We use tools from free probability to study the spectra of Hermitian operators on infinite graphs. Special attention is devoted to universal covering trees of finite graphs. For operators on these graphs, we derive a new variational formula for the spectral radius and provide new proofs of results due to Sunada and Aomoto using free probability.

With the goal of extending the applicability of free probability techniques beyond universal covering trees, we introduce a new combinatorial product operation on graphs and show that, in the noncommutative probability context, it corresponds to the notion of freeness with amalgamation. We show that Cayley graphs of amalgamated free products of groups, as well as universal covering trees, can be constructed using our graph product.

We study generators of the fundamental group of the group of symplectomorphisms $\operatorname {\mathrm{Symp}} (\mathbb C\mathbb P^2\#\,5\overline { \mathbb C\mathbb P}\,\!^2, \omega )$ for some particular symplectic forms. It was observed by Kȩdra (2009, Archivum Mathematicum 45) that there are many symplectic 4-manifolds $(M, \omega )$, where M is neither rational nor ruled, that admit no circle action and $\pi _1 (\operatorname {\mathrm {Ham}} (M,\omega ))$ is nontrivial. On the other hand, it follows from Abreu and McDuff (2000, Journal of the American Mathematical Society 13, 971–1009), Anjos and Eden (2019, Michigan Mathematical Journal 68, 71–126), Anjos and Pinsonnault (2013, Mathematische Zeitschrift 275, 245–292), and Pinsonnault (2008, Compositio Mathematica 144, 787–810) that the fundamental group of the group $ \operatorname {\mathrm{Symp}}_h(\mathbb C\mathbb P^2\#\,k\overline { \mathbb C\mathbb P}\,\!^2,\omega )$, of symplectomorphisms that act trivially on homology, with $k \leq 4$, is generated by circle actions on the manifold. We show that, for some particular symplectic forms $\omega $, the set of all Hamiltonian circle actions generates a proper subgroup in $\pi _1(\operatorname {\mathrm{Symp}}_{h}(\mathbb C\mathbb P^2\#\,5\overline { \mathbb C\mathbb P}\,\!^2,\omega )).$ Our work depends on Delzant classification of toric symplectic manifolds, Karshon’s classification of Hamiltonian $S^1$-spaces, and the computation of Seidel elements of some circle actions.

Let R be a discrete valuation domain with field of fractions Q and maximal ideal generated by $\pi $ . Let $\Lambda $ be an R-order such that $Q\Lambda $ is a separable Q-algebra. Maranda showed that there exists $k\in \mathbb {N}$ such that for all $\Lambda $ -lattices L and M, if $L/L\pi ^k\simeq M/M\pi ^k$ , then $L\simeq M$ . Moreover, if R is complete and L is an indecomposable $\Lambda $ -lattice, then $L/L\pi ^k$ is also indecomposable. We extend Maranda’s theorem to the class of R-reduced R-torsion-free pure-injective $\Lambda $ -modules.

As an application of this extension, we show that if $\Lambda $ is an order over a Dedekind domain R with field of fractions Q such that $Q\Lambda $ is separable, then the lattice of open subsets of the R-torsion-free part of the right Ziegler spectrum of $\Lambda $ is isomorphic to the lattice of open subsets of the R-torsion-free part of the left Ziegler spectrum of $\Lambda $ .

Furthermore, with k as in Maranda’s theorem, we show that if M is R-torsion-free and $H(M)$ is the pure-injective hull of M, then $H(M)/H(M)\pi ^k$ is the pure-injective hull of $M/M\pi ^k$ . We use this result to give a characterization of R-torsion-free pure-injective $\Lambda $ -modules and describe the pure-injective hulls of certain R-torsion-free $\Lambda $ -modules.

