Let $Y$ be a homology sphere which contains an incompressible torus. We show that $Y$ cannot be an $L$-space, i.e. the rank of $\widehat{\text{HF}}(Y)$ is greater than $1$. In fact, if the homology sphere $Y$ is an irreducible $L$-space, then $Y$ is $S^{3}$, the Poincaré sphere $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}(2,3,5)$ or hyperbolic.

We study the possible weights of an irreducible two-dimensional mod p representation of which is modular in the sense that it comes from an automorphic form on a definite quaternion algebra with centre F which is ramified at all places dividing p, where F is a totally real field. In most cases we determine the precise list of possible weights; in the remaining cases we determine the possible weights up to a short and explicit list of exceptions.

We give counterexamples to Okounkov’s log-concavity conjecture for Littlewood–Richardson coefficients.

Building on the work of Davenport and Schmidt, we mainly prove two results. The first one is a version of Gel'fond's transcendence criterion which provides a sufficient condition for a complex or p-adic number $\xi$ to be algebraic in terms of the existence of polynomials of bounded degree taking small values at $\xi$ together with most of their derivatives. The second one, which follows from this criterion by an argument of duality, is a result of simultaneous approximation by conjugate algebraic integers for a fixed number $\xi$ that is either transcendental or algebraic of sufficiently large degree. We also present several constructions showing that these results are essentially optimal.

Let R(n,θ) denote the number of representations of the natural number n as the sum of four squares, each composed only with primes not exceeding nθ/2. When θ>e−1/3 a lower bound for R(n,θ) of the expected order of magnitude is established, and when θ>365/592, it is shown that R(n,θ)>0 holds for large n. A similar result is obtained for sums of three squares. An asymptotic formula is obtained for the related problem of representing an integer as the sum of two squares and two squares composed of small primes, as above, for any fixed θ>0. This last result is the key to bound R(n,θ) from below.

The width of a Lagrangian is the largest capacity of a ball that can be symplectically embedded into the ambient manifold such that the ball intersects the Lagrangian exactly along the real part of the ball. Due to Dimitroglou Rizell, finite width is an obstruction to a Lagrangian admitting an exact Lagrangian cap in the sense of Eliashberg–Murphy. In this paper we introduce a new method for bounding the width of a Lagrangian $Q$ by considering the Lagrangian Floer cohomology of an auxiliary Lagrangian $L$ with respect to a Hamiltonian whose chords correspond to geodesic paths in $Q$. This is formalized as a wrapped version of the Floer–Hofer–Wysocki capacity and we establish an associated energy–capacity inequality with the help of a closed–open map. For any orientable Lagrangian $Q$ admitting a metric of non-positive sectional curvature in a Liouville manifold, we show the width of $Q$ is bounded above by four times its displacement energy.

Fix $d\geqslant 2$ and a field $k$ such that $\operatorname{char}k\nmid d$. Assume that $k$ contains the $d$th roots of $1$. Then the irreducible components of the curves over $k$ parameterizing preperiodic points of polynomials of the form $z^{d}+c$ are geometrically irreducible and have gonality tending to $\infty$. This implies the function field analogue of the strong uniform boundedness conjecture for preperiodic points of $z^{d}+c$. It also has consequences over number fields: it implies strong uniform boundedness for preperiodic points of bounded eventual period, which in turn reduces the full conjecture for preperiodic points to the conjecture for periodic points. Our proofs involve a novel argument specific to finite fields, in addition to more standard tools such as the Castelnuovo–Severi inequality.

We develop a theory of commensurability of groups, of rings, and of modules. It allows us, in certain cases, to compare sizes of automorphism groups of modules, even when those are infinite. This work is motivated by the Cohen–Lenstra heuristics on class groups.

Let $N/ F$ be an odd-degree Galois extension of number fields with Galois group $G$ and rings of integers ${\mathfrak{O}}_{N} $ and ${\mathfrak{O}}_{F} = \mathfrak{O}$. Let $ \mathcal{A} $ be the unique fractional ${\mathfrak{O}}_{N} $-ideal with square equal to the inverse different of $N/ F$. B. Erez showed that $ \mathcal{A} $ is a locally free $\mathfrak{O}[G] $-module if and only if $N/ F$ is a so-called weakly ramified extension. Although a number of results have been proved regarding the freeness of $ \mathcal{A} $ as a $ \mathbb{Z} [G] $-module, the question remains open. In this paper we prove that $ \mathcal{A} $ is free as a $ \mathbb{Z} [G] $-module provided that $N/ F$ is weakly ramified and under the hypothesis that for every prime $\wp $ of $\mathfrak{O}$ which ramifies wildly in $N/ F$, the decomposition group is abelian, the ramification group is cyclic and $\wp $ is unramified in $F/ \mathbb{Q} $. We make crucial use of a construction due to the first author which uses Dwork’s exponential power series to describe self-dual integral normal bases in Lubin–Tate extensions of local fields. This yields a new and striking relationship between the local norm-resolvent and the Galois Gauss sum involved. Our results generalise work of the second author concerning the case of base field $ \mathbb{Q} $.

We study the restricted category 𝒪 for an affine Kac–Moody algebra at the critical level. In particular, we prove the first part of the Feigin–Frenkel conjecture: the linkage principle for restricted Verma modules. Moreover, we prove a version of the Bernstein–Gelfand–Gelfand-reciprocity principle and we determine the block decomposition of the restricted category 𝒪. For the proofs, we need a deformed version of the classical structures, so we mostly work in a relative setting.

