We state a conjecture that relates the derived category of smooth representations of a $p$-adic split reductive group with the derived category of (quasi-)coherent sheaves on a stack of L-parameters. We investigate the conjecture in the case of the principal block of ${\rm GL}_n$ by showing that the functor should be given by the derived tensor product with the family of representations interpolating the modified Langlands correspondence over the stack of L-parameters that is suggested by the work of Helm and of Emerton and Helm.

In this paper we study the $\mathbb {C}^*$-fixed points in moduli spaces of Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface for a complex semisimple Lie group and its real forms. These fixed points are called Hodge bundles and correspond to complex variations of Hodge structure. We introduce a topological invariant for Hodge bundles that generalizes the Toledo invariant appearing for Hermitian Lie groups. An important result of this paper is a bound on this invariant which generalizes the Milnor–Wood inequality for a Hodge bundle in the Hermitian case, and is analogous to the Arakelov inequalities of classical variations of Hodge structure. When the generalized Toledo invariant is maximal, we establish rigidity results for the associated variations of Hodge structure which generalize known rigidity results for maximal Higgs bundles and their associated maximal representations in the Hermitian case.

Let $G$ be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of separably good characteristic $p>0$ for $G$. Under these assumptions, a Springer isomorphism $\phi : \mathcal {N}_{\mathrm {red}}(\mathfrak {g}) \rightarrow \mathcal {V}_{\mathrm {red}}(G)$ from the nilpotent scheme of $\mathfrak {g}$ to the unipotent scheme of $G$ always exists and allows one to integrate any $p$-nilpotent element of $\mathfrak {g}$ into a unipotent element of $G$. One should wonder whether such a punctual integration can lead to an integration of restricted $p$-nil $p$-subalgebras of $\mathfrak {g}= \operatorname {Lie}(G)$. We provide a counter-example of the existence of such an integration in general, as well as criteria to integrate some restricted $p$-nil $p$-subalgebras of $\mathfrak {g}$ (that are maximal in a certain sense). This requires the generalisation of the notion of infinitesimal saturation first introduced by Deligne and the extension of one of his theorems on infinitesimally saturated subgroups of $G$ to the previously mentioned framework.

The goal of this note is to show that in the case of ‘transversal intersections’ the ‘true local terms’ appearing in the Lefschetz trace formula are equal to the ‘naive local terms’. To prove the result, we extend the strategy used in our previous work, where the case of contracting correspondences is treated. Our new ingredients are the observation of Verdier that specialization of an étale sheaf to the normal cone is monodromic and the assertion that local terms are ‘constant in families’. As an application, we get a generalization of the Deligne–Lusztig trace formula.

Let $W = \mathbb {C}[t,t^{-1}]\partial _t$ be the Witt algebra of algebraic vector fields on $\mathbb {C}^\times$ and let $V\!ir$ be the Virasoro algebra, the unique nontrivial central extension of $W$. In this paper, we study the Poisson ideal structure of the symmetric algebras of $V\!ir$ and $W$, as well as several related Lie algebras. We classify prime Poisson ideals and Poisson primitive ideals of $\operatorname {S}(V\!ir)$ and $\operatorname {S}(W)$. In particular, we show that the only functions in $W^*$ which vanish on a nontrivial Poisson ideal (that is, the only maximal ideals of $\operatorname {S}(W)$ with a nontrivial Poisson core) are given by linear combinations of derivatives at a finite set of points; we call such functions local. Given a local function $\chi \in W^*$, we construct the associated Poisson primitive ideal through computing the algebraic symplectic leaf of $\chi$, which gives a notion of coadjoint orbit in our setting. As an application, we prove a structure theorem for subalgebras of $V\!ir$ of finite codimension and show, in particular, that any such subalgebra of $V\!ir$ contains the central element $z$, substantially generalising a result of Ondrus and Wiesner on subalgebras of codimension one. As a consequence, we deduce that $\operatorname {S}(V\!ir)/(z-\zeta )$ is Poisson simple if and only if $\zeta \neq ~0$.

