Let D be a divisor on a projectivized bundle over an elliptic curve. Numerical conditions for the very ampleness of D are proved. In some cases a complete numerical characterization is found.

In this paper, we calculate the center and the universal covering algebra of the Steinberg unitary Lie algebra stun, where is a unital nonassociative algebra with involution and n ≥ 3.

This paper is part of a program to study the conjecture of E. C. Dade on counting characters in blocks for several finite groups of Lie type. The local structures of certain radical chains of Chevalley groups of type G2 are given and the ordinary conjecture is confirmed for the groups when the characteristic of the modular representation is distinct from the defining characteristic of the groups.

This article contains examples and applications of the notion of exact sequences of Hopf algebras.

We present explicit calculations of the Arveson spectrum, the strong Arveson spectrum, the Connes spectrum, and the strong Connes spectrum, for an infinite tensor product type action of a compact group. Using these calculations and earlier results (of the authors and C. Peligrad) relating the various spectra to the ideal structure of the crossed product algebra, we prove that the topology of G influences the ideal structure of the crossed product algebra, in the following sense: if G contains a nontrivial connected group as a direct summand, then the crossed product algebra may be prime, but it is never simple; while if G is discrete, the crossed product algebra is simple if and only if it is prime. These results extend to compact groups analogous results of Bratteli for abelian groups. In addition, we exhibit a class of examples illustrating that for compact groups, unlike the case for abelian groups, the Connes spectrum and strong Connes spectrum need not be stable.

This paper represents a general study of the (Yoneda) Ext-algebra A* of a finite dimensional K-algebra A. Our motivation lies in the problem of establishing conditions under which (i) the species of A* coincides with the dual species of A and (ii) the quasi-heredity of A (or A*) yields the quasi-heredity of A* (or A, respectively). These questions are closely related to the Kazhdan—Lusztig Theory as presented by [CPS2]. The main results include introducing the concept of a solid algebra and the relevant Theorem 4.5 as well as a rather complete description of the situation in the case of monomial algebras in Section 5.

An explicit description of a hyperbolic canonical coordinate system for an expansive automorphism of a compact connected abelian group is given. These dynamical systems are factors of subshifts of finite type. Some properties of the associated crossed product C*-algebra are discussed. In these examples, the C* -algebras of Ruelle are crossed product algebras.

Consider the problem of recovering a probability measure supported by a compact subset U of ℝm when the available measurements concern only some of its Ф-moments (Ф being an ℝk valued continuous function on U). When the true Ф-moment c lies on the boundary of the convex hull of Ф(U), generalizing the results of [10], we construct a small set Rα,δ(∊) such that any probability measure μ satisfying is almost concentrated on Rα,δ(∊). When Ф is a pointwise T-system (extension of T-systems), the study of the set Rα,δ(∊) leads to the evaluation of the Prokhorov radius of the set .

We use generating functions to express orthogonality relations in the form of q-beta. integrals. The integrand of such a q-beta. integral is then used as a weight function for a new set of orthogonal or biorthogonal functions. This method is applied to the continuous q-Hermite polynomials, the Al-Salam-Carlitz polynomials, and the polynomials of Szegö and leads naturally to the Al-Salam-Chihara polynomials then to the Askey-Wilson polynomials, the big q-Jacobi polynomials and the biorthogonal rational functions of Al-Salam and Verma, and some recent biorthogonal functions of Al-Salam and Ismail.

Let A be a torsion free abelian group. We say that a group K is a finite essential extension of A if K contains an essential subgroup of finite index which is isomorphic to A. Such K admits a representation as (A ℤ xkx)/ℤky where y = Nx + a for some k x k matrix N over Z and α ∈ Ak satisfying certain conditions of relative primeness and ℤk = {(α1,..., αk) : αi, ∈ ℤ}. The concept of absolute width of an f.e.e. K of A is defined and it is shown to be strictly smaller than the rank of A. A kind of basis substitution with respect to Smith diagonal matrices is shown to hold for homogeneous completely decomposable groups. This result together with general properties of our representations are used to provide a self contained proof that acd groups with two critical types are direct sum of groups of rank one and two.

This paper shows that for the Moore spectrum MG associated with any abelian group G, and for any positive integer n, the order of the Postnikov k-invariant kn+1(MG) is equal to the exponent of the homotopy group πnMG. In the case of the sphere spectrum S, this implies that the exponents of the homotopy groups of S provide a universal estimate for the exponent of the kernel of the stable Hurewicz homomorphism hn: πnX → En(X) for the homology theory E*(—) corresponding to any connective ring spectrum E such that π0E is torsion-free and for any bounded below spectrum X. Moreover, an upper bound for the exponent of the cokernel of the generalized Hurewicz homomorphism hn: En(X) → Hn(X; π0E), induced by the 0-th Postnikov section of E, is obtained for any connective spectrum E. An application of these results enables us to approximate in a universal way both kernel and cokernel of the unstable Hurewicz homomorphism between the algebraic K-theory of any ring and the ordinary integral homology of its linear group.

Let X be a Banach space and . Let Π and Π0 be two subspaces of , the Banach space of bounded continuous functions from 𝕁 to X. We seek conditions under which Π + Π0 is closed in . This led to introduce a general space, which contains many classes of almost periodic type functions as subspaces. We prove some recent results on indefinite integral for the elements of these classes. We apply certain results on harmonic analysis to investigate solutions of differential equations. As an application we study specific spaces: the spaces of asymptotic and pseudo almost automorphic functions and their solutions of some ordinary quasi-linear and a non-linear parabolic partial differential equations.

We characterize open subsets U of ℝN in which the bounded solutions of certain elliptic equations can be approximated pointwise by uniformly bounded solutions that are continuous in Ū. This result is established in terms of certain capacities. For closed subsets X, this characterization allows us to approximate bounded solutions in X° uniformly on relatively closed subsets of X° by solutions continuous on certain subsets of the boundary of X.

The 3x+1 map T and the shift map S are defined by T(x) = (3x + 1)/2 for x odd, T(x) = x/2 for x even, while S(x) = (x − 1)/2 for x odd, S(x) = x/2 for x even. The 3x + 1 conjugacy map Φ on the 2-adic integers Z2 conjugates S to T, i.e., Φ o S o Φ-1 = T. The map Φ mod 2n induces a permutation Φn on Z/2nZ. We study the cycle structure of Φn. In particular we show that it has order 2n − 4 for n ≥ 6. We also count 1-cycles of Φn for n up to 1000; the results suggest that Φ has exactly two odd fixed points. The results generalize to the ax + b map, where ab is odd.

We estimate the density of resonances close to a critical curve, for strictly convex obstacles with analytic boundary. Contrary to the C∞-case, already treated with Zworski, the estimates are in terms of dynamical quantities. A new feature in the proof is a certain averaging procedure.

A p-subgroup version of the conjecture of Zassenhaus is proved for some finite solvable groups including solvable groups in which any Sylow p-subgroup is either abelian or generalized quaternion, solvable Frobenius groups, nilpotent-by-nilpotent groups and solvable groups whose orders are not divisible by the fourth power of any prime.

Let k ≥ 2 be an integer. Let Ek(N) be the number of natural numbers not exceeding N which are not the sum of a prime and a k-th power of a natural number. Assuming the Riemann Hypothesis for all Dirichlet L-functions it is shown that Ek(N) ≪ N1-1/25k.