Let G be a locally compact unimodular group, and let $\phi $ be some function of n variables on G. To such a $\phi $, one can associate a multilinear Fourier multiplier, which acts on some n-fold product of the noncommutative $L_p$-spaces of the group von Neumann algebra. One may also define an associated Schur multiplier, which acts on an n-fold product of Schatten classes $S_p(L_2(G))$. We generalize well-known transference results from the linear case to the multilinear case. In particular, we show that the so-called “multiplicatively bounded $(p_1,\ldots ,p_n)$-norm” of a multilinear Schur multiplier is bounded above by the corresponding multiplicatively bounded norm of the Fourier multiplier, with equality whenever the group is amenable. Furthermore, we prove that the bilinear Hilbert transform is not bounded as a vector-valued map $L_{p_1}(\mathbb {R}, S_{p_1}) \times L_{p_2}(\mathbb {R}, S_{p_2}) \rightarrow L_{1}(\mathbb {R}, S_{1})$, whenever $p_1$ and $p_2$ are such that $\frac {1}{p_1} + \frac {1}{p_2} = 1$. A similar result holds for certain Calderón–Zygmund-type operators. This is in contrast to the nonvector-valued Euclidean case.

The classical Loewner’s theorem states that operator monotone functions on real intervals are described by holomorphic functions on the upper half-plane. We characterize local order isomorphisms on operator domains by biholomorphic automorphisms of the generalized upper half-plane, which is the collection of all operators with positive invertible imaginary part. We describe such maps in an explicit manner, and examine properties of maximal local order isomorphisms. Moreover, in the finite-dimensional case, we prove that every order embedding of a matrix domain is a homeomorphic order isomorphism onto another matrix domain.

The classical Gelfand–Naimark theorems provide important insight into the structure of general and of commutative $C^*$-algebras. It is shown that these can be generalized to certain ordered $^*$-algebras. More precisely, for $\sigma $-bounded closed ordered $^*$-algebras, a faithful representation as operators is constructed. Similarly, for commutative such algebras, a faithful representation as complex-valued functions is constructed if an additional necessary regularity condition is fulfilled. These results generalize the Gelfand–Naimark representation theorems to classes of $^*$-algebras larger than $C^*$-algebras, and which especially contain $^*$-algebras of unbounded operators. The key to these representation theorems is a new result for Archimedean ordered vector spaces V: If V is $\sigma $-bounded, then the order of V is induced by the extremal positive linear functionals on V.

We give a formula for the cohomological invariants of a root stack, which we apply to compute the cohomological invariants and the Brauer group of the compactification of the stacks of hyperelliptic curves given by admissible double coverings.

First, we build a computational procedure to reconstruct the convex body from a pre-given surface area measure. Nontrivially, we prove the convergence of this procedure. Then, the sufficient and necessary conditions of a Sobolev binary function to be a lightness function of a convex body are investigated. Finally, we present a computational procedure to compute the curvature function from a pre-given lightness function, and then we reconstruct the convex body from this curvature function by using the first procedure. The convergence is also proved. The main computations in both procedures are simply about the spherical harmonics.

A semigroup S is said to be right pseudo-finite if the universal right congruence can be generated by a finite set $U\subseteq S\times S$, and there is a bound on the length of derivations for an arbitrary pair $(s,t)\in S\times S$ as a consequence of those in U. This article explores the existence and nature of a minimal ideal in a right pseudo-finite semigroup. Continuing the theme started in an earlier work by Dandan et al., we show that in several natural classes of monoids, right pseudo-finiteness implies the existence of a completely simple minimal ideal. This is the case for orthodox monoids, completely regular monoids, and right reversible monoids, which include all commutative monoids. We also show that certain other conditions imply the existence of a minimal ideal, which need not be completely simple; notably, this is the case for semigroups in which one of the Green’s preorders ${\leq _{\mathcal {L}}}$ or ${\leq _{\mathcal {J}}}$ is left compatible with multiplication. Finally, we establish a number of examples of pseudo-finite monoids without a minimal ideal. We develop an explicit construction that yields such examples with additional desired properties, for instance, regularity or ${\mathcal {J}}$-triviality.

