We study the analogue of the Bombieri–Vinogradov theorem for $\operatorname{SL}_{m}(\mathbb{Z})$ Hecke–Maass form $F(z)$. In particular, for $\operatorname{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ holomorphic or Maass Hecke eigenforms, symmetric-square lifts of holomorphic Hecke eigenforms on $\operatorname{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$, and $\operatorname{SL}_{3}(\mathbb{Z})$ Maass Hecke eigenforms under the Ramanujan conjecture, the levels of distribution are all equal to $1/2,$ which is as strong as the Bombieri–Vinogradov theorem. As an application, we study an automorphic version of Titchmarch’s divisor problem; namely for $a\neq 0,$

A well-known conjecture is that all finitely presented groups have semistable fundamental groups at infinity. A class of groups whose members have not been shown to be semistable at infinity is the class ${\mathcal{A}}$ of finitely presented groups that are ascending HNN-extensions with finitely generated base. The class ${\mathcal{A}}$ naturally partitions into two non-empty subclasses, those that have “bounded” and “unbounded” depth. Using new methods introduced in a companion paper we show those of bounded depth have semistable fundamental group at infinity. Ascending HNN extensions produced by Ol’shanskii–Sapir and Grigorchuk (for other reasons), and once considered potential non-semistable examples are shown to have bounded depth. Finally, we devise a technique for producing explicit examples with unbounded depth. These examples are perhaps the best candidates to date in the search for a group with non-semistable fundamental group at infinity.

Let $p$ be a prime and let $G$ be a finite group. By a celebrated theorem of Swan, two finitely generated projective $\mathbb{Z}_{p}[G]$-modules $P$ and $P^{\prime }$ are isomorphic if and only if $\mathbb{Q}_{p}\otimes _{\mathbb{Z}_{p}}P$ and $\mathbb{Q}_{p}\otimes _{\mathbb{Z}_{p}}P^{\prime }$ are isomorphic as $\mathbb{Q}_{p}[G]$-modules. We prove an Iwasawa-theoretic analogue of this result and apply this to the Iwasawa theory of local and global fields. We thereby determine the structure of natural Iwasawa modules up to (pseudo-)isomorphism.

An intrinsic quadric is a normal projective variety with a Cox ring defined by a single quadratic relation. We provide explicit descriptions of these varieties in the smooth case for small Picard numbers. As applications, we figure out in this setting the Fano examples and (affirmatively) test Fujita’s freeness conjecture.

For $A$ a gentle algebra, and $X$ and $Y$ string modules, we construct a combinatorial basis for $\operatorname{Hom}(X,\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}Y)$. We use this to describe support $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}$-tilting modules for $A$. We give a combinatorial realization of maps in both directions realizing the bijection between support $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}$-tilting modules and functorially finite torsion classes. We give an explicit basis of $\operatorname{Ext}^{1}(Y,X)$ as short exact sequences. We analyze several constructions given in a more restricted, combinatorial setting by McConville, showing that many but not all of them can be extended to general gentle algebras.

In this article we explore the interplay between two generalizations of the Whittaker model, namely the Klyachko models and the degenerate Whittaker models, and two functorial constructions, namely base change and automorphic induction, for the class of unitarizable and ladder representations of the general linear groups.

The Peter–Weyl idempotent $e_{\mathscr{P}}$ of a parahoric subgroup $\mathscr{P}$ is the sum of the idempotents of irreducible representations of $\mathscr{P}$ that have a nonzero Iwahori fixed vector. The convolution algebra associated with $e_{\mathscr{P}}$ is called a Peter–Weyl Iwahori algebra. We show that any Peter–Weyl Iwahori algebra is Morita equivalent to the Iwahori–Hecke algebra. Both the Iwahori–Hecke algebra and a Peter–Weyl Iwahori algebra have a natural conjugate linear anti-involution $\star$, and the Morita equivalence preserves irreducible hermitian and unitary modules. Both algebras have another anti-involution, denoted by $\bullet$, and the Morita equivalence preserves irreducible and unitary modules for $\bullet$.

