We construct bases for the stable branching algebras for the symmetric pairs $(\mathrm{GL}_{2n},\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}),\ (\mathrm{Sp}_{2(n+m)}, \mathrm{Sp}_{2n}\times\mathrm{Sp}_{2m})$ and $(\mathrm{O}_{2n},\mathrm{GL}_{n})$. Each basis element is expressed as a sum of products of pfaffians.

We compute the center of the ring of PD differential operators on a smooth variety over ℤ/pnℤ, confirming a conjecture of Kaledin (private communication). More generally, given an associative algebra A0 over ℤp and its flat deformation An over ℤ/pn+1ℤ, we prove that under a certain non-degeneracy condition, the center of An is isomorphic to the ring of length-(n+1) Witt vectors over the center of A0.

We study the Lie algebra of derivations of the coordinate ring of affine toric varieties defined by simplicial affine semigroups and prove the following results:

Such toric varieties are uniquely determined by their Lie algebra if they are supposed to be Cohen–Macaulay of dimension [ges ] 2 or Gorenstein of dimension =1.

In the Cohen–Macaulay case, every automorphism of the Lie algebra is induced from a unique automorphism of the variety.

Every derivation of the Lie algebra is inner.

Let $X$ be an irreducible complex-analytic variety, ${\mathcal{S}}$ a stratification of $X$ and ${\mathcal{F}}$ a holomorphic vector bundle on the open stratum ${X\unicode[STIX]{x0030A}}$. We give geometric conditions on ${\mathcal{S}}$ and ${\mathcal{F}}$ that produce a natural lift of the Chern class $\operatorname{c}_{k}({\mathcal{F}})\in H^{2k}({X\unicode[STIX]{x0030A}};\mathbb{C})$ to $H^{2k}(X;\mathbb{C})$, which, in the algebraic setting, is of Hodge level ${\geqslant}k$. When applied to the Baily–Borel compactification $X$ of a locally symmetric variety ${X\unicode[STIX]{x0030A}}$ and an automorphic vector bundle ${\mathcal{F}}$ on ${X\unicode[STIX]{x0030A}}$, this refines a theorem of Goresky–Pardon. In passing we define a class of simplicial resolutions of the Baily–Borel compactification that can be used to define its mixed Hodge structure. We use this to show that the stable cohomology of the Satake ($=$ Baily–Borel) compactification of ${\mathcal{A}}_{g}$ contains nontrivial Tate extensions.

In this article we construct symmetric operations for all primes (previously known only for $p=2$). These unstable operations are more subtle than the Landweber–Novikov operations, and encode all $p$-primary divisibilities of characteristic numbers. Thus, taken together (for all primes) they plug the gap left by the Hurewitz map $\mathbb{L}{\hookrightarrow}\mathbb{Z}[b_{1},b_{2},\ldots ]$, providing an important structure on algebraic cobordism. Applications include questions of rationality of Chow group elements, and the structure of the algebraic cobordism. We also construct Steenrod operations of tom Dieck style in algebraic cobordism. These unstable multiplicative operations are more canonical and subtle than Quillen-style operations, and complement the latter.

The primary aim of this paper is to (provide tools to) compute Galois groups of classical irregular q-difference equations. We are particularly interested in quantizations of certain differential equations that arise frequently in the mathematical and physical literature, namely confluent generalized q-hypergeometric equations and q-Kloosterman equations.

We prove a lower bound for the number of singular fibres of a non-isotrivial semi-stable family of curves over the projective line, in positive characteristic. The result is the same obtained previously by Beauville in characteristic zero, namely that the number is at least 4. Furthermore some consequences are discussed in the case that the number is exactly 4.

We prove that, for an inner form of GLn, the number of classes of cuspidal automorphic representations with fixed central character and fixed factor at almost every place is finite. We also prove, in the local situation, relations between the level and the ε-factor of an irreducible smooth representation.

We derive some combinatorial consequences from the positivity of Donaldson–Thomas invariants for symmetric quivers conjectured by Kontsevich and Soibelman and proved recently by Efimov. These results are used to prove the Kac conjecture for quivers having at least one loop at every vertex.

We study the growth of $\unicode[STIX]{x0428}$ and $p^{\infty }$-Selmer groups for isogenous abelian varieties in towers of number fields, with an emphasis on elliptic curves. The growth types are usually exponential, as in the ‘positive ${\it\mu}$-invariant’ setting in the Iwasawa theory of elliptic curves. The towers we consider are $p$-adic and $l$-adic Lie extensions for $l\neq p$, in particular cyclotomic and other $\mathbb{Z}_{l}$-extensions.

We establish sufficient conditions for a biextension algebra of a piecewise hereditary algebra of type Ā$_n$ or D$_n$ by indecomposable modules of derived regular length 2 to be of tame representation type.

