We present a new approach to graph limit theory that unifies and generalizes the two most well-developed directions, namely dense graph limits (even the more general $L^p$ limits) and Benjamini–Schramm limits (even in the stronger local-global setting). We illustrate by examples that this new framework provides a rich limit theory with natural limit objects for graphs of intermediate density. Moreover, it provides a limit theory for bounded operators (called P-operators) of the form $L^\infty (\Omega )\to L^1(\Omega )$ for probability spaces $\Omega $ . We introduce a metric to compare P-operators (for example, finite matrices) even if they act on different spaces. We prove a compactness result, which implies that, in appropriate norms, limits of uniformly bounded P-operators can again be represented by P-operators. We show that limits of operators, representing graphs, are self-adjoint, positivity-preserving P-operators called graphops. Graphons, $L^p$ graphons, and graphings (known from graph limit theory) are special examples of graphops. We describe a new point of view on random matrix theory using our operator limit framework.

Wick polynomials and Wick products are studied in the context of noncommutative probability theory. It is shown that free, Boolean, and conditionally free Wick polynomials can be defined and related through the action of the group of characters over a particular Hopf algebra. These results generalize our previous developments of a Hopf-algebraic approach to cumulants and Wick products in classical probability theory.

Given a compact Kähler manifold X, it is shown that pairs of the form $(E,\, D)$ , where E is a trivial holomorphic vector bundle on X, and D is an integrable holomorphic connection on E, produce a neutral Tannakian category. The corresponding pro-algebraic affine group scheme is studied. In particular, it is shown that this pro-algebraic affine group scheme for a compact Riemann surface determines uniquely the isomorphism class of the Riemann surface.

For a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra $\mathsf {A}$ , the McKay matrix $\mathsf {M}_{\mathsf {V}}$ of an $\mathsf {A}$ -module $\mathsf {V}$ encodes the relations for tensoring the simple $\mathsf {A}$ -modules with $\mathsf {V}$ . We prove results about the eigenvalues and the right and left (generalized) eigenvectors of $\mathsf {M}_{\mathsf {V}}$ by relating them to characters. We show how the projective McKay matrix $\mathsf {Q}_{\mathsf {V}}$ obtained by tensoring the projective indecomposable modules of $\mathsf {A}$ with $\mathsf {V}$ is related to the McKay matrix of the dual module of $\mathsf {V}$ . We illustrate these results for the Drinfeld double $\mathsf {D}_n$ of the Taft algebra by deriving expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of $\mathsf {M}_{\mathsf {V}}$ and $\mathsf {Q}_{\mathsf {V}}$ in terms of several kinds of Chebyshev polynomials. For the matrix $\mathsf {N}_{\mathsf {V}}$ that encodes the fusion rules for tensoring $\mathsf {V}$ with a basis of projective indecomposable $\mathsf {D}_n$ -modules for the image of the Cartan map, we show that the eigenvalues and eigenvectors also have such Chebyshev expressions.

In this paper, we analyze Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms on a finite cover G of an adelic split simply-laced group. Let $\pi $ be a minimal or next-to-minimal automorphic representation of G. We prove that any $\eta \in \pi $ is completely determined by its Whittaker coefficients with respect to (possibly degenerate) characters of the unipotent radical of a fixed Borel subgroup, analogously to the Piatetski-Shapiro–Shalika formula for cusp forms on $\operatorname {GL}_n$ . We also derive explicit formulas expressing the form, as well as all its maximal parabolic Fourier coefficient, in terms of these Whittaker coefficients. A consequence of our results is the nonexistence of cusp forms in the minimal and next-to-minimal automorphic spectrum. We provide detailed examples for G of type $D_5$ and $E_8$ with a view toward applications to scattering amplitudes in string theory.

Let $K/F$ be an unramified quadratic extension of a non-Archimedean local field. In a previous work [1], we proved a formula for the intersection number on Lubin–Tate spaces. The main result of this article is an algorithm for computation of this formula in certain special cases. As an application, we prove the linear Arithmetic Fundamental Lemma for $ \operatorname {{\mathrm {GL}}}_4$ with the unit element in the spherical Hecke Algebra.

We give a formulation of a deformation of Dirac operator along orbits of a group action on a possibly noncompact manifold to get an equivariant index and a K-homology cycle representing the index. We apply this framework to noncompact Hamiltonian torus manifolds to define geometric quantization from the viewpoint of index theory. We give two applications. The first one is a proof of a [Q,R]=0 type theorem, which can be regarded as a proof of the Vergne conjecture for abelian case. The other is a Danilov-type formula for toric case in the noncompact setting, which is a localization phenomenon of geometric quantization in the noncompact setting. The proofs are based on the localization of index to lattice points.

We obtain sharp ranges of $L^p$ -boundedness for domains in a wide class of Reinhardt domains representable as sublevel sets of monomials, by expressing them as quotients of simpler domains. We prove a general transformation law relating $L^p$ -boundedness on a domain and its quotient by a finite group. The range of p for which the Bergman projection is $L^p$ -bounded on our class of Reinhardt domains is found to shrink as the complexity of the domain increases .