In this paper we prove some one-level density results for the low-lying zeros of families of quadratic and quartic Hecke $L$-functions of the Gaussian field. As corollaries, we deduce that at least 94.27% and 5%, respectively, of the members of the quadratic family and the quartic family do not vanish at the central point.

We describe poles and the corresponding residual automorphic representations of Eisenstein series attached to maximal parabolic subgroups whose unipotent radicals admit Jordan algebra structure.

This paper is concerned with the maximisation of the $k$-th eigenvalue of the Laplacian amongst flat tori of unit volume in dimension $d$ as $k$ goes to infinity. We show that in any dimension maximisers exist for any given $k$, but that any sequence of maximisers degenerates as $k$ goes to infinity when the dimension is at most 10. Furthermore, we obtain specific upper and lower bounds for the injectivity radius of any sequence of maximisers. We also prove that flat Klein bottles maximising the $k$-th eigenvalue of the Laplacian exhibit the same behaviour. These results contrast with those obtained recently by Gittins and Larson, stating that sequences of optimal cuboids for either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions converge to the cube no matter the dimension. We obtain these results via Weyl asymptotics with explicit control of the remainder in terms of the injectivity radius. We reduce the problem at hand to counting lattice points inside anisotropically expanding domains, where we generalise methods of Yu. Kordyukov and A. Yakovlev by considering domains that expand at different rates in various directions.

Using Roelcke’s formula for the Green function, we explicitly construct a basis in the kernel of the adjoint Laplacian on a compact polyhedral surface $X$ and compute the $S$-matrix of $X$ at the zero value of the spectral parameter. We apply these results to study various self-adjoint extensions of a symmetric Laplacian on a compact polyhedral surface of genus two with a single conical point. It turns out that the behaviour of the $S$-matrix at the zero value of the spectral parameter is sensitive to the geometry of the polyhedron.

We study a Morita-equivalent version of the Zariski cancellation problem.

This paper provides a functional analogue of the recently initiated dual Orlicz–Brunn–Minkowski theory for star bodies. We first propose the Orlicz addition of measures, and establish the dual functional Orlicz–Brunn–Minkowski inequality. Based on a family of linear Orlicz additions of two measures, we provide an interpretation for the famous $f$-divergence. Jensen’s inequality for integrals is also proved to be equivalent to the newly established dual functional Orlicz–Brunn–Minkowski inequality. An optimization problem for the $f$-divergence is proposed, and related functional affine isoperimetric inequalities are established.

A subset ${\mathcal{X}}$ of a C*-algebra ${\mathcal{A}}$ is called irredundant if no $A\in {\mathcal{X}}$ belongs to the C*-subalgebra of ${\mathcal{A}}$ generated by ${\mathcal{X}}\setminus \{A\}$. Separable C*-algebras cannot have uncountable irredundant sets and all members of many classes of nonseparable C*-algebras, e.g., infinite dimensional von Neumann algebras have irredundant sets of cardinality continuum.

There exists a considerable literature showing that the question whether every AF commutative nonseparable C*-algebra has an uncountable irredundant set is sensitive to additional set-theoretic axioms, and we investigate here the noncommutative case.

Assuming $\diamondsuit$ (an additional axiom stronger than the continuum hypothesis), we prove that there is an AF C*-subalgebra of ${\mathcal{B}}(\ell _{2})$ of density $2^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}=\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}_{1}$ with no nonseparable commutative C*-subalgebra and with no uncountable irredundant set. On the other hand we also prove that it is consistent that every discrete collection of operators in ${\mathcal{B}}(\ell _{2})$ of cardinality continuum contains an irredundant subcollection of cardinality continuum.

Other partial results and more open problems are presented.

