We prove the Kawamata–Viehweg vanishing theorem for surfaces of del Pezzo type over perfect fields of positive characteristic $p>5$. As a consequence, we show that klt threefold singularities over a perfect base field of characteristic $p>5$ are rational. We show that these theorems are sharp by providing counterexamples in characteristic $5$.

We improve upon the local bound in the depth aspect for sup-norms of newforms on $D^\times$, where $D$ is an indefinite quaternion division algebra over ${\mathbb {Q}}$. Our sup-norm bound implies a depth-aspect subconvexity bound for $L(1/2, f \times \theta _\chi )$, where $f$ is a (varying) newform on $D^\times$ of level $p^n$, and $\theta _\chi$ is an (essentially fixed) automorphic form on $\textrm {GL}_2$ obtained as the theta lift of a Hecke character $\chi$ on a quadratic field. For the proof, we augment the amplification method with a novel filtration argument and a recent counting result proved by the second-named author to reduce to showing strong quantitative decay of matrix coefficients of local newvectors along compact subsets, which we establish via $p$-adic stationary phase analysis. Furthermore, we prove a general upper bound in the level aspect for sup-norms of automorphic forms belonging to any family whose associated matrix coefficients have such a decay property.

We introduce a linearised form of the square root of the Todd class inside the Verbitsky component of a hyper-Kähler manifold using the extended Mukai lattice. This enables us to define a Mukai vector for certain objects in the derived category taking values inside the extended Mukai lattice which is functorial for derived equivalences. As applications, we obtain a structure theorem for derived equivalences between hyper-Kähler manifolds as well as an integral lattice associated to the derived category of hyper-Kähler manifolds deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of a K3 surface mimicking the surface case.

Let (R, ${\frak {m}}$) be a Cohen–Macaulay local ring and let I be an ideal. There are at least five algebras built on I whose multiplicity data affect the reduction number r(I) of the ideal. We introduce techniques from the Rees algebra theory of modules to produce estimates for r(I), for classes of ideals of dimension one and two. Previous cases of such estimates were derived for ideals of dimension zero.

We generalize the method of A. R. Booker (Poles of Artin L-functions and the strong Artin conjecture, Ann. of Math. (2) 158 (2003), 1089–1098; MR 2031863(2004k:11082)) to prove a version of the converse theorem of Jacquet and Langlands with relaxed conditions on the twists by ramified idèle class characters.

Let X be a complex-projective contact manifold with $b_2(X)=1$. It has long been conjectured that X should then be rational-homogeneous, or equivalently, that there exists an embedding $X \to {\mathbb P}^n$ whose image contains lines.

We show that X is covered by a compact family of rational curves, called ‘contact lines’, that behave very much like the lines on the rational-homogeneous examples: if $x \in X$ is a general point, then all contact lines through x are smooth, no two of them share a common tangent direction at x, and the union of all contact lines through x forms a cone over an irreducible, smooth base. As a corollary, we obtain that the tangent bundle of X is stable.

We prove new results on the distribution of rational points on ramified covers of abelian varieties over finitely generated fields $k$ of characteristic zero. For example, given a ramified cover $\pi : X \to A$, where $A$ is an abelian variety over $k$ with a dense set of $k$-rational points, we prove that there is a finite-index coset $C \subset A(k)$ such that $\pi (X(k))$ is disjoint from $C$. Our results do not seem to be in the range of other methods available at present; they confirm predictions coming from Lang's conjectures on rational points, and also go in the direction of an issue raised by Serre regarding possible applications to the inverse Galois problem. Finally, the conclusions of our work may be seen as a sharp version of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem for abelian varieties.

A symplectic fibration is a fibre bundle in the symplectic category (a bundle of symplectic fibres over a symplectic base with a symplectic structure group). We find the relation between the deformation quantization of the base and the fibre, and that of the total space. We consider Fedosov's construction of deformation quantization. We generalize the Fedosov construction to the quantization with values in a bundle of algebras. We find that the characteristic class of deformation of a symplectic fibration is the weak coupling form of Guillemin, Lerman, and Sternberg. We also prove that the classical moment map could be quantized if there exists an equivariant connection.

