The Japanese second deep ice coring project was carried out at Dome Fuji, Antarctica. Following the drilling of the pilot hole in 2001, deep ice core drilling led by the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) was conducted over four austral summer seasons, beginning with the 2003/04 season and reached a depth of 3035.22 m near the bedrock in January 2007. The new drill was designed and developed with the goals of (1) solving the problems encountered during the first JARE deep coring drill and (2) achieving more efficient drilling. In particular, the maximum core length that can be drilled at one time was increased from 2.30 m to 3.84 m and the chip storage efficiency was enhanced by a special pipe with many small holes. This paper gives an outline of the improved drilling system, the progress of drilling and various drilling data.

A new, modified version of the cable-suspended Ice and Bedrock Electromechanical Drill (IBED) was designed for drilling in firn, ice, debris-rich ice and rock. The upper part of the drill is almost the same for all drill variants and comprises four sections: cable termination, a slip-ring section, an antitorque system and an electronic pressure chamber. The lower part of the IBED comprises an auger core barrel, reamers, a core barrel for ice/debris-ice drilling and a conventional geological single-tube core barrel or custom-made double-tube core barrel. First, the short and full-scale field versions of the IBED were tested at an outdoor testing stand and a testing facility with a 12.5 m-deep ice well. Then, in the 2018–2019 summer season, the IBED was tested in the field at a site ~12 km south of Zhongshan Station, East Antarctica, and a ~6 cm bedrock core was recovered from a 198 m-deep borehole. A total of 18 d was required to penetrate the ice sheet. The retrieved core samples of blue ice, basal ice and bedrock provided valuable information regarding the Earth's paleo-environment.

Perturbation of divide position is considered by a linearization about the Vialov–Nye solution and also about related solutions with O(1) relief. Relaxation times of one-sixteenth the fundamental thickness/accumulation-rate time-scale are found for the Vialov–Nye configuration, while substantial basal topography can halve the rate of relaxation. Steady divide position is most sensitive to anti-symmetric accumulation-rate distributions near the divide, but transient divide motion is most strongly excited by anti-symmetric accumulation rate variations halfway between the margin and the divide. Relaxation times for the Antarctic Peninsula divide position are estimated to be around 200 years, while the larger Greenland ice sheet has a divide-position relaxation time of around 600 years.

Modelling accumulation rate as a white-noise process permits analysis of divide perturbation as a (stochastic) Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process, where the standard deviation of the response is proportional to the standard deviation of the forcing. If observed accumulation-rate variability in the Antarctic Peninsula were anti-symmetric about the divide, it would be sufficient to force the divide position to fluctuate with standard deviation 10–20 times the depth of the ice sheet. There appears to be sufficient noise to cause Raymond bumps to be spread significantly. More data on the statistical variation of accumulation with position are needed. Random forcing will increase the complexity of any fold structures created in the divide region and in particular the number of such structures intersecting any borehole.

Results of analyses of snow annual accumulation variability, density and crystal growth measurements in firn and ice cores recovered from the upper layers of the West Antarctic ice sheet during the US component of the International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (ITASE) are presented. Annual-layer structure was analyzed on the basis of the visible stratigraphy and electrical conductivity measurement record in each core. Annual accumulation varied appreciably between core sites and within cores at individual sites where undulating surface topography appears to be exerting a significant impact on the magnitude of snow deposition. All density profiles except one exhibited densification that was normal with respect to snow annual accumulation and 10 m firn temperatures. Snow annual accumulation was determined stratigraphically, and 10m firn temperatures were either measured in the holes drilled for cores or inferred using elevation changes relative to Byrd Station, the 10m temperature at Byrd Station and an assumed lapse rate. Measurements at the one exceptional location indicated that the firn had undergone extremely rapid densification to ice, with the transition to ice occurring at 35–36m depth. Furthermore, thin-section measurements of grain-size show that the growth of crystals accelerated below the firn–ice transition. The behavior at this one site is attributed to localized deformation in the upper layers of firn and ice. Enhanced crystal growth was also observed at another site. At all other locations where grain-sizes were measured, the rates of crystal growth were in accord with age–temperature relationships observed by other researchers in Antarctica and Greenland. Profiles illustrating pore–crystal structure changes with increasing depth of burial are also presented.