Kaplansky introduced the notions of CCR and GCR $C^{\ast }$-algebras, because they have a tractable representation theory. Many years later, he introduced the notions of CCR and GCR rings. In this paper we characterize when the algebra of an ample groupoid over a field is CCR and GCR. The results turn out to be exact analogues of the corresponding characterization of locally compact groupoids with CCR and GCR $C^{\ast }$-algebras. As a consequence, we classify the CCR and GCR Leavitt path algebras.

For a centre-by-metabelian pro-$p$ group $G$ of type $\text{FP}_{2m}$, for some $m\geqslant 1$, we show that $\sup _{M\in {\mathcal{A}}}$ rk $H_{i}(M,\mathbb{Z}_{p})<\infty$, for all $0\leqslant i\leqslant m$, where ${\mathcal{A}}$ is the set of all subgroups of $p$-power index in $G$ and, for a finitely generated abelian pro-$p$ group $V$, rk $V=\dim V\otimes _{\mathbb{Z}_{p}}\mathbb{Q}_{p}$.

Archdeacon and Grable (1995) proved that the genus of the random graph $G\in {\mathcal{G}}_{n,p}$ is almost surely close to $pn^{2}/12$ if $p=p(n)\geqslant 3(\ln n)^{2}n^{-1/2}$. In this paper we prove an analogous result for random bipartite graphs in ${\mathcal{G}}_{n_{1},n_{2},p}$. If $n_{1}\geqslant n_{2}\gg 1$, phase transitions occur for every positive integer $i$ when $p=\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E9}((n_{1}n_{2})^{-i/(2i+1)})$. A different behaviour is exhibited when one of the bipartite parts has constant size, i.e., $n_{1}\gg 1$ and $n_{2}$ is a constant. In that case, phase transitions occur when $p=\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E9}(n_{1}^{-1/2})$ and when $p=\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E9}(n_{1}^{-1/3})$.

We prove results concerning the multiplicity as well as the Cohen–Macaulay and Gorenstein properties of the special fiber ring $\mathscr{F}(E)$ of a finitely generated $R$-module $E\subsetneq R^{e}$ over a Noetherian local ring $R$ with infinite residue field. Assuming that $R$ is Cohen–Macaulay of dimension 1 and that $E$ has finite colength in $R^{e}$, our main result establishes an asymptotic length formula for the multiplicity of $\mathscr{F}(E)$, which, in addition to being of independent interest, allows us to derive a Cohen–Macaulayness criterion and to detect a curious relation to the Buchsbaum–Rim multiplicity of $E$ in this setting. Further, we provide a Gorensteinness characterization for $\mathscr{F}(E)$ in the more general situation where $R$ is Cohen–Macaulay of arbitrary dimension and $E$ is not necessarily of finite colength, and we notice a constraint in terms of the second analytic deviation of the module $E$ if its reduction number is at least three.

We give a bound on the primes dividing the denominators of invariants of Picard curves of genus 3 with complex multiplication. Unlike earlier bounds in genus 2 and 3, our bound is based, not on bad reduction of curves, but on a very explicit type of good reduction. This approach simultaneously yields a simplification of the proof and much sharper bounds. In fact, unlike all previous bounds for genus 3, our bound is sharp enough for use in explicit constructions of Picard curves.

Let $H$ be a Hopf algebra. We consider $H$-equivariant modules over a Hopf module category ${\mathcal{C}}$ as modules over the smash extension ${\mathcal{C}}\#H$. We construct Grothendieck spectral sequences for the cohomologies as well as the $H$-locally finite cohomologies of these objects. We also introduce relative $({\mathcal{D}},H)$-Hopf modules over a Hopf comodule category ${\mathcal{D}}$. These generalize relative $(A,H)$-Hopf modules over an $H$-comodule algebra $A$. We construct Grothendieck spectral sequences for their cohomologies by using their rational $\text{Hom}$ objects and higher derived functors of coinvariants.
