Infrared spectra of 2-ethoxyethanol (ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, EGME) adsorbed on Camontmorillonite were obtained using diffuse-reflectance infrared-Fourier-transform (DRIFT) and attenuated total-reflectance (ATR) spectroscopy. The molecular conformation of adsorbed EGME shows predominantly a gauche configuration for the CH2-CH2 linkage as originally present in the liquid. The orientation of the adsorbed EGME molecule in the interlamellar region of the clay was deduced from measurements of the polarized ATR spectra. The planar zig-zag skeleton of the molecule appears to have its long axis tilted at an angle of 44° to the clay surface; the molecule is in van der Waals contact with both adjacent surfaces. Further, the plane of the skeleton of the molecule is tilted at an angle of 69° to the clay surface. This orientation leads to estimates of the d-value of the clay-EGME complex and of the surface area occupied by each molecule. These values are in excellent agreement with independent measurements of both parameters. The full surface coverage on montmorillonite is represented by a single layer of tilted EGME molecules shared by two adjacent clay sheets; each molecule occupies a total surface area consisting of one portion (25.4 Å2) on the lower surface of the interlayer plus another portion (14.8 Å2) on the upper surface. The implication of this model for materials such as kaolinite, where adsorption takes place on the external surface only, is that on these materials each EGME molecule occupies 20 Å2 at full surface coverage.

X-ray diffraction patterns of oriented mounts of clay minerals are often used in clay mineralogy for qualitative and quantitative purposes. Fequently occurring stacking defects, in particular, can be characterized by this technique. Modeling of these diffraction profiles has become an important tool in obtaining structural information about the nature of stacking order. Manual matching of calculated and observed patterns is time consuming and user dependent. Automatic refinement procedures are, therefore, desirable. An improved approach for the treatment of disordered layer structures within a Rietveld refinement is presented here. The recursive calculation of structure factors, similar to that of the simulation program DIFFaX, was introduced in the Rietveld code BGMN. Complete implementation is formulated within the interpreter language of the Rietveld code and is transparent as well as flexible. Such a method has opened the application of Rietveld refinement to patterns of oriented mounts where only basal reflections of stacking disordered structures were recorded. The DIFFaX code was used to simulate basal reflections of illite-smectite mixed layers (I-S) with different ratios of illitic and smectitic layers and with different degrees of long-range ordering (Reichweite). Rietveld refinements with these simulated patterns were used to evaluate the application of this new approach. Several I-S with different degrees of ordering were also chosen as tests for the refinement of basal reflections. The samples were prepared as standard airdried and ethylene glycol-solvated, oriented specimens. Realistic structural parameters were obtained for the composition and ordering of the I-S.

Shear strength of saturated, remolded clay mineral samples was measured in an attempt to relate strength to forces acting between clay particles. The fine fractions of the clays, purified when necessary, were consolidated to different void ratios and subjected to quick, translatory shear in a direct shear device. Relative values for shear strength were obtained in this way. Interparticle forces in the clays were altered and the effect on shear strength was observed.

For a high-swelling, Na-saturated montmorillonite, strength at constant void ratio decreased with increasing salt concentration. To explain the decrease in strength with decrease in force of repulsion between particles a model is suggested where strength results from the force of repulsion resisting displacement of particles in the shear plane. Addition of small amounts of dispersing and of soil-conditioning chemicals had little effect on shear strength.

Calcium montmorillonite had a lower strength than sodium montmorillonite when compared at the same void ratios. This is related to the lower surface area of interaction and lower repulsion found with divalent ions.

Water content at the liquid limit showed the same dependence upon interparticle forces in the montmorillonite clays as did shear strength.

In kaolinite, interparticle forces of attraction result in a structure or particle arrangement which has the major influence on shear strength. A clay at low pH which was flocculated in a network, edge-to-face structure owing to presence of positive edge-charge had higher strength than a dispersed clay, but a clay flocculated by electrolyte which produced a lamellar, face-to-face structure had a lower strength.

Point defect centers in hydrothermal kaolinite have been investigated using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Kaolinite was sampled in petrographically well-defined materials coming from uranium-rich hydrothermally altered volcanic tuffs (Nopal I uranium deposit, Chihuahua, Mexico), which show extensive kaolinization and an intense redistribution of uranium. Several kaolinite parageneses were defined according to their origin (fissure fillings and feldspar pseudomorphs); their location relative to the U6+ mineralization at the scale of the deposit (mineralized breccia pipe vs. barren surrounding rhyolitic tuffs), and at the scale of mineral assemblages; and their crystal chemistry.