Structures where we have both a contravariant (pullback) and a covariant (pushforward) functoriality that satisfy base change can be encoded by functors out of ($\infty$-)categories of spans (or correspondences). In this paper, we study the more complicated setup where we have two pushforwards (an ‘additive’ and a ‘multiplicative’ one), satisfying a distributivity relation. Such structures can be described in terms of bispans (or polynomial diagrams). We show that there exist $(\infty,2)$-categories of bispans, characterized by a universal property: they corepresent functors out of $\infty$-categories of spans where the pullbacks have left adjoints and certain canonical 2-morphisms (encoding base change and distributivity) are invertible. This gives a universal way to obtain functors from bispans, which amounts to upgrading ‘monoid-like’ structures to ‘ring-like’ ones. For example, symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories can be described as product-preserving functors from spans of finite sets, and if the tensor product is compatible with finite coproducts our universal property gives the canonical semiring structure using the coproduct and tensor product. More interestingly, we encode the additive and multiplicative transfers on equivariant spectra as a functor from bispans in finite $G$-sets, extend the norms for finite étale maps in motivic spectra to a functor from certain bispans in schemes, and make $\mathrm {Perf}(X)$ for $X$ a spectral Deligne–Mumford stack a functor of bispans using a multiplicative pushforward for finite étale maps in addition to the usual pullback and pushforward maps. Combining this with the polynomial functoriality of $K$-theory constructed by Barwick, Glasman, Mathew, and Nikolaus, we obtain norms on algebraic $K$-theory spectra.

Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}(\cdot )$ be the classical Ramanujan $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}$-function and let $k$ be a positive integer such that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}(n)\neq 0$ for $1\leqslant n\leqslant k/2$. (This is known to be true for $k<10^{23}$, and, conjecturally, for all $k$.) Further, let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$ be a permutation of the set $\{1,\ldots ,k\}$. We show that there exist infinitely many positive integers $m$ such that $|\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}(m+\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}(1))|<|\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}(m+\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}(2))|<\cdots <|\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}(m+\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}(k))|$. We also obtain a similar result for Hecke eigenvalues of primitive forms of square-free level.

We consider the question of when a rational homology $3$-sphere is rational homology cobordant to a connected sum of lens spaces. We prove that every rational homology cobordism class in the subgroup generated by lens spaces is represented by a unique connected sum of lens spaces whose first homology group injects in the first homology group of any other element in the same class. As a first consequence, we show that several natural maps to the rational homology cobordism group have infinite-rank cokernels. Further consequences include a divisibility condition between the determinants of a connected sum of $2$-bridge knots and any other knot in the same concordance class. Lastly, we use knot Floer homology combined with our main result to obstruct Dehn surgeries on knots from being rationally cobordant to lens spaces.

For a site ${\mathcal S}$ (with enough points), we construct a topological space X$_($)$ and a full embedding φ$^*$ of the category of sheaves on ${\mathcal S}$ into those on X$_($) (i.e., a morphism of toposes φ:Sh (X$_($) →Sh(${\mathcal S}$)). The embedding will be shown to induce a full embedding of derived categories, hence isomorphisms coh$^*$(${\mathcal S}$,A) =coh$^**$(X$_($), φ$^*$A) for any Abelian sheaf A on ${\mathcal S}$. As a particular case, this will give for any scheme Y a topological space X and a functorial isomorphism between the étale cohomology H$^**$(et{Y},A) and the ordinary sheaf cohomology H$^**$(X,φ$^**$A), for any sheaf A for the étale topology on Y.

Harm Derksen made a conjecture concerning degree bounds for the syzygies of rings of polynomial invariants in the non-modular case [Degree bounds for syzygies of invariants, Adv. Math. 185 (2004), 207–214]. We provide counterexamples to this conjecture, but also prove a slightly weakened version. We also prove some general results that give degree bounds on the homology of complexes and of $\text{Tor}\,$ groups.

Applying the main results of the author's previous work (J. Wildeshaus, The boundary motive: definition and basic properties, Compositio Math. 142 (2006), 631–656), we identify the motives occurring as cones in the co-localization and localization filtrations of the boundary motive of a Shimura variety.

We describe a general setting for the definition of semi-infinite cohomology of finite-dimensional graded algebras, and provide an interpretation of such cohomology in terms of derived categories. We apply this interpretation to compute semi-infinite cohomology of some modules over the small quantum group at a root of unity, generalizing an earlier result of Arkhipov (posed as a conjecture by B. Feigin).

We compute the spherical functions on the symmetric space Sp2n/Spn×Spn and derive a Plancherel formula for functions on the symmetric space. As an application of the Plancherel formula, we prove an identity which amounts to the fundamental lemma of a relative trace identity between Sp2n and .

We introduce an elliptic version of the Grothendieck–Springer sheaf and establish elliptic analogues of the basic results of Springer theory. From a geometric perspective, our constructions specialize geometric Eisenstein series to the resolution of degree-zero, semistable $G$-bundles by degree-zero $B$-bundles over an elliptic curve $E$. From a representation theory perspective, they produce a full embedding of representations of the elliptic or double affine Weyl group into perverse sheaves with nilpotent characteristic variety on the moduli of $G$-bundles over $E$. The resulting objects are principal series examples of elliptic character sheaves, objects expected to play the role of character sheaves for loop groups.
