By using the Grothendieck–Riemann–Roch theorem we derive cycle relations modulo algebraic equivalence in the Jacobian of a curve. The relations generalize the relations found by Colombo and van Geemen and are analogous to but simpler than the relations recently found by Herbaut. In an appendix by Zagier, it is shown that these sets of relations are equivalent.

We prove the explicit version of the Buzzard–Diamond–Jarvis conjecture formulated by Dembele et al. (Serre weights and wild ramification in two-dimensional Galois representations, Preprint (2016), arXiv:1603.07708 [math.NT]). More precisely, we prove that it is equivalent to the original Buzzard–Diamond–Jarvis conjecture, which was proved for odd primes (under a mild Taylor–Wiles hypothesis) in earlier work of the third author and coauthors.

For $n=2$ the statement in the title is a theorem of B. Poonen (2009). He uses a one-parameter family of varieties together with a theorem of Coray, Sansuc and one of the authors (1980), on the Brauer–Manin obstruction for rational points on these varieties. For $n=p$, $p$ any prime number, A. Várilly-Alvarado and B. Viray (2012) considered analogous families of varieties. Replacing this family by its $(2p+1)$th symmetric power, we prove the statement in the title using a theorem on the Brauer–Manin obstruction for rational points on such symmetric powers. The latter theorem is based on work of one of the authors with Swinnerton-Dyer (1994) and with Skorobogatov and Swinnerton-Dyer (1998), work generalising results of Salberger (1988).

For $x\in (a_{j-1}, a_j)\ (j=1,\ldots, p+1;\ a_0\!:=-\infty, \ a_{p+1} \!:=\infty)$ the mapping $T_j\!: w=x-\sum ^p_{l=1}\lambda _l/(x-a_l)\ (\lambda _l$>$0, \ a_l\in$R) is onto R. It was shown by G. Boole in the 1850's that $\sum ^{p+1} _{j=1}[(\partial w/\partial x) ^{-1}] _{x=T^{-1}_j(w)}=1.$ We give an n-dimensional analogue of this result. The proof makes use of the Griffiths–Harris residue theorem from algebraic geometry.

In [Gorodnik and Nevo, Counting lattice points, J. Reine Angew. Math. 663 (2012), 127–176] an effective solution of the lattice point counting problem in general domains in semisimple S-algebraic groups and affine symmetric varieties was established. The method relies on the mean ergodic theorem for the action of G on G/Γ, and implies uniformity in counting over families of lattice subgroups admitting a uniform spectral gap. In the present paper we extend some methods developed in [Nevo and Sarnak, Prime and almost prime integral points on principal homogeneous spaces, Acta Math. 205 (2010), 361–402] and use them to establish several useful consequences of this property, including:

1. (1) effective upper bounds on lifting for solutions of congruences in affine homogeneous varieties;

2. (2) effective upper bounds on the number of integral points on general subvarieties of semisimple group varieties;

3. (3) effective lower bounds on the number of almost prime points on symmetric varieties;

4. (4) effective upper bounds on almost prime solutions of congruences in homogeneous varieties.

In an earlier paper of Wee Teck Gan and Gordan Savin, the local Langlands correspondence for metaplectic groups over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero was established. In this paper, we formulate and prove a local intertwining relation for metaplectic groups assuming the local intertwining relation for non-quasi-split odd special orthogonal groups.

In this paper we prove a version of curved Koszul duality for $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-graded curved coalgebras and their cobar differential graded algebras. A curved version of the homological perturbation lemma is also obtained as a useful technical tool for studying curved (co)algebras and precomplexes. The results of Koszul duality can be applied to study the category of matrix factorizations $\mathsf{MF}(R,W)$. We show how Dyckerhoff’s generating results fit into the framework of curved Koszul duality theory. This enables us to clarify the relationship between the Borel–Moore Hochschild homology of curved (co)algebras and the ordinary Hochschild homology of the category $\mathsf{MF}(R,W)$. Similar results are also obtained in the orbifold case and in the graded case.

A seminal result due to Wall states that if $x$ is normal to a given base $b$, then so is $rx+s$ for any rational numbers $r,s$ with $r\neq 0$. We show that a stronger result is true for normality with respect to the continued fraction expansion. In particular, suppose $a,b,c,d\in \mathbb{Z}$ with $ad-bc\neq 0$. Then if $x$ is continued fraction normal, so is $(ax+b)/(cx+d)$.

Let $G$ be a connected split reductive group over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ and $X$ a smooth projective geometrically connected curve over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. The $\ell$-adic cohomology of stacks of $G$-shtukas is a generalization of the space of automorphic forms with compact support over the function field of $X$. In this paper, we construct a constant term morphism on the cohomology of stacks of shtukas which is a generalization of the constant term morphism for automorphic forms. We also define the cuspidal cohomology which generalizes the space of cuspidal automorphic forms. Then we show that the cuspidal cohomology has finite dimension and that it is equal to the (rationally) Hecke-finite cohomology defined by V. Lafforgue.

We express Néron functions and Schneider's local $p$-adic height pairing on an abelian variety $A$ with split multiplicative reduction with theta functions and their automorphy factors on the rigid analytic torus uniformizing $A$. Moreover, we show formulas for the $\rho$-splittings of the Poincaré biextension corresponding to Néron's and Schneider's local height pairings.

