Gerard van der Geer has stepped down as president of the Foundation Compositio Mathematica as of January 2023. He is replaced by Ben Moonen.
Gerard was managing editor of the journal Compositio Mathematica from 1993 until 2004. After this, he became a board member of the Foundation and served as its president from 2013 until the end of 2022.
Gerard played a decisive role in the Foundation's decision, twenty years ago, to end its contract with Kluwer Academic Publishers and to move to a joint venture with the London Mathematical Society. As a result, the subscription price of the journal was significantly lowered, and now the remaining profits are fed back into mathematics through sponsorship of numerous conferences, the prizes of the European Mathematical Society, and support to new independent journals.
Gerard was the driving force behind the launch of the journal Algebraic Geometry by the Foundation Compositio Mathematica, as well as the recent launch of the journal Moduli.
These journals, as well as the Foundation, owe much of their current success to Gerard van der Geer. We are very grateful to him for his many contributions.