Two types of centers of axial symmetry were identified (A- and A′-centers) and represent positive holes trapped on apical oxygens (Si-O−-centers). A-centers were stable to 400°C, whereas A′-centers annealed at 350°C. A relation between defect-center concentration and U content demonstrates that natural irradiation was responsible for these centers. On the other hand, defect-center concentration was not directly linked to the origin (fissural or feldspar pseudomorph) or the crystal chemistry (structural order and substitutional Fe3+ content) of the kaolinite. According to petrographic data, and with respect to the relative thermal stability of A- and A′-centers, two successive irradiations of kaolinite were evidenced: (1) originally during crystallization of kaolinite from radioactive hydrothermal solutions, and (2) permanently when kaolinite was in contact with secondary U-silicates, which led to the formation of A′-centers.

Because of the short half-life of U, these two radiation-induced centers were created by short-lived elements of the U-decay series. As a consequence, variations of defect-center concentration possibly reflect variations in radioactive disequilibrium during the history of the alteration system. This provides a unique tool for tracing the dynamics of the transfer of radionuclides in the geosphere: kaolinite may be used as a sensitive in situ dosimeter, which may be useful in the fields of weathering petrology and nuclear waste management.

Laterite profiles developed from granite in southwestern Australia were studied by scanning electron microscopy. The morphology of soil materials reflects the mineralogy of secondary minerals formed from feldspar. In the saprolite, etched feldspar surfaces are coated with kaolinite or radiating, spherical aggregates of tubular halloysite. In the lower pallid zone these minerals have replaced most of the feldspar. In the upper pallid zone a porous framework has developed consisting mainly of quartz and gibbsite with 5-/μm euhedral gibbsite crystals in voids. Halloysite crystals in the upper pallid zone are partly unrolled and have splayed ends. Differences in mineralogy and morphology between profiles are thought to be due to variations in the intensity of leaching.

Allophanes with SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratios from 1.38 to 1.92 were heated at temperatures up to 500°C, and the changes induced were investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy (IR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Heat treatment caused the IR absorption band near 1000 cm−1 due to Si-O stretching to shift towards higher frequencies, and the band near 450 cm−1 due to O-Si-O bending to increase markedly in intensity. These results are probably due to condensation of SiO tetrahedra, following breakdown of Si-O-Al linkages and dehydroxylation of SiOH groups. Concurrent intensity increase of the IR absorption at about 700 cm−1 suggested an increase in the amount of 4-coordinated Al in the heated materials. ‘Imogolite structures’ were decomposed progressively at higher temperatures and were almost absent at about 400°C, as indicated by the weakening and disappearance of the IR band at 348 cm−1 and of the XRD reflections at 2.25 and 1.40 Å. The XRD reflection at 3.3–3.45 Å shifted to about 3.6 Å, probably as a result of thermal condensation of the silica component. The observed thermal changes were much greater for samples with low SiO2Al2O3 ratios (1.38–1.51) than for those with high ratios (1.81–1.92), indicating a lower thermal stability for the former materials. Thus, the thermal stability of allophanes appears to be related to the content of ‘imogolite structures’ and to the polymerization status of the silica component.

In studies on the fate of aluminium in the environment, nontronite and saponite have been obtained by synthesis in reducing alkaline conditions close to those prevailing in poorly drained soils developed from limestones. The two minerals obtained have different structures and organizations corresponding to two different growth and/or maturation mechanisms. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy of ultrathin sections of a synthetic aluminous nontronite embedded in resin showed the presence of crystallites consisting of two to ten co-terminating parallel layers, indicating synchronous growth. Electron diffraction showed that the individual crystallites had hk-ordering, i.e., orientation of layers with respect to the six-fold pseudosymmetry of the unit cell. Deposits of a synthetic saponite included hk-ordered crystallites and crinkled films with turbostratic stacking. The two saponite phases had slightly different b dimensions. Lattice fringe images of sections of saponite embedded in resin showed a high angular disorientation of the layers in the stacking direction, suggesting multiple nucleation and growth of individual layers, subsequently aggregated with imperfect parallelism.