We study a class of two-variable polynomials called exact polynomials which contains $A$-polynomials of knot complements. The Mahler measure of these polynomials can be computed in terms of a volume function defined on the vanishing set of the polynomial. We prove that the local extrema of the volume function are on the two-dimensional torus and give a closed formula for the Mahler measure in terms of these extremal values. This formula shows that the Mahler measure of an irreducible and exact polynomial divided by $\pi$ is greater than the amplitude of the volume function. We also prove a K-theoretic criterion for a polynomial to be a factor of an $A$-polynomial and give a topological interpretation of its Mahler measure.

We introduce symmetrizing operators of the polynomial ring A[x] in the variable x over a ring A. When A is an algebra over a field k these operators are used to characterize the monic polynomials F(x) of degree n in A[x] such that A[otimes]kk[x](x)/(F(x)) is a free A-module of rank n. We use the characterization to determine the Hilbert scheme parameterizing subschemes of length n of k[x](x).

We describe how the quadratic Chabauty method may be applied to determine the set of rational points on modular curves of genus $g>1$ whose Jacobians have Mordell–Weil rank $g$. This extends our previous work on the split Cartan curve of level 13 and allows us to consider modular curves that may have few known rational points or non-trivial local height contributions at primes of bad reduction. We illustrate our algorithms with a number of examples where we determine the set of rational points on several modular curves of genus 2 and 3: this includes Atkin–Lehner quotients $X_0^+(N)$ of prime level $N$, the curve $X_{S_4}(13)$, as well as a few other curves relevant to Mazur's Program B. We also compute the set of rational points on the genus 6 non-split Cartan modular curve $X_{\scriptstyle \mathrm { ns}} ^+ (17)$.

We show that the virtual cohomological dimension of a Coxeter group is essentially the regularity of the Stanley–Reisner ring of its nerve. Using this connection between geometric group theory and commutative algebra, as well as techniques from the theory of hyperbolic Coxeter groups, we study the behavior of the Castelnuovo–Mumford regularity of square-free quadratic monomial ideals. We construct examples of such ideals which exhibit arbitrarily high regularity after linear syzygies for arbitrarily many steps. We give a doubly logarithmic bound on the regularity as a function of the number of variables if these ideals are Cohen–Macaulay.

Soient $S$ un schéma nœthérien et $f:X\rightarrow S$ un morphisme propre. D’après SGA 4 XIV, pour tout faisceau constructible $\mathscr{F}$ de $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$-modules sur $X$, les faisceaux de $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$-modules $\mathtt{R}^{i}f_{\star }\mathscr{F}$, obtenus par image directe (pour la topologie étale), sont également constructibles : il existe une stratification $\mathfrak{S}$ de $S$ telle que ces faisceaux soient localement constants constructibles sur les strates. À la suite de travaux de N. Katz et G. Laumon, ou L. Illusie, dans le cas particulier où $S$ est génériquement de caractéristique nulle ou bien les faisceaux $\mathscr{F}$ sont constants (de torsion inversible sur $S$), on étudie ici la dépendance de $\mathfrak{S}$ en $\mathscr{F}$. On montre qu’une condition naturelle de constructibilité et modération « uniforme » satisfaite par les faisceaux constants, introduite par O. Gabber, est stable par les foncteurs $\mathtt{R}^{i}f_{\star }$. Si $f$ n’est pas supposé propre, ce résultat subsiste sous réserve de modération à l’infini, relativement à $S$. On démontre aussi l’existence de bornes uniformes sur les nombres de Betti, qui s’appliquent notamment pour les fibres des faisceaux $\mathtt{R}^{i}f_{\star }\mathbb{F}_{\ell }$, où $\ell$ parcourt les nombres premiers inversibles sur $S$.

In this paper we give explicit equations for determinantal rational surface singularities and prove dimension formulas for the t$^1$ and T$^2$ for those singularities.

Vorst's conjecture relates the regularity of a ring with the $\mathbb {A}^{1}$-homotopy invariance of its $K$-theory. We show a variant of this conjecture in positive characteristic.

We discuss meromorphic 1-forms on compact complex manifolds and on complete intersections with isolated singularities. We give a Poincaré–Hopf type formula for them, i.e. we express the Euler characteristic in terms of singularities of a meromorphic 1-form. For that we introduce a suitable notion of an index of a germ of a meromorphic 1-form (with an additional structure) on an isolated complete intersection singularity. For a meromorphic 1-form on a complete intersection V with isolated singularities the indices of the singular points sum up to (plus–minus) the Euler characteristic of a smoothing of V.

We state a conjecture that relates the derived category of smooth representations of a $p$-adic split reductive group with the derived category of (quasi-)coherent sheaves on a stack of L-parameters. We investigate the conjecture in the case of the principal block of ${\rm GL}_n$ by showing that the functor should be given by the derived tensor product with the family of representations interpolating the modified Langlands correspondence over the stack of L-parameters that is suggested by the work of Helm and of Emerton and Helm.

We construct categorical braid group actions from 2-representations of a Heisenberg algebra. These actions are induced by certain complexes which generalize spherical (Seidel–Thomas) twists and are reminiscent of the Rickard complexes defined by Chuang–Rouquier. Conjecturally, one can relate our complexes to Rickard complexes using categorical vertex operators.
