Let (R,m) be a Noetherian local ring and UR=Spec(R)−{m} be the punctured spectrum of R. Gabber conjectured that if R is a complete intersection of dimension three, then the abelian group Pic(UR) is torsion-free. In this note we prove Gabber’s statement for the hypersurface case. We also point out certain connections between Gabber’s conjecture, Van den Bergh’s notion of non-commutative crepant resolutions and some well-studied questions in homological algebra over local rings.

Geoffrey Robinson conjectured in 1996 that the $p$-part of character degrees in a $p$-block of a finite group can be bounded in terms of the center of a defect group of the block. We prove this conjecture for all primes $p\neq 2$ for all finite groups. Our argument relies on a reduction by Murai to the case of quasi-simple groups which are then studied using deep results on blocks of finite reductive groups.

We give an equivalent definition of the local volume of an isolated singularity $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}{\rm Vol}_{\text {BdFF}}(X,0)$ given in [S. Boucksom, T. de Fernex, C. Favre, The volume of an isolated singularity. Duke Math. J. 161 (2012), 1455–1520] in the $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein case and we generalize it to the non-$\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein case. We prove that there is a positive lower bound depending only on the dimension for the non-zero local volume of an isolated singularity if $X$ is Gorenstein. We also give a non-$\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein example with ${\rm Vol}_{\text {BdFF}}(X,0)=0$, which does not allow a boundary $\Delta $ such that the pair $(X,\Delta )$ is log canonical.

We consider logarithmic averages, over friable integers, of non-negative multiplicative functions. Under logarithmic, one-sided or two-sided hypotheses, we obtain sharp estimates that improve upon known results in the literature regarding both the quality of the error term and the range of validity. The one-sided hypotheses correspond to classical sieve assumptions. They are applied to provide an effective form of the Johnsen–Selberg prime power sieve.

Let X be a projective curve of genus 2 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. The Frobenius map on X induces a rational map on the moduli scheme of rank-2 bundles. We show that up to isomorphism, there is only one (up to tensoring by an order two line bundle) semi-stable vector bundle of rank 2 (with determinant equal to a theta characteristic) whose Frobenius pull-back is not semi-stable. The indeterminacy of the Frobenius map at this point can be resolved by introducing Higgs bundles.

We prove the analog of the Morel–Voevodsky localization theorem for framed motivic spaces. We deduce that framed motivic spectra are equivalent to motivic spectra over arbitrary schemes, and we give a new construction of the motivic cohomology of arbitrary schemes.

We give an upper bound for the exponential sum [sum ]Mm=1 e2iπf(m) in terms of M and λ, where λ is a small positive number which denotes the size of the fourth derivative of the real valued function f. The classical van der Corput's exponent 1/14 is improved into 1/13 by reducing the problem to a mean square value theorem for triple exponential sums.

We show that if $\mathcal {A}\subset \{1,\ldots,N\}$ has no solutions to $a-b=n^2$ with $a,b\in \mathcal {A}$ and $n\geq 1$, then

By constructing suitable Borcherds forms on Shimura curves and using Schofer’s formula for norms of values of Borcherds forms at CM points, we determine all of the equations of hyperelliptic Shimura curves $X_{0}^{D}(N)$. As a byproduct, we also address the problem of whether a modular form on Shimura curves $X_{0}^{D}(N)/W_{D,N}$ with a divisor supported on CM divisors can be realized as a Borcherds form, where $X_{0}^{D}(N)/W_{D,N}$ denotes the quotient of $X_{0}^{D}(N)$ by all of the Atkin–Lehner involutions. The construction of Borcherds forms is done by solving certain integer programming problems.

We prove a generalization to the context of real geometry of an intersection formula for the vanishing cycle functor, which in the complex context is due to Dubson, Lê, Ginsburg and Sabbah (after a conjecture of Deligne). It is also a generalization of similar results of Kashiwara and Schapira, where these authors work with a suitable assumption about the micro-support of the corresponding constructible complex of sheaves. We only use a similar assumption about the support of the corresponding characteristic cycle so that our result can be formulated in the language of constructible functions and Lagrangian cycles.

Let X be a smooth projective curve. We consider the dual reductive pair , over X, where H splits on an étale two-sheeted covering . Let BunG (respectively, BunH) be the stack of G-torsors (respectively, H-torsors) on X. We study the functors FG and FH between the derived categories D(BunG) and D(BunH), which are analogs of the classical theta-lifting operators in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. Assume n=m=1 and H nonsplit, that is, with connected. We establish the geometric Langlands functoriality for this pair. Namely, we show that FG :D(BunH)→D(BunG) commutes with Hecke operators with respect to the corresponding map of Langlands L-groups LH→LG. As an application, we calculate Waldspurger periods of cuspidal automorphic sheaves on BunGL2 and Bessel periods of theta-lifts from to . Based on these calculations, we give three conjectural constructions of certain automorphic sheaves on (one of them makes sense for -modules only).

