The effect of acid type and concentration on the reaction rate and products of dissolution of hectorite in inorganic acids was investigated. The dissolution of hectorite in hydrochloric (HCl), nitric (HNO3) and sulphuric (H2SO4) acids was characterized using quantitative chemical analysis, infrared (IR) and multinuclear MAS NMR spectroscopies. The rate of dissolution increased with acid concentration and decreased in the order HCl ≥ HNO3 = H2SO4 at the same molar concentration. No differences were found in the reaction products of hectorite treated with the three acids. The rate of Li dissolution was slightly greater than that of Mg at lesser acid concentrations (0.25 M), indicating that protons preferentially attack Li octahedra. The gradual changes in the Si-O IR bands reflects the extent of hectorite dissolution. The analysis of 29Si MAS NMR spectra relative peak intensities with dissolution time and acid concentration provided direct dissolution rates for tetrahedral (Q3) Si. After acid dissolution, most Si was bound in a three dimensional framework site (Q4), but a substantial part also occurred in the Si(OSi)3OH (Q31OH) and Si(OSi)2(OH)2 (Q220H) environments. These three sites probably occur in a hydrous amorphous silica phase. Both AlJV and AlVt rapidly disappeared from 27Al MAS NMR spectra of the dissolution products with acid treatment. The changes in IR and MAS NMR spectra of hectorite due to acid dissolution are similar to those of montmorillonite.

Current knowledge of clay mineralogy and changing concepts of clay behavior have suggested a re-examination of the experimental data concerning adsorbed water. Data published between 1935 and 1959 have been studied and evaluated. In some instances this requires a reinterpretation of data that may lead to inferences or conclusions not intended by the original author. The intention of the re-evalution of data is to clarify understanding of the nature of adsorbed water and to suggest fruitful avenues for future research. While all literature on the subject has not been included, a concerted effort has been made to include representative data from all viewpoints and experimental methods. Data reviewed come under the following headings: X-ray and electron diffraction, density, dielectric and magnetic, thermodynamic, diffusion and fluid flow, freezing, and rigid water films.

Utilizing present knowledge of crystal and surface chemistry of clay leads to the following conclusions: (a) Positions of the oxygen atoms of the adsorbed water molecules have been established by X-ray diffraction of vermiculite. These positions preclude both the ice structure and the Hendricks-Jefferson net structure even after modification to accommodate the exchangeable ions, (b) Density of water sorbed on Na montmorillonite has a minimum value of about 0.97 g/cm3 at a water content of 0.7 g H2O/g clay (approximately the plastic limit). For water contents less than 0.7 the density rapidly rises to about 1.4, and for water contents greater than 0.7 the density gradually rises until at about 6.5 g H2O/g clay the density of the adsorbed water equals that of normal liquid water. (c) The differential entropy of water adsorbed on kaolinite has a minimum value approximately that of ice; however, (1) this minimum occurs at about 0.7 of a monolayer, and (2) the integral entropy is greater than that for normal liquid water up to at least two molecular layers. The apparently contradictory entropy of sorbed water on montmorillonitic clay has not been resolved but is believed to be at least partially associated with clay swelling. (d) Diffusion and fluid flow phenomena are shown to be extremely sensitive to clay fabric; therefore, it is the writer's opinion that diffusion and fluid flow data on loosely compacted clay are of little help in ascertaining the structure of the adsorbed water phase. (e) Adsorbed water is easily supercooled and an appreciable fraction of the adsorbed water remains unfrozen after ice has once formed.

The two major hypotheses indicate that the nature of the adsorbed water is. (1) a solidlike substance, o. (2) a two-dimensional fluid. In the writer’s opinion the only data that cannot be adequately explained by both of the hypotheses are the integral entropy data on kaolinite. The integral entropy data favor the two-dimensional fluid hypothesis; however, the paucity of data requires that this be a very tentative conclusion.

The major difficulty encountered in the re-examination of data for this review was that a rather poorly defined clay surface was employed by various investigators. If progress is to be made in unraveling the water-clay complex, it is deemed absolutely essential that experiments be carried out on very carefully defined and controlled clay surfaces. The nature of adsorbed water as interpreted from physico-chemical data on water-clay systems is no better than the purity of the clay surface regardless of the accuracy and precision of the measurements.