We consider the Weil–Petersson gradient vector field of renormalized volume on the deformation space of convex cocompact hyperbolic structures on (relatively) acylindrical manifolds. In this paper we prove the conjecture that the flow has a global attracting fixed point at the unique structure $M_{\rm geod}$ with minimum convex core volume.

Let $G_\Gamma \curvearrowright X$ and $G_\Lambda \curvearrowright Y$ be two free measure-preserving actions of one-ended right-angled Artin groups with trivial center on standard probability spaces. Assume they are irreducible, i.e. every element from a standard generating set acts ergodically. We prove that if the two actions are stably orbit equivalent (or merely stably $W^*$-equivalent), then they are automatically conjugate through a group isomorphism between $G_\Gamma$ and $G_\Lambda$. Through work of Monod and Shalom, we derive a superrigidity statement: if the action $G_\Gamma \curvearrowright X$ is stably orbit equivalent (or merely stably $W^*$-equivalent) to a free, measure-preserving, mildly mixing action of a countable group, then the two actions are virtually conjugate. We also use the works of Popa and Ioana, Popa and Vaes to establish the $W^*$-superrigidity of Bernoulli actions of all infinite conjugacy classes groups having a finite generating set made of infinite-order elements where two consecutive elements commute, and one has a nonamenable centralizer: these include one-ended nonabelian right-angled Artin groups, but also many other Artin groups and most mapping class groups of finite-type surfaces.

We establish a Harder–Narasimhan formalism for modifications of $G$-bundles on the Fargues–Fontaine curve. The semi-stable stratum of the associated stratification of the ${B^+_{{\rm dR}}}$-Grassmannian coincides with the variant of the weakly admissible locus defined by Viehmann, and its classical points agree with those of the basic Newton stratum. When restricted to minuscule affine Schubert cells, the stratification corresponds to the Harder–Narasimhan stratification of Dat, Orlik and Rapoport. We also study basic geometric properties of the strata, and the relation to the Hodge–Newton decomposition.

Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri and Vafa constructed a real-valued invariant for Calabi–Yau manifolds, which is now called the BCOV invariant. In this paper, we extend the BCOV invariant to such pairs $(X,D)$, where $X$ is a compact Kähler manifold and $D$ is a pluricanonical divisor on $X$ with simple normal crossing support. We also study the behavior of the extended BCOV invariant under blow-ups. The results in this paper lead to a joint work with Fu proving that birational Calabi–Yau manifolds have the same BCOV invariant.

We consider rational representations of a connected linear algebraic group $\mathbb {G}$ over a field $k$ of positive characteristic $p > 0$. We introduce a natural extension $M \mapsto \Pi (\mathbb {G})_M$ to $\mathbb {G}$-modules of the $\pi$-point support theory for modules $M$ for a finite group scheme $G$ and show that this theory is essentially equivalent to the more ‘intrinsic’ and ‘explicit’ theory $M \mapsto \mathbb {P}\mathfrak{C}(\mathbb {G})_M$ of supports for an algebraic group of exponential type, a theory which uses $1$-parameter subgroups $\mathbb {G}_a \to \mathbb {G}$. We extend our support theory to bounded complexes of $\mathbb {G}$-modules, $C^\bullet \mapsto \Pi (\mathbb {G})_{C^\bullet }$. We introduce the tensor triangulated category $\mathit {StMod}(\mathbb {G})$, the Verdier quotient of the bounded derived category $D^b(\mathit {Mod}(\mathbb {G}))$ by the thick subcategory of mock injective modules. Our support theory satisfies all the ‘standard properties’ for a theory of supports for $\mathit {StMod}(\mathbb {G})$. As an application, we employ $C^\bullet \mapsto \Pi (\mathbb {G})_{C^\bullet }$ to establish the classification of $(r)$-complete, thick tensor ideals of $\mathit {stmod}(\mathbb {G})$ in terms of locally $\mathit {stmod}(\mathbb {G})$-realizable subsets of $\Pi (\mathbb {G})$ and the classification of $(r)$-complete, localizing subcategories of $\mathit {StMod}(\mathbb {G})$ in terms of locally $\mathit {StMod}(\mathbb {G})$-realizable subsets of $\Pi (\mathbb {G})$.