Let $X$ be a noetherian scheme with dualizing complex and ${\mathcal{A}}$ a coherent ${\mathcal O}_{X}$-algebra with involution of the first kind $\tau$. We develop in this work a coherent hermitian Witt theory for $({\mathcal{A}},\tau)$. As an application we construct a Gersten–Witt spectral sequence which converges to the coherent hermitian Witt theory of $({\mathcal{A}},\tau)$. We show then that the associated Gersten–Witt complex is exact if $X$ is the spectrum of a smooth semilocal ring and ${\mathcal{A}}$ is locally free as ${\mathcal O}_{X}$-module.

Let $G$ be an inner anisotropic form of an unitary group of 3 variables over Q, such that $G_R≃U(2,1)$, and π be an automorphic representation of G(A) whose archimedean component π∞ is a degenerate limit of discrete series; such a π never occurs in the cohomology (coherent or étale) of a Shimura variety. We show that however it does ‘appear’ in the coherent cohomology of some line bundle over an associated Griffiths-Schmid variety. Moreover we study cup products between such cohomology classes and some other automorphic cohomology classes and we prove some non-vanishing results.

Crystal base of the level 0 part of the modified quantum affine algebra $\tilde{U}_q (\widehat{{\frak s}{\frak l}_2})_0$ is given by path. Weyl group actions, extremal vectors and crystal structure of all irreducible components are described explicitly.

We consider the natural $A_{\infty }$-structure on the $\mathrm{Ext}$-algebra $\mathrm{Ext}^*(G,G)$ associated with the coherent sheaf $G=\mathcal{O}_C\oplus \mathcal{O}_{p_1}\oplus \cdots \oplus \mathcal{O}_{p_n}$ on a smooth projective curve $C$, where $p_1,\ldots,p_n\in C$ are distinct points. We study the homotopy class of the product $m_3$. Assuming that $h^0(p_1+\cdots +p_n)=1$, we prove that $m_3$ is homotopic to zero if and only if $C$ is hyperelliptic and the points $p_i$ are Weierstrass points. In the latter case we show that $m_4$ is not homotopic to zero, provided the genus of $C$ is greater than $1$. In the case $n=g$ we prove that the $A_{\infty }$-structure is determined uniquely (up to homotopy) by the products $m_i$ with $i\le 6$. Also, in this case we study the rational map $\mathcal{M}_{g,g}\to \mathbb{A}^{g^2-2g}$ associated with the homotopy class of $m_3$. We prove that for $g\ge 6$ it is birational onto its image, while for $g\le 5$ it is dominant. We also give an interpretation of this map in terms of tangents to $C$ in the canonical embedding and in the projective embedding given by the linear series $|2(p_1+\cdots +p_g)|$.

We revisit the paper [Automorphy lifting for residually reducible$l$-adic Galois representations, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 28 (2015), 785–870] by the third author. We prove new automorphy lifting theorems for residually reducible Galois representations of unitary type in which the residual representation is permitted to have an arbitrary number of irreducible constituents.

We prove asymptotic formulas for the number of rational points of bounded height on certain equivariant compactifications of the affine plane.

We extend Rumely's local-global principle (as refined by Cantor, Roquette, and the author, i.e. with local splitting conditions) to the case of algebraic stacks, in Artin's sense, over rings of (S-)integers of global fields. The nongeometrically connected case is also taken into account, as well as (in some instances) the case where local conditions are imposed at all places.

We study some basic properties of schematic homotopy types and the schematization functor. We describe two different algebraic models for schematic homotopy types, namely cosimplicial Hopf alegbras and equivariant cosimplicial algebras, and provide explicit constructions of the schematization functor for each of these models. We also investigate some standard properties of the schematization functor that are helpful for describing the schematization of smooth projective complex varieties. In a companion paper, these results are used in the construction of a non-abelian Hodge structure on the schematic homotopy type of a smooth projective variety.

We establish a connection between motivic cohomology classes over the Siegel threefold and non-critical special values of the degree-four $L$-function of some cuspidal automorphic representations of $\text{GSp}(4)$. Our computation relies on our previous work [On higher regulators of Siegel threefolds I: the vanishing on the boundary, Asian J. Math. 19 (2015), 83–120] and on an integral representation of the $L$-function due to Piatetski-Shapiro.
