We prove that the group of normalized cohomological invariants of degree $3$ modulo the subgroup of semidecomposable invariants of a semisimple split linear algebraic group $G$ is isomorphic to the torsion part of the Chow group of codimension-$2$ cycles of the respective versal $G$-flag. In particular, if $G$ is simple, we show that this factor group is isomorphic to the group of indecomposable invariants of $G$. As an application, we construct nontrivial cohomological invariants for indecomposable central simple algebras.

In this paper we study – for a semistable scheme – a comparison map between its log-syntomic cohomology and the p-adic étale cohomology of its generic fiber. The image can be described in terms of what Bloch and Kato call the local points of the underlying motive. The results extend a proven conjecture of Schneider which treats the good reduction case. The proof uses the theory of logarithmic schemes, some crystalline cohomology theories defined on them and various techniques in p-adic Hodge theory, in particular the Fontaine–Jannsen conjecture proven by Kato and Tsuji as well as Fontaine‘s rings of p-adic periods and their properties. The comparison result may become useful with respect to cycle class maps.

Let X be an arbitrary variety over a finite field k and p=char k,n∈ N. We will construct a complex of étale sheaves on X together with trace isomorphism from the highest étale cohomology group of this complex onto Z/p$^n$Z such that for every constructible Z/p$^n$Z-sheaf on X the Yoneda pairing is a nondegenerate pairing of finite groups. If X is smooth, this complex is the Gersten resolution of the logarithmic de Rham–Witt sheaf introduced by Gros and Suwa. The proof is based on the special case proven by Milne when the sheaf is constant and X is smooth, as well as on a purity theorem which in turn follows from a theorem about the cohomological dimension of C$_i$-fields due to Kato and Kuzumaki. If the existence of the Lichtenbaum complex is proven, the theorem will be the p-part of a general duality theorem for varieties over finite fields.

Using a result of E. Viehweg, we study the behavior of the log canonical thresholds of divisors along free rational curves. This leads to a bound on the log canonical thresholds of divisors in terms of the degree of free rational curves on Fano manifolds of Picard number 1.

Let [ell ]>3 be a prime. Fix a regular character χ of F[ell ]2× of order ≤ [ell ] − 1, and an integer M prime to [ell ]. Let f∈S2(Γ0(M[ell ]2)) be a newform which is supercuspidal of type χ at [ell ]. For an indefinite quaternion algebra over Q of discriminant dividing the level of f, there is a local quaternionic Hecke algebra T of type χ associated to f. The algebra T acts on a quaternionic cohomological module M. We construct a Taylor–Wiles system for M, and prove that T is the universal object for a deformation problem (of type χ at [ell ] and semi-stable outside) of the Galois representation ρ¯f over F¯[ell ] associated to f; that T is complete intersection and that the module M is free of rank 2 over T. We deduce a relation between the quaternionic congruence ideal of type χ for f and the classical one.

We improve Kolyvagin’s upper bound on the order of the p-primary part of the Shafarevich–Tate group of an elliptic curve of rank one over a quadratic imaginary field. In many cases, our bound is precisely that predicted by the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectural formula.

Let X be a smooth complex variety of dimension at most two, and let F be its function field. We prove that the K-groups of F are divisible above the dimension of X, and that the K-groups of X are divisible-by-finite. We also describe the torsion in the K-groups of F and X.

In our previous paper we suggested a conjecture relating the structure of the small quantum cohomology ring of a smooth Fano variety of Picard number 1 to the structure of its derived category of coherent sheaves. Here we generalize this conjecture, make it more precise, and support it by the examples of (co)adjoint homogeneous varieties of simple algebraic groups of Dynkin types $\mathrm {A}_n$ and $\mathrm {D}_n$, that is, flag varieties $\operatorname {Fl}(1,n;n+1)$ and isotropic orthogonal Grassmannians $\operatorname {OG}(2,2n)$; in particular, we construct on each of those an exceptional collection invariant with respect to the entire automorphism group. For $\operatorname {OG}(2,2n)$ this is the first exceptional collection proved to be full.

We formulate and prove a Sato–Tate equidistribution law for Drinfeld modules.

A relation between the Euler characteristics of the Milnor fibres of a real analytic function is derived from a simple identity involving complex monodromy and complex conjugation. A corollary is the result of Coste and Kurdyka that the Euler characteristic of the local link of an irreducible algebraic subset of a real algebraic set is generically constant modulo 4. A similar relation for iterated Milnor fibres of ordered sets of functions is used to define topological invariants of ordered collections of algebraic subsets.

Let $K$ be a finitely generated extension of $\mathbb {Q}$. We consider the family of $\ell $-adic representations ($\ell $ varies through the set of all prime numbers) of the absolute Galois group of $K$, attached to $\ell $-adic cohomology of a separated scheme of finite type over $K$. We prove that the fields cut out from the algebraic closure of $K$by the kernels of the representations of the family are linearly disjoint over a finite extension of K. This gives a positive answer to a question of Serre.