In previous work, Ohno conjectured, and Nakagawa proved, relations between the counting functions of certain cubic fields. These relations may be viewed as complements to the Scholz reflection principle, and Ohno and Nakagawa deduced them as consequences of ‘extra functional equations’ involving the Shintani zeta functions associated to the prehomogeneous vector space of binary cubic forms. In the present paper, we generalize their result by proving a similar identity relating certain degree-$\ell$ fields to Galois groups $D_{\ell }$ and $F_{\ell }$, respectively, for any odd prime $\ell$; in particular, we give another proof of the Ohno–Nakagawa relation without appealing to binary cubic forms.

We compute the $\text{Pin}(2)$-equivariant Seiberg–Witten Floer homology of Seifert rational homology three-spheres in terms of their Heegaard Floer homology. As a result of this computation, we prove Manolescu’s conjecture that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}=-\bar{\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}}$ for Seifert integral homology three-spheres. We show that the Manolescu invariants $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD},$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$ give new obstructions to homology cobordisms between Seifert fiber spaces, and that many Seifert homology spheres $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}(a_{1},\ldots ,a_{n})$ are not homology cobordant to any $-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}(b_{1},\ldots ,b_{n})$. We then use the same invariants to give an example of an integral homology sphere not homology cobordant to any Seifert fiber space. We also show that the $\text{Pin}(2)$-equivariant Seiberg–Witten Floer spectrum provides homology cobordism obstructions distinct from $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD},$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$. In particular, we identify an $\mathbb{F}[U]$-module called connected Seiberg–Witten Floer homology, whose isomorphism class is a homology cobordism invariant.

Let $G$ be a $p$ -adic group that splits over an unramified extension. We decompose $\text{Rep}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}}^{0}(G)$ , the abelian category of smooth level $0$ representations of $G$ with coefficients in $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}=\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell }$ or $\overline{\mathbb{Z}}_{\ell }$ , into a product of subcategories indexed by inertial Langlands parameters. We construct these categories via systems of idempotents on the Bruhat–Tits building and Deligne–Lusztig theory. Then, we prove compatibilities with parabolic induction and restriction functors and the local Langlands correspondence.

A compact semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ induces a Poisson structure $\pi _{\mathbb{S}}$ on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}(\mathfrak{g}^*)$ in $\mathfrak{g}^*$. We compute the moduli space of Poisson structures on $\mathbb{S}(\mathfrak{g}^*)$ around $\pi _{\mathbb{S}}$. This is the first explicit computation of a Poisson moduli space in dimension greater or equal than three around a degenerate (i.e. not symplectic) Poisson structure.

By an influential theorem of Boman, a function $f$ on an open set $U$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ is smooth (${\mathcal{C}}^{\infty }$) if and only if it is arc-smooth, that is, $f\,\circ \,c$ is smooth for every smooth curve $c:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow U$. In this paper we investigate the validity of this result on closed sets. Our main focus is on sets which are the closure of their interior, so-called fat sets. We obtain an analogue of Boman’s theorem on fat closed sets with Hölder boundary and on fat closed subanalytic sets with the property that every boundary point has a basis of neighborhoods each of which intersects the interior in a connected set. If $X\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{d}$ is any such set and $f:X\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is arc-smooth, then $f$ extends to a smooth function defined on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. We also get a version of the Bochnak–Siciak theorem on all closed fat subanalytic sets and all closed sets with Hölder boundary: if $f:X\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is the restriction of a smooth function on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ which is real analytic along all real analytic curves in $X$, then $f$ extends to a holomorphic function on a neighborhood of $X$ in $\mathbb{C}^{d}$. Similar results hold for non-quasianalytic Denjoy–Carleman classes (of Roumieu type). We will also discuss sharpness and applications of these results.

The level of distribution of a complex-valued sequence $b$ measures the quality of distribution of $b$ along sparse arithmetic progressions $nd+a$. We prove that the Thue–Morse sequence has level of distribution $1$, which is essentially best possible. More precisely, this sequence gives one of the first nontrivial examples of a sequence satisfying a Bombieri–Vinogradov-type theorem for each exponent $\theta <1$. This result improves on the level of distribution $2/3$ obtained by Müllner and the author. As an application of our method, we show that the subsequence of the Thue–Morse sequence indexed by $\lfloor n^c\rfloor$, where $1 < c < 2$, is simply normal. This result improves on the range $1 < c < 3/2$ obtained by Müllner and the author and closes the gap that appeared when Mauduit and Rivat proved (in particular) that the Thue–Morse sequence along the squares is simply normal.

