A flow relation for the minimum strain-rates for isotropic ice is presented. This flow relation has been compiled from laboratory tests in shear and compression, and covers the temperature and stress ranges typical of natural ice masses. However, the ice in natural ice masses is mostly anistropic. Three cores drilled at Law Dome, Antarctica, are used as examples to illustrate some of the different anisotropies that develop in ice masses in relation to the stress configurations and accumulated strains.

For the shear- or compression-stress configurations, anistropic flow rates can be derived as enhancements of the minimum isotropic flow rates for the particular stress, temperature, and stress configuration. For compression, this enhancement asymptotically approaches 3. For shear, the enhancement may be as high as 8. For combinations of shear and compression, further tests are required.

The work presented deals with detailed mapping of permafrost in Devil Bay, Vega Island, northeastern Antarctic Peninsula. Mapping of landforms and permafrost features within a periglacial plain was performed using high resolution visible satellite images and aerial photography. Two maps of permafrost were produced: one based on analysis and interpretation of visible satellite imagery and another on low-altitude aerial photography, both yielding similar results. The principles of morphogenesis were applied to map production, distinguishing both the syncryogenic and epicryogenic formations and each constitutive cryofacies. The interpretation of remote-sensing data allowed areas of occurrence of particular cryogenic processes to be defined. Remote sensing was found to be useful for permafrost mapping at both medium and large scales, and applicable for future extension to other regions in Antarctica.

Pressure ridges impact the mass, energy and momentum budgets of the sea-ice cover and present an obstacle to transportation through ice-infested waters. Quantifying ridge characteristics is important for understanding total sea-ice mass and for improving the representation of sea-ice dynamics in high-resolution models. Multi-sensor measurements collected during annual Operation IceBridge (OIB) airborne surveys of the Arctic provide new opportunities to assess the sea ice at the end of winter. We present a new methodology to derive ridge sail height from high-resolution OIB Digital Mapping System (DMS) visible imagery. We assess the efficacy of the methodology by mapping the full sail height distribution along 12 pressure ridges in the western and central Arctic. Comparisons against coincident Airborne Topographic Mapper (ATM) elevation anomalies are used to demonstrate the methodology and evaluate DMS-derived sail heights. Sail heights and elevation anomalies were correlated at 0.81 or above. On average mean and maximum sail height agreed with ATM elevation to within 0.11 and 0.49 m, respectively. Of the ridges mapped, mean sail height ranged from 0.99 to 2.16 m, while maximum sail height ranged from 2.1 to 4.8 m. DMS also delivered higher sampling along ridge crests than coincident ATM data.

Retreat of the grounding lines of West Antarctic ice streams may lead to the collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet. Pine Island Glacier has been pinpointed as an ice stream in which rapid retreat is likely, especially as it is not buttressed by an ice shelf. Radio echo-sounding flights have produced a longitudinal thickness profile for the glacier. The ice presently rests on a bedrock sill which may play a crucial role in controlling the position of the grounding line. The profile can be fitted to a steadystate model but this alone is not adequate to determine steady- or non-steady-state behaviour. Landsat images show that the ice front undergoes periodic calving. Mass-balance calculations suggest that accumulation in the catchment may exceed ablation by a factor of 2. However, accumulation data are poor and there is no firm evidence of a build-up of ice within the Pine Island Glacier drainage basin.

A sea-ice thickness profile obtained in September 1996 from the Greenland Sea and the Eurasian Basin, extending as far as the North Pole, has shown an unusually open ice cover with low mean drafts, large amounts of open water and little deep pressure ridging. Comparisons with data obtained from the same region in October 1976 show that mean ice draft has declined by 43% and that the decline can largely be ascribed to a loss of the thickest ice.

A new bedrock map of the Dome C area is presented, based on all radar data collected during Italian Antarctic Expeditions in 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2001. The map clearly distinguishes the Dome C plateau, along with valleys and ridges. The plateau develops at three different altimetric levels, and its morphology is characterized by hills and closed depressions. There are no visible features which can be ascribed to glacial erosion or deposition. The major valley is 15 km wide and 500 m deep; its axis is parallel to that of other valleys and ridges in the plateau. The valley bottom is not flat, but contains a saddle at its centre. The morphology of the major valley may be considered a relict one which was not modified by the overlying ice cap. Two large ridges, characterized by hills, saddles and depressions, lie near the boundaries of the area. The map is used to recalculate ice thickness below the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) borehole. The new thickness is 3300 m, 50m greater than before, implying that the expected palaeoclimate record from the ice core could extend back >800 kyr.