Hydroxide and oxyhydroxide products of aluminum were formed at room temperature at an initial Al concentration of 2 × 10-3 M, pH 8.2, and at varying concentrations of organic and inorganic ligands commonly found in nature. The effectiveness of the ligands in promoting the formation of noncrystalline products over crystalline Al(OH)3 polymorphs was found to be in the following order: phthalate ≅ succinate < glutamate < aspartate < oxalate < silicate ≅ fluoride < phosphate < salicylate ≅ malate < tannate < citrate < tartrate. The lowest ligand/Al molar ratio at which the production of Al hydroxides or oxyhydroxides was inhibited ranged from 0.02 to 15. Above critical ligand/Al ratios, crystalline products were inhibited and ligands coprecipitated with noncrystalline products which remained unchanged for at least 5 months. Polydentate and large ligands generally were more inhibitive than those with fewer functional groups or of smaller size.

The perturbing ligands promoted and stabilized the formation of pseudoboehmite over crystalline Al(OH)3 polymorphs in the following sequence: chloride < sulfate < phthalate ≅ succinate < glutamate < silicate < aspartate < phosphate < salicylate ≅ malate < tannate < citrate < tartrate. The optimal range of the ligand/Al molar ratios for the formation of pseudoboehmite varied, for example, from 0.005–0.015 for tartrate to 600–1000 for chloride. Pseudoboehmite was not formed in the presence of fluoride.

Li+, Na+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Cu2+, or Zn2+-saturated samples of a cis-vacant montmorillonite from Linden, Bavaria, were heated to temperatures between 200–700°C. Half of each heated sample was subsequently autoelaved under steam at 200°C (∼1.5 MPa) to promote rehydroxylation. The smectites were characterized by cation-exchange capacity (CEC), determination of exchangeable cations, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and thermoanalytical investigations of evolved water in a thermobalance linked with a mass spectrometer.

Changes in the montmorillonite structure and dehydroxylation behavior are related to three respective mechanisms: type of the interlayer cation, interlayer cation radius, and the movement of the interlayer cation. The migration of the smaller Li+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ ions after heating produces a strong reduction of CEC due to the Hofmann-Klemen effect before the initiation of dehydroxylation. Thereafter, the CEC of these smectites remains constant over a large temperature interval during dehydroxylation. After rehydroxylation, Cu2+ and Zn2+-rich samples release 16–23 meq/100 g of Mg2+ from the structure. No Mg2+ release is observed for the Li+-rich montmorillonite. Also the dehydroxylation behavior after rehydroxylation differs between the Cu2+, Zn2+, and Li+-rich samples. The mass curves of the evolved water during thermoanalysis of the rehydroxylated Cu2+ and Zn2+-rich smectites show a peak doublet between 480–700°C. For the Li+, Na+, Ca2+, and Sr2+-rich montmorillonites, the second peak disappeared and a third peak at ∼760°C developed after rehydroxylation. The resulting structure after rehydroxylation of all samples is celadonite-like.

Dilute aqueous smectite suspensions are well suited to convert into functional nanofilms. The functionalization is performed by ion exchange of amphiphilic molecules carrying the desired functionality. A functionalized clay mineral nanofilm is obtained by the organization of the molecules at the clay surface and by the organization of the elementary clay platelets in the film. Two techniques are presented: self-assembling and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB). Self-assembling is a very simple experiment, but the organizational order of the clay mineral particles is low. Nevertheless, films with nonlinear optical properties which are able to generate frequency-doubled light have been produced. The drawback of disorder of the clay platelets in the film can be largely overcome with the LB technique. Well organized films are obtained. In the presence of amphiphilic ruthenium(II)-bipyridine complexes, nonlinear optical properties are measured. In the presence of two dyes, oxacarbocyanine and rhodamine B, simultaneously adsorbed, efficient energy transfer between the donor (oxacarbocyanine) and the acceptor (rhodamine B) is measured. Fundamental research into the organization of molecules at clay mineral platelets is necessary to optimize the materials for specific applications.