Ion-chemistry and sulphate-isotope values for snow samples from the Prince of Wales Icefield, Ellesmere Island, Canada, show distinct seasonal trends and spatial patterns. Sixteen surface snow samples from two transects, and 30 samples from five depth profiles, representing fall 2003 to spring 2004 accumulation, have been analyzed. Surface snow samples show decreasing SO42– and Na+ concentrations along with decreasing δ34S values with distance inland and increased elevation. These trends follow an expected pattern of decreasing sea-salt aerosol impact with greater vertical and horizontal distance from sea-water sources. Depth-profile total sulphate and non-sea-salt sulphate increase in concentration with height in the snowpack, and these results, combined with δ34S values that are more positive in fall snow, are consistent with increased amounts of anthropogenic sulphate in surface spring snow. Sulphate apportionment was performed on surface snow assuming an isotopically light sulphate source (anthropogenic plus volcanic) mixed with isotopically heavier sulphate from dimethylsulphide (DMS) oxidation and sea water. Isotopically light sulphate in surface snow was apparent at all elevations at a reasonably uniform concentration. DMS sulphate, however, decreased exponentially with altitude, reflecting an ocean level source with oxidation occurring during transport and deposition. The significance to multi-year deposition studies is that sulphate from DMS oxidation may be related to sea-ice conditions in the region.

Ice-thickness and surface-elevation data gathered from radio echo flights over the Antarctic Peninsula are presented as profiles for five major outlet glaciers in northern Palmer Land and as contour maps for an area of 8 000 km2 to the east of George VI Sound. Glacier profiles appear to be closely related to ice discharge especially to convergent and divergent flow. Comparison of subglacial topography with geological evidence of faulting suggests that the area around George VI Sound is a region where structure is an important influence on the pattern of glacial erosion.

A sea-ice dynamics experiment was performed in the Baltic Sea in March 1997. A new type of drifter was constructed based on the global positioning system and mobile-phone data transmission. The drifters worked well and the accuracy was reasonable (std dev. 40 m). Five drifters were used to map ice kinematics in a 20 km size array in the coastal drift-ice zone. The study included periods of onshore motion with ridge formation, and alongshore motion with narrow shear lines. The motion of ice largely occurred in short pulses between which the field stood nearly still. The level of ice speed was much less than that of free drift, while the deformation field was more uniaxial due to the presence of the solid boundary. Drift-ice strength was estimated as 4 × 104 N m−2. Large deformation rates of up to 2% h−1 were observed.

Sea-ice observations have been conducted on board icebreaker shirase as a part of the Scientific programs of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. We Summarize these to investigate Spatial and interannual variability of ice thickness and Snow depth of the Summer landfast ice in Lützow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica. Electromagnetic–inductive observations, which have been conducted Since 2000, provide total thickness distributions with high Spatial resolution. A clear discontinuity, which Separates thin first-year ice from thick multi-year ice, was observed in the total thickness distributions in two voyages. Comparison with Satellite images revealed that Such phenomena reflected the past breakup of the landfast ice. Within 20–30km from the Shore, total thickness as well as Snow depth decrease toward the Shore. This is due to the Snowdrift by the Strong northeasterly wind. Video observations of Sea-ice thickness and Snow depth were conducted on 11 voyages Since December 1987. Probability density functions derived from total thickness distributions in each year are categorized into three types: a thin-ice, thick-ice and intermediate type. Such interannual variability primarily depends on the extent and duration of the Successive break-up events.

The authors present the results of snow hemispherical–directional reflectance measurements on natural snow in the 0.9–1.45 μm spectral range. The measurements were made in a cold laboratory on snow collected in the field. Some of the samples have been subjected to controlled metamorphism in the laboratory before measurements were made. In the first part, the adding–doubling model, experimental assumptions and methodology are described. In the second part, experimental results are discussed and compared with theoretical values for different typical snow types and for different stages of snow evolution when subjected to temperature-gradient and wetness metamorphisms.

A preliminary version of a three-dimensional ice-sheet model for later use in climate models, but excluding ice shelves and basal sliding, is presented and applied to the Antarctic ice sheet. In the model, the three-dimensional fields of velocity and temperature are calculated in the coupled mode, and the temperature equation is integrated for 150 000 years; the shape of the Antarctic ice sheet remains fixed. The results from the model are consistent with a stationary state in the central parts of the Antarctic ice sheet, but not in marginal areas, where the flow in the model is too small. Including a parameterized form of basal sliding that is dependent on the water pressure is likely to improve the situation.