For fixed $\alpha \in [0,1]$ , consider the set $S_{\alpha ,N}$ of dilated squares $\alpha , 4\alpha , 9\alpha , \dots , N^2\alpha \, $ modulo $1$ . Rudnick and Sarnak conjectured that, for Lebesgue, almost all such $\alpha $ the gap-distribution of $S_{\alpha ,N}$ is consistent with the Poisson model (in the limit as N tends to infinity). In this paper, we prove a new estimate for the triple correlations associated with this problem, establishing an asymptotic expression for the third moment of the number of elements of $S_{\alpha ,N}$ in a random interval of length $L/N$ , provided that $L> N^{1/4+\varepsilon }$ . The threshold of $\tfrac {1}{4}$ is substantially smaller than the threshold of $\tfrac {1}{2}$ (which is the threshold that would be given by a naïve discrepancy estimate).

Unlike the theory of pair correlations, rather little is known about triple correlations of the dilations $(\alpha a_n \, \text {mod } 1)_{n=1}^{\infty } $ for a nonlacunary sequence $(a_n)_{n=1}^{\infty } $ of increasing integers. This is partially due to the fact that the second moment of the triple correlation function is difficult to control, and thus standard techniques involving variance bounds are not applicable. We circumvent this impasse by using an argument inspired by works of Rudnick, Sarnak, and Zaharescu, and Heath-Brown, which connects the triple correlation function to some modular counting problems.

In Appendix B, we comment on the relationship between discrepancy and correlation functions, answering a question of Steinerberger.

We prove the following real interpolation identity: if $0<p <\infty $ and $0<\theta <1$ , then for $1/r=(1-\theta )/p$ ,

These extend previously known results from $p\geq 1$ to the full range $0<p<\infty $ . Other related spaces such as spaces of adapted sequences and Junge’s noncommutative conditioned $L_p$ -spaces are also shown to form interpolation scale for the full range $0<p<\infty $ when either the real method or the complex method is used. Our method of proof is based on a new algebraic atomic decomposition for Orlicz space version of Junge’s noncommutative conditioned $L_p$ -spaces.

We apply these results to derive various inequalities for martingales in noncommutative symmetric quasi-Banach spaces.

Let $\mathcal {N}(b)$ be the set of real numbers that are normal to base b. A well-known result of Ki and Linton [19] is that $\mathcal {N}(b)$ is $\boldsymbol {\Pi }^0_3$ -complete. We show that the set ${\mathcal {N}}^\perp (b)$ of reals, which preserve $\mathcal {N}(b)$ under addition, is also $\boldsymbol {\Pi }^0_3$ -complete. We use the characterization of ${\mathcal {N}}^\perp (b),$ given by Rauzy, in terms of an entropy-like quantity called the noise. It follows from our results that no further characterization theorems could result in a still better bound on the complexity of ${\mathcal {N}}^\perp (b)$ . We compute the exact descriptive complexity of other naturally occurring sets associated with noise. One of these is complete at the $\boldsymbol {\Pi }^0_4$ level. Finally, we get upper and lower bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets associated with the noise.

Let $\Sigma $ be a compact surface with boundary. For a given conformal class c on $\Sigma $ the functional $\sigma _k^*(\Sigma ,c)$ is defined as the supremum of the kth normalized Steklov eigenvalue over all metrics in c. We consider the behavior of this functional on the moduli space of conformal classes on $\Sigma $ . A precise formula for the limit of $\sigma _k^*(\Sigma ,c_n)$ when the sequence $\{c_n\}$ degenerates is obtained. We apply this formula to the study of natural analogs of the Friedlander–Nadirashvili invariants of closed manifolds defined as $\inf _{c}\sigma _k^*(\Sigma ,c)$ , where the infimum is taken over all conformal classes c on $\Sigma $ . We show that these quantities are equal to $2\pi k$ for any surface with boundary. As an application of our techniques we obtain new estimates on the kth normalized Steklov eigenvalue of a nonorientable surface in terms of its genus and the number of boundary components.

We determine the distance (up to a multiplicative constant) in the Zygmund class $\Lambda _{\ast }(\mathbb {R}^n)$ to the subspace $\mathrm {J}_{}(\mathbf {bmo})(\mathbb {R}^n).$ The latter space is the image under the Bessel potential $J := (1-\Delta )^{{-1}/2}$ of the space $\mathbf {bmo}(\mathbb {R}^n)$ , which is a nonhomogeneous version of the classical $\mathrm {BMO}$ . Locally, $\mathrm {J}_{}(\mathbf {bmo})(\mathbb {R}^n)$ consists of functions that together with their first derivatives are in $\mathbf {bmo}(\mathbb {R}^n)$ . More generally, we consider the same question when the Zygmund class is replaced by the Hölder space $\Lambda _{s}(\mathbb {R}^n),$ with $0 < s \leq 1$ , and the corresponding subspace is $\mathrm {J}_{s}(\mathbf {bmo})(\mathbb {R}^n)$ , the image under $(1-\Delta )^{{-s}/2}$ of $\mathbf {bmo}(\mathbb {R}^n).$ One should note here that $\Lambda _{1}(\mathbb {R}^n) = \Lambda _{\ast }(\mathbb {R}^n).$ Such results were known earlier only for $n = s = 1$ with a proof that does not extend to the general case.

