period n are also distinct over . Assuming that Φn(x,c) is reducible in characteristic p, we show that Hensel’s lemma and Laurent series expansions of the roots can be used to obtain a factorization of Φn(x,c) in characteristic 0, contradicting the absolute irreducibility of this polynomial over the rational field.

We study the cohomology of Jacobians and Hilbert schemes of points on reduced and locally planar curves, which are however allowed to be singular and reducible. We show that the cohomologies of all Hilbert schemes of all subcurves are encoded in the cohomologies of the fine compactified Jacobians of connected subcurves, via the perverse Leray filtration. We also prove, along the way, a result of independent interest, giving sufficient conditions for smoothness of the total space of the relative compactified Jacobian of a family of locally planar curves.

In this article we give a geometric construction of a tilting perverse sheaf on Drinfeld’s compactification, by applying the nearby cycles functor to a family of nondegenerate Whittaker sheaves. Its restrictions along the defect stratification are shown to be certain perverse sheaves attached to the nilpotent radical of the Langlands dual Lie algebra. We also describe the subquotients of the monodromy filtration using the Picard–Lefschetz oscillators introduced by Schieder. We give an argument that the subquotients are semisimple based on the action, constructed by Feigin, Finkelberg, Kuznetsov, and Mirković, of the Langlands dual Lie algebra on the global intersection cohomology of quasimaps into flag varieties.

We study horizontal semistable and horizontal de Rham representations of the absolute Galois group of a certain smooth affinoid over a $p$-adic field. In particular, we prove that a horizontal de Rham representation becomes horizontal semistable after a finite extension of the base field. As an application, we show that every de Rham local system on a smooth rigid analytic variety becomes horizontal semistable étale locally around every classical point. We also discuss potentially crystalline loci of de Rham local systems and cohomologically potentially good reduction loci of smooth proper morphisms.

Sen attached to each $p$-adic Galois representation of a $p$-adic field a multiset of numbers called generalized Hodge–Tate weights. In this paper, we discuss a rigidity of these numbers in a geometric family. More precisely, we consider a $p$-adic local system on a rigid analytic variety over a $p$-adic field and show that the multiset of generalized Hodge–Tate weights of the local system is constant. The proof uses the $p$-adic Riemann–Hilbert correspondence by Liu and Zhu, a Sen–Fontaine decompletion theory in the relative setting, and the theory of formal connections. We also discuss basic properties of Hodge–Tate sheaves on a rigid analytic variety.

Let $U$ be an affine smooth curve defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. The Abhyankar conjecture (proved by Raynaud and Harbater in 1994) describes the set of finite quotients of Grothendieck’s étale fundamental group $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{1}^{\acute{\text{e}}\text{t}}(U)$. In this paper, we consider a purely inseparable analogue of this problem, formulated in terms of Nori’s profinite fundamental group scheme $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{N}(U)$, and give a partial answer to it.

Let $A\rightarrow B$ be a morphism of Artin local rings with the same embedding dimension. We prove that any $A$ -flat $B$ -module is $B$ -flat. This freeness criterion was conjectured by de Smit in 1997 and improves Diamond’s criterion [The Taylor–Wiles construction and multiplicity one, Invent. Math. 128 (1997), 379–391, Theorem 2.1]. We also prove that if there is a nonzero $A$ -flat $B$ -module, then $A\rightarrow B$ is flat and is a relative complete intersection. Then we explain how this result allows one to simplify Wiles’s proof of Fermat’s last theorem: we do not need the so-called ‘Taylor–Wiles systems’ any more.

We prove that, for any small $\varepsilon > 0$, the number of irrationals among the following odd zeta values: $\zeta (3),\zeta (5),\zeta (7),\ldots ,\zeta (s)$ is at least $( c_0 - \varepsilon )({s^{1/2}}/{(\log s)^{1/2}})$, provided $s$ is a sufficiently large odd integer with respect to $\varepsilon$. The constant $c_0 = 1.192507\ldots$ can be expressed in closed form. Our work improves the lower bound $2^{(1-\varepsilon )({\log s}/{\log \log s})}$ of the previous work of Fischler, Sprang and Zudilin. We follow the same strategy of Fischler, Sprang and Zudilin. The main new ingredient is an asymptotically optimal design for the zeros of the auxiliary rational functions, which relates to the inverse totient problem.