In this paper we construct indefinite theta series for lattices of arbitrary signature $(p,q)$ as ‘incomplete’ theta integrals, that is, by integrating the theta forms constructed by the second author with J. Millson over certain singular $q$-chains in the associated symmetric space $D$. These chains typically do not descend to homology classes in arithmetic quotients of $D$, and consequently the theta integrals do not give rise to holomorphic modular forms, but rather to the non-holomorphic completions of certain mock modular forms. In this way we provide a general geometric framework for the indefinite theta series constructed by Zwegers and more recently by Alexandrov, Banerjee, Manschot, and Pioline, Nazaroglu, and Raum. In particular, the coefficients of the mock modular forms are identified with intersection numbers.

Let P be a principal bundle with semisimple compact simply connected structure group G over a compact simply connected four-manifold M. In this paper we give explicit formulas for the rational homotopy groups and cohomology algebra of the gauge group and of the space of (irreducible) connections modulo gauge transformations for any such bundle.

For a field $\text{k}$, we prove that the $i$th homology of the groups $\operatorname{GL}_{n}(\text{k})$, $\operatorname{SL}_{n}(\text{k})$, $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\text{k})$, $\operatorname{SO}_{n,n}(\text{k})$, and $\operatorname{SO}_{n,n+1}(\text{k})$ with coefficients in their Steinberg representations vanish for $n\geqslant 2i+2$.

We prove a representation stability result for the codimension-one cohomology of the level-three congruence subgroup of $\mathbf{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$. This is a special case of a question of Church, Farb, and Putman which we make more precise. Our methods involve proving finiteness properties of the Steinberg module for the group $\mathbf{SL}_{n}(K)$ for $K$ a field. This also lets us give a new proof of Ash, Putman, and Sam’s homological vanishing theorem for the Steinberg module. We also prove an integral refinement of Church and Putman’s homological vanishing theorem for the Steinberg module for the group $\mathbf{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$.

Let $L$ be a very ample line bundle on a projective scheme $X$ defined over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$ with ${\rm char}\,\Bbbk \neq 2$. We say that $(X,L)$ satisfies property $\mathsf {QR}(k)$ if the homogeneous ideal of the linearly normal embedding $X \subset {\mathbb {P}} H^{0} (X,L)$ can be generated by quadrics of rank less than or equal to $k$. Many classical varieties, such as Segre–Veronese embeddings, rational normal scrolls and curves of high degree, satisfy property $\mathsf {QR}(4)$. In this paper, we first prove that if ${\rm char}\,\Bbbk \neq 3$ then $({\mathbb {P}}^{n} , \mathcal {O}_{{\mathbb {P}}^{n}} (d))$ satisfies property $\mathsf {QR}(3)$ for all $n \geqslant 1$ and $d \geqslant 2$. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of property $\mathsf {QR}(3)$ for any projective scheme. Specifically, we prove that (i) if $X \subset {\mathbb {P}} H^{0} (X,L)$ is $m$-regular then $(X,L^{d} )$ satisfies property $\mathsf {QR}(3)$ for all $d \geqslant m$, and (ii) if $A$ is an ample line bundle on $X$ then $(X,A^{d} )$ satisfies property $\mathsf {QR}(3)$ for all sufficiently large even numbers $d$. These results provide affirmative evidence for the expectation that property $\mathsf {QR}(3)$ holds for all sufficiently ample line bundles on $X$, as in the cases of Green and Lazarsfeld's condition $\mathrm {N}_p$ and the Eisenbud–Koh–Stillman determininantal presentation in Eisenbud et al. [Determinantal equations for curves of high degree, Amer. J. Math. 110 (1988), 513–539]. Finally, when ${\rm char}\,\Bbbk = 3$ we prove that $({\mathbb {P}}^{n} , \mathcal {O}_{{\mathbb {P}}^{n}} (2))$ fails to satisfy property $\mathsf {QR}(3)$ for all $n \geqslant 3$.

Extending our previous work on eigenvalues of closed surfaces and work of Otal and Rosas, we show that a complete Riemannian surface $S$ of finite type and Euler characteristic $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}(S)<0$ has at most $-\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}(S)$ small eigenvalues.

We prove vanishing of the μ-invariant of the p-adic Katz L-function in N. M. Katz [p-adic L-functions for CM fields, Invent. Math. 49 (1978), 199–297].

Let D>0 be the fundamental discriminant of a real quadratic field, and h(D) its class number. In this paper, by refining Ono's idea, we show that for any prime p>3, [sharp ]{0<D<X|h(D)[nequiv]0(mod p)}>>p√(X)/logX.

We consider the restriction of the reflection representation to various reductive dual pairs in exceptional groups, and determine the correspondence of generic representations.