Our results are expressed in terms of second differences. As a by-product of our wavelet-based proof, we also obtain the distance from $f \in \Lambda _{s}(\mathbb {R}^n)$ to $\mathrm {J}_{s}(\mathbf {bmo})(\mathbb {R}^n)$ in terms of the wavelet coefficients of $f.$ We additionally establish a third way to express this distance in terms of the size of the hyperbolic gradient of the harmonic extension of f on the upper half-space $\mathbb {R}^{n +1}_+$ .

What is the maximum number of copies of a fixed forest T in an n-vertex graph in a graph class $\mathcal {G}$ as $n\to \infty $ ? We answer this question for a variety of sparse graph classes $\mathcal {G}$ . In particular, we show that the answer is $\Theta (n^{\alpha _{d}(T)})$ where $\alpha _{d}(T)$ is the size of the largest stable set in the subforest of T induced by the vertices of degree at most d, for some integer d that depends on $\mathcal {G}$ . For example, when $\mathcal {G}$ is the class of k-degenerate graphs then $d=k$ ; when $\mathcal {G}$ is the class of graphs containing no $K_{s,t}$ -minor ( $t\geqslant s$ ) then $d=s-1$ ; and when $\mathcal {G}$ is the class of k-planar graphs then $d=2$ . All these results are in fact consequences of a single lemma in terms of a finite set of excluded subgraphs.

We discuss the notion of optimal polynomial approximants in multivariable reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. In particular, we analyze difficulties that arise in the multivariable case which are not present in one variable, for example, a more complicated relationship between optimal approximants and orthogonal polynomials in weighted spaces. Weakly inner functions, whose optimal approximants are all constant, provide extreme cases where nontrivial orthogonal polynomials cannot be recovered from the optimal approximants. Concrete examples are presented to illustrate the general theory and are used to disprove certain natural conjectures regarding zeros of optimal approximants in several variables.

We show that in a parametric family of linear recurrence sequences $a_1(\alpha ) f_1(\alpha )^n + \cdots + a_k(\alpha ) f_k(\alpha )^n$ with the coefficients $a_i$ and characteristic roots $f_i$ , $i=1, \ldots ,k$ , given by rational functions over some number field, for all but a set of elements $\alpha $ of bounded height in the algebraic closure of ${\mathbb Q}$ , the Skolem problem is solvable, and the existence of a zero in such a sequence can be effectively decided. We also discuss several related questions.

Associated with every $2n\times 2n$ real positive definite matrix $A,$ there exist n positive numbers called the symplectic eigenvalues of $A,$ and a basis of $\mathbb {R}^{2n}$ called the symplectic eigenbasis of A corresponding to these numbers. In this paper, we discuss differentiability and analyticity of the symplectic eigenvalues and corresponding symplectic eigenbasis and compute their derivatives. We then derive an analogue of Lidskii’s theorem for symplectic eigenvalues as an application.

Let $N/K$ be a finite Galois extension of p-adic number fields, and let $\rho ^{\mathrm {nr}} \colon G_K \longrightarrow \mathrm {Gl}_r({{\mathbb Z}_{p}})$ be an r-dimensional unramified representation of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ , which is the restriction of an unramified representation $\rho ^{\mathrm {nr}}_{{{\mathbb Q}}_{p}} \colon G_{{\mathbb Q}_{p}} \longrightarrow \mathrm {Gl}_r({{\mathbb Z}_{p}})$ . In this paper, we consider the $\mathrm {Gal}(N/K)$ -equivariant local $\varepsilon $ -conjecture for the p-adic representation $T = \mathbb Z_p^r(1)(\rho ^{\mathrm {nr}})$ . For example, if A is an abelian variety of dimension r defined over ${{\mathbb Q}_{p}}$ with good ordinary reduction, then the Tate module $T = T_p\hat A$ associated to the formal group $\hat A$ of A is a p-adic representation of this form. We prove the conjecture for all tame extensions $N/K$ and a certain family of weakly and wildly ramified extensions $N/K$ . This generalizes previous work of Izychev and Venjakob in the tame case and of the authors in the weakly and wildly ramified case.

We establish homotopy ribbon concordance obstructions coming from the Blanchfield form and Levine–Tristram signatures. Then, as an application of twisted Alexander polynomials, we show that for every knot K with nontrivial Alexander polynomial, there exists an infinite family of knots that are all concordant to K and have the same Blanchfield form as K, such that no pair of knots in that family is homotopy ribbon concordant.