Although there is no natural internal product for hermitian forms over an algebra with involution of the first kind, we describe how to multiply two $\varepsilon $ -hermitian forms to obtain a quadratic form over the base field. This allows to define a commutative graded ring structure by taking together bilinear forms and $\varepsilon $ -hermitian forms, which we call the mixed Witt ring of an algebra with involution. We also describe a less powerful version of this construction for unitary involutions, which still defines a ring, but with a grading over $\mathbb {Z}$ instead of the Klein group.

We first describe a general framework for defining graded rings out of monoidal functors from monoidal categories with strong symmetry properties to categories of modules. We then give a description of such a strongly symmetric category $\mathbf {Br}_h(K,\iota )$ which encodes the usual hermitian Morita theory of algebras with involutions over a field K.

We can therefore apply the general framework to $\mathbf {Br}_h(K,\iota )$ and the Witt group functors to define our mixed Witt rings, and derive their basic properties, including explicit formulas for products of diagonal forms in terms of involution trace forms, explicit computations for the case of quaternion algebras, and reciprocity formulas relative to scalar extensions.

We intend to describe in future articles further properties of those rings, such as a $\lambda $ -ring structure, and relations with the Milnor conjecture and the theory of signatures of hermitian forms.

Let K be a number field. For which primes p does there exist an elliptic curve $E / K$ admitting a K-rational p-isogeny? Although we have an answer to this question over the rationals, extending this to other number fields is a fundamental open problem in number theory. In this paper, we study this question in the case that K is a quadratic field, subject to the assumption that E is semistable at the primes of K above p. We prove results both for families of quadratic fields and for specific quadratic fields.

Let $\mathcal {N}$ be the Nevanlinna class, and let B be a Blaschke product. It is shown that the natural invertibility criterion in the quotient algebra $\mathcal {N} / B \mathcal {N}$ , that is, $|f| \ge e^{-H} $ on the set $B^{-1}\{0\}$ for some positive harmonic function H, holds if and only if the function $- \log |B|$ has a harmonic majorant on the set $\{z\in \mathbb {D}:\rho (z,\Lambda )\geq e^{-H(z)}\}$ , at least for large enough functions H. We also study the corresponding class of positive harmonic functions H on the unit disc such that the latter condition holds. We also discuss the analogous invertibility problem in quotients of the Smirnov class.

An explicit formula forthe mean value of $\vert L(1,\chi )\vert ^2$ is known, where $\chi $ runs over all odd primitive Dirichlet characters of prime conductors p. Bounds on the relative class number of the cyclotomic field ${\mathbb Q}(\zeta _p)$ follow. Lately, the authors obtained that the mean value of $\vert L(1,\chi )\vert ^2$ is asymptotic to $\pi ^2/6$, where $\chi $ runs over all odd primitive Dirichlet characters of prime conductors $p\equiv 1\ \ \pmod {2d}$ which are trivial on a subgroup H of odd order d of the multiplicative group $({\mathbb Z}/p{\mathbb Z})^*$, provided that $d\ll \frac {\log p}{\log \log p}$. Bounds on the relative class number of the subfield of degree $\frac {p-1}{2d}$ of the cyclotomic field ${\mathbb Q}(\zeta _p)$ follow. Here, for a given integer $d_0>1$, we consider the same questions for the nonprimitive odd Dirichlet characters $\chi '$ modulo $d_0p$ induced by the odd primitive characters $\chi $ modulo p. We obtain new estimates for Dedekind sums and deduce that the mean value of $\vert L(1,\chi ')\vert ^2$ is asymptotic to $\frac {\pi ^2}{6}\prod _{q\mid d_0}\left (1-\frac {1}{q^2}\right )$, where $\chi $ runs over all odd primitive Dirichlet characters of prime conductors p which are trivial on a subgroup H of odd order $d\ll \frac {\log p}{\log \log p}$. As a consequence, we improve the previous bounds on the relative class number of the subfield of degree $\frac {p-1}{2d}$ of the cyclotomic field ${\mathbb Q}(\zeta _p)$. Moreover, we give a method to obtain explicit formulas and use Mersenne primes to show that our restriction on d is essentially sharp.