Exploration of the synthetic conditions of the aluminous nontronite indicated that calcium was essential for an hk-ordered product. Syntheses using potassium or sodium hydroxides and carbonates for pH control gave poorly organized nontronites. Hydrazine was not essential for nontronite formation, but better crystallized products—judging by their IR spectra—were obtained in its presence by maintaining reducing conditions in the early stages of synthesis. Attempts to prepare ferruginous beidellites under similar conditions to those in which aluminous nontronites formed were unsuccessful.

The most prominent authigenic reaction in Holocene tuffaceous sediments at Teels Marsh, Nevada, is the hydration of rhyolitic glass by interstitial brines and the subsequent formation of phillipsite. This reaction has the form: rhyolitic glass + H2O → hydrous alkali alumninosilicate gel → phillipsite. Phillipsite is the most abundant authigenic phase in the tuffaceous sediments (>95%), analcime is the next most abundant phase, and clinoptilolite occurs as a trace mineral in the <2-mm fraction. Analcime forms by the reaction of phillipsite and Na+. Gaylussite and searlesite also are common authigenic phases at Teels Marsh. The concentration of silica in the interstitial brines is controlled by one or more of the authigenic reactions at less than 100 ppm. A stoichiometric equation for the reaction of phillipsite to analcime at Teels Marsh is:

Sodium and potassium activities of brines associated with both phillipsite and analcime were used to estimate the equilibrium constant for this reaction as 3.04 × 10−5. The ΔG0 value for the reaction is +6.2 kcal/mole at 25°C and 1 atm pressure. The estimated ΔG0 value of phillipsite, using this reaction, is −1072.8 kcal/mole at 25°C and 1 atm.

Kaolinites of all kinds (fine, ‘fireclay,’ ‘type IV,’ etc.), some of which do not expand or expand incompletely with the usual intercalation methods used for comparison, are expanded completely by treatment of dry (110°C) clay with dry CsCl salt, followed by contact with hydrazine for 1 day at 65°C and then with DMSO overnight at 90°C. Comparison treatments were grinding in KOAc, soaking in hydrazine, and Li-DMSO, as well as combination of these. Following the Cs-hydrazine-DMSO treatment, the 7.2 Å spacing of 1:1 dioctahedral layer silicates shifts to 11.2 Å and the 11.2 Å/(7.2 + 11.2 Å) ratio ≃1.0. The trioctahedral 1:1 layer silicates and chlorite are not expanded by the Cs-hydrazine-DMSO procedure.

Extensive hydrothermal alteration is observed around volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. These deposits are related to Late Cretaceous volcanism in various parts of the Eastern Pontide province. Mineral assemblages resulting from alteration consist of mostly clay minerals and silica polymorphs, some sulfate minerals, and scarce zeolite minerals. The clay minerals are kaolinite, illite, and smectite. These minerals were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), and differential thermal analysis (DTA)-thermal gravimetry (TG) techniques. The illite and the toseki deposits are a result of hydrothermal alteration of dacitic-andesitic volcanites. Two groups of bentonite deposits occur; the first mainly formed by hydrothermal solution whereas the second group resulted from halmyrolysis.

The smectite in these alteration zones is generally montmorillonitic in composition and the interlayer cation is mostly Ca and lesser amounts of Na. The SiO2 and Fe2O3 contents of the hydrothermal bentonites are higher than those of the halmyrolysis smectites; however, the MgO content of both groups is similar. The Na2O and K2O contents of both groups are generally <0.5%. The hydrothermal bentonites are not plastic and have open honeycomb microtextures, although the halmyrolitic smectites are plastic with ultrafine and rod-shaped textures. Illite, which contains some smectite layers, is a 1M polymorph, and has an asymmetry to the low-angle side of the XRD peaks. The impure illite deposits contain various combinations of smectite, kaolinite and gypsum, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, goetite, and quartz. The illite has >35 wt. % Al2O3. The toseki raw material, which may be possibly useful as a porcelain raw material, is composed mainly of illite, kaolinite and quartz, or illite and quartz. The crystallinity of the kaolinite is poor.