Vestfonna ice cap, northeastern Svalbard, is one of the largest ice bodies in the European Arctic, but little is known about the evolution of its mass balance. This study presents a reconstruction of the climatic mass balance of the ice cap for the period 1979/80-2010/11. The reconstruction is based on calculations using a mass-balance model that combines a surface-elevation-dependent accumulation scheme with a spatially distributed temperature-index ablation model that includes net shortwave radiation. Refreezing is included, based on the basic Pmax approach. The model accounts for cloud-cover effects and surface albedo variations that are calculated by a statistical albedo model. ERA-Interim derived air temperature, precipitation and total cloud-cover data are used as input. Results reveal a mean climatic mass-balance rate of +0.09 ± 0.15 m w.e. a–1 for the study period. Annual balances show a slight, insignificant trend towards less positive values over the study period. Refreezing is estimated to contribute about one-third to annual accumulation, and a significant positive trend in refreezing is present over the study period. The modelling results reveal a significant steepening of the climatic mass-balance gradient and indicate a lengthening of the characteristic 3 month ablation period in recent years.

During March 2003, Autosub, an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) operated by the UK National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, was deployed under Sea ice north of Thurston Island, Amundsen Sea, Antarctica (at ∽71˚ S, 100˚ W). The vehicle was fitted with an upward-looking 300 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) to provide current velocity above the AUV. The ADCP also recorded ranges to the ocean–ice interface. Such data can be used to derive Sea-ice draft by using a number of novel processing Steps Such as correcting for the coordinate Systems of the ADCP unit and the vehicle as well as corrections for changes in Sound Speed. This paper outlines the processing Stages required to obtain a probability density function (PDF) of Sea-ice draft and presents PDFs for the region north of Thurston Island. The distribution of ice draft was found to be unimodal, with modes between 2.2 and 2.4 m. Given the uncertainty in Sound Speed, the limit of accuracy was estimated as ∽6 cm.

Snow hardness is the resistance to penetration. It can be measured by the Swiss rammsonde or estimated by the hand hardness test. According to the International Classification of Seasonal Snow on the Ground (ICSSG), snow hardness is divided into five levels (without ice). However, the hand test is subjective and provides only an index value of snow hardness. The main objective of this study was to determine the hardness using an alternative method which can be applied in the same way as the hand test and which can deliver accurate data. In this study the conventional hand hardness test was used; additionally, a digital force gauge (push-pull gauge) was applied where the hardness was measured horizontally (for comparison with the hand hardness test). The push-pull gauge could be provided with five different attachments. The size and design of each attachment corresponded to the equivalent application of the hand hardness test (fist, four fingers, one finger, pencil, knife). This paper indicates how snow hardness measured by hand is related to snow hardness measured with the push-pull gauge. Moreover, the variability of the hardness, both vertical and horizontal, is demonstrated. The results show agreement with the ICSSG for hand hardness indices 3, 4 and 5; for hand hardness indices 1 and 2, the range indicated by the ICSSG is below the lower quartile of the measurements.

This work presents the results of physical and biological investigations at 27 biogeochemical stations of early winter sea ice in the Ross Sea during the 2017 PIPERS cruise. Only two similar cruises occurred in the past, in 1995 and 1998. The year 2017 was a specific year, in that ice growth in the Central Ross Sea was considerably delayed, compared to previous years. These conditions resulted in lower ice thicknesses and Chl-a burdens, as compared to those observed during the previous cruises. It also resulted in a different structure of the sympagic algal community, unusually dominated by Phaeocystis rather than diatoms. Compared to autumn-winter sea ice in the Weddell Sea (AWECS cruise), the 2017 Ross Sea pack ice displayed similar thickness distribution, but much lower snow cover and therefore nearly no flooding conditions. It is shown that contrasted dynamics of autumnal-winter sea-ice growth between the Weddell Sea and the Ross Sea impacted the development of the sympagic community. Mean/median ice Chl-a concentrations were 3–5 times lower at PIPERS, and the community status there appeared to be more mature (decaying?), based on Phaeopigments/Chl-a ratios. These contrasts are discussed in the light of temporal and spatial differences between the two cruises.

Using a direct simple-shear apparatus, snow samples (115 mm in diameter, 16–18 mm in height) taken from a so-called homogeneous layer (small rounded particles, density: 290 kg m−3) were tested in a cold laboratory. Experiments were performed for strain rates between 7 × 10−6 s−1 and 5 × 10−3 s−1 at test temperatures of −5°C, −10°C and −15°C. The effects of strain rate and temperature on failure stress, failure strain, stiffness (initial tangent modulus) and toughness were studied. The transition between the ductile and brittle (sudden fracture) state of failure was found to be at about 1 × 10−3 s−1 for the snow types tested, independent of temperature. Stiffness proved to be the most temperature-dependent property of alpine snow. It strongly increases with decreasing temperature. Failure strain and toughness decrease with decreasing temperature. Failure stress was found to increase slightly with decreasing temperature. The effect is not very distinct but close to statistically significant and might be partly hidden by the scatter in the stress data due to variations inherent in sampling and testing.