In this paper, we prove results about solutions of the Diophantine equation $x^p+y^p=z^3$ over various number fields using the modular method. First, by assuming some standard modularity conjecture, we prove an asymptotic result for general number fields of narrow class number one satisfying some technical conditions. Second, we show that there is an explicit bound such that the equation $x^p+y^p=z^3$ does not have a particular type of solution over $K=\mathbb {Q}(\sqrt {-d})$, where $d=1,7,19,43,67$ whenever p is bigger than this bound. During the course of the proof, we prove various results about the irreducibility of Galois representations, image of inertia groups, and Bianchi newforms.

We study the number of ways of factoring elements in the complex reflection groups $G(r,s,n)$ as products of reflections. We prove a result that compares factorization numbers in $G(r,s,n)$ to those in the symmetric group $S_n$ , and we use this comparison, along with the Ekedahl, Lando, Shapiro, and Vainshtein (ELSV) formula, to deduce a polynomial structure for factorizations in $G(r,s,n)$ .

We compute the generator rank of a subhomogeneous $C^*\!$-algebra in terms of the covering dimension of the pieces of its primitive ideal space corresponding to irreducible representations of a fixed dimension. We deduce that every $\mathcal {Z}$-stable approximately subhomogeneous algebra has generator rank one, which means that a generic element in such an algebra is a generator.

This leads to a strong solution of the generator problem for classifiable, simple, nuclear $C^*\!$-algebras: a generic element in each such algebra is a generator. Examples of Villadsen show that this is not the case for all separable, simple, nuclear $C^*\!$-algebras.

This paper studies a class of singular fibrations, called self-crossing boundary fibrations, which play an important role in semitoric and generalized complex geometry. These singular fibrations can be conveniently described using the language of Lie algebroids. We will show how these fibrations arise from (nonfree) torus actions, and how to use them to construct and better understand self-crossing stable generalized complex four-manifolds. We moreover show that these fibrations are compatible with taking connected sums, and use this to prove a singularity trade result between two types of singularities occurring in these types of fibrations (a so-called nodal trade).

We develop the theory of left-invariant generalized pseudo-Riemannian metrics on Lie groups. Such a metric accompanied by a choice of left-invariant divergence operator gives rise to a Ricci curvature tensor, and we study the corresponding Einstein equation. We compute the Ricci tensor in terms of the tensors (on the sum of the Lie algebra and its dual) encoding the Courant algebroid structure, the generalized metric, and the divergence operator. The resulting expression is polynomial and homogeneous of degree 2 in the coefficients of the Dorfman bracket and the divergence operator with respect to a left-invariant orthonormal basis for the generalized metric. We determine all generalized Einstein metrics on three-dimensional Lie groups.

Let F be a totally real field, and let $E/F$ be a CM quadratic extension. We construct a p-adic L-function attached to Hida families for the group $\mathrm {GL}_{2/F}\times \mathrm {Res}_{E/F}\mathrm {GL}_{1}$ . It is characterized by an exact interpolation property for critical Rankin–Selberg L-values, at classical points corresponding to representations $\pi \boxtimes \chi $ with the weights of $\chi $ smaller than the weights of $\pi $ .

Our p-adic L-function agrees with previous results of Hida when $E/F$ splits above p or $F=\mathbf {Q}$ , and it is new otherwise. Exploring a method that should bear further fruits, we build it as a ratio of families of global and local Waldspurger zeta integrals, the latter constructed using the local Langlands correspondence in families.

In an appendix of possibly independent recreational interest, we give a reality-TV-inspired proof of an identity concerning double factorials.