A series of reduced-charge (RC) hectorites were prepared by multiple heat (250°C) treatments of Mg-saturated hectorites (SHCa-1 ). Cation exchange capacity (CEC) measurements and alkylammonium exchange indicated that a decrease in layer charge occurred with each Mg-250 treatment. Chemical analyses showed that decreases in structural Li and increases in structural Mg contents coincided with charge reduction. Fluorescence measurements of adsorbed quinoline indicated that the hectorite surface was acidified during charge reduction; hydroxyl group deprotonation is a possible source for the acidity. Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) indicated that the Mg-250 treatment induced the loss of structural Li and shifted the SiO stretch band to a position similar to that in talc. The relative intensities of the OH and SiO stretch bands in FTIR spectra suggest that some of the hydroxyl groups in hectorite were lost, possibly by deprotonation. However, thermogravimetric data (TG) reveal no significant difference in the hydroxyl contents of the hectorites.

The FTIR spectra, CEC, layer charge, chemical, and TG data all supported the view that Mg substitution for octahedral Li occurred which resulted in a more “talc-like” structure. Charge reduction in smectites is evidently a general phenomenon and can be induced by heat treatment with the proper exchangeable cation. The ability to reduce the charge of hectorites makes it possible to prepare a series of clays which vary in charge but lack structural Fe. Such RC smectites should be suitable for expandable clay mineral studies which utilize spectroscopic techniques that are sensitive to Fe content.

Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), adsorption and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques were used to determine the fractal dimensions (D) of 3 natural reference clays: 1) a kaolinite (KGa-2); 2) a hectorite (SHCa-1), and 3) a Ca-montmorillonite (STx-1). The surfaces of these clays were found to be fractal with D values close to 2.0. This is consistent with the common description of clay mineral surfaces as smooth and planar. Some surface irregularities were observed for hectorite and Ca-montmorillonite as a result of impurities in the materials. The SAXS method generated comparable D values for KGa-2 and STx-1. These results are supported by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SAXS and adsorption methods were found to probe the surface irregularities of the clays while the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique seems to reflect the mass distribution of certain sites in the material. Since the surface nature of clays is responsible for their reactivity in natural systems, SAXS and adsorption techniques would be the methods of choice for their fractal characterization. Due to its wider applicable characterization size-range, the SAXS method appears to be better suited for the determination of the fractal dimensions of clay minerals.

The chemical and structural properties of Mg smectites in the Vicálvaro sepiolite deposit have been studied in detail. The characterization was performed on different size-fractions of selected smectitic samples (5−2 µm; 2−1 µm; 1−0.5 µm; <0.5 µm and <0.1 µm). The chemical compositions of individual particles (5−1 µm) and of bulk undifferentiated fine fractions (1−<0.1 µm) were determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy-scanning electron microscopy and interpreted with the aid of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) methods. The XRD and IR data demonstrate that all of the Mg smectite materials studied are mainly composed of a complex mixture of stevensite, saponite and mica-type minerals. Although the presence or absence of saponite cannot be confirmed absolutely, stevensite is a significant component of these Mg smectites. This is proven by the calculated layer charge reduction after the Hofmann-Klemen effect. The results are in close agreement with the suggested mechanism of topotactic overgrowth of stevensite on pre-existing phyllosilicate templates. This characterizes clay diagenesis in saline-lake systems.

Millimetric to centimetric green grains widespread in pelagic calcareous sediments recovered at a water depth of3000 m near the Costa Rica margin were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Samples were collected, during the Ticoflux II expedition, from the upper bioturbated part of four sedimentary cores (0.13–3.75 m below seafloor). The sediments are calcareous and siliceous nanofossil oozes (coccoliths, diatoms, radiolarians, etc.).

Green grains show generally a concentric zoning with a green rim in which smectite largely predominates over pyrite and a black core in which pyrite is prevalent. Observations by SEM indicate that this zoning results from a progressive inward alteration and replacement of the accumulations of pyrites by smectites. The high-resolution TEM observations of the smectite-pyrite interfaces suggest that the replacement of pyrites by smectite occurs through a dissolution-precipitation process with the formation of a gel. The pyrite matrix is composed of a huge number of very small (0.5–22 µm) pyrite octahedra, a typical texture resulting from the pyritization of organic material in early diagenetic environments.

The accurate mineralogical and crystal chemical characterization of the smectites indicate that they are Fe3+-montmorillonites (Fe3+-rich smectite with a dominant octahedral charge, rarely recorded in the literature). The formation of such Fe3+-montmorillonites forming green grains could be explained by two successive diagenetic redox stages: (1) reducing stage: early pyritization of the organic matter by microbial reduction within reducing micro-environments; (2) oxidizing stage: Fe3+-montmorillonite crystallized in space liberated after dissolution of pyrite connected with the rebalancing of the redox conditions of the micro-environments with the oxidizing surrounding sediments.