The cation exchange capacity (CEC) is one of the most important properties of clays in terms of their performance in both natural and technical processes. For decades, common methods for determining exchangeable cations have failed when calcareous clays or soils were examined, because calcite is at least partly dissolved throughout the exchange experiment which in turn increases measureable Ca2+ concentrations. As a result, exchangeable Ca2+ and the sum of exchangeable cations by far exceed the amount of negative charges. In the past, the silver-thiourea method (AgTU) has been modified to overcome this problem (AgTUcalcite), but is unsatisfactory as the method is laborious. In the present study three new methods based on two alternative metal complexes, cobalt(III) hexamine (CoHex) and copper(II) triethylenetetramine (Cu-trien), are proposed. The optimum solid/liquid ratios of these methods and the optimum complex concentration of Cu-trien are reported, depending on the mineralogical composition of the samples. The key development is that the exchange solutions are saturated with respect to calcite prior to the experiment. Approximately 70–90% of the dissolution of calcite present as an admixture in a clay sample is suppressed in the subsequent cation exchange experiment, but not all. The Ca2+ exchange is not suppressed and there is no evidence for any precipitation of this Ca2+. Three possibilities for how to handle this problem are discussed, one of which is to perform no further correction. The resulting error arises from the remaining calcite solubility of the different solutions after pre-treatment with calcite. This corresponds to errors of 0.2–1.3 (CoHexcalcite)and 0.7–8.4 (Cu-triencalcite) meq/100 gCa2+ for samples with small and large CEC values, respectively. As a consequence of the poor performance of Cu-triencalcite for samples with large CEC, a more concentrated Cu-trien5 × calcite solution was developed which performed much better: 0.1–0.8 meq/100 g(Cu-trien5 × calcite). For Cu-trien5 × calcite and CoHexcalcite at least, the errors are in the range of the non-systematic scattering for exchangeable Ca2+ determination. Therefore, the methods suggested provide ‘operationally correct’ Ca2+ values without additional effort. Moreover, owing to the high selectivity of the index cations applied in the present study, only one exchange step is required, providing a significant advantage over the AgTUcalcite method.

The dielectric behavior of kaolinite, montmorillonite, allophane, and imogolite samples adjusted to a water potential of 33 kPa was examined using a time-domain reflectometry method over a wide frequency range of 103-1010 Hz. A dielectric relaxation peak owing to bound H2O was observed. The observation of this peak required the precise determination of the contributions of dc conductivity. The peak is located at 10 MHz, indicating that the relaxation time of the bound H2O is approximately ten times longer than the relaxation time of bound H2O with organic polymers, such as an aqueous globular-protein solution. The structure of bound H2O differs between phyllosilicates and amorphous phases, based on differences in relaxation strength and the pattern of distribution of the relaxation times. The dielectric process involving rotation of bulk H2O molecules was also observed at 20 GHz. The relaxation strength of bulk H2O increased with an increase in the water content. The interfacial polarization in the diffuse double layer occurred only in montmorillonite and kaolinite, indicating that mechanisms involving the Maxwell-Wagner and surface-polarization effects cannot be extended to include allophane and imogolite. Although these results suggest that additional work is required, a tentative conclusion is that a tangential migration of counter-ions along clay surfaces may be important.

Synthetic hematites with Al substitutions between 0 and 18 mol % were synthesized at different temperatures and water activities. The cell-edge lengths a for different synthesis conditions decreased linearly with increasing Al substitution. The regression lines, however, had different slopes and intercepts: the series with the highest synthesis temperature (1270 K) had the most negative slope. With increasing Al substitution, the hematites contained increasing amounts of non-surface water. Significant correlations were found between these chemically determined water contents and the deviations of the unit-cell parameters a, c, and V relative to the corresponding 1270 K regression lines. To explain the measured X-ray peak intensities, structural OH had to be included into the theoretical calculations. From intensity ratios normalized to I113, it is possible to determine the structural OH separately from the Al substitution, which can be assessed by the shift of the cell-edge lengths relative to the 1270 K regression lines. The incorporation of Al and OH into the hematite structure induces strain, which was quantified by X-ray diffraction.