In this paper, we present the results of a one-dimensional, thermodynamic sea-ice model applied to the Baltic Air-Sea-Ice Study (BASIS) field data. In general, the model results are in good agreement with the measurements, which were made during mild weather conditions with distinct areal and temporal variations in the snow and ice thickness. The total amount of refrozen ice calculated from the surface melting water gives a first-order estimate of snow-ice formation during the BASIS experiment, and this agreed well with the total observed variation in ice thickness. The model slightly overestimated ice growth at the bottom. This may be due to the variation in sea-ice thermal properties, affected by a slush layer between the snow and ice, or to the lack of ice-ocean interaction in the model.

This paper compares estimates of suspended-sediment yield and discharge from two glacier basins in Svalhard exhibiting contrasting glacial thermal regimes: Austre Brøggerbreen (~12 km2), which is almost entirely cold-based, and Finsterwalderbreen (~44 km2), dominated by warm basal ice. There are marked differences in the magnitude and temporal pattern of mean daily discharge and mean daily suspended-sediment concentration from the two glacier basins. Specific suspended-sediment yields from Finsterwalderbreen (710–2900 t km−2 a−1) were more than one order of magnitude greater than at Austre Brøggerbreen (81–110 t km−2 a−1). These differences are ascribed to the influence of thermal regime upon the meltwater drainage system and the predominant sources of suspended sediment. The potential significance of glacier thermal regime is further explored using studies from other glacier basins in Svalbard. Variations in thermal regime resulting from mass-balance adjustments since the termination of the Little Ice Age are also examined.

Careful mineral and structural analyses have revealed the characteristics of volcanic ash in the nine horizons of an 80.2 m ice core from Collins Ice Cap, King George Island, Antarctica.

Under the assumption of steady state, the Dansgaard-Johnsen flow model was employed to date the core. The volcanic eruptive sequence established for the South Shetland Islands region since AD 1650 shows seven volcanic eruptive cycles during the past 340 years covered by the ice core. It seems that during the period 1875-1925 there was frequent volcanic activity, with perhaps many eruptions at Deception Island. The years 1650-1800 appear to have been a quiet period, followed by a more turbulent century. The past century is basically a tranquil era except for two turbulent epochs at the beginning of the century and in the 1950s-70s.

Many of the volcanic eruptions in the ice-core sequence are found in the previously reported records for this region. The few that are not in the records should be further investigated. The absence of any 1967-70 eruption trace in the core suggests that this period may represent a minimum in volcanic activity.

Quarrying and abrasion are the two principal processes responsible for glacial erosion of bedrock. The morphologies of glacier hard beds depend on the relative effectiveness of these two processes, as abrasion tends to smooth bedrock surfaces and quarrying tends to roughen them. Here we analyze concentrations of bedrock discontinuities in the Tsanfleuron forefield, Switzerland, to help determine the geologic conditions that favor glacial quarrying over abrasion. Aerial discontinuity concentrations are measured from scaled drone-based photos where fractures and bedding planes in the bedrock are manually mapped. A Tukey honest significant difference test indicates that aerial concentration of bed-normal bedrock discontinuities is not significantly different between quarried and non-quarried areas of the forefield. Thus, an alternative explanation is needed to account for the spatial variability of quarried areas. To investigate the role that bed-parallel discontinuities might play in quarrying, we use a finite element model to simulate bed-normal fracture propagation within a stepped bed with different step heights. Results indicate that higher steps (larger spacing of bed-parallel discontinuities) propagate bed-normal fractures more readily than smaller steps. Thus, the spacing of bed-parallel discontinuities could exert strong control on quarrying by determining the rate that blocks can be loosened from the host rock.

Results of acoustic emission tests on cylindrical specimens under compression are reported. Deformation-rate-controlled tests with strain rates ranging from 1.1 × 10-6 s-1 to 2.6 × 10-3 s-1 at temperatures between T = -11.2°Cand T = -1.7°C were performed. The investigated snow was fine-grained, with a density varying between 220 and 380 kgm-3. The acoustic emission was measured with two distinct piezoelectric sensors: a wide-band sensor (frequency 100–1000 kHz) and a resonant sensor (frequency 35–100 kHz). The relationship between the applied strain rate and the measured maximum acoustic-emission rate as a function of temperature and density was found to obey a power law, which is valid for the ductile behaviour range. The quantitative and qualitative effects produced on the acoustic emissions during the transition from ductile to brittle behaviour, occurring at strain rates of approximately 1 × 10-3 s-1, are reported. Finally, the influence of the load history on the acoustic emissions of snow is discussed on the basis of a cyclic test, including deformation-controlled loading steps and relaxation steps, performed at different strain rates and different relaxation times.