Mass-balance measurements were initiated in 2007/08 on Sørbreen, Jan Mayen, including operation of automatic weather stations in the ablation zone. Mean daily melt rate is 3.6 cmw.e. d−1 for the investigated snow-free period of 115 days in June-September 2008. During this period, the net radiation is the largest contributor to melt. However, the relative contribution is highest in June (81%) and less in September (21%). The net longwave radiation is negative, acting as a heat sink. The climate on Jan Mayen is polar maritime with generally high humidity and overcast conditions. This leads to a positive latent heat flux, which represents condensation to the glacier surface. Persistent temperature inversions on the island lead to non-linear lapse rates and an ablation profile where melt does not necessarily decrease with increased elevation. A comparison of air temperatures on the glacier and twice-daily radiosonde ascents from the meteorological station, ∼ 20 km away from the glacier, shows that air temperatures at corresponding elevations are highly correlated (R2 = 0.94–0.96). This indicates that radiosonde temperature profiles can be valuable for determining lapse rates for melt modeling of the glacier.

A global model is presented that simulates zonal averages of stable isotopes δ(18O), δ(D) and precipitation rates at sea level. The model is empirical and uses as input zonal averages of evaporation, meridional water-vapour flux, air temperature, sea temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, sea-ice cover, and supersaturation in clouds as a function of temperature. The global model provides input to high-latitude regional solutions that are found integrating up assumed vapour trajectories, which need not be at sea level. Model precipitation rates, δ(18O) and δ(D), compare well to measured values on an annual and seasonal basis. The stable-isotope-temperature relation poleward of about 35° latitude as well as the isotope-precipitation relation in the tropics is simulated by the zonal global model. The Queen Elizabeth Islands stable-isotope pattern is given as an example of a regional solution of the model. Zonal moisture contributions for high-elevation sites are found to be different between northern hemisphere (Crête, Greenland) and southern hemisphere (Vostok, East Antarctica) with the southern high-latitude cold oceans making a larger relative contribution.

This paper examines the positive and negative aspects of a range of interpretations of nearest-neighbours models. Measures-oriented and distribution-oriented verification methods are applied to categorial, probabilistic and descriptive interpretations of nearest neighbours used operationally in avalanche forecasting in Scotland and Switzerland. The dependence of skill and accuracy measures on base rate is illustrated. The purpose of the forecast and the definition of events are important variables in determining the quality of the forecast. A discussion of the application of different interpretations in operational avalanche forecasting is presented.

In this paper, the ratio of dust layer thickness to ice thickness, i.e. the dust ratio, is used as a proxy for dust event frequency in the Malan ice core from the northern Tibetan Plateau. We reconstructed a ∼900 year record that reveals that the 1770s–1880s was a prolonged period of high dust ratios, which indicates that dust events occurred frequently from the late 18th century through the 19th century. Statistical analysis of the variations in the dust ratios and δ18O (which is a good proxy for air temperature) in the Malan ice core shows that there is a strong negative correlation between them. This suggests that dust events occur more frequently in cold periods than in warm periods.

To evaluate water and anion movement in an agricultural field in different frost conditions, a paired-plot field experiment was conducted at an agricultural site in northern Japan where a significant decrease in the frost depth has occurred during the past 20 years. Snow cover was removed to enhance soil freezing in one plot (treated plot), whereas natural conditions were maintained in a control plot. The maximum frost depth was 0.43 m in the treated plot and 0.11 m in the control plot, which induced substantial differences in water movement throughout the winter. A substantial amount of water moved upward before the onset of snowmelt. However, nitrate did not move markedly before the snowmelt period in either plot. The amount of snowmelt infiltration in the control plot was larger than in the treated plot. Correspondingly, the peak of nitrate content in the control plot was deeper than that in the treated plot after the snowmelt period. Soil freezing, snow accumulation and snowmelt processes were simulated reasonably well using a one-dimensional numerical model: Simultaneous Heat and Water (SHAW). Nevertheless, the model performed poorly for simulating soil thawing and soil water movement, suggesting a need for improvement.