Cryosols from Maritime Antarctica have been less studied than soils from continental areas of Antarctica. In this work X-ray diffraction, difference X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetry, transmission electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy and selective chemical dissolution were used to characterize the clay fraction of basaltic, acid sulfate and ornithogenic Cryosols from ice-free areas of Admiralty Bay, King George Island. Non-crystalline phases are important soil components and reach >75% of the clay fraction for some ornithogenic soils. Randomly interstratified smectite-hydroxy-Al-interlayered smectite is the main clay mineral of basaltic soils. Kaolinite, chlorite and regularly interstratified illite-smectite predominate in acid sulfate soils. Jarosite is also an important component of the clay fraction in these soils. Crystalline Al and Fe phosphates occur in the clay at sites directly affected by penguin activity and the chemical characteristics of these ornithogenic sites are controlled by highly reactive, non-crystalline Al, Si, Fe and P phases. Chemical weathering is an active process in Cryosols in Maritime Antarctica and is enhanced by the presence of sulfides for some parent materials, and faunal activity.

In the presence of Mn(II), ferrihydrite transforms into Mn-goethite and/or jacobsite. Chemical analysis showed that as much as 15 mole % Mn replaced Fe in the goethite structure. If Mn(III) replaced Mn(II), the formation of jacobsite was suppressed; ferrihydrite transformed into Mn-goethite, and, at high Mn(III) concentrations, a 7-Å phyllomanganate. Low levels of Mn(II) retarded the transformation of ferrihydrite only slightly, whereas in an Mn(III) system the nucleation and growth of Mn-goethite were both hindered. Mn-goethite nucleated in solution, whereas jacobsite appeared to form by interaction of dissolved Mn(II) species with ferrihydrite. Mn suppressed the formation of hematite in these systems; however, Mn-hematite containing as much as 5 mole % Mn was induced to form at pH 8 by adding oxalate to the system. Transmission electron micrographs showed that goethite crystals grown in the presence of Mn were long (≤2 μm) and thin and commonly contained etch pits. The presence of Mn appears to have promoted twinning.

The binary exchange of cations on clays and soils is generally regarded as a thermodynamically reversible process. The literature on soil chemistry and geochemistry, however, abounds with reports on cation exchange reactions that appear to have only limited reversibility, i.e., that exhibit hysteresis. A satisfactory explanation of this phenomenon is still lacking, even though a number of mechanisms have been advocated, e.g., charge or site heterogeneity at the surface, differential hydration of cations, dehydration of the exchanger, crystalline swelling hysteresis, and inaccessibility of sites caused by domain or quasi-crystal formation. In the present article, the relevant literature is reviewed and analyzed critically. On the basis of available evidence, it is shown that exchangeable cations can be classified into three groups, defined in such a way that hysteresis has, in the literature, generally not been observed when exchange reactions involved cations belonging to the same group, but has often been found when the reactions involved cations from different groups. Furthermore, it is argued that none of the five mechanisms mentioned can, in and of itself, account fully for the observed exchange hysteresis. A conceptual model is proposed that combines elements of these five mechanisms and is able to describe, at least qualitatively, the effects of factors such as clay type, electrolyte concentration, and extent of dehydration.

Photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS), a dynamic light-scattering technique for particle size measurement, was used to determine the coagulation rates of aqueous dispersions of relatively monodisperse South Carolina Peerless kaolinite, Silver Hill, Montana, illite, Wyoming montmorillonite, and Florida palygorskite. This technique allows quantitative measurement of the rate of coagulation for clay particles where the traditional turbidity method gives only a qualitative measure. The critical coagulation concentrations for KCl at pH = 10.0 were: 0.199 M for kaolinite, 0.202 M for illite, 0.290 M for montmorillonite, and 0.034 M for palygorskite. The effective Hamaker constants, calculated using Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory, were: 3.1 × 10−20 J for kaolinite, 2.5 × 10−20 J for illite, 2.2 × 10−20 J for montmorillonite, and 1.63 × 10−19 J for palygorskite. Stern potentials at the critical coagulation concentration at pH 10.0 were: −42.7 mV for kaolinite, −40.7 mV for illite,‒21.2 mV for montmorillonite, and −66.9 mV for palygorskite.