To better understand how ice fabric evolves in polar ice sheets, we use X-ray diffraction to measure ice crystal orientations. X-ray measurement equipment which can measure the orientation of the c axis and a axis of each crystal in a thin section with high measurement accuracy was developed. In this study, we present a-axes orientation distribution of the deep part of the GRIP (Greenland summit) ice core. At some depths, we find an anisotropic distribution of a-axes orientation. Long-term uniaxial compression tests are also carried out on the GRIP ice core to investigate the ice fabric evolution process. The c-axis orientation distribution develops into a stronger single maximum as the strain increases up to about 20% strain. We find that the a axes of each grain also tend to cluster close to nearly a mutual direction. We discuss the development process of ice fabrics, taking into consideration the distribution of the a-axis orientations. It is suggested that these fabrics may be attributed to a local simple shear deformation in the deep part of an ice sheet.

We use daily surface velocities measured over several weeks in 2007 and 2008 on a slowly surging glacier in Yukon, Canada, to examine the ordinary melt-season dynamics in the context of the ongoing surge. Horizontal velocities within and just below the ~1.5 km-long zone of fastest flow, where the surge is occurring, are often correlated during intervals of low melt. This correlation breaks down during melt events, with the lower reaches of the fast-flow zone responding first. Velocity variability in this lower reach is most highly correlated with melt; velocities above and below appear to respond at least as strongly to the velocity variations of this reach as to local melt. GPS height records are suggestive of ice/bed separation occurring in the fast-flow zone but not below it, pointing to a hydrological cause for the short-term flow variability in the surging region. Independent velocity measurements over 6 years show a maximum July flow anomaly coincident with the location most responsive to melt. Results from a simple model of dashpots and frictional elements lend support to the hypothesis that this zone partly drives the dynamics of the ice above and below it. We speculate that the slow surge may enhance glacier sensitivity to melt-season processes, including short-term summer sliding events.

The climate in Iceland was drier and warmer during the Holocene thermal maximum than it is today and it has been suggested that ice caps disappeared entirely. Katla, a volcano covered by the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap in southern Iceland, has erupted rather steadily throughout the Holocene. Pre-and post-eruption sulphur concentrations in its products have been determined in previous studies, through melt inclusions trapped in phenocrysts (pre-eruption mean values of 2155±165 ppm) and fully degassed magmatic tephra (post-eruption mean values of 445±130 ppm). The phreatomagmatic tephra has much more variable S contents (550–1775 ppm) and spans the compositional gap between magmatic tephra and melt inclusions. These variable sulphur values are attributed to arresting of degassing as the magma is quenched upon contact with external water in the shallow levels of the volcano conduit. Sulphur in Katla tephra can thus be used to evaluate whether Mýrdalsjökull survived the warm spells of the Holocene. In this study, sulphur concentrations in tephra layers representing the last ∽8400 years of the volcano’s eruption history were measured, revealing concentrations in the phreatomagmatic range (600–1600 ppm). Hence, we conclude that over the last ∽8400 years, explosive activity at Katla has been dominated by phreatomagmatic eruptions, implying that the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap has been present throughout the Holocene.

Measurements of trace elements in snow and ice are frequently used to describe past atmospheric composition although there is no firm basis for assuming a direct connection. Trace-element concentrations have been measured on samples of aerosol and freshly fallen snow collected simultaneously from two sites in the Antarctic Peninsula during summer. Following improvements in contamination control, the reported concentrations and crustal enrichment factors of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in the aerosol are lower than any values previously reported from Antarctica. Even tighter controls will be required in the future.

For a crustal element (A1) and for the marine cations (Na, Ca and K) a consistent ratio (0.48±0.31) for the concentration in air (pg m−3)/concentration in snow (pg g−1) is obtained for simultaneously collected samples. This supports a simple model of aerosol scavenging proposed by Junge which considers aerosol removal over polar ice sheets to be dominated by in-cloud processes. Averaged data for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn from samples collected at different times appear to behave similarly. These findings suggest that there is no preferential scavenging by snowfall of either crustal or heavy metal components in contemporary aerosol. If proved more general in Antarctica this may help to simplify the interpretation of time series data from ice cores.