To clarify the weathering process of volcanic glass to allophane, solid-state 29Si and 27Al magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals of four Japanese volcanic glasses and two (Al- and Si-rich) allophanes were assigned. The volcanic glasses showed a broad 29Si NMR signal between −80 and −120 ppm with the peak centered at ~ −104 ppm, indicating that they were rich in Si-O-Si bridging structure (silica gel-like polymer Si). Aluminum was present in tetrahedral form in the four volcanic glass samples. In both Al- and Si-rich allophanes, octahedral Al (3 ppm by 27Al NMR) and imogolite-like Si (Q33VIAl, −78 ppm by 29Si NMR) were the major components. In a Si-rich allophane, NMR signals centered at around −85 ppm for 29Si and 55 ppm for 27Al were also observed, although it is possible that those signals were derived from impurities. Impurities could have originated from the soils and/or been unexpectedly synthesized during the purification procedures, e.g. during hot 2% Na2CO3 treatments. Based on the NMR spectra of size-fractionated soil samples, the weathering process of volcanic glass to allophane was proposed as follows: (1) dissolution of Al from volcanic glass accompanied by the transformation of IVAl to VIAl; (2) formation of a gibbsite-like sheet resulting from the hydrolysis of the dissolved Al; (3) dissolution of silica gel-like polymer Si in volcanic glass resulting in the formation of monosilicic acid; and (4) formation of Si(OH)(OVI,Al)3 structure (Q33VIAl) as a result of the reaction between the gibbsite-like sheet and the monosilicic acid. These formation reactions of allophane could occur in solution as well as on the surface of volcanic glass.

Technical limitations have restricted investigations of rhizosphere mineralogy. Various analytical techniques were applied to assess root-mineral associations and dynamics in natural soils under corn production. Soil samples were collected between four and five weeks after planting and included rhizospheric and non-rhizospheric soils, and undisturbed block samples containing corn root systems. Analytical techniques were applied and included; X-ray diffraction, optical microscope, SEM, EDXRA with SEM, transmission electron microscope (TEM), electron energy loss spectra with TEM, high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and microanalysis with HRTEM. The mineralogy of the rhizosphere differed from that of the bulk soil. Within the rhizosphere, minute platy particles which were mostly vermiculitic minerals, were particularly concentrated near or on root surfaces. These platy mineral particles were not attached to the entire area, but only to certain areas of root surfaces. Therefore, we report quantitative evidence for mineralogical changes in the rhizosphere in soil environments.

Gibbsite samples of various particle sizes (0.2–80 μm) were heated at 250°C in a series of straight-chain primary alcohols under the autogenous vapor pressure of the alcohol (alcohothermal treatment of gibbsite). The treatment in ethanol yielded pure boehmite, the morphology of which was similar to that of the boehmite obtained by hydrothermal treatment of gibbsite. In middle-range alcohols, the boehmite yields were low (50% if 80 μm gibbsite was used), and the products were contaminated by a poorly crystallized phase, having a χ-alumina-like structure. The products preserved the morphology of the originating gibbsite, this feature being similar to the thermal dehydration of gibbsite. Complete conversion to boehmite was also attained in mineral oil (a hydrocarbon mixture, which was used as a limit of higher alcohol. The morphology of the boehmite formed in this medium was identical to that of the product prepared by thermal dehydration of gibbsite in a sealed bomb without a medium. If fine particle-size gibbsite was used, the yield of boehmite decreased and the yield of the poorly crystallized phase increased in all the media.

The reaction mechanisms may be discussed in terms of the reported mechanisms for the thermal and hydrothermal formations of boehmite from gibbsite. Thus, in lower alcohols boehmite formed by a dissolution-recrystallization mechanism, whereas in middle-range or higher alcohols it formed by intra-particle hydrothermal reaction mechanism proposed by de Boer and coworkers for the thermal dehydration of gibbsite. The difference in behavior in middle-range and higher alcohols can be explained in terms of the solubility of water in the medium: In the middle-range alcohols, water molecules formed by partial dehydration of gibbsite were removed from the gibbsite particles into the medium so that dehydration proceeded in a manner similiar to that of thermal dehydration, whereas in the higher alcohols, the low solubility of water in the medium allowed the water molecules to remain on the surface of the particles, thereby promoting the complete hydrothermal formation of boehmite.