Six standard polytypes of micas exist that have c-periodicities between 1 and 6 layers; these can be subdivided into groups A and B according to whether the octahedral cations are in the same set of positions in every layer or alternate regularly between I and II possible sets of positions (alternate slant directions), respectively. Correspondingly, 12 standard polytypes exist for 1:1 layers of the serpentine-type structures, which are divisible into four groups A-D. Groups A and B differ as in the micas, as do groups C and D. Groups A and B have ±a/3 interlayer shifts, whereas groups C and D have zero or ±b/3 interlayer shifts. Six structural types of semi-randomly or regularly stacked 1-layer chlorites exist that differ in the slant of the interlayer sheet (I or II) and its position (a or b) relative to 6-member rings in adjacent 2:1 layers.

Criteria have been established that permit the X-ray diffraction identification of the above-mentioned groups as well as the individual polytypes within each group. These criteria involve inspection of the strong X-ray diffraction reflections of index k = 3n for identification of the groups and of the generally weaker k ≠ 3n reflections for identification of the polytypes (assuming indexing on orthohexagonal axes throughout for convenience). In all hydrous phyllosilicates the octahedral cations and anions repeat at intervals of b/3 and thus contribute strongly to X-ray diffraction reflections of index k = 3n. The intensities of these reflections identify the two mica groups, the four serpentine-type groups, and the six chlorite groups. The periodicities of these reflections along Z* is that between identical octahedral sheets. The basal oxygen atoms do not repeat at intervals of b/3 and are a primary contributor to the intensities of k ≠ 3n reflections. The period along Z* for these reflections is that between identical basal oxygen planes, and the periodicity plus the symmetry identify the individual trioctahedral polytypes. For dioctahedral polytypes of the kaolin-group minerals and chlorites, the position of the vacant octahedral site must be considered also.

These general principles can be illustrated especially well by single-crystal precession photographs and extrapolated to powder photographs.

Samples containing allophane with molar Al/Si ratios from 1.0 to 2.0 have been examined by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, and phosphate adsorption methods. The infrared spectra of allophane with Al/Si ratios close to 2.0 showed that the wall of the allophane spherules is made up of imogolite structural units similar to “proto-imogolite.” X-ray fluorescence gave no clear evidence of Al in tetrahedral sites (AlIV), while pyridine adsorption results suggested that a small number of Bronsted acid sites (AlIVOH) are present in silica-rich allophanes. Lewis acid sites (AlH2O) are present in both silica-rich and alumina-rich allophanes. The results suggest that the framework for the allophane structure is an Al octahedral sheet.

Allophanes with Al/Si ratios close to 1.0 contain condensed silicate units either on the outside surface of the Al octahedral sheet, giving rise to a halloysite-like structure, or bonded on the inside surface of an imogolite-like structure. Allophanes with Al/Si ratios between 1.0 and 2.0 appear to be mixtures of the “proto-imogolite” structure and the allophane (Al/Si = 1.0) structure.

Ceramic clays are among the most complicated of ceramic systems because of the very intricate relationship between the behavior of minerals during ceramic processing and their modifications during heating. A major challenge is to predict the phase changes in clay ceramics. The aims of this study were to establish reference data of ceramic products that can be formed based on the mineralogical compositions of the local raw materials. These data, in turn, can be compared with archeological ceramics in order to study their origins.

The mineralogical compositions and modifications during firing (550–1100°C under oxidizing conditions) of seven clayey materials sampled from the main clay deposits of northern Morocco were evaluated by X-ray powder diffraction. Two groups of clays were distinguished according to the type of neoformed high-temperature minerals: non-calcareous clays and calcareous clays. For the non-calcareous raw materials, spinel was produced at 950°C. Cristobalite and mullite were formed at temperatures in excess of 1000°C from clays that contain illite, kaolinite, and chlorite. In clays containing vermiculite and large amounts of chlorite, hematite was formed at temperatures in excess of 950°C. Firing of calcareous clays at temperatures >950°C yielded Ca-silicates (diopside, gehlenite and wollastonite), spinel, cristobalite, hematite, and feldspars. Mullite may also form in the calcareous clay products when the carbonate content exceeds 10%.