We show that the automorphism group of Drinfeld’s half-space over a finite field is the projective linear group of the underlying vector space. The proof of this result uses analytic geometry in the sense of Berkovich over the finite field equipped with the trivial valuation. We also take into account extensions of the base field.

In the recent paper by Pakovich and Muzychuk [Solution of the polynomial moment problem, Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 99 (2009), 633–657] it was shown that any solution of ‘the polynomial moment problem’, which asks to describe polynomials $Q$ orthogonal to all powers of a given polynomial $P$ on a segment, may be obtained as a sum of so-called ‘reducible’ solutions related to different decompositions of $P$ into a composition of two polynomials of lower degrees. However, the methods of that paper do not permit us to estimate the number of necessary reducible solutions or to describe them explicitly. In this paper we provide a description of polynomial solutions of the functional equation $P_1\circ W_1=P_2\circ W_2=\cdots =P_r\circ W_r,$and on this base describe solutions of the polynomial moment problem in an explicit form suitable for applications.

This article determines the asymptotic behavior of a class of two variable ‘simultaneous’ lattice point problems in ${\bb R}^n$ for any $n \geqslant 2$. An earlier article [Li-3] has studied a similar problem for a large class of such problems in ${\bb R}^2$.

In this paper we define a kind of generalized spherical functions on Sp(2, $\Bbb R$). We call it ‘Fourier–Jacobi type’, since it can be considered as a generalized Whittaker model associated with the Jacobi maximal parabolic subgroup. Also we give the multiplicity theorem and an explicit formula of these functions for discrete series representations of Sp(2, $\Bbb R$).

We study the Balmer spectrum of the category of finite $G$-spectra for a compact Lie group $G$, extending the work for finite $G$ by Strickland, Balmer–Sanders, Barthel–Hausmann–Naumann–Nikolaus–Noel–Stapleton and others. We give a description of the underlying set of the spectrum and show that the Balmer topology is completely determined by the inclusions between the prime ideals and the topology on the space of closed subgroups of $G$. Using this, we obtain a complete description of this topology for all abelian compact Lie groups and consequently a complete classification of thick tensor ideals. For general compact Lie groups we obtain such a classification away from a finite set of primes $p$.

We extend field patching to the setting of Berkovich analytic geometry and use it to prove a local–global principle over function fields of analytic curves with respect to completions. In the context of quadratic forms, we combine it with sufficient conditions for local isotropy over a Berkovich curve to obtain applications on the $u$-invariant. The patching method we adapt was introduced by Harbater and Hartmann [Patching over fields, Israel J. Math. 176 (2010), 61–107] and further developed by these two authors and Krashen [Applications of patching to quadratic forms and central simple algebras, Invent. Math. 178 (2009), 231–263]. The results presented in this paper generalize those of Harbater, Hartmann, and Krashen [Applications of patching to quadratic forms and central simple algebras, Invent. Math. 178 (2009), 231–263] on the local–global principle and quadratic forms.

We give bounds for the Betti numbers of projective algebraic varieties in terms of their classes (degrees of dual varieties of successive hyperplane sections). We also give bounds for classes in terms of ramification volumes (mixed ramification degrees), sectional genus and, eventually, in terms of dimension, codimension and degree. For varieties whose degree is large with respect to codimension, we give sharp bounds for the above invariants and classify the varieties on the boundary, thus obtaining a generalization of Castelnuovo’s theory for curves to varieties of higher dimension.

We prove that if q is a power of an odd prime, then there is no genus-2 curve over $\mathbf{F}_q$ whose Jacobian has characteristic polynomial of Frobenius equal to $x^4 + (2 - 2q)x^2 + q^2$. Our proof uses the Brauer relations in a biquadratic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ to show that every principally polarized abelian surface over $\mathbf{F}_q$ with the given characteristic polynomial splits over $\mathbf{F}_{q^2}$ as a product of polarized elliptic curves.