In this paper we investigate the quantity of diagonal quartic surfaces $a_0 X_0^4 + a_1 X_1^4 + a_2 X_2^4 +a_3 X_3^4 = 0$ which have a Brauer–Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle. We are able to find an asymptotic formula for the quantity of such surfaces ordered by height. The proof uses a generalization of a method of Heath-Brown on sums over linked variables. We also show that there exists no uniform formula for a generic generator in this family.

Let $f : X \to S$ be a family of smooth projective algebraic varieties over a smooth connected quasi-projective base $S$, and let $\mathbb {V} = R^{2k} f_{*} \mathbb {Z}(k)$ be the integral variation of Hodge structure coming from degree $2k$ cohomology it induces. Associated to $\mathbb {V}$ one has the so-called Hodge locus $\textrm {HL}(S) \subset S$, which is a countable union of ‘special’ algebraic subvarieties of $S$ parametrizing those fibres of $\mathbb {V}$ possessing extra Hodge tensors (and so, conjecturally, those fibres of $f$ possessing extra algebraic cycles). The special subvarieties belong to a larger class of so-called weakly special subvarieties, which are subvarieties of $S$ maximal for their algebraic monodromy groups. For each positive integer $d$, we give an algorithm to compute the set of all weakly special subvarieties $Z \subset S$ of degree at most $d$ (with the degree taken relative to a choice of projective compactification $S \subset \overline {S}$ and very ample line bundle $\mathcal {L}$ on $\overline {S}$). As a corollary of our algorithm we prove conjectures of Daw–Ren and Daw–Javanpeykar–Kühne on the finiteness of sets of special and weakly special subvarieties of bounded degree.

We give cases in which nearby cycles commute with pushforward from sheaves on the moduli stack of shtukas to a product of curves over a finite field. The proof systematically uses the property that taking nearby cycles of Satake sheaves on the Beilinson–Drinfeld Grassmannian with parahoric reduction is a central functor together with a ‘Zorro's lemma’ argument similar to that of Xue [Smoothness of cohomology sheaves of stacks of shtukas, Preprint (2020), arXiv:2012.12833]. As an application, for automorphic forms at the parahoric level, we characterize the image of tame inertia under the Langlands correspondence in terms of two-sided cells.

One fundamental consequence of a scheme $X$ being proper is that the functor classifying maps from $X$ to any other suitably nice scheme or algebraic stack is representable by an algebraic stack. This result has been generalized by replacing $X$ with a proper algebraic stack. We show, however, that it also holds when $X$ is replaced by many examples of algebraic stacks which are not proper, including many global quotient stacks. This leads us to revisit the definition of properness for stacks. We introduce the notion of a formally proper morphism of stacks and study its properties. We develop methods for establishing formal properness in a large class of examples. Along the way, we prove strong $h$-descent results which hold in the setting of derived algebraic geometry but not in classical algebraic geometry. Our main applications are algebraicity results for mapping stacks and the stack of coherent sheaves on a flat and formally proper stack.

We study the Rouquier dimension of wrapped Fukaya categories of Liouville manifolds and pairs, and apply this invariant to various problems in algebraic and symplectic geometry. On the algebro-geometric side, we introduce a new method based on symplectic flexibility and mirror symmetry to bound the Rouquier dimension of derived categories of coherent sheaves on certain complex algebraic varieties and stacks. These bounds are sharp in dimension at most $3$. As an application, we resolve a well-known conjecture of Orlov for new classes of examples (e.g. toric $3$-folds, certain log Calabi–Yau surfaces). We also discuss applications to non-commutative motives on partially wrapped Fukaya categories. On the symplectic side, we study various quantitative questions including the following. (1) Given a Weinstein manifold, what is the minimal number of intersection points between the skeleton and its image under a generic compactly supported Hamiltonian diffeomorphism? (2) What is the minimal number of critical points of a Lefschetz fibration on a Liouville manifold with Weinstein fibers? We give lower bounds for these quantities which are to the best of the authors’ knowledge the first to go beyond the basic flexible/rigid dichotomy.