Short- and long-term exposure to inorganic solutions can cause significant degradation of the hydraulic properties of bentonite clay used in geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs). In particular, the increase in hydraulic conductivity due to cation exchange when Na-montmorillonite is subjected to leachates rich in Ca and Mg has caused problems in incinerator ash landfill liners located in wet environments, where large quantities of leachates are generated. Experimental results are presented to evaluate the immediate change in hydraulic conductivity of seven types of GCL clays upon permeation with leachate generated from three ash landfills. The composition of the ash, which is a by-product of the incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW), in turn influences the composition of the resulting leachate. Falling head permeability tests were performed on flexible-wall permeameter specimens, with back-pressure saturation. Chemical analysis shows that the three leachate products contain high, medium, and low concentration Ca and Mg cations. The clay component of GCL materials tested in this study consists of regular and polymer-treated bentonite. Polymer treatment is believed to render the clay non-reactive to many organic and inorganic chemicals. The results of this study indicate that: (1) polymer treatment is generally more beneficial if the clay is first saturated with water and not directly with the leachate; (2) high swell potential of the bentonite is more advantageous than polymer treatment, especially when low hydraulic conductivity is required in the short term and if the clay is pre-hydrated. Experiment setup and special specimen preparation procedures are also discussed.

New pillared clay-based adsorbents have been prepared by incorporating a nonionic surfactant of general formula C12–14H25–29O(CH2CH2O)5H (commercial name, Tergitol 15S-5), during the synthesis of the aluminum hydroxide pillaring reagent. Different loadings of surfactant have been examined. The presence of the surfactant enhanced the adsorption capacity of the clay toward 3-monochlorophenol from aqueous solution. On the basis of adsorption results for a series of clays with increasing surfactant loadings, the best adsorbent was obtained at a surfactant loading of 255 mg/g of clay. At this loading, the surfactant occupies the micropores, as well as the mesopores and the external surfaces of the pillared clay. Analysis of the adsorption isotherms for 3-monochlorophenol, 3,5-dichlorophenol, 3,4,5-trichlorophenol and pentachlorophenol at different pH shows that the most energetic adsorption sites are the surfactant-occupied micropores between pillars. Additional binding of chlorinated phenols occurs at surfactant sites on external surfaces and mesopores. Upon calcination at 500°C, the clay is converted to a conventional alumina-pillared clay with a basal spacing near 16 Å. This calcined product can be reused as an adsorbent for chlorinated phenols by readsorbing fresh surfactant. The recycled adsorbent exhibits performance properties comparable to the original adsorbent. These results demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing a surfactant-modified pillared clay as a recyclable adsorbent and combustion catalyst for environmental pollutants.

The crystal structure of a synthetic boehmite sample has been refined to an R of 0.047 in the space group Amam from X-ray powder diffraction data. Inclusion of hydrogen atoms and/or refinement in the space group A21am gave poorer results. Cell dimensions were determined as a = 3.6936 (± 0.0003), b = 12.214 (± 0.001), c = 2.8679 (± 0.0003) Å. All Al-O(OH) distances lie between 1.88 and 1.91 Å. Shared octahedral edges are 2.51–2.52 Å, and unshared octahedral edges are 2.86–2.87 Å, in excellent agreement with those for layered silicates. The O-H … O distance between contiguous octahedral sheets is 2.71 Å. The computed X-ray pattern matches closely with the experimental pattern, indicating the degree to which the crystal structure has been determined.

A closed-form equation was derived that describes the powder-ring distribution factor as a function of 2θ, soller slit collimation, and σ*, which is defined as the standard deviation of an axially symmetrical Gaussian orientation function. Methods were developed for measuring σ* in the reflection mode by means of a θ/2θ diffractometer. Six experimental arrangements for a sedimentary chlorite showed widely different intensity ratios of the 001/005 reflections and gave a standard deviation of ±5.8% when corrected by the theory. The absolute integrated intensities of the 003 reflection from eleven illite samples provided an eight-fold maximum range which, when corrected, yielded a standard deviation of ±7.7%.

The intensity distributions within each of two X-ray powder diffraction patterns obtained from instruments with different soller-slit configurations could not be directly compared at low diffraction angles unless corrections, based on σ*, were introduced to allow for the differences in axial divergence.