The ice-core logging procedure used to log the North Greenland Icecore Project (NorthGRIP) ice cores is described. the existence of two deep ice cores, NorthGRIP 1and 2, drilled 25 mapart, allows an independent evaluation of the procedure. the logged depths of the NorthGRIP 1 and 2 cores deviate from the length of the unwound drill cable corrected for elongation of the cable when hanging in the hole, by 1.5‰ and 50.5‰ at depths of 1371 and 2931 m, respectively. Differences between logged depths of identified layers found in both cores are studied in the depth interval where they overlap. Layers are identified by electrical conductivity measurements and dielectric profiling. the difference between the logged depths of layers identified in both cores increases to 0.5 m close to the bottom of the NorthGRIP 1 core, which is <0.5 mm m–1 ice core. the comparison between the two cores shows that the NorthGRIP logging procedure is accurate and reproducible. Further, our results show that the temperature conditions and handling of the core during logging are important for obtaining a precise depth.

Conventional and reference-surface mass-balance data from Gulkana and Wolverine Glaciers, Alaska, USA, are used to address the questions of how rapidly these glaciers are adjusting (or ‘responding’) to climate, whether their responses are stable, and whether the glaciers are likely to survive in today’s climate. Instability means that a glacier will eventually vanish, or at least become greatly reduced in volume, if the climate stabilizes at its present state. A simple non-linear theory of response is presented for the analysis. The response of Gulkana Glacier is characterized by a timescale of several decades, but its stability and therefore its survival in today’s climate are uncertain. Wolverine seems to be responding to climate more slowly, on the timescale of one to several centuries. Its stability is also uncertain, but a slower response time would make it more susceptible to climate changes.

Isolated areas of high basal drag, or ‘sticky spots’, are important and poorly understood features in the force balance and dynamics of West Antarctic ice streams. Characterizing sticky spots formed by thin or drying subglacial till using ice-penetrating radar is theoretically possible, as high radar bed-returned power (BRP) is commonly related to an abundance of free water at the ice/bed interface, provided losses from englacial attenuation can be estimated. In this study we use airborne radar data collected over Evans Ice Stream to extract BRP profiles and test the sensitivity of BRP to the adopted englacial attenuation correction. We analyse 11 ~ 2 0 km profiles in four fast-flow areas where sticky spots have been inferred to exist on the basis of model and surface data inversions. In the majority of profiles we note that the increase in basal drag is accompanied by a decrease in BRP and suggest that this is evidence both for the presence of a sticky spot in those locations and that local variations in subglacial hydrology are responsible for their existence. A comparison is made between empirical and numerical modelling approaches for deriving englacial attenuation, and our findings generally support previous studies that advocate a modelling approach.

Sea-ice fluctuations in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea during the winters of 1992−99 were investigated by using the Special Sensor Microwave/ Imager dataset and a new ice-property retrieval algorithm This algorithm can distinguish between ice types such as fast ice floes, young ice and new ice, in an area covered by concentrations of >80% ice, and also has improved display resolution because it uses one of the 85 GHz channels. The ice thicknesses derived from the ice-thickness parameter of the new algorithm were compared with ship-based ice-thickness measurements, and were assumed to be 1−10, 11−34, 35−85 and 86−120 cm for new ice, young ice, floes (first-year ice) and fast ice, respectively. The results showed that ice volume can be small even if the ice area is large, due to thinness of the ice (e.g. in 1999 in the Sea of Okhotsk). A significant out-of-phase response, i.e. ice volume is larger in the Sea of Okhotsk when ice volume is smaller in the Bering Sea, was observed. The period of this see-saw showed two different time-scales, which were short (1 week) and long (2−4 weeks).

We examine the relative effect of warming events (storms) and snow cover on thermodynamic growth of Arctic sea ice in winter. We use a 1-D snow and ice thermodynamic model to perform sensitivity experiments. Observations from the winter period of the Norwegian young sea ICE (N-ICE2015) campaign north of Svalbard are used to initiate and force the model. The N-ICE2015 winter was characterized by frequent storm events that brought pulses of heat and moisture, and a thick snow cover atop the sea ice (0.3–0.5 m). By the end of the winter, sea-ice bottom growth was negligible. We show that the thermodynamic effect of storms to the winter sea-ice growth is controlled by the amount of snow on sea ice. For 1.3 m initial ice thickness, the decrease in ice growth caused by the warming events ranged from −1.4% (for 0.5 m of snow) to −7.5% (for snow-free conditions). The decrease in sea-ice growth caused by the thick snow (0.5 m) was more important, ranging from −17% (with storms) to −23% (without storms). The results showcase the critical role of snow on winter Arctic sea-ice growth.