We show that the finiteness of the fundamental groups of the smooth locus of lower dimensional log Fano pairs would imply the finiteness of the local fundamental group of Kawamata log terminal (klt) singularities. As an application, we verify that the local fundamental group of a three-dimensional klt singularity and the fundamental group of the smooth locus of a three-dimensional Fano variety with canonical singularities are always finite.

Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold, endowed with an effective reduced divisor $B=\sum Y_{k}$ having simple normal crossing support. We consider a closed form of $(1,1)$ -type $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ on $X$ whose corresponding class $\{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\}$ is nef, such that the class $c_{1}(K_{X}+B)+\{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\}\in H^{1,1}(X,\mathbb{R})$ is pseudo-effective. A particular case of the first result we establish in this short note states the following. Let 𝒱 be a complete discrete valuation ring of unequal characteristic with perfect residue field. Let be a separated smooth formal 𝒱-scheme, 𝒵 be a normal crossing divisor of , be the induced formal log-scheme over 𝒱 and be the canonical morphism. Let X and Z be the special fibers of and 𝒵, T be a divisor of X and ℰ be a log-isocrystal on overconvergent along T, that is, a coherent left -module, locally projective of finite type over . We check the relative duality isomorphism: . We prove the isomorphism , which implies their holonomicity as -modules. We obtain the canonical morphism ρℰ : uT,+(ℰ)→ℰ(†Z). When ℰ is moreover an isocrystal on overconvergent along T, we prove that ρℰ is an isomorphism.

Given a quasi-projective complex variety X and a projective variety Y, one may endow the set of morphisms, Mor(X, Y), from X to Y with the natural structure of a topological space. We introduce a convenient technique (namely, the notion of a functor on the category of ‘smooth curves’) for studying these function complexes and for forming continuous pairings of such. Building on this technique, we establish several results, including (1) the existence of cap and join product pairings in topological cycle theory; (2) the agreement of cup product and intersection product for topological cycle theory; (3) the agreement of the motivic cohomology cup product with morphic cohomology cup product; and (4) the Whitney sum formula for the Chern classes in morphic cohomology of vector bundles.

In this work, we study the intersection cohomology of Siegel modular varieties. The goal is to express the trace of a Hecke operator composed with a power of the Frobenius endomorphism (at a good place) on this cohomology in terms of the geometric side of Arthur’s invariant trace formula for well-chosen test functions. Our main tools are the results of Kottwitz about the contribution of the cohomology with compact support and about the stabilization of the trace formula, Arthur’s L2 trace formula and the fixed point formula of Morel [Complexes pondérés sur les compactifications de Baily–Borel. Le cas des variétés de Siegel, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 21 (2008), 23–61]. We ‘stabilize’ this last formula, i.e. express it as a sum of stable distributions on the general symplectic groups and its endoscopic groups, and obtain the formula conjectured by Kottwitz in [Shimura varieties and λ-adic representations, in Automorphic forms, Shimura varieties and L-functions, Part I, Perspectives in Mathematics, vol. 10 (Academic Press, San Diego, CA, 1990), 161–209]. Applications of the results of this article have already been given by Kottwitz, assuming Arthur’s conjectures. Here, we give weaker unconditional applications in the cases of the groups GSp4 and GSp6.

We show that, with some technical conditions, an Abelian monoidal category admits a monoidal embedding into the category of bimodules over a ring. The case of semisimple rigid monoidal categories is studied in more detail.

We prove a version of Montel’s theorem for analytic functions over a non-Archimedean complete valued field. We propose a definition of normal family in this context, and give applications of our results to the dynamics of non-Archimedean entire functions.

We prove modularity of some two-dimensional, $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}2$-adic Galois representations over a totally real field that are nearly ordinary at all places above $2$ and that are residually dihedral. We do this by employing the strategy of Skinner and Wiles, using Hida families, together with the $2$-adic patching method of Khare and Wintenberger. As an application we deduce modularity of some elliptic curves over totally real fields that have good ordinary or multiplicative reduction at places above $2$.

The notion of Berman–Gibbs stability was originally introduced by Berman for $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties $X$. We show that the pair $(X,-K_{X})$ is K-stable (respectively K-semistable) provided that $X$ is Berman–Gibbs stable (respectively semistable).

Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a field $k$. In this paper we define a descending filtration $\{F^{r}\}_{r\geqslant 0}$ of the group $\mathit{CH}_{0}(A)$ and prove that the successive quotients $F^{r}/F^{r+1}\otimes \mathbb{Z}[1/r!]$ are isomorphic to the group $(K(k;A,\dots ,A)/Sym)\otimes \mathbb{Z}[1/r!]$, where $K(k;A,\dots ,A)$ is the Somekawa $K$-group attached to $r$-copies of the abelian variety $A$. In the special case when $k$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ and $A$ has split multiplicative reduction, we compute the kernel of the map $\mathit{CH}_{0}(A)\otimes \mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{2}]\rightarrow \text{Hom}(Br(A),\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z})\otimes \mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{2}]$, induced by the pairing $\mathit{CH}_{0}(A)\times Br(A)\rightarrow \mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$.