We prove analogs of the Bezout and the Bernstein–Kushnirenko–Khovanskii theorems for systems of algebraic differential conditions over differentially closed fields. Namely, given a system of algebraic conditions on the first $l$ derivatives of an $n$-tuple of functions, which admits finitely many solutions, we show that the number of solutions is bounded by an appropriate constant (depending singly-exponentially on $n$ and $l$) times the volume of the Newton polytope of the set of conditions. This improves a doubly-exponential estimate due to Hrushovski and Pillay. We illustrate the application of our estimates in two diophantine contexts: to counting transcendental lattice points on algebraic subvarieties of semi-abelian varieties, following Hrushovski and Pillay; and to counting the number of intersections between isogeny classes of elliptic curves and algebraic varieties, following Freitag and Scanlon. In both cases we obtain bounds which are singly-exponential (improving the known doubly-exponential bounds) and which exhibit the natural asymptotic growth with respect to the degrees of the equations involved.

We apply the endoscopic classification of automorphic forms on $U(3)$ to study the growth of the first Betti number of congruence covers of a Picard modular surface. As a consequence, we establish a case of a conjecture of Sarnak and Xue on cohomology growth.

We show that the Hilbert scheme, that parameterizes all ideals with the same Hilbert function over a Clements–Lindström ring W, is connected. More precisely, we prove that every graded ideal is connected by a sequence of deformations to the lex-plus-powers ideal with the same Hilbert function. This is an analogue of Hartshorne’s theorem that Grothendieck’s Hilbert scheme is connected. We also prove a conjecture by Gasharov, Hibi, and Peeva that the lex ideal attains maximal Betti numbers among all graded ideals in W with a fixed Hilbert function.

A recent paper of Totaro developed a theory of q-ample bundles in characteristic 0. Specifically, a line bundle L on X is q-ample if for every coherent sheaf ℱ on X, there exists an integer m0 such that m≥m0 implies Hi (X,ℱ⊗𝒪(mL))=0 for i>q. We show that a line bundle L on a complex projective scheme X is q-ample if and only if the restriction of L to its augmented base locus is q-ample. In particular, when X is a variety and L is big but fails to be q-ample, then there exists a codimension-one subscheme D of X such that the restriction of L to D is not q-ample.

In this paper, we extend the notion of Shintani descent to general (possibly disconnected) algebraic groups defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. For this, it is essential to treat all the pure inner $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-rational forms of the algebraic group at the same time. We prove that the notion of almost characters (introduced by Shoji using Shintani descent) is well defined for any neutrally unipotent algebraic group, i.e. an algebraic group whose neutral connected component is a unipotent group. We also prove that these almost characters coincide with the ‘trace of Frobenius’ functions associated with Frobenius-stable character sheaves on neutrally unipotent groups. In the course of the proof, we also prove that the modular categories that arise from Boyarchenko and Drinfeld’s theory of character sheaves on neutrally unipotent groups are in fact positive integral, confirming a conjecture due to Drinfeld.

We study the derived category of a complete intersection $X$ of bilinear divisors in the orbifold $\operatorname{Sym}^{2}\mathbb{P}(V)$. Our results are in the spirit of Kuznetsov’s theory of homological projective duality, and we describe a homological projective duality relation between $\operatorname{Sym}^{2}\mathbb{P}(V)$ and a category of modules over a sheaf of Clifford algebras on $\mathbb{P}(\operatorname{Sym}^{2}V^{\vee })$. The proof follows a recently developed strategy combining variation of geometric invariant theory (VGIT) stability and categories of global matrix factorisations. We begin by translating $D^{b}(X)$ into a derived category of factorisations on a Landau–Ginzburg (LG) model, and then apply VGIT to obtain a birational LG model. Finally, we interpret the derived factorisation category of the new LG model as a Clifford module category. In some cases we can compute this Clifford module category as the derived category of a variety. As a corollary we get a new proof of a result of Hosono and Takagi, which says that a certain pair of non-birational Calabi–Yau 3-folds have equivalent derived categories.
